Abstract:Ocean observation system that involves multiple underwater vehicles and seafloor nodes plays an important role in better learning the ocean, where underwater wireless communication is mandatory for massive data interaction. Optical communication that has wide bandwidth and comprehensive working distance is the preferred method compared to acoustic and other methods. However, the presence of directionality makes the optical method difficult to use especially when the transceiver is equipped on a motive vehicle. In this study, an underwater free-space optical communication method of transmitting information is proposed. Characteristics of underwater optical transmission, as well as the photoelectric signal processing and modulation and demodulation algorithms, are studied and modeled. New approach for realizing underwater free-space optical communication is proposed and simulated. A prototype including a free-space optical transmitter and a receiver is developed; tests in different scenarios were carried out, and the results were observed: (1) by using the minimum number of LEDs, the effect of uniform lighting in space is achieved, and the transmitter coverage reaches 160°. (2) When the power of the transmitter is 10 W and the communication rate is 1 Mbps, the maximum communication distance reaches 13 m.

Abstract:This study proposed and experimentally demonstrated white-light source by mixing red, green and blue laser diodes (RGB-LDs) for wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM)-based high-speed underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) and large-area underwater solid-state lighting (SSL) simultaneously. The communication performance and underwater white-light SSL quality were investigated experimentally at an underwater transmission distance of 2.3 m. For each LD, an on-off keying (OOK) scheme was employed. To achieve both high-speed UWOC and large-area underwater SSL, optical filters and optical diffuser were employed. Aggregate data rate of 6.6 Gbps and the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.3298, 0.3390) were obtained. In addition, owning to the water attenuation, the underwater white-light SSL characteristics under various distances were studied in theory.

Abstract:The transmission distance, alignment requirement and stability of underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems are usually difficult to trade off. In this article, to ensure that the optical spot at the receiver end has sufficient optical power and uniform power distribution, the transmitter of a UWOC system is designed based on a single-color light-emitting diode (LED) array with a beam shaping system. The lens group-based beam shaping scheme not only extends the transmission distance, but still maintains the easy-alignment nature and stability of the LED-based UWOC link. At the receiver, a diversity reception scheme with an array of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), and a high-gain scheme combining a PMT with an optical antenna, are adopted and compared. To alleviate the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and compensate for the nonlinear distortion of the signal, hardware pre-equalization and nonlinear post-equalization based on Volterra are adopted at the transmitter and receiver, respectively. A UWOC transmission with a distance of 50 m and a data rate of 300 Mbps is realized, which is the highest rate-distance product realized by an ordinary monochromatic LED-based transmitter ever reported. The stability and practicability of the proposed UWOC system with relaxed alignment requirement are verified in laboratory and swimming pool, as well as in a real harsh sea environment.

Abstract:With extremely high information rate, great data transmission capability, and strong anti-interference, underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) becomes a promising short-range solution for various marine sensors and types of equipment. Related key technologies are discussed in this paper, and a laser diode (LD) and an avalanche photon diode (APD) are selected as light source and receiver. The 450 nm light beam will be generated, and modulated using orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) for its adaptive ability and resistance to multipath effect. Therefore, a Qualcomm QCA6410 chip with OFDM module is chosen as core processor. Furthermore, a constant current driver circuit, a TPS55340-based negative bias generator with temperature compensation, and a trans-impedance amplifier (TIA)-based post-stage signal processing unit are designed to steadily drive the LD, provide the high voltage leading to the avalanche effect of the APD and generate differential signals that can be received by the chip, respectively. Finally, a full-duplex UWOC system is implemented and tested in a one-meter-long water tank under several water conditions. Results show that a stable data link will be connected with water attenuation coefficient of less than $1.58\ m^{-1}$ , and an average data rate of 6.6 Mbits/s ∼ 10 Mbits/s can be achieved.

Abstract:The last decade has witnessed considerable progress in underwater wireless optical communication in complex environments, particularly in exploring the deep sea. However, it is difficult to maintain a precise point-to-point reception at all times due to severe turbulence in actual situations. To facilitate efficient data transmission, the color-conversion technique offers a paradigm shift in large-area and omnidirectional light detection, which can effectively alleviate the étendue limit by decoupling the field of view and optical gain. In this work, we investigated a series of difluoroboron β-diketonate fluorophores by measuring their photophysical properties and optical wireless communication performances. The emission colors were tuned from blue to green, and >0.5 Gb/s data transmission was achieved with individual color channel in free space by implementing an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation scheme. In the underwater experiment, the fluorophore with the highest transmission speed was fabricated into a 4×4 cm2 luminescent concentrator, with the concentrated emission from the edges coupled with an optical fiber array, for large-area photodetection and optical beam tracking. The net data rates of 130 Mb/s and 217 Mb/s were achieved based on nonreturn- to-zero on-off keying and OFDM modulation schemes, respectively. Further, the same device was used to demonstrate the linear light beam tracking function with high accuracy, which is beneficial for sustaining a reliable and stable connection in a dynamic, turbulent underwater environment.

Abstract:High speed wireless communications are highly desirable for many industrial and scientific underwater applications. Acoustic communications suffer from high latency and limited data rates, while Radio Frequency communications are severely limited by attenuation in seawater. Optical communications are a promising alternative, offering high transmission rates (up to Gb/s), while water has relatively low attenuation at visible wavelengths. Here we demonstrate the use of series-connected micro-light-emitting-diode (μLED) arrays consisting of 6 μLED pixels either 60 μm or 80 μm in diameter and operating at 450 nm. These devices increase the output power whilst maintaining relatively high modulation bandwidth. Using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) we demonstrate underwater wireless data transmission at rates of up to 4.92 Gb/s, 3.22 Gb/s and 3.4 Gb/s over 1.5 m, 3 m and 4.5 m, respectively, with corresponding bit error ratios (BERs) of 1.5 × 10 -3 , 1.1 × 10 -3 and 3.1 × 10 -3 , through clear tap water, and Mb/s rates through >5 attenuation lengths (ALs) in turbid waters.

Abstract:White light generated by mixing the red, green, and blue laser diodes (RGB LDs) for simultaneous high-speed underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) and high-efficiency underwater solid-state lighting (SSL) was proposed and demonstrated experimentally for the first time. The allowable maximum real-time data transmission rates of 3.2 Gbps, 3.4 Gbps, and 3.1 Gbps for RGB LDs with corresponding BERs of 3.6 × 10-3, 3.5 × 10-3 and 3.7 × 10-3 were obtained at a 2.3 m underwater transmission distance using an on-off keying (OOK) modulation scheme, respectively. And the corresponding UWOC aggregate data rate of 9.7 Gbps was achieved based on RGB LDs-based wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) UWOC. Moreover, UWOC and underwater SSL by using RGB LDs mixed white light were investigated at different scenarios over an underwater link of 2.3 m. The RGB LDs mixed white light-based UWOC system without optical diffusers yielded a maximum allowable data rate of 8.7 Gbps with Commission International de l'Eclairage coordinates (CIE) of (0.3154, 0.3354), a correlated color temperature of 6322 K, a color rendering index of 69.3 and a corresponding illuminance of 7084 lux. Furthermore, optical diffusers were employed to provide large-area underwater SSL. The LDs mixed white light-based UWOC system with line and circle optical diffusers implemented data rates of 5.9 Gbps and 6.6 Gbps with CIE coordinates of (0.3183, 0.3269) and (0.3298, 0.3390), respectively. This work suggests the potential of LDs for applications in high-efficiency underwater white-light SSL and high-speed UWOC.

Abstract:The limitations of underwater acoustic communication have been intensively discussed. In this scenario, electric-current communication method is considered as a feasible solution to explore as an alternative to acoustic communication in case of short-range distance. Compared to underwater acoustic communication, electric-current communication method shows its advantages such as fast propagation, high band width and being not prone to noise due to mechanical movement. In this paper, a DSP based underwater modem using electric current method is designed, implemented and evaluated. According to the experiments, error-free communication is possible in a water tank with a data rate of 1Mbps.

Abstract:In this paper, the mathematical model of underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is built, the design method and implementation process of the system are described, and the related variables in the system design are quantitatively analyzed, which provide a theoretical basis for the system implementation and experimental verification. In the process of system implementation, three methods are proposed. In the first method (Atmospheric equivalent channel), the underwater channel can be equivalent to the atmospheric channel with the same channel attenuation, so that the power budget verification can be carried out before the system is watertight, and the flexibility of system debugging can be improved. Water quality has a great influence on UWOC, so water quality measurement in uncharted water has become a critical technology. The second method (Water quality measurement) can measure the attenuation coefficient and attenuation of unity distance (AUD) through communication experiments. The system designed in this paper can achieve 32 m80 Mbps communication in the artificial pool (Firewater, the AUD is 0.55 dBm by the second method), and the bit error rate (BER) is 8.6106. Since the target scene is the deep sea, to reduce the difficulty of the experiment, the third method (Calculation of distance in the deep sea) can calculate the communication distance of the deep sea according to the communication distance of the experimental water. The system can complete more than 50 m80 Mbps communication in deep sea (The AUD is 0.25 dBm), and the BER is less than 1105.

Abstract:In this paper, the arrays consist of series-connected monochromatic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are proposed as the transmitter and receiver to implement an LED-to-LED underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system. An array of green LEDs is used as the transmitter to enhance the emitted optical power, and the high-frequency attenuation of the LEDs is compensated by a pre-equalization circuit. Red LEDs are connected in series, forming an array as the detector to extend the bandwidth of the receiver. Furthermore, a lens group for homogenizing and focusing the light spot is designed to increase optical power-density at the plane of detector, thus significantly enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the captured signal. The proposed array with 3 series-connected red LEDs can increase the data rate by 22.2 % compared with a single red LED. An LED-to-LED UWOC system with a data rate of 130 Mbps over a 7-m underwater channel is realized with a BER lower than the forward error correction (FEC) threshold of $3.8\times 10^{-3}$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the series-connected LEDs as the detector, combining with a lens group for homogenization and focusing, are applied in an LED-to-LED UWOC system, which achieve the highest rate-distance product among the reported LED detection-based wireless optical communication (WOC) systems.
Long-term and Real-time High-speed Underwater Wireless Optical Communications in Deep Sea

Abstract:Seafloor observation network can perform all-weather, long-term, continuous, real-time, and in-situ observation of the ocean by combing various observation methods including cabled seafloor nodes, self-contained nodes, as well as mobile platforms, where reliable and long-term high-speed underwater wireless communication becomes an essential demand. Recently, underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has emerged as a highly promising solution and is rapidly becoming a research hotspot for meeting this requirement. In this article, we demonstrate the experiment and application of high-speed UWOC system for deep sea seafloor observation network. To the best of our knowledge this is the first long-term real-time deep-sea UWOC link with bitrate as high as 125 Mbps. Between 30 m distance and at a depth of 1650 m, two-way Ethernet UWOC links are realized with 125 Mbps direction-adjustable green light link and 6.25 Mbps non-line-of-sight (NLOS) blue light link. High quality video transmission of 8K 30 FPS and 4K 120 FPS are realized through high-speed 125 Mbps green light link, with 100% peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) agreement, showing the capability of transmitting high-quality videos lossless. The 30-day long-term measurement results show that the BER performance of both 125 Mbps and 6.25 Mbps links is lower than 10-5, proving the stability and reliability of this UWOC system at depth of 1650 m. The maximum transmission distance for the green and blue light links are estimated to be 117.7 and 128.3 m with considering the geometry loss, which can be extended to 231.6 and 337.5 m without geometry loss. As the first long-term and real-time UWOC system in deep sea, we believe this demonstration can provide valuable experience for further UWOC studies and converged ocean observation networking with cabled and cable-less observation platforms.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed an underwater visible light communication system utilizing QAM-DMT and Multi-PIN reception to do the MRC receiving. The transmitter is a 600 mu m x 600 mu m green-emitting silicon substrate LED which has a peak emission wavelength of 521 nm. We study the effect of quiescent working point of the LED, the zero-padding number, the ISFA tap number and the ratio of two receivers on the BER performance of our VLC system. We notice that the ratio of two receivers can remarkably affect the performance of our system. We also measured the BER performance versus the bandwidth of the signal in 32QAM, 64QAM and 128QAM modulation format and we find the highest data rate of our system can reach 2.175 Gb/s. As far as we know, it is the highest data rate in under pure water VLC system using commercial LED and a PIN receiver.

Abstract:We develop an optical wireless communication-based 2K real-time video surveillance system prototype with field- programmable gate arrays. Using a 3-W blue light-emitting diode and an avalanche photo-diode, 20-m and 1.5-m real-time picture/video transmission with a high resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels is implemented in free space and pure water channel, respectively. It indicates the good performance of the prototype, which is the first step to realize underwater visual monitoring in future human-robot interaction applications.
Real-Time Underwater Wireless Optical Communication System Based on LEDs and Estimation of Maximum Communication Distance

Abstract:This paper presents a real-time underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system. The transmitter of our UWOC system is equipped with four blue LEDs, and we have implemented pre-emphasis technology to extend the modulation bandwidth of these LEDs. At the receiver end, a 3 mm diameter APD is utilized. Both the transmitter and receiver are housed in watertight chassis and are submerged in a water pool to conduct real-time underwater experiments. Through these experiments, we have obtained impressive results. The data rate achieved by our system reaches up to 135 Mbps, with a BER of 5.9 × 10-3, at a distance of 10 m. Additionally, we have developed a convenient method for measuring the underwater attenuation coefficient, using which we have found the attenuation coefficient of the water in experiments to be 0.289 dB/m. Furthermore, we propose a technique to estimate the maximum communication distance of an on-off keying UWOC system with intersymbol interference, based on the Q factor. By applying this method, we conclude that under the same water quality conditions, our system can achieve a maximum communication distance of 25.4 m at 80 Mbps. Overall, our research showcases the successful implementation of a real-time UWOC system, along with novel methods for measuring the underwater attenuation coefficient and estimating the maximum communication distance.

Abstract:A high-speed 40 Gbps Underwater Optical Wireless Communication (UOWC) system exploiting code division multiple access is proposed in this paper. Optical Code Division Multiple Access (OCDMA) systems play a crucial role in enhancing transmission capacity by allowing multiple channels to transmit data simultaneously. In this proposed work, four channels each assigned a distinct Sigma Shift Matrix (SSM) code and modulated with a data at 10 Gbps. Laser Diode (LD) sources operating in the green spectrum are used in UOWC systems due to their low attenuation. To ensure the feasibility of implementing the proposed system in real-world environments, the actual scattering and absorption coefficients from five different types of water are considered: Pure Sea (PS), Clear Ocean (CL), Coastal Sea (CS), Harbor I (HI), and Harbor II (HII). The system's performance is evaluated via the Quality Factor (Q-factor), Bit Error Rate (BER), and eye diagrams opening. The simulation results indicate that in PS water, which exhibits the lowest attenuation, the four channels achieve the longest underwater transmission distance of 48 m, with a Q-factor 4.1, log(BER) -4.7, and wide eye openings. Since CL and CS have higher attenuation than PS, they enable shorter transmission distances of 27.5 m and 16 m, respectively, while maintaining nearly the same Q-factor, log(BER), and eye diagrams. Conversely, the highest attenuation observed in HI and HII waterbodies results in the shortest underwater spans of 8.2 m and 5.05 m, respectively.

Abstract:We first study the transmission property of red light in water in terms of extinction coefficient and channel bandwidth via Monte Carlo simulation, with an interesting finding that red light outperforms blue-green light in highly turbid water. We further propose and experimentally demonstrate a broadband underwater wireless optical communication system based on a simple and cost-effective TO56 red-light laser diode. We demonstrate a 1.324-Gb/s transmission at a bit error rate (BER) of 2.02 × 10-3 over a 6-m underwater channel, by using 128-QAM OFDM signals and a low-cost 150-MHz positive-intrinsic-negative photodetector, with a record spectral efficiency higher than 7.32 bits/Hz. By using an avalanche photodetector and 32-QAM OFDM signals, we have achieved a record bit rate of 4.883 Gb/s at a BER of 3.20 × 10-3 over a 6-m underwater channel.

Abstract:With the growing number of underwater vehicles and devices used for marine environmental monitoring, there is an urgent need for real-time and high-speed underwater wireless communication technologies to transmit huge amounts of data. This poses great challenges to conventional underwater acoustic communication technology due to its low bandwidth and high latency. Therefore, underwater wireless optical communication with high bandwidth and low latency has become a promising technology. To this end, we develop the first underwater optical wireless sensor network prototype in this work. It consists of two sensor nodes and an optical hub. There is a transceiver circuit, a pH sensor, and an integrated temperature, salinity, and conductivity sensor in the sensor nodes enabling real-time underwater environmental monitoring. There are four transceivers facing four sides in the optical hub to implement bi-directional optical wireless communication with the sensor nodes. In a laboratory testbed and a field trial conducted in an outdoor diving pool, 100% packet success rates are achieved between the optical hub and the sensor nodes at a transmission distance of 60 cm. In the field trial, one of the sensor nodes is placed 60 cm away from the optical hub for real-time underwater environmental monitoring. The other sensor node is mounted on a remotely operated vehicle to collect underwater environmental information. This prototype shows great potential in future underwater mobile sensor networks and the underwater Internet of Things.

Abstract:Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has broad prospects in underwater real-time applications. We design and experimentally demonstrate a real-time discrete Fourier transform spread discrete multi-tone (DFT-S DMT) signal transmission based on a field programmable gate array for a blue-LED-based UWOC system with a data rate of up to 30 Mbps over a 15-m underwater channel. The architecture and usage of an on-chip resource as well as power consumption are analyzed and discussed. To reduce the impacts of multipath fading and received intensity fluctuation, spatial diversity reception is also introduced. Furthermore, the receiver sensitivity at a specified bit error rate (BER) threshold and the quality of the images are evaluated using three types of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes. At the BER threshold of 10-4, over 2.8-dB receiver sensitivity improvement is obtained by the DFT-S DMT scheme with the RS (64, 56) code as compared to the uncoded one at the data rate of 30 Mbps. The performance of BER, color difference, and structural similarity in the image transmission of DFT-S DMT is superior to that of the conventional hard clipping quadrature amplitude modulation DMT in a high-data-rate region because of the low peak-to-average-power ratio and ability to mitigate high-frequency fading in a band-limited UWOC system. With schemes of the RS code, DFT-S, and diversity reception, error-free transmission of images is achieved over a 15-m water channel. The proposed UWOC system has the advantages of low power consumption and portability, which foresees a bright future in underwater applications over short to moderate distances.
