Abstract:Chip-scale integrated optical signal processors promise to support a multitude of signal processing functions with bandwidths beyond the limit of microelectronics. Previous research has made great contributions in terms of demonstrating processing functions and device building blocks. Currently, there is a significant interest in providing functional reconfigurability, to match a key advantage of programmable microelectronic processors. To advance this concept, in this work, we experimentally demonstrate a photonic integrated circuit as an optical signal processor with an unprecedented combination of two key features: reconfigurability and terahertz bandwidth. These features enable a variety of processing functions on picosecond optical pulses using a single device. In the experiment, we successfully verified clock rate multiplication, arbitrary waveform generation, discretely and continuously tunable delays, multi-path combining and bit-pattern recognition for 1.2-ps-duration optical pulses at 1550 nm. These results and selected head-to-head comparisons with commercially available devices show our device to be a flexible integrated platform for ultrahigh-bandwidth optical signal processing and point toward a wide range of applications for telecommunications and beyond.

Abstract:Temporal imaging is one of the most promising all-optical signal processing techniques that enable single-shot ultrafast signal characterization in both spectral and temporal domains. However, conventional temporal imaging systems have inherent constraints such as limited record length, narrow spectral observation range and complex system configuration, which prevent their potential to be fully unleashed. In this article, we review the recent efforts in developing advanced temporal imaging systems with much enhanced performance. Their powerful applications are demonstrated by real-time single-shot characterization of Kerr soliton generation in microresonator, noise-like pulses in mode-locked fiber lasers, broadband frequency combs and the dynamic waveform in ultrafast optical tomography. In addition, potential future developments of this technique in several important directions are discussed.

Ultrafast all-optical second harmonic wavefront shaping

Abstract:Optical communication can be revolutionized by encoding data into the orbital angular momentum of light beams. However, state-of-the-art approaches for dynamic control of complex optical wavefronts are mainly based on liquid crystal spatial light modulators or miniaturized mirrors, which suffer from intrinsically slow response times. Here, we experimentally realize a hybrid meta-optical system that enables complex control of the wavefront of light with pulse-duration limited dynamics. Specifically, by combining ultrafast polarization switching in a WSe2 monolayer with a dielectric metasurface, we demonstrate second harmonic beam deflection and structuring of orbital angular momentum on the femtosecond timescale. Our results pave the way to robust encoding of information for free space optical links, while reaching response times compatible with real-world telecom applications.

Abstract:In order to achieve efficient dynamic spectrum access (DSA) in Cognitive Ultra-Wideband (C-UWB) systems, an orthogonal wavelets based dynamic pulse shaping method is proposed to obtain pulses which can adapt to any given spectral requirements. Using Meyer wavelet set as the orthogonal basis, pulses with high power efficiency can be achieved. The compact support property of Meyer wavelets enables us to efficiently reduce the computational complexity in dynamic pulse shaping calculation. Moreover, we demonstrate that the proposed method is easy to implement and can achieve a good balance between power efficiency and system complexity.

Abstract:To meet the constant demands of high-capacity telecommunications infrastructure, data rates beyond 1 terabit per second per wavelength channel and optical multiplexing are widely applied. However, these features pose challenges for existing data acquisition and optical performance monitoring techniques because of bandwidth limitation and signal synchronization. We designed an approach that would address these limitations by optically converting the frequency limit to an unlimited time axis and combining this with a chirped coherent detection to innovatively obtain the full-field spectrum. With this approach, we demonstrated a real-time Fourier-domain optical vector oscilloscope, with a 3.4-terahertz bandwidth and a 280-femtosecond temporal resolution over a 520-picosecond record length. In addition to on-off keying and binary phase-shift keying signals (128 gigabits per second), quadrature phase-shift keying wavelength division–multiplexed signals (4 × 160 gigabits per second) are simultaneously observed. Moreover, we successfully demonstrate some high-precision measurements, which indicate them as a promising scientific and industrial tool in high-speed optical communication and ultrafast optical measurement.

Abstract:A photonics-enabled wavelet-like transform system, characterized by multi-resolution time-frequency analysis, is proposed based on a typical stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) pump-probe setup using an optical nonlinear frequency-sweep signal. In the pump path, a continuous-wave optical signal is injected into an SBS medium to generate an SBS gain. In the probe path, a periodic nonlinear frequency-sweep optical signal with a time-varying chirp rate is generated, which is then modulated at a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) by the electrical signal under test (SUT). The optical signal from the MZM is selectively amplified by the SBS gain and converted back to the electrical domain using a low-speed photodetector, implementing the periodic SBS-based frequency-to-time mapping (FTTM). The frequency-domain information corresponding to different periods is mapped to the time domain via the FTTM in the form of low-speed electrical pulses, which is then spliced to analyze the time-frequency relationship of the SUT in real-time. The time-varying chirp rate in each sweep period makes the signals with different frequencies have different frequency resolutions in the FTTM process, which is very similar to the characteristics of the wavelet transform, so we call it wavelet-like transform. An experiment is carried out. Multi-resolution time-frequency analysis of a variety of RF signals is carried out in a 4-GHz bandwidth limited only by the equipment.

Abstract:Direct time-domain sampling oscilloscopic capture of ultra-high bandwidth (32-102 GHz) modulated optical waveforms at 1550 nm is demonstrated at optical power levels below -100 dBm. To detect fast optical waveforms directly at power levels far below what traditional optical oscilloscope methods can measure, we use a time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) sampling acquisition method, recently developed integrated electro-optic devices with >100 GHz electro-optic bandwidth, and single photon detectors with < 5 ps jitter. We show the reconstruction of the time domain signals by collecting histograms of time-binned single photons captured using TCSPC and characterize the spectral components in the frequency domain. The ability to acquire ultra-weak eye diagrams and identify high-frequency spectral components from a relatively small ensemble of single-photon measurements may lead to significant advances in optical waveform capture technology.

Abstract:The ability to control the instantaneous state of light, from high-energy pulses down to the single-photon level, is an indispensable requirement in photonics. This has, for example, facilitated spatiotemporal probing and coherent control of ultrafast light-matter interactions, and enabled capabilities such as generation of exotic states of light with complexity, or at wavelengths, that are not easily accessible. Here, by leveraging the multifunctional control of light at the nanoscale offered by metasurfaces embedded in a Fourier transform setup, we present a versatile approach to synthesize ultrafast optical transients with arbitrary control over its complete spatiotemporal evolution. Our approach, supporting an ultrawide bandwidth with simultaneously high spectral and spatial resolution, enables ready synthesis of complex states of structured space-time wave packets. We expect our results to offer unique capabilities in coherent ultrafast light-matter interactions and facilitate applications in microscopy, communications, and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:A photonic approach to generating chirped microwave signal with high time-bandwidth product (TBWP) is proposed. The scheme utilizes the linear frequency-to-time mapping of a spectrally-shaped optical pulse propagating through a dispersive element. A mode-locked laser for generating short optical pulses and a programmable optical filter (POF) to shape the spectrum of the pulses are employed. Experiment results show that the chirped signal with a TBWP and compression ratio both in excess of 60 is achieved. We also estimate theoretically the maximum TBWP that can be achieved over 300 under the constraint of the finite frequency resolution of the applied POF. The effect of higher order dispersion on the generated RF pulses and the TBWP is also investigated.

Abstract:An ultra-fast and high-resolution optical vector analysis scheme has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the scheme, a broadband optical frequency-sweeping signal is generated by injecting a linearly frequency-modulated signal into one radio-frequency (RF) port of a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulator, which is used to achieve fast scanning of the frequency response characteristic of the device under test (DUT). A single-tone microwave signal is injected into the other RF port of the modulator to realize down-conversion of the frequency-sweeping signal. The down-converted signal is then digitized by an analog-to-digital converter, and is processed through Hilbert transform to extract the amplitude- and phase-frequency response of the DUT. In the proof-of-concept experiment, the amplitude- and phase-frequency response of the Brillouin gain in a section of non-zero dispersion shifted fiber with a length of 3 km is accurately measured, where the measurement time is only 20 μs, and the frequency resolution reaches 20 kHz.

Abstract:The development of a real-time optical waveform measurement technique with quantum-limited sensitivity, unlimited record lengths and an instantaneous bandwidth scalable to terahertz frequencies would be beneficial in the investigation of many ultrafast optical phenomena. Currently, full-field (amplitude and phase) optical measurements with a bandwidth greater than 100 GHz require repetitive signals to facilitate equivalent-time sampling methods or are single-shot in nature with limited time records. Here, we demonstrate a bandwidth- and time-record scalable measurement that performs parallel coherent detection on spectral slices of arbitrary optical waveforms in the 1.55 µm telecommunications band. External balanced photodetection and high-speed digitizers record the in-phase and quadrature-phase components of each demodulated spectral slice, and digital signal processing reconstructs the signal waveform. The approach is passive, extendable to other regions of the optical spectrum, and can be implemented as a single silicon photonic integrated circuit.

Abstract:An ultrafast and wideband optical vector analyzer is proposed and demonstrated based on optical dual linear-frequency modulation. Optical dual linear-frequency-modulation waveforms (LFMWs) are generated through driving an electro-optic Mach-Zehnder modulator biased at its minimum transmission point via an electrical LFMW. Benefiting from the high frequency tuning speed of the electrical LFMW, the optical dual LFMWs can probe optical devices in a short time. Frequency-shifted dechirp processing is utilized to separate the dechirped photocurrents of the optical dual LFMWs, which leads to a doubled measurement bandwidth. In the experiment, an optical bandpass filter is measured with a measurement bandwidth of 36 GHz and a single-shot measurement time of $20~\mu \text{s}$ . The frequency measurement resolution is demonstrated to be 10 MHz by measuring the reflection notch of an ultra-narrowband phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating.

Abstract: It is critical to characterize the carrier and instantaneous frequency distribution variation in ultrafast processes, all of which are determined by the optical phase. Nevertheless, there is no method that can single-shot record the intro-pulse phase evolution of pico/femtosecond signals, to date. By analogying holographic principle in space to the time domain and using the time-stretch method, we propose the dispersive temporal holography to single-shot recover the phase and amplitude of ultrafast signals. It is a general and comprehensive technology and can be applied to analyze ultrafast signals with highly complex dynamics. The method provides a new powerful tool for exploring ultrafast science, which may benefit many fields, including laser dynamics, ultrafast diagnostics, nonlinear optics, and so on.

Abstract:Optical time stretch has been employed for ultrafast optical imaging based on space-to-wavelength-to-time mapping. However, temporal overlap between two adjacent time-stretched pulses is a disadvantageous factor that limits the spatial resolution, or the frame rate has to be reduced by reducing the pulse repetition rate to avoid the temporal overlap. To increase the spatial resolution without reducing the frame rate, we propose a novel technique based on polarization-division multiplexing, using a polarization modulator to generate two polarization interleaved pulse trains. Since two adjacent optical pulses are orthogonally polarized, the spacing between two adjacent pulses for one polarization direction is doubled, and the spatial resolution is doubled by using a dispersive element with two times the dispersion. The proposed approach is experimentally evaluated. An imaging system with an increased spatial resolution is demonstrated.

Abstract:Data-processing techniques in spectroscopy are fundamental and powerful analytical tools for lots of practical applications. In the age of big data, high-speed data-processing in spectroscopy is in urgent need, especially for the real-time analysis/feedback of data stream of spectroscopy or the capture of non-repetitive/rare phenomena in fast dynamic process. So far, intensive researches focus on high-speed processing of light signal in time/spatial domain but few people find a way to do it in spectral domain. Here, we report an optical computing technology for high-speed optical spectrum processing with features of real time, multiple functions, all-fiber configuration and immunity to electromagnetic interference. The software-controlled system could perform as, but not limited to, the first-order (or arbitrary fractional-order) differentiator/integrator/Hilbert transformer and tunable band-pass filter, respectively, to handle spectral data rapidly. High-speed processing of optical spectrum at a rate of 10,000,000 times per second is demonstrated.

Abstract:A new ultrafast all-optical solid-state framing camera (UASFC) capable of single-shot ultrafast imaging is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It is composed of an ultrafast semiconductor chip (USC), an optical time-series system (TSS), and a spatial mapping device (SMD) with an USC to transform signal beam information to the probe beam, a TSS to convert the time axis to wavelength-polarization, and a SMD to map wavelength-polarization image to different spatial positions. In our recent proof-of-principle experiment, better performance than ever of this technique is confirmed by giving six frames with ~3 ps temporal resolution and ~30 lp/mm spatial resolution.

Abstract:We demonstrate high-resolution amplified pulse shaping using an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) at a center-wavelength of 795nm. The output pulses have energy of 200mJ/pulse and a transform-limited pulsewidth of 150fs. A spectral modulation of over 40 features is achieved in a single pulse. We characterize the pulses using the STRUT (Spectrally and Temporally Resolved Upconversion Technique). Using predistortion techniques, we demonstrate that the pulses can be shaped in amplitude and phase. We create a complex pulse shape with hyperbolic secant amplitude and hyperbolic tangent frequency sweep, which is useful for applications in adiabatic rapid passage experiments.

Abstract:We report and demonstrate a reconfigurable photonic anamorphic stretch transform to realize time-bandwidth product (TBP) compression for microwave signals. A time-spectrum convolution system is employed to provide an ultra-high nonlinear dispersion up to several nanoseconds per gigahertz, which is required for processing nanosecond-long microwave signals. The group delay of the system can be engineered easily by programming a WaveShaper. Based on the proposed scheme, the TBP of a double pulse microwave signal is compressed by 1.9 times. Our proposal can provide a more efficient way to sample, digitize and store high-speed microwave signals, opening up entirely new perspectives for generation of many critical microwave signal processing modules.
