Abstract:Due to the many available cavity configurations, a generalized approach for identifying the optimal operating state of a Figure-9 mode-locked laser has proved a challenge. In this Letter, we probe the output pulsation states of an exemplar Figure-9 laser by meticulously scanning its parameter space. Regions corresponding to mode-locked operations are identified periodically in the map of the output states. We correlate these regions to a set of band-like cavity transmission functions that fundamentally allow ultra-short pulse formation. Interestingly, a clear correlation between the mode-locking pattern and the cavity configuration is observed. For example, with the decrease of the fiber loop symmetry in the cavity, half of the solutions in the mode-locking pattern are found to transit to forbidden states. Numerical calculations based on the Jones matrix are used to explain the experimental observations. In addition, the dynamic change of the map of output states is illustrated by using a setup with an automatic algorithm. Our results provide a visually-rich yet simple way for evaluating and optimizing a Figure-9 laser.

Abstract:We investigate the operational principle of mode-locking in monolithic semiconductor lasers incorporating coupled-resonator optical waveguides. The size of mode-locked lasers operating at tens of GHz repetition frequencies can be drastically reduced owing to the significantly decreased group velocity of light. The dynamics of such devices are analyzed numerically based on a coupled-oscillator model with the gain, loss, spontaneous emission, nearest-neighbor coupling and amplitude phase coupling (as described by the linewidth enhancement factor alpha) taken into account. It is demonstrated that active mode-locking can be achieved for moderate alpha parameter values. Simulations also indicate that large alpha parameters may destabilize the mode-locking behavior and result in irregular pulsations, which nevertheless can be effectively suppressed by incorporating detuning of individual cavity resonant frequencies in the device design.

Abstract:Period multiplication is a bifurcation phenomenon, which depicts a typical roadmap from periodic steady-state to chaos. There has been particular interest in studying period multiplication properties in mode-locked lasers, but the mechanism behind is still not well-studied. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a figure-of-9 fiber laser which can generate period-multiplied pulses with long-term stability. Further theoretical insight is obtained by numerical simulations, which clearly shows that the ratio between the distances of each bifurcation point is approaching the Feigenbaum constant. We believe that the laser design presented here could be a stable and reliable ultrafast optical platform to study bifurcation and chaos, which also has potential applications in optical frequency comb and all-optical modulation.

Abstract:Self-starting performance, which is typically related to the likelihood of a laser going promptly into mode-locking status as pump power ramps up, has always been an important factor while evaluating a Figure-9 laser. Here, quite strikingly, we find that the conventional way to assess self-starting characteristics may not fully reflect the laser’s starting capability. Specifically, we perform a “roaming mode”, where the mode-locking status is accessed by continuously rotating the waveplates after the pump power is fixed. Compared with conventional way, the roaming mode is seen to yield significantly more mode-locking states. In roaming mode, scanning from different directions produce qualitatively the same results. Our findings suggest there are indirect but accessible mode-locking states in the parameter space. The rotating action in “roaming mode” is believed to provide the necessary physical excitation to enable these states. Our findings provide an updated guideline for designing and optimizing Figure-9 lasers.

Abstract:We present a novel laser mode locking scheme and discuss its unusual properties and feasibility using a theoretical model. A large set of single-frequency continuous-wave lasers oscillate by amplification in spatially separated gain media. They are mutually phase-locked by nonlinear feedback from a common saturable absorber. As a result, ultra-short pulses are generated. The new scheme offers three significant benefits: the light that is amplified in each medium is continuous-wave, thereby avoiding issues related to group-velocity dispersion and nonlinear effects that can perturb the pulse shape. The set of frequencies on which the laser oscillates, and therefore the pulse repetition rate, is controlled by the geometry of resonator-internal optical elements, not by the cavity length. Finally, the bandwidth of the laser can be controlled by switching gain modules on and off. This scheme offers a route to mode-locked lasers with high average output power, repetition rates that can be scaled into the THz range, and a bandwidth that can be dynamically controlled. The approach is particularly suited for implementation using semiconductor diode laser arrays.

Abstract:Harnessing complexity in laser light The development of lasers and the quality of the output light has been crucially dependent on understanding and being able to control the process occurring within the laser-generating cavity. In a real laser cavity, there are both longitudinal and transverse modes; for the highest-quality lasers, reducing the effects of the latter has been standard practice. However, using a graded index fiber cavity, Wright et al. demonstrate that the longitudinal and transverse modes can be locked to provide an output of complex coherent light. Abstract:Lasers have enjoyed from their very beginning a preeminent spot in the physical sciences not only for their obvious and by now ubiquitous technological role, but also as a testing ground for new and far reaching ideas. Haken’s felicitous characterization of the laser as the trailblazer of Synergetics was advanced in recognition of the laser’s conceptual contributions to our present understanding of pattern formation and cooperative phenomena [1–3]. The early focus of theoretical laser studies was on symmetry breaking phenomena in the time domain, and the field of laser instabilities that grew in response to the pioneering works of the early 1960’s came to be identified closely with the study of output pulsations and dynamical chaos [4].

Abstract:Mode-locked lasers exhibit complex nonlinear dynamics. Precise observation of these dynamics will aid in the understanding of the underlying physics and provide new insights for laser design and applications. The starting dynamics, from initial noise fluctuations to the mode-locking regime, have previously been observed directly by time-stretched transform-based real-time spectroscopy. However, the regime transition dynamics, which are essential processes in mode-locked lasers, have not yet been resolved because regime transition process tracking is very challenging. Here we demonstrate the real-time observation of the regime transition dynamics enabled by our design of a real-time programmable mode-locked fiber laser, in which different operating regimes can be achieved and switched automatically. The regime transition dynamics among initial noise fluctuations, Q-switching, fundamental mode-locking and harmonic mode-locking regimes have been observed and thoroughly analyzed by both temporal and spectral means. These findings enrich our understanding of the complex dynamics inside mode-locked lasers.

Abstract:We proposed a difference equation model for fiber lasers mode-locked with nonlinear polarization evolution. It can be used to characterize intra-cavity nonlinear dynamics, such as steady one-pulse, period multiplication, multi-pulsing and chaos. The influence of adjusting wave-plate is also studied. By shifting linear phase bias, overdriving of saturable absorber is solved, and pulses of higher energy could be achieved. The modulation depth is found to affect the transition of intra-cavity dynamics.

Abstract:We propose a mathematical model for the phase-locking of a mode-locked laser. Based on the standard phase-locked loop (PLL) theory, a detailed mathematical model is developed. By applying the model to a system of phase-locking of a mode-locked laser, we analyze its three basic characteristics: the final steady error, the transient response, and the stability. An experimental phase-locking system is built with the standard PLL to measure the actual locking performance. The agreement between the experimental results and simulations has proved that our theoretical model for phase-locking of a mode-locked laser is correct.

Abstract:The critical behavior of passive mode locking has been demonstrated in a figure-eight fiber laser that performs rational harmonic mode locking (RHML). On both the repetition rate and the pulse amplitude distribution, the observed pulse trains near the threshold exhibit the same regulations as the rational harmonic mode-locked ones. The theory also shows that there should be a middle status of RHML before achieving normal mode locking. It is important to note that the results provide what we believe to be the first confirmed attempt to address a fundamental question: how does a laser become mode locking with an increase of pump power?

Abstract:We study the pulse characteristics in a laser mode-locked by active modulators with non-Hermitian driven signals. The signal assembles a parity-time (P T) symmetric and an anti-parity-time (A P T) symmetric function with fundamental and harmonic frequencies, respectively, inducing the complex coupling between modes in the frequency domain. A one-dimensional synthetic lattice is used to analyze the spectral mode coupling. By enlarging the weight and harmonic order of the A P T part of the signal, the optical spectrum can be adjusted from redshift to blueshift. Simultaneously, the pulse duration and spectral width are shortened and broadened, respectively. The work explores the role of non-Hermitian modulation in the mode-locked laser area.

Abstract:Mode-locked lasers play a crucial role in modern science and technology. They are essential to the study of ultrafast and nonlinear optics, and they have applications in metrology, telecommunications and imaging. Recently, there has been interest in studying topological phenomena in mode-locked lasers. From a fundamental perspective, such study promises to reveal nonlinear topological physics, and from a practical perspective it may lead to the development of topologically protected short-pulse sources. Despite this promising outlook, the interplay between topological photonic lattices and laser mode-locking has not been studied experimentally. In this work, we theoretically propose and experimentally realize a topological temporally mode-locked laser. We demonstrate a nonlinearity-driven non-Hermitian skin effect in a laser cavity and observe the robustness of the laser against disorder-induced localization. Our experiments demonstrate fundamental point-gap topological physics that was previously inaccessible to photonics experiments, and they suggest potential applications of our mode-locked laser to sensing, optical computing and robust topological frequency combs. The experimental architecture employed in this work also provides a template for studying topology in other mode-locked photonic sources, including dissipative cavity solitons and synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillators.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed growing research interest in dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber lasers for their pivotal role in diverse applications and the exploration of nonlinear dynamics. Despite notable progress in their development, achieving reliable mode-locked dual-wavelength operation typically necessitates intricate manual adjustments of the cavity's polarization components. In this article, we present the realization of automatic mode-locking in a dual-wavelength soliton fiber laser. To provide guidance for the algorithm design, we systematically investigated the impact of polarization configurations and initial states on the laser's operation through numerical simulations and linear scan experiments. The results indicate that operational regimes can be finely adjusted around the wave plate position supporting the mode-locked dual-wavelength solution. Furthermore, the laser exhibits multiple stable states at the mode-locked dual-wavelength point, with critical dependence on the initial conditions. Accordingly, we developed a two-stage genetic algorithm that was demonstrated to be effective for realizing automatic dual-wavelength mode-locking. To further improve the performance of the algorithm, a feedforward neural network was trained and integrated into the algorithm, enabling accurate identification of the dual-wavelength states. This study provides valuable insights into understanding how polarization configurations and initial conditions impact the operational regimes of dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber lasers. The algorithm developed can be extended to optimize other systems with multiple stable states supported at the same parameter point.

Abstract:Nonlinear polarization evolution-based passively mode-locked fiber lasers with ultrafast and high peak power pulses are a powerful tool for engineering applications and scientific research. However, their sensitivity to polarization limits their widespread application. To address this, automatic mode-locking immune to environmental disturbances is gaining attention. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the first intelligent programmable mode-locked fiber laser enabled by our proposed human-like algorithm, combining the human approach with machine speed, computing capability, and precision. The laser is capable of automatically locking onto multiple operation regimes, such as fundamental mode-locking, harmonic mode-locking, Q -switching, and even Q -switched mode-locking without physically altering its structure. The shortest initial mode-locking time and recovery time from detachment are only 0.22 s and 14.8 ms, respectively, which are the record values to date. We believe this intelligent laser with superior performance can find practical applications in engineering and provide infinite possibilities for scientific research. © 2019 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement

Abstract:Mode-locked fiber lasers based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) have been widely applied due to the simple setup, high performance and rich nonlinear dynamics. However, temperature, vibration, and stress can easily disrupt the optimized mode-locked state. To address this problem, automatic mode-locked lasers using different self-tuning algorithms are proposed in recent years. However, it is relatively difficult to verify and optimize the performance of self-tuning algorithm since the use of actual laser platforms, which hinders the development of intelligent mode-locked fiber laser. In this paper, we demonstrate a simulation platform for NPR mode-locked fiber lasers by using coupled Ginzburg-Landau equation and Jones matrix, which makes the optimization of intelligent self-tuning algorithm easier. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, genetic algorithm and human-like algorithm are implemented to prove the ability of comparing different self-tuning algorithms.

Abstract:The time-domain ABCD matrix formalism is based on the propagation of a Gaussian pulse which is characterized by the pulsewidth and chirp. In this paper, we will perfect this method and derive time-domain ABCD matrices for more optical devices. Especially, we extend this perfected theory to analyze the principle of passive mode-locking by reasonable approximation though, as we know, the output pulse generated from passive mode-locking fiber laser is of sech-shape. It is attractive because it can present a fairly apparent view to understand the mechanism of fiber lasers as well as analytic results to understand the pulse characteristics.

Abstract:We explored experimentally the mode-locking (ML) evolution mechanism of a dual-ring fiber laser. Increase of the total pump power up to 860 mW allowed the observation of the state changes from single-ring ML, dual-ring ML, to dual-ring self-starting ML. Moreover, a group of wave plates and a fixed polarization beam splitter were applied in each subring as precise attenuators. Rotation of each wave plate for an entire turn allowed the investigation of the ML evolution of the two subrings based on the intracavity power variation in each subring. The variation periodicity of the output power was analyzed for each subring and was found to be consistent with the theoretical results. Furthermore, the ML detachment threshold in each subring was estimated to explain the ML evolution. Our study provides a deeper understanding of the ML evolution in dual-ring fiber lasers and can aid their future optimal design for dual comb applications.
