Abstract:A multi-gated photon counting optical time-domain reflectometry is demonstrated. In our experiment, a 70-m-long fiber link is tested which tolerates a Fresnel reflection with 35.3 dB greater than the back scattering of Rayleigh.

Abstract:We demonstrate a photon-counting optical time-domain reflectometry with 42.19 dB dynamic range using an ultra-low noise up-conversion single photon detector. By employing the long-wave pump technique and a volume Bragg grating, we achieve a noise equivalent power of -139.7 dBm/√Hz for our detector. We perform the OTDR experiments using a fiber of length approximate 217 km, and show that our system can identify defects along the entire fiber length in a measurement time of 13 minutes.

Abstract:Photon-counting optical time-domain reflectometry (PC-OTDR) based on single photon detection is an effective scheme to attain the high spatial resolution for optical fiber fault monitoring. Currently, due to the spatial resolution of PC-OTDR being proportional to the pulse width of a laser beam, short laser pulses are essential for a high spatial resolution. However, short laser pulses have a large bandwidth, which would be widened by the dispersion of fiber, causing inevitable deterioration in the spatial resolution, especially for long-haul fiber links. In this Letter, we propose a scheme of dispersion independent PC-OTDR based on an infinite backscatter technique. Our experimental results-with more than 45 km long fiber-show that the spatial resolution of the PC-OTDR system is independent with the total dispersion of the fiber under test. Our method provides an avenue for developing long-haul PC-OTDR with high performance.

Abstract:Optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) is a widely employed instrument for monitoring the property of fiber links. Traditional OTDR always suffers from the trade-off between its spatial resolution and the sensitivity of light detection. Therefore, it cannot be applied in critical applications, such as in aviation, where OTDR with a high spatial resolution of several centimeters is required. In this paper, we develop a cost-effective photon-counting OTDR based on our homemade gain-switching pulsed laser at 850 nm. Thanks to the short pulse width of the laser and the relatively small time jitter of the photon detector, our photon-counting OTDR achieves a spatial resolution of less than 9 an and satisfies the requirements for monitoring short fiber links in various types of airplanes. Finally, we realize a fully running system for monitoring an optical cable with 32 fiber channels on a plane. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A novel time-gated digital optical frequency domain reflectometry (TGD-OFDR) technique with high spatial resolution over long measurement range is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. To solve the contradictory between the tuning rate of lightwave frequency, which determines the spatial resolution, and the measurable distance range in traditional OFDR, our proposed scheme sweeps the frequency of probe beam only within a time window, while the local reference remains a frequency-stable continuous lightwave. The frequency-to-distance mapping is digitally realized with equivalent references in data domain. In demonstrational experiments, a 1.6-m spatial resolution is obtained over an entire 110-km long fiber link, proving that the phase noises of the laser source as well as environmental perturbations are well suppressed. Meanwhile, the dynamic range was 26 dB with an average of only 373 measurements. The proposed reflectometry provides a simple-structure and high-performance solution for the applications where both high spatial resolution and long distance range are required.

Abstract:This paper proposes a scheme of photon counting infinite backscatter optical time domain reflectometry (PC-IR-OTDR). In order to verify the feasibility of the scheme and analyze the factors influencing detection performance, a theoretical model of PC-OTDR system based on infinite backscatter is established and the main factors affecting the accuracy are analyzed. By our calculation, the laser pulse is with the pulse width of 1 μs and with peak power of 10 μW, and the width of time bin of time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) is 0.1 ns. Our scheme achieves a spatial resolution of less than 2 cm, and a dynamic range of around 25 dB above the noise floor. Our results show that our PC-IB-OTDR techniques provide the ability for lower costs of the PC-OTDR without compromising its performance.

Abstract:Brillouin distributed optical fiber sensor is one of the most promising techniques for practical applications, the key is how to detect the Brillouin scattering light, Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer is a good detecting method. Aimed at the scattering light signal's characters of Brillouin optical distributed sensor, a detecting scheme using optical coherent detection was developed. In detail, the scheme adopts electric-optical modulating to produce the frequency-adjustable reference light, which was optical heterodyne detected with the scattering lights. Using electronic processing, Brillouin scattering signal was gained based on Brillouin frequency shift. After accumulation and average, the distributed sensing signal was obtained. Using the optical coherent detection method, Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer has realized, and the distributed stress sensing experiment for 34km fiber was achieved.

Abstract:A direct-detection Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) is proposed and demonstrated by using an up-conversion single-photon detector and a fiber Fabry-Perot scanning interferometer (FFP-SI). Taking advantage of high signal-to-noise ratio of the detector and high spectrum resolution of the FFP-SI, the Brillouin spectrum along a polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) is recorded on a multiscaler with a small data size directly. In contrast with conventional BOTDR adopting coherent detection, photon-counting BOTDR is simpler in structure and easier in data processing. In the demonstration experiment, characteristic parameters of the Brillouin spectrum including its power, spectral width and frequency center are analyzed simultaneously along a 10 km PMF at different temperature and stain conditions.

Abstract:In classical optical time domain reflectometries (OTDRs), for sensing an 200-km-long fiber, the optical pulses launched are as wide as tens of microseconds to get enough signal-to-noise ratio, while it results in a two-point resolution of kilometers. To both reach long sensing distance and sub-kilometer resolution, we demonstrated a long-haul photon-counting OTDR using a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector. In a 40-minute-long measurement, we obtained a dynamic range of 46.9 dB, corresponding to a maximum sensing distance of 246.8 km, at a two-point resolution of 0.1 km. The time for measuring fiber after 100 km was reduced to one minute, while the fiber end at 217 km was still distinguished well from noise. After reducing the pulse width to 100 ns, the experimental two-point resolution was improved to 20 m while the maximum sensing distance was 209.47 km.

Abstract:A novel photon-counting optical time-domain reflectometry (nu-OTDR) based on superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. Benefiting from the low noise equivalent power (NEP), high repetition rate and low timing jitter of the SNSPD, our nu-OTDR system achieves a dynamic range of 22 dB after measurement time of 15 minutes. This obtainable dynamic range corresponds to a sensing length of 110 km. The system exhibits 6.0 cm spatial resolution at the end of 2 km and 1.1 m spatial resolution at the end of 26 km standard single-mode fiber. Considering the performance we obtained now and the increasing improvement of the fabrication technology, the SNSPD is promising in the field of fiber sensors.

Abstract:A novel fiber optical reflectometry is proposed for long distance measurements and sensing applications. The reflectrometric information is included in the phase difference of two interfering light beams reflected at the same scattering point on the fiber under test (FUT). The reflection position and local information can be determined by modulating the frequency difference and analyzing the reflecting signal in frequency domain. Theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration are presented. Two adjacent reflection points 50 km away from the reflectometry with a gap of 11 meters between each other is distinguished. It is estimated that the operating range could be over 500 km theoretically by employing a light source with 0.3 nm bandwidth. This novel reflectometry is applied as a fiber Bragg grating interrogation solution as an example.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-power pulse laser with extremely high pulse extinction ratio (ER). This laser module is designed for the experiment of 217 km long distance photon-counting optical time-domain reflectometry (nu-OTDR) using an up-conversion single photon detector. The maximum peak power of laser pulse is over 24dBm with an extremely high pulse extinction ratio of more than 100dB.

Abstract:We demonstrate an ultrahigh-resolution optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) system by using a mode-locked laser as the pulse source and a linear optical sampling technique to detect the reflected signals. Taking advantage of the ultrashort input pulse, the large detection-bandwidth, as well as the low timing jitter of linear optical sampling system, a sub-mm spatial resolution is achieved. As the pulse-width is broadened with the increase of distance due to chromatic dispersion and large bandwidth of the ultrashort pulse, by adopting digital chromatic dispersion compensation, we achieved a spatial resolution of 340 μm when measuring the reflector at 10 km. This technique helps OTDR find new foreground in long-range and ultrahigh-resolution distributed applications such as remote optical identification device detection for diagnosing passive optical network links, or precisely detecting fault positions in aircrafts.
