Abstract:Exploring high conductive materials is still a challenge for high performance intermediate-temperature fuel cells. In this study, two-dimensional LiAl0.5Co0.5O2 (LACO) nanosheets coated by a compatible amorphous LiAlO2 (LAO) layer are evaluated as proton/Li+ conductor electrolyte. The fuel cell in which the LAO-LACO is used as electrolyte could deliver the maximum power output of 1120 mW cm−2 at 550 °C. The LAO coating enhances not only the ionic conductivity by modifying the space-charge regions, but also improves the LACO's chemical stability and device performance. Kelvin probe force microscopy further detected a local electric field (LEF) built in the LAO-LACO coating confines protons at the interface to transport fast. Such heterostructure with the LEF accelerating mechanism presents a novel approach for developing high-performance intermediate-temperature fuel cells.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on two aspects: 1. **Improving the performance of intermediate - temperature fuel cells**: By developing a new electrolyte material - LiAl_0.5Co_0.5O_2 (LACO) nanosheets and coating a compatible amorphous LiAlO_2 (LAO) layer on its surface to serve as a proton/Li⁺ - conducting electrolyte, the maximum power output of the fuel cell under intermediate - temperature conditions is increased. The experimental results show that the fuel cell using LAO - LACO as the electrolyte can reach a maximum power density of 1120 mW cm⁻² at 550 °C, which is much higher than the performance of the uncoated LACO material. 2. **Improving the chemical stability of the LACO electrolyte and the operating life of the device**: It has been found that the LAO coating not only improves the ionic conductivity of LACO, but also enhances the chemical stability of LACO by reducing side reactions and supporting the host material to maintain its layered structure. This enables the LAO - LACO - based fuel cell to operate stably at 550 °C for more than 16 hours, significantly extending the service life of the device and avoiding the problem of LACO rapidly decomposing into γ - LiAlO_2 and Co_3O_4 during fuel cell operation. Through the above improvements, the paper proposes an effective strategy, that is, by forming a heterogeneous - structure electrolyte (LAO - LACO), not only the performance of the intermediate - temperature fuel cell is significantly improved, but also the chemical stability of the electrolyte and the operating life of the device are greatly enhanced. These results are of great significance for promoting the development of high - performance intermediate - temperature fuel cells.
