Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials featuring high surface area, ordered pore structures and amenability for post-synthetic modification. Integrating MOF thin films with various substrate materials could enable applications in separations, heterogeneous catalysis, chemical sensors and electronic devices. However, it is difficult to find a universal approach to deposit uniform and high-quality MOF coatings on a variety of substrate materials. Previous attempts often require surface modification methods that may not be generally applicable. In this talk, interfacial engineering using atomic layer deposited (ALD) templates will be discussed for forming MOF thin films on various substrates. We found that ALD metal oxides are effective in promoting the heterogeneous nucleation of MOFs and also readily hydrolyzed into hydroxy double salts (HDSs) for rapid transformation to MOFs. With ALD template layers, conformal and functional MOF coatings were integrated on fibers, membranes and laminated structures. Accordingly, we developed a series of MOF-functionalized fibers for adsorption and catalytic degradation of hazardous compounds. Furthermore, we obtained ultra-thin mixed-metal MOF skin layers on porous alumina supports for membrane separation, and achieved large propylene permeance (up to 4.5×10-8 mol·m-2·s-1·Pa-1) and high propylene/propane selectivity over 250. We anticipate that this platform technology will also lead to potential device structures for chemical sensing, energy storage and many other scenarios.

Abstract:Controlled synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based materials with multiple levels of porous structures across different length scales is of great interest in various applications but it still remains challenging. Most of the current strategies are time consuming and labor intensive, and not readily scaled-up. In this work, we introduce a straightforward one-pot fabrication strategy to prepare a robust and flexible hierarchically macro-meso-micro porous HKUST-1/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite through solvent evaporation, in which MOF crystallization and polymer precipitation are combined together. The effect of the MOF precursor and the polymer initial amount on the morphology of the final composite was thoroughly studied. The interaction between the MOF and the polymer during the evaporation process is the key factor, which would limit the mobility of the polymer chains and cause instability in the MOF growth, thus endowing the composite with a hierarchically macro-meso-micro porous structure. This "all-in-one" porous structure could enhance the mass transport property of molecules within the composite. The obtained HKUST-1/PVDF composite showed an enhanced CO2 adsorption rate constant of 0.821 min(-1) (298 K, 1 bar), which was 3.5 times higher than that of the pristine MOF. In addition, the composite showed an equivalent gas adsorption capacity under all tested pressures and greatly improved water stability.

Abstract:Integration of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on textiles shows promise for enabling facile deployment and expanding MOF applications. While MOFs deposited on flat substrates can show relatively smooth surface texture, most previous reports of MOFs integrated on fibers show poor conformality with many individual crystal domains. Here we report a new low-temperature (<70 degrees C) method to deposit uniform and smooth MOF thin films on fiber surfaces using an energy enhanced layer-by-layer (LbL) method with an ALD Al2O3 nucleation layer. Cross-sectional TEM images show a well-defined core@shell structure of the MOF-functionalized fiber, and SEM shows a flat MOF surface texture. We analyze the thickness and mass increase data of LbL HKUST-1 MOF thin films on ALD-coated polypropylene fibers and find the growth rate to be 288-290 ng cm(-2) per LbL cycle. Unlike planar LbL MOF embodiments where adsorption capacities are difficult to quantify, the large volume quantity on a typical fiber mat enables accurate surface area measurement of these unique MOF morphologies. After 40 LbL cycles the MOFs on fibers exhibit N-2 adsorption BET surface areas of up to 93.6 m(2) g(MOF+fiber)(-1) (similar to 535 m(2) g(MOF)(-1)) and breakthrough test results reveal high dynamic loadings for NH3 (1.37 molNH(3) kg(MOF+fiber)(-1)) and H2S (1.49 molH(2)S kg(MOF+fiber)(-1)). This synthesis route is applicable to many polymer fibers, and the fiber@ALD@MOF structure is promising for gas filtration, membrane separation, catalysis, chemical sensing and other applications.

Abstract:A facile secondary growth method for fabrication of highly b-oriented MFI zeolite films is demonstrated. This method enables the growth of b-oriented MFI seed monolayers into highly b-oriented dense films in the TEOS-TPAOH-H2O system without any additive or extra treatment. Suppression of twin growth is achieved via the increase of water content in the synthesis solution. A clear correlation between the film orientation and the synthesis composition for secondary growth is presented. Compared with previously reported strategies in controlling the orientation of MFI zeolite films, this method offers greater operating window of the synthesis composition (H2O/Si = 1500-3000, TPA(+)/Si = 0.1-0.5, OH-/Si = 0.1-0.2) and synthesis condition (150-180 degrees C, 4-8 h). The thickness of b-oriented MFI films (370 nm-610 nm) can be tuned by adjusting the water amount or the synthesis condition. The new synthesis method uses lower amount of organic template and silica source making it potentially more economical and environmentally friendly and thus attractive for industrial implementation. Abstract:The fabrication of MFI zeolite films with particular b-axis orientation is especially fascinating. Unlike the conventional alkaline or hydrofluoric acid (HF) assisted neutral synthesis route, here we develop a novel neutral synthesis solution system of TPABr/fumed silica/H2O without the use of HF and successfully synthesize highly b-oriented MFI zeolite films on glass-plate substrates by secondary growth. The localized weak alkaline environment created by the dissolved Na2O species from the substrate is identified as the key factor for the depolymerization of fumed silica and subsequently the in-plane growth of zeolite seed layers. Continuous b-oriented MFI films can also be synthesized on other substrates in the presence of a glass plate or a trace amount of NaOH, which making our neutral synthesis route promising for the direct synthesis of MFI zeolite films and membranes on various substrates.

Abstract:Continuous h-oriented MFI zeolite films were prepared on stainless steel substrates by dynamic hydrothermal synthesis using a rotating convection oven. The influences of rotation speed, crystallization temperature and crystallization time were studied. X-ray diffraction was used to identify the orientation of the zeolite films. Compared with the static method, a shorter synthesis time, a more uniform particle size distribution and better film orientation were observed for the dynamic method, and this is attributed to the low concentration and thermal gradients that exist in the bulk solution and to the washing action of the bulk solution toward the substrate surface.

Abstract:Continuous b-oriented zeolite MFI monolayer films (<0.4 pm thick) were prepared by in situ crystallization on metal substrates (stainless steel and aluminum alloy) using a synthesis solution 0.32TPAOH:TEOS:165H(2)O (TPAOH: tetra-propylammonium hydroxide, TEOS: tetraethylorthosilicate). Effects of crystallization temperature and time, surface roughness, position and chemical nature of the substrate, and aging time of the synthesis solution were investigated and a mechanism for the b-oriented monolayer thin film formation was discussed. The supported films were characterized with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Polishing of the film with a normal lab polisher leads to a continuous ultrathin zeolite film with a surface roughness less than 0.05 mum. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Based on stepwise deposition of MOF films on a colloid crystal substrate, a strategy for fabricating photonic MOF films was developed. We found that the integration of a photonic structure endows MOF materials with unique optical properties, which can be used as a general and effective transduction scheme for a convenient study of the host-guest chemistry of MOFs.

Abstract:Supported Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) with a high specific surface area are of great interest for applications in gas storage, separation, sensing, and catalysis. In the present work we report the synthesis of a novel composite architecture of MOF materials supported on a flexible mat of electrospun nanofibers. The system, based on three-dimensional interwoven nanofibers, was designed by using a low-cost and scalable multistep synthesis protocol involving a combination of electrospinning and low-temperature atomic layer deposition of oxide materials, and their subsequent solvothermal conversion under either conventional or microwave-assisted heating. This highly versatile approach allows the production of different types of supported MOF crystals with controlled sizes, morphology, orientation and high accessibility.

Abstract:The self-assembly of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is crucial for the functional design of materials, including energy storage materials, catalysts, selective separation materials and optical crystals. However, oriented self-assembly of MOFs is still a challenge. Herein, we propose a novel strategy to drive oriented self-assembly of MOF polyhedral particles at the water–liquid interface by photoinitiated monomer polymerization. The MOF polyhedral particles self-assemble into ordered close-packed structures with obvious orientation in the polymer film, and the orientation is determined by the casting solvent on the water surface. The prepared large-area MOF polymer films show a Janus structure, containing a MOF monolayer and a polymer layer, and can be easily transferred to a variety of substrates. In addition, mixed MOF particles with different sizes and morphologies can also be assembled by this method. This novel method can be foreseen to provide a powerful driving force for the development of MOF self-assembly and to create more possibilities for utilizing the anisotropic properties of MOFs.

Abstract:The construction of metal–organic framework (MOF) films is a crucial step for integrating them into technical applications. However, due to the crystallization nature, most MOFs are difficult to grow spontaneously or be processed into films. Here, we demonstrate a convenient strategy for constructing MOF films by using modulators to achieve homogeneous assembly of MOF clusters. Small clusters in the early growth steps of MOFs can be stabilized by modulators to form fluidic precursors with good processibility. Then, simple removal of modulators will trigger the crosslinking of MOF clusters and lead to the formation of continuous films. This strategy is universal for the fabrication of several types of MOF films with large scale and controllable thickness, which can be deposited on a variety of substrates as well as can be patterned in micro/nano resolution. Additionally, versatile composite MOF films can be easily synthesized by introducing functional materials during the crosslinking process, which brings them broader application prospects. Abstract:AbstractWe report that continuous MOF films with highly controlled thickness (from 44 to 5100 nm) can be deposited over length scales greater than 80 centimeters by a facile, fast, and cost‐effective spray‐coating method. Such success relies on our discovery of unprecedented perfectly dispersed colloidal solutions consisting of amorphous MOF nanoparticles, which we adopted as precursors that readily converted to the crystalline films upon low‐temperature in situ heating. The colloidal solutions allow for the fabrication of compact and uniform MOF films on a great deal of substrates such as fluorine‐doped tin oxide, glass, SiO2, Al2O3, Si, Cu, and even flexible polycarbonate, widening their technological applications where substrates are essential. Despite the present work focuses on the fabrication of uniform cobalt‐(2‐methylimidazole)2 and zinc‐(2‐methylimidazole)2 films, our findings mark a great possibility in producing other high‐quality MOF thin films on a large scale.

Abstract:Effective deposition of MOFs on "inert" solid surfaces is very challenging. In this work, we found that polydopamine, which can be facilely and tightly formed on any types as well as any forms of solid surfaces, could be used as an effective nucleation center for MOF deposition. Based on this finding, various MOFs were successfully deposited onto nanofibrous polymer membranes, especially the commercially available "inert" ones, affording hierarchically structured porous films.

Abstract:By virtue of their extraordinarily high surface areas, ordered pore structures, various compositions and rich functionality, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are of great interest in diverse fields such as gas separation, sensing, catalysis, energy, environment science and biomedicine. However, the difficulty in processing MOF crystals and controlling the superstructure of MOFs is emerging as critical issue in their application. Herein, we report that a robust template, i.e., nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC), can be used for the synthesis of MOF materials with one‐dimensional (1D) nanofiber morphology. The NFC@MOF core‐shell nanofibers with a uniform network structure and high aspect ratios can be prepared by use of this template. The small crystal size, flexibility and good dispersity of NFC@MOF nanofibers make it convenient for macroscale assembly and solution processing of MOF materials. A proof‐of‐concept study has been demonstrated that free‐standing MOF nanofiber membranes represent good performance in applications of water treatment and heterogeneous catalysis reaction. This paper comprehensively reviews the fabrication methods of pure MOF membranes and films, including in situ solvothermal synthesis, secondary growth, electrochemical deposition, counter diffusion growth, liquid phase epitaxy and solvent-free synthesis in the category of different MOF families with specific metal species, including Zn-based, Cu-based, Zr-based, Al-based, Ni-based, and Ti-based MOFs.

Abstract:Constructing architectures with hierarchical porosity has been widely considered as the most efficient way to bypass the problems related to slow mass transfer and inaccessibility of internal space in MOFs. Now, a crystal-growth-dominated strategy is proposed to fabricate hierarchically porous MOFs (HP-MOFs). When the crystal growth is dominated by the monomer attachment, the aggregation of nonionic surfactant or polymer can be easily captured and released during the crystal growth process, resulting in the formation and ordering hierarchical pores along the radial direction. Owing to the accelerated mass diffusion and more exposed active sites of this design, HP-MOFs exhibited an enhanced catalytic efficiency in styrene oxidation.

Abstract:The intrinsic porosity in the periodic structures of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) endows them with a great potential for membrane separation. However, facile fabrication of crystalline MOF membranes has been challenging and limited to few materials for economic and environmental considerations. Herein, a continuous Zr‐MOF thin film with a thickness of ≈180 nm has been fabricated via in situ recrystallization of MOF nanoparticles on the porous support under formic acid vapor. Owing to the inherent microporosity and the well‐established hydrophilicity during membrane fabrication, the MOF thin films exhibit excellent pervaporation performance with separation factors of 2630, 501 and fluxes of 1.45, 1.41 kg m−2 h−1) for n‐butanol dehydration and methanol/methyl tert‐butyl ether (MeOH/MTBE) separation, respectively. The structural stability of the film has been further confirmed by its steady performance in the 10‐day pervaporation test. This in situ recrystallization method induced by a trace amount of acid vapor with no extra ingredients opens a new avenue for the facile membrane fabrication of various MOF materials to feasibly realize their versatile potential as membrane materials. Inspired by modulated synthesis of metal–organic frameworks (MOF) involving acidic modulators, facile and green fabrication of continuous Zr‐MOF films is achieved via in situ recrystallization of MOF nanoparticles confined on the porous support induced by trace acid vapor without extra ingredients. Owing to the inherent microporosity and the well‐established hydrophilicity, the MOF thin films exhibit excellent pervaporation performance.
