Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel WDM-PON architecture to support efficient and bandwidth-scalable virtual private network (VPN) emulation over both inter-PON and intra-PON. The virtual ring link for the VPN communications among ONUs is realized by using additionally low-cost optical passive components and OFDMA technology. Moreover, the downstream traffic wavelength is reused for the upstream traffic signal by using re-modulation technology. We report on a successful transmission of 10.7 Gbps OOK upstream and 10.7 Gbps DPSK downstream, together with 1.25 Gbps 16-QAM OFDM VPN traffic, over 20 km no-zero dispersion shifted fiber (NZDSF).

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a novel optical physical-layer network coding (PNC) scheme over time-division multiplexing (TDM) passive optical network (PON). Full-duplex error-free communications between optical network units (ONUs) at 2.5 Gb/s are shown for all-optical virtual private network (VPN) applications. Compared to the conventional half-duplex communications set-up, our scheme can increase the capacity by 100% with power penalty smaller than 3 dB. Synchronization of two ONUs is not required for the proposed VPN scheme

Abstract:We propose a spectral efficient radio over wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) system by combining optical polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and wireless multiple input multiple output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing techniques. In our experiment, a training-based zero forcing (ZF) channel estimation algorithm is designed to compensate the polarization rotation and wireless multipath fading. A 797 Mb/s net data rate QPSK-OFDM signal with error free (<1 × 10(5)) performance and a 1.59 Gb/s net data rate 16QAM-OFDM signal with BER performance of 1.2 × 10(2) are achieved after transmission of 22.8 km single mode fiber followed by 3 m and 1 m air distances, respectively.

Abstract:This paper proposes WiMAX-VPON, a novel framework for establishing layer-2 virtual private networks (VPNs) over the integration of WiMAX and Ethernet passive optical networks, which has lately been considered as a promising candidate for next-generation fiber-wireless backhaul-access networks. With WiMAX-VPON, layer-2 VPNs support a bundle of service requirements to the respective registered wireless/wired users. These requirements are stipulated in the service level agreement and should be fulfilled by a suite of effective bandwidth management solutions. To achieve this, we propose a novel VPN-based admission control and bandwidth allocation scheme that provides per-stream quality-of-service protection and bandwidth guarantee for real-time flows. The bandwidth allocation is performed via a common medium access control protocol working in both the optical and wireless domains. An event-driven simulation model is implemented to study the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Abstract:We propose a novel offset Manchester coding in upstream to simultaneously realize Rayleigh noise suppression and differential detection in a carrier-distributed wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network. Error-free transmission of 2.5-Gb/s upstream signals over 50-km standard single mode fiber is experimentally demonstrated, with a 7-dB enhanced tolerance to Rayleigh noise.

Abstract:Inverted return-to-zero (IRZ)–Manchester coding is proposed for optical downstream signal using amplitude shift keying (ASK) modulation in an optical network unit (ONU)-source-free wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON), and ASK modulation is used for the optical upstream signal generation using remodulation over the optical downstream signal. With IRZ–Manchester coding, differential phase shift keying (DPSK) modulation can be overlaid on the downstream optical ASK signal for broadcasting services. Our experimental results show that the IRZ–Manchester coded optical ASK downstream signal has no modulation extinction ratio restrictions from the overlaid DPSK modulation, and that the remodulated optical upstream signal has very limited signal crosstalk from the downstream signals. In comparison with the conventional schemes using only Manchester coding or IRZ modulation, the proposed IRZ–Manchester coded modulation scheme shows better performance under different PON upstream and downstream traffic bit rate ratios.

Abstract:Recently, digital signal processing (DSP) methods have been extensively studied and various DSP-based schemes have been proposed for next-generation passive optical network (PON). In this paper, we combine the time-division-multiplexing (TDM) architecture with advanced DSP methods to achieve high spectrum-efficiency colorless transmission. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), as the original form of various DSP methods with frequency-domain equalization (FDE), is chosen for both upstream and downstream transmissions. In the TDM-PON based on OFDM (TDM-OFDM-PON) architecture, OFDM symbols are transmitted in different time slots instead of on-off-key (OOK) bits in conventional TDM-PON. This architecture can be extended for single-carrier with FDE easily. Due to the same TDMA scheme, it can achieve maximum compatibility with current TDM-PON. A DSP-based evolution scheme from conventional TDM-PON to TDM-OFDM-PON is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by upgrading the optical line terminal (OLT) to support both OOK and OFDM signals, which can maintain the current optical distribution network (ODN) and minimize the impact for the existing service and equipment.

Abstract:Wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is a promising architecture for next-generation access networks because of its large bandwidth, protocol transparency and scalability. In this paper, we propose a cost-effective, high-speed upstream WDM-PON scheme adopting polarization division multiplexed (PDM) on-off keying (OOK) modulation at the optical network unit (ONU) and digital coherent/self-coherent detection with a novel blind dual-modulus equalization algorithm at the optical line terminal (OLT). As such, the upstream capacity can be directly enhanced at low ONU expenditure, and receiver sensitivity as well as power budget can be also improved. Abstract:We propose a novel nonbinary low-density parity-check (NB-LDPC) coding scheme for new service overlaid wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON). In conventional binary coding scheme, each channel is encoded/decoded independently; while in our nonbinary coding scheme, old service channel and new service channel are encoded/decoded together. Compared with independent binary coding scheme, NB-LDPC coding scheme provides better bit-error-rate performance as shown by our simulation.

Abstract:We propose a long reach double-side band (DSB) time-division-multiplexing PON architecture based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDM-OFDM-PON). To avoid severe power fading induced by chromatic dispersion for DSB long reach transmission, we adopt higher-order modulation and small guard-band between carrier and signal band. 20-Gb/s upstream long-reach DSB TDM-OFDM-PON transmission is experimentally demonstrated over 100-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), enabled by 64-QAM OFDM modulation and 0.85-GHz carrier-to-signal guard-band.

Abstract:A survivable wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) with centralized protection scheme and colorless optical network units is proposed. The sideband channels generated via optical carrier suppression technique are used to carry both the downstream (DS) and the upstream (US) remodulated signals for two neighboring sub-PONs. By employing alternate path routing of sideband channels, the centralized protection scheme can provide reliable protection against any failure in feed fibers, remote node, and distribution fibers. The number of extra fibers is greatly reduced, and efficient utilization of wavelength resource is achieved. The feasibility of the proposed system is verified by 10-Gb/s DS and 1.25-Gb/s US signals over 25-km single-mode fiber transmission in both working and protection modes. Abstract:In a remodulation PON, the upstream signal quality can be improved when the downstream signal is coded. But low code efficiency may result in network congestion in downlink. Based on the downlink traffic, a self-adapting PON can select the proper downstream modulation codes to achieve the optimal network performance. With adaptive code selection, network congestion can be avoided and the remodulated upstream signal suffers minimal performance degradation. Some codes of various coding efficiency are required to be selected in this self-adapting PON. These codes should induce as little crosstalk to the upstream signal as possible. Several candidate codes with coding efficiencies from 50% to 80%, such as Manchester code, 3b5b code, 4b5b code, 4b6b code and 6b8b code are tested through simulation and experiment in this paper, and their performances are compared. The results show that the optimum code for downstream modulation depends on the downlink traffic and the upstream bit rate. The results will help the self-adapting remodulation WDM-PON to select the proper downstream modulation codes in different traffic situations.

Abstract:In recent years, the innovation in devices and schemes of physical layer plays an important role in promoting the development of WDM-PON (Wavelength Division MultiplexingPassive Optical Network). Among the key technologies adopted in the WDM-PON system, advanced modulation formats at downstream and remodulations at upstream attract the most attention. DPSK (Differential Phase Shift Keying Modulation), FSK(Frequency-Shift Keying), IRZ(Inverted Return-to-Zero) and Manchester are four of the most common formats and each of them was studied before, but, however, nobody compared and analyzed them together. So, we will do the job by numeralsimulation in this paper. During our simulation, the 40-Gbit/s FSK is generated through the demodulation of two DPSK signals and 40-Gbit/s Manchester signal bases of employing a delay interferometer (DI) and an optical delay line as format conversion device to convert RZ-DPSK(Return to Zero-Differential Phase Shift Keying Modulation) coding to Manchester coding, both of the two format generation schemes are novel. Meanwhile, this paper emphasizes the input optical power and dispersion tolerance, which both related to the sensitivity of the system. Analyze the sensitivity with DPSK, FSK, IRZ and Manchester, and then compare the four advanced modulation formats.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel design of a burst-mode transceiver with local real-time intelligence for point-to-multipoint upstream transmission at 155.52 Mb/s. Using embedded intelligence for controlling laser drive parameters, and a trailer canceling technique at a receiver, excellent combined performance of high sensitivity (-37 dBm at BER 10-9), large optical power budget (36 dB), wide dynamic range (33 dB), and short run-in time (26 ns) was successfully demonstrated. It can connect up to 32 subscribers through a passive optical tree network using a burst TDMA scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, a backward compatible bidirectional 160/40 Gbps time and wavelength division multiplexing-passive optical network with hybrid wavelength division multiplexing optical code division multiple access PON (WDM–OCDMA PON) has been proposed. Six OCDMA codes have been used to enhance the security and users' ability to access shared bandwidth of an optical network. In this "pay-as-you-grow" supported system, the fiber impairment effects have been effectively reduced. The performance of the proposed system has been analyzed for variable input power (4–19 dBm) and transmission distance (10–70 km) supporting 120 active users under the influence of fiber nonlinearities, attenuation, dispersion and noise. Based on the numerical calculations, the proposed system using modified quadratic congruence (MQC) code is shown to provide better performance compared to multi diagonal, hadamard, zero cross-correlation (ZCC), shift ZCC and flexible cross-correlation codes. To validate the numerical analysis, the simulation of the proposed system at 160/40 Gbps data rate for 70 km downstream and greater than 70 km upstream fiber link transmission at 10<sup>−9</sup> BER limit for 68 active users have been successfully demonstrated. Also, it has been shown that MQC code provides optimum results at 10 dBm input power over 55 km distance and supports more than 120 active users with high gain of − 1.97 dB and low noise figure of 2 dB. Further, the comparative performance of the proposed system with the previous latest works in literature reveals a superior performance of the system.
