Abstract:Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is a promising technology because of its high transmission rate, low latency, and small volume advantages. Therefore, it has drawn a lot of attention for real-time underwater wireless communication (UWC), especially for large-capacity transmission under short and medium distances. In this paper, we designed a real-time UWOC system with blue/green light sources and high-sensitive multi-pixel photon counters (MPPC), which can achieve an 8-Mbps half-duplex UWOC link in a standard 50-m swimming pool. Specifically, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation was deployed and realized using a field programmable gate array (FPGA) to complete real-time signal processing. Moreover, we have also analyzed the transmission stability under misalignment of the optical axis. Under an inclination no more than 2° for the blue-light receiver or an inclination no more than 7° for the green-light receiver, the 8-Mbps communication link was always steady, and the measured bit error ratios (BER) were both below 1×10-4. The results reveal that the proposed scheme can be beneficial to the real deployment of UWOC.

Abstract:With the development of the underwater Internet of Things (UIoTs), underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC), with characteristics of wide bandwidth, high transmission rate, and low time delay, has become a promising technology for high-speed underwater wireless communication. In this paper, the current status of real-time UWOC systems was reviewed in detail at first, and then a Gbps-level real-time full-duplex underwater wireless optical communication transceiver (RTFD-UWOCT) based on laser diodes (LDs) was proposed. Furthermore, the performance of the RTFD-UWOCT was validated through water tank experiments, swimming pool experiments, and sea trials. In a swimming pool with water attenuation coefficients being measured as 0.5311 dB/m (0.1233 m-1) at 455 nm and 0.4761 dB/m (0.1096 m-1) at 525 nm, respectively, we demonstrated a 30-m/1.2-Gbps full-duplex UWOC link. Moreover, a 35-m/1.0-Gbps uplink and a 40-m/1.0-Gbps downlink in the simplex operation mode were achieved. Afterward, to further explore the robustness of the RTFD-UWOCT to turbulence, a 20-m/1-Gbps full-duplex UWOC link was realized under bubble-induced turbulence generated by an air pump and bubble stones with an air flow rate of 8.5 L/min. Finally, considering the practicality and reliability, a sea trial was conducted at a depth of 10 m in Sun Bay, Sanya, China. A 5-m/0.25-Gbps real-time UWOC link in a real seawater channel was achieved with extremely high attenuation coefficients of 5.6794 dB/m (1.3077 m-1) at 455 nm and 6.0717 dB/m (1.3981 m-1) at 525 nm, respectively. Nevertheless, considering the link budget in a pure seawater channel, it is estimated that our proposed RTFD-UWOCT could achieve a 54.27-m/1.2-Gbps real-time full-duplex UWOC. The above results verified that the RTFD-UWOCT can achieve a full-duplex communication link in the short-to-medium range at Gbps levels, which is also expected to meet the high-speed communication needs of UIoTs in the future.

Abstract:In this paper, in order to improve the practicability and performance of the underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC), we propose a full-duplex (FD) UWOC system based on blue–green wavelength division, which make full use of the low-loss transmission window of water. Narrowband optical filters corresponding to the blue and green wavelengths are employed to eliminate self-interference caused by the backscattering. Single-photon sensitivity photomultipliers (PMTs) are exploited to extend the communication range. The impairment introduced by limited bandwidth and nonlinearity of the devices is compensated by post equalizers. Finally, an FD UWOC system reaching a data rate up to 200-Mbps at a distance of 100 m is demonstrated in a standard swimming pool, which is competitive both in range and data rate among the reported explorations of FD UWOC system. By using a nonlinear equalizer based on the memory polynomial model, the data rates are enhanced by 60-Mbps and 140 Mbps for the blue and green links compared with hard decision, respectively. By measuring the minimum optical power at which the bit error ratio (BER) is lower than the forward error correction (FEC) threshold, and combining with the attenuation coefficient of water as well as the geometric loss caused by the beam divergence, we predict that the proposed FD UWOC system can achieve 200 Mbps over 120 m or 100 Mbps over 139 m underwater transmission. Finally, we analyze and estimate the performance of the FD UWOC system in practical seawater.
Real-Time Underwater Wireless Optical Communication System Based on LEDs and Estimation of Maximum Communication Distance

Abstract:This paper presents a real-time underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system. The transmitter of our UWOC system is equipped with four blue LEDs, and we have implemented pre-emphasis technology to extend the modulation bandwidth of these LEDs. At the receiver end, a 3 mm diameter APD is utilized. Both the transmitter and receiver are housed in watertight chassis and are submerged in a water pool to conduct real-time underwater experiments. Through these experiments, we have obtained impressive results. The data rate achieved by our system reaches up to 135 Mbps, with a BER of 5.9 × 10-3, at a distance of 10 m. Additionally, we have developed a convenient method for measuring the underwater attenuation coefficient, using which we have found the attenuation coefficient of the water in experiments to be 0.289 dB/m. Furthermore, we propose a technique to estimate the maximum communication distance of an on-off keying UWOC system with intersymbol interference, based on the Q factor. By applying this method, we conclude that under the same water quality conditions, our system can achieve a maximum communication distance of 25.4 m at 80 Mbps. Overall, our research showcases the successful implementation of a real-time UWOC system, along with novel methods for measuring the underwater attenuation coefficient and estimating the maximum communication distance.

Abstract:The transmission distance, alignment requirement and stability of underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems are usually difficult to trade off. In this article, to ensure that the optical spot at the receiver end has sufficient optical power and uniform power distribution, the transmitter of a UWOC system is designed based on a single-color light-emitting diode (LED) array with a beam shaping system. The lens group-based beam shaping scheme not only extends the transmission distance, but still maintains the easy-alignment nature and stability of the LED-based UWOC link. At the receiver, a diversity reception scheme with an array of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), and a high-gain scheme combining a PMT with an optical antenna, are adopted and compared. To alleviate the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and compensate for the nonlinear distortion of the signal, hardware pre-equalization and nonlinear post-equalization based on Volterra are adopted at the transmitter and receiver, respectively. A UWOC transmission with a distance of 50 m and a data rate of 300 Mbps is realized, which is the highest rate-distance product realized by an ordinary monochromatic LED-based transmitter ever reported. The stability and practicability of the proposed UWOC system with relaxed alignment requirement are verified in laboratory and swimming pool, as well as in a real harsh sea environment.

Abstract:Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has broad prospects in underwater real-time applications. We design and experimentally demonstrate a real-time discrete Fourier transform spread discrete multi-tone (DFT-S DMT) signal transmission based on a field programmable gate array for a blue-LED-based UWOC system with a data rate of up to 30 Mbps over a 15-m underwater channel. The architecture and usage of an on-chip resource as well as power consumption are analyzed and discussed. To reduce the impacts of multipath fading and received intensity fluctuation, spatial diversity reception is also introduced. Furthermore, the receiver sensitivity at a specified bit error rate (BER) threshold and the quality of the images are evaluated using three types of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes. At the BER threshold of 10-4, over 2.8-dB receiver sensitivity improvement is obtained by the DFT-S DMT scheme with the RS (64, 56) code as compared to the uncoded one at the data rate of 30 Mbps. The performance of BER, color difference, and structural similarity in the image transmission of DFT-S DMT is superior to that of the conventional hard clipping quadrature amplitude modulation DMT in a high-data-rate region because of the low peak-to-average-power ratio and ability to mitigate high-frequency fading in a band-limited UWOC system. With schemes of the RS code, DFT-S, and diversity reception, error-free transmission of images is achieved over a 15-m water channel. The proposed UWOC system has the advantages of low power consumption and portability, which foresees a bright future in underwater applications over short to moderate distances.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a cost-efficient real-time field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based system for underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) at a data rate up to 25 Mb/s over a 10 m underwater channel. The transmitter of the system employs a commercial blue LED as a modulation light source and an FPGA unit for transmitter baseband signal processing, and an avalanche photo diode cascaded with an FPGA unit for receiver baseband signal processing at the receiver side. We also suggest a simplified system model to characterize underwater optical link. Three types of hard-decision forward error correction codes are introduced to investigate the impact on the receiver sensitivity in long distance transmission cases. By adding additional link attenuation, we experimentally measure the attenuation coefficients for different water conditions. Based on the measured results, the achievable link distance for clear ocean water is estimated up to 118 m at the transmitted electrical power of 30 dBm. The proposed UOWC system takes both implementation complexity and cost into consideration and also provides a significant guidance to the future real-time high-speed underwater optical communications.

Abstract:∗Abstract: In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a highspeed underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) system based on green and blue laser diodes (LDs) with wavelength and polarization multiplexing. By combining bit-loading quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), the system affords 4×4 communication links over 2-m underwater plus 0.5-m free-space distance. A sum data rate beyond 25 Gbps is reached with bit-error-rate (BER) of each link satisfying the forward error correction (FEC) criteria of 3.8×10-3.

Abstract:In this study, a quasi-omnidirectional underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system is implemented with a prismatic array consisting of three uniformly distributed high-power LED modules as the transmitter. Over a 10-m underwater channel in a 50-m standard swimming pool, a data rate of 22 Mbps is achieved without adopting any digital signal processing algorithm. With zero forcing (ZF) based frequency domain equalization (FDE) and a maximum ratio combining (MRC) algorithm, the maximum net data rates achieved are 69.65 Mbps, 39.8 Mbps and 29.85 Mbps over 10-m, 30-m, and 40-m underwater channels, respectively. In the proposed UWOC system, the receiver could successfully capture optical signals at different directions from the transmitter and the bit error rates (BERs) measured in different directions show small fluctuations. The proposed system could meet the demands of high-speed data transmission among units in a swarm-robot system and last meter user access in an underwater optical cellular network system.

Abstract:Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has demonstrated high-speed and low-latency properties in clear and coastal ocean water because of the relatively low attenuation 'window' for blue-green wavelengths from 450 nm to 550 nm. However, there are different attenuation coefficients for transmission in ocean water at different wavelengths, and the light transmission more seriously deteriorates with fluctuations in the water turbidity. Therefore, traditional UWOC using a single wavelength or coarse blue-green wavelengths has difficulty tolerating variations in water turbidity. Dense wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology provides sufficient communication channels with a narrow wavelength spacing and minimal channel crosstalk. Here, we improve the UWOC in clear and coastal ocean water using dense blue-green WDM. A cost-effective WDM emitter is proposed with directly modulated blue-green laser diodes. Dense wavelength beam combination and collimation are demonstrated in a 20-metre underwater channel from 490 nm to 520 nm. Demultiplexing with a minimum channel spacing of 2 nm is realized by an optical grating. Remarkably, our WDM results demonstrate an aggregate data rate exceeding 10 Gbit/s under diverse water turbidity conditions, with negligible crosstalk observed for each channel. This is the densest WDM implementation with a record channel spacing of 2 nm and the highest channel count for underwater blue-green light communications, providing turbidity-tolerant signal transmission in clear and coastal ocean water.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel scheme based on underwater optical wireless communication and positioning (UOWC-UOWP) for an underwater wireless sensor network (UWSN). A dual-hop system is adopted to extend the limited coverage area of the UWSN with mobile nodes, consisting of a grade-index plastic optical fiber (GI-POF) link and a wireless link. Specifically, the mini-LED offers high-speed and flexible uplink transmission and the high-power LED enables both downlink transmission and positioning. The time frame design and code division multiplexing access (CDMA) support multi-user signal transmission. Proof-of-concept experiments with GI-POF and wireless link demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme, which offers full-duplex communication, high-precise positioning and extended distance. To the best of our knowledge, the UOWC-UOWP convergent system is proposed for the first time. It has great potential to support high-capacity transmission between mobile nodes for future underwater transmission scenarios.

Abstract:We proposed a long-distance underwater wireless optical communication with a single photon-counting system in a laboratory environment by using non-return to zero on-off keying modulation. The system successfully achieved a data rate of 1Mbps through a 15m PVC tube by adding in 80dB attenuator and using a pigtailed fiber 450nm blue laser diode. The water channel was measured to have an attenuation coefficient comparable to clean seawater. The experimental results show that under condition of only average 1.2 photons in single optical pulse, photon counting UOWC with a BER of 1. 610−4 and a baud rate of 1 Mbps can be achieved. Based on the measured minimum required power in the water channel, the transmission performance was predicted to be 140m and 310m in the clean seawater and pure seawater, respectively.

Abstract:A novel concept of using a leaky plastic optical fiber (POF) as the leaky feeder for underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The leaky POF can potentially improve the UWOC coverage. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is employed in the demonstration to increase spectral efficiency and robustness to modal dispersion of the leaky POF with a large core. A bit rate of 224.61Mb/s (net bit rate: 183.69Mb/s) at the two discrete radiation points along a 10-m leaky POF feeder is achieved using 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)–OFDM modulation. Over a 30-cm underwater channel, the mean bit errors (BERs) measured at the two points are 3.37×10−5 and 3.35×10−3, respectively, which are below the FEC threshold of 3.8×10−3.

Abstract:To enable high-speed long-distance underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) supplementing traditional underwater wireless communication, a low-power 520 nm green laser diode (LD) based UOWC system was proposed and experimentally demonstrated to implement maximal communication capacity of up to 2.70 Gbps data rate over a 34.5 m underwater transmission distance by using non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) modulation scheme. Moreover, maximum data rates of up to 4.60 Gbps, 4.20 Gbps, 3.93 Gbps, 3.88 Gbps, and 3.48 Gbps at underwater distances of 2.3 m, 6.9 m, 11.5 m, 16.1 m and 20.7 m were achieved, respectively. The light attenuation coefficient of ~0.44 dB/m was obtained and the beam divergence angle is 0.35°, so the aallowable underwater transmission distance can be estimated to be ~90.7 m at a data rate of 0.15 Gbps with a corresponding received light-output power of -33.01 dBm and a bit-error rate (BER) of 2.0 ×10-6. In addition, when the data rate is up to 1 Gbps, the UOWC distance is predicted to be ~62.7 m for our proposed UOWC system. The achievements we make are suitable for applications requiring high-speed long-distance real-time UOWC.

Abstract:Presently, most of the long-reach underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems employ laser diodes rather than light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as the transmitters. Due to lasers’ smaller divergence angles, those UWOC systems could realize longer communication links. Although LED-based long-reach UWOC has distinguished advantages, it suffers from very low received optical power. Fortunately, highly sensitive multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) and energy efficient pulse position modulation (PPM) pave a way towards LED-based long-reach UWOC. In this paper, we investigated the underlying working principle of an MPPC and proposed a UWOC system based on single LED as well as a lens-free MPPC with digital output. The relationship between the MPPC p.e. threshold and its received optical power was theoretically studied and further proved by experimental results. Single 2.3-MHz, 3-W blue LED was used as the transmitter to generate 8-PPM to 64-PPM signals with a 5-MHz slot frequency. After a 46-m underwater transmission, the measured BERs were all below the forward error correction (FEC) limit, which were achieved with less than 100 incident photons during each pulse slot.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel concept on underwater fiber wireless (Fi-Wi) communication system with a fully passive wireless front end. A low-cost step-index (SI) plastic optical fiber (POF) together with a passive collimating lens at the front end composes the underwater Fi-Wi architecture. We have achieved a 1.71-Gb/s transmission at a mean BER of 4.97 x 10(-3) (1.30 x 10(-3) when using power loading) over a 50-m SI-POF and 2-m underwater wireless channel using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Although the wireless part is very short, it actually plays a crucial role in practical underwater implementation, especially in deep sea. Compared with the wired solution (e.g. using a 52-m POF cable without the UWOC part), the proposed underwater Fi-Wi scheme can save optical wet-mate connectors that are sophisticated, very expensive and difficult to install in deep ocean. By combining high-capacity robust POF with the mobility and ubiquity of underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC), the proposed underwater Fi-Wi technology will find wide application in ocean exploration. Abstract:Seafloor observation network can perform all-weather, long-term, continuous, real-time, and in-situ observation of the ocean by combing various observation methods including cabled seafloor nodes, self-contained nodes, as well as mobile platforms, where reliable and long-term high-speed underwater wireless communication becomes an essential demand. Recently, underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has emerged as a highly promising solution and is rapidly becoming a research hotspot for meeting this requirement. In this article, we demonstrate the experiment and application of high-speed UWOC system for deep sea seafloor observation network. To the best of our knowledge this is the first long-term real-time deep-sea UWOC link with bitrate as high as 125 Mbps. Between 30 m distance and at a depth of 1650 m, two-way Ethernet UWOC links are realized with 125 Mbps direction-adjustable green light link and 6.25 Mbps non-line-of-sight (NLOS) blue light link. High quality video transmission of 8K 30 FPS and 4K 120 FPS are realized through high-speed 125 Mbps green light link, with 100% peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) agreement, showing the capability of transmitting high-quality videos lossless. The 30-day long-term measurement results show that the BER performance of both 125 Mbps and 6.25 Mbps links is lower than 10-5, proving the stability and reliability of this UWOC system at depth of 1650 m. The maximum transmission distance for the green and blue light links are estimated to be 117.7 and 128.3 m with considering the geometry loss, which can be extended to 231.6 and 337.5 m without geometry loss. As the first long-term and real-time UWOC system in deep sea, we believe this demonstration can provide valuable experience for further UWOC studies and converged ocean observation networking with cabled and cable-less observation platforms.

Abstract:Advanced light sources in the blue-green band are crucial for underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems. Vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VECSELs) can produce high output power and good beam quality, making them suitable for UWOC. This paper presents a 108 m distance UWOC based on a 100 mW 490 nm blue VECSEL and an acousto-optic modulator (AOM). The high-quality beam, which is near diffraction-limited, undergoes relatively small optical attenuation when using a conventional avalanche photodiode (APD) as the detector and employing 64-pulse position modulation (PPM). At the time-slot frequency of 50 MHz, the bit error rate (BER) of the UWOC was 2.7 × 10-5. This is the first reported AOM-based UWOC system with a transmission distance over 100 m. The estimated maximum transmission distance may be improved to about 180 m by fully utilizing the detection accuracy of the APD according to the measured attenuation coefficient of the blue VECSEL used. This type of UWOC system, composed of a high-beam-quality light source and a conventional detector, make it more closely suited to practical applications.
