Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a hybrid structure microlaser on chip with a single CdSe nanowire attached to a high-Q silica microdisk cavity at room temperature. When pumped by a 532 nm pulse laser, both single-longitudinal mode and multi-longitudinal mode lasers with linewidth of 0.18 nm are obtained from the hybrid structure with a 58-mu m-diameter microdisk and a 250-nm diameter nanowire. The measured lasing threshold of the microlaser is as low as 100 mu J/cm(2). (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate thermo-optic locking of a semiconductor laser to an integrated toroidal optical microcavity. The lock is maintained for time periods exceeding twelve hours, without requiring any electronic control systems. Fast control is achieved by optical feedback induced by scattering centers within the microcavity, with thermal locking due to optical heating maintaining constructive interference between the cavity and the laser. Furthermore, the optical feedback acts to narrow the laser linewidth, with ultra high quality microtoroid resonances offering the potential for ultralow linewidth on-chip lasers.

Abstract:The key properties of the self-injection locking regime of a laser diode to a high-Q microresonator with whispering gallery mode made of crystalline silicon are considered. It has been experimentally demonstrated the possibility of the self-injection locking using cavity made of crystalline silicon. This result opens up new possibilities for creating narrow-band highly stable laser sources in midIR, over 2.3 microns, on a new hardware base.

Abstract:Self-injection locking (SIL) of laser diodes to microresonators is a powerful technique that enables compact narrow linewidth lasers. Here, we extend this technique to chip-integrated Fabry-Pérot microresonators, which offer high-quality factors and large mode volumes in a compact footprint, reducing fundamental thermo-refractive noise. The resonators consist of a silicon nitride waveguide terminated by two photonic crystal reflectors fabricated via scalable ultraviolet lithography. Evanescent side-coupling allows precise tuning of the SIL feedback mechanism. We present a theoretical model and experimentally demonstrate SIL, resulting in a fundamental thermorefractive-noise-limited laser. We achieve excellent agreement between the experimental results and theoretical model. These results complement current SIL techniques and are relevant to chip-scale low-noise laser systems.

Abstract:Optical microcavities have been widely used in nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and laser technologies. Here we demonstrate the self-injection locking of a distributed feedback diode laser using home-made high-finesse Fabry-Perot microcavity. The Fabry-Perot microcavity is fabricated from an x-cut lithium niobate crystal with highly reflective coatings. Frequency pulling effect can be observed for a successful locking, and results in a single-longitudinal mode lasing with narrow linewidth. The lasing wavelength and output power are found robust to the laser-diode current and temperature variations, in comparison to the free-running case. We further characterize the laser linewidth with beat note measurement with a high-performance external cavity diode laser, with beat-note linewidth of 601.85 kHz. This results shows a new method for laser frequency stabilization in a simple setup, and may find applications in telecommunication and spectroscopy.

The tuning range is about 16 nm and the tuning efficiency of the device is estimated to be about 0.56 nm/mW, owing to the Vernier effect.

Abstract:We present a self-locking laser system that does not require operator interventions. The system automatically finds a desired atomic transition and subsequently locks to it. Moreover, it has the ability to automatically detect if the laser is out of lock and activate the re-locking process. The design was implemented on two different diode lasers, a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) diode laser and a Fabry Perot (FP) diode laser, used as a repump laser for a magneto-optical trap in a laser cooling experiment and a Raman laser for a four-level Raman transition experiment, respectively. The design relies on frequency modulation transfer spectroscopy to obtain a sub-Doppler atomic spectrum of rubidium-85. This spectrum is then demodulated to obtain zero-crossing linear slopes at the exact points of each atomic and crossover transition. The frequency modulation, the signal analysis, and the automatic locking and re-locking of the lasers are all implemented using an Arduino Due microcontroller. The lock loop has a bandwidth of 7 kHz. The lasers used for the design are characterized, and the robustness of the lock is analyzed. The achieved linewidths of DBR and FP lasers are 1.4 and 5.5 MHz, respectively. The frequency drifts of both lasers are a few 100 kHz over a course of days. The capture range of the locking system is up to 4.9 GHz for the DBR laser and 725 MHz for the FP laser. Both lasers performed well under actual experimental conditions.

Abstract:Self-injection locking is a dynamic phenomenon, which provides passive stabilization of a laser emission frequency via resonant optical feedback. The stabilization coefficient depends on the level of the feedback and quality factor of the external resonant structure creating the feedback. A conventional self-injection locked laser (SIL) based on a dielectric cavity involves barely tunable resonant Rayleigh scattering (RRS). In this work we study theoretically a scheme of a SIL via a high-Q microresonator with a drop-port coupled mirror, in which the optical feedback level is optimally adjusted by tuning the drop-port mirror coupling. We show that the additional reflector can improve the laser stabilization and power handling efficiency if compared with the classic RRS-based scheme.

4H-SiC microring opto-mechanical oscillator with a self-injection locked pump

Abstract:We have demonstrated, for the first time to our knowledge, self-injection locking of a distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser to a multimode 4H-silicon carbide (4H-SiC) microring resonator, and observed resonant opto-mechanical oscillation in the cavity modes. While the fundamental transverse-electric mode family of the silicon carbide microring was optically pumped, Stokes light was generated in the adjacent fundamental transverse-magnetic resonant mode. The threshold of the process did not exceed 5~mW of light entering the cavity characterized with a loaded optical quality factor of $\smash{2\times10^6}$. These results mark a significant milestone in unlocking the potential of 4H-SiC through turnkey soliton microcomb generation and empowering future advancements in areas such as cavity optomechanics using this versatile and quantum-friendly material platform.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a feedback tunable self-injection locked (SIL) narrow linewidth laser, the feedback light intensity is dynamically adjusted to find the best locking state. The self-injection locked laser is composed of distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor laser and high quality (Q) factor silicon nitride (SiN) external cavity, tunable sagnac loop reflector is used to achieve arbitrary ratio of feedback light and output light on the basis of add-drop type high Q microring resonator (MRR). The results show that the SIL state is closely related to the ratio of feedback light. When the optical feedback ratio is higher than -14 dB, a robust SIL state can be achieved, and the locking state is independent of the phase of the feedback light, the intrinsic linewidth is narrowed from 130 kHz to 1 kHz. By optimizing the ratio of feedback light to -9.3 dB, a narrow linewidth output of 345 Hz can be achieved. This work has important application value in the field of coherent laser communication and coherent detection.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a hybrid modulation bandwidth enhanced self-injection locking laser by butt coupling a commercial distributed feedback laser with an external high-Q silicon nitride microring reflector (MRR). The MRR keeps the laser in strong self-injection locking state with photon-photon resonance, which can realize direct modulation bandwidth enhanced and stable narrow linewidth single-mode output. With the further optimization of MRR parameters, the 3-dB modulation bandwidth and the linewidth of the hybrid laser are enhanced to 15.28 GHz from 7.70 GHz and narrowed to 4 kHz from 600 kHz, respectively. This work makes full use of the advantages of self-injection and integrated photonic technology, which has potential applications in many fields.

Abstract:The stabilization and manipulation of laser frequency by means of an external cavity are nearly ubiquitously used in fundamental research and laser applications. While most of the laser light transmits through the cavity, in the presence of some back-scattered light from the cavity to the laser, the self-injection locking effect can take place, which locks the laser emission frequency to the cavity mode of similar frequency. The self-injection locking leads to dramatic reduction of laser linewidth and noise. Using this approach, a common semiconductor laser locked to an ultrahigh- Q microresonator can obtain sub-Hertz linewidth, on par with state-of-the-art fiber lasers. Therefore it paves the way to manufacture high-performance semiconductor lasers with reduced footprint and cost. Moreover, with high laser power, the optical nonlinearity of the microresonator drastically changes the laser dynamics, offering routes for simultaneous pulse and frequency comb generation in the same microresonator. Particularly, integrated photonics technology, enabling components fabricated via semiconductor CMOS process, has brought increasing and extending interest to laser manufacturing using this method. In this article, we present a comprehensive tutorial on analytical and numerical methods of laser self-injection locking, as well a review of most recent theoretical and experimental achievements.

Abstract:Self-injection locking has emerged as a crucial technique for coherent optical sources, spanning from narrow linewidth lasers to the generation of localized microcombs. This technique involves key components, namely a laser diode and a high-quality cavity that induces narrow-band reflection back into the laser diode. However, in prior studies, the reflection mainly relied on the random intracavity Rayleigh backscattering, rendering it unpredictable and unsuitable for large-scale production and wide-band operation. In this work, we present a simple approach to achieve reliable intracavity reflection for self-injection locking to address this challenge by introducing a Sagnac loop into the cavity. This method guarantees robust reflection for every resonance within a wide operational band without compromising the quality factor or adding complexity to the fabrication process. As a proof of concept, we showcase the robust generation of narrow linewidth lasers and localized microcombs locked to different resonances within a normal-dispersion microcavity. Furthermore, the existence and generation of localized patterns in a normal-dispersion cavity with broadband forward–backward field coupling is first proved, as far as we know, both in simulation and in experiment. Our research offers a transformative approach to self-injection locking and holds great potential for large-scale production.

Abstract:Microcavity-based microlasers are the kernel light sources for integrating photonics and optoelectronics. The traditional pump light frequency locking mainly utilizes a complex system with optoelectronic feedback, which requires a high-cost narrow-linewidth pump laser and limits the application of microlasers in integrated optoelectronic systems. We propose to utilize Rayleigh scattering of microcavities to lock the frequency of the pump laser to the resonant frequency of the laser microcavity with an all-optical method. While compressing the linewidth of the pump laser, it can greatly improve the long-term stability of the optically pumped microcavity laser. In the experiment, the linewidth of the semiconductor pump laser is compressed from the MHz level to the kHz level. The microcavity Brillouin laser achieves an ultra-narrow intrinsic linewidth of 100 Hz, with an ultra-low frequency noise of 35 Hz2/Hz. The constructed microlaser obtains a locking time up to 1 hour, which does not require any temperature control or vibration isolation of the laser system. This work is the first demonstration to achieve an optically pump-locked microcavity Brillouin laser, which provides a stable and reliable low-cost experimental platform for ultra-narrow linewidth lasers, precision laser sensors, microwave-photonic signal synthesizer, and optomechanical systems.

Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Narrow Linewidth Laser Diode Based on Self-injection locking with External Micro-ring Resonator

Abstract:A chip-scale frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) laser is implemented by coupling the distributed feedback (DFB) laser to an external high-Q micro-ring resonator based on Si3N4 waveguide. By self-injection locked, the laser realizes continuous tuning and frequency modulated without mode hopping. The lasering frequency is tracing the resonant frequency of the micro-ring which is tuned by thermo-optic (TO) effect. The laser shows a DC frequency tuning range of 9.1 GHz with a low noise of 3.7 kHz linewidth. Dynamic timefrequency domain analysis of the frequency modulation is also demonstrated, which has a potential application for light detection and ranging (LIDAR).

Abstract:Near infrared emission in silicon carbide is relevant for quantum technology specifically single photon emission and spin qubits for integrated quantum photonics, quantum communication and quantum sensing. In this paper we study the fluorescence emission of direct femtosecond laser written array of color centres in silicon carbide followed by thermal annealing. We show that in high energy laser writing pulses regions a near telecom O-band ensemble fluorescence emission is observed after thermal annealing and it is tentatively attributed to the nitrogen vacancy centre in silicon carbide. Further in the low energy laser irradiation spots after annealing, we fabricated few divacancy, PL5 and PL6 types and demonstrate their optical spin read-out, and coherent spin manipulation (Rabi and Ramsey oscillations and spin echo). We show that direct laser writing and thermal annealing can yield bright near telecom emission and preserve the spin coherence time of divacancy at room temperature.
