Abstract:This article studies how signs, media, and the hyperreality of politics that the signs and media create and nurture have become deeply involved in recent political conflicts in the Arab world, constituting the phenomena that I understand as the semiotization and mediatization of political conflicts. Synthesizing theories of sociolinguistics and media studies, I study the political graffiti in Egyptian protests, the online propaganda of the self-proclaimed “Islamic State in Iraq and Syria” (ISIS), and the information war preceding and prefiguring the Qatar blockade to establish and describe the phenomena and strategies of semiotization and mediatization in different types of political conflicts. I then propose rational and emotional cocooning as the underlying mechanism of the semiotization and mediatization of political conflicts, single out the masses-to-be-mobilized and globality as the drivers of these processes in the three political conflicts in the Arab world, discuss the tug of war between conflicting parties engaging in the processes, and ponder the resulting influence of the hyperreal on real politics.
