Abstract:The first neutral coordination complex of adenosine-5′-diphosphate (ADP) with transition metal Cu(II) ion, [Cu(phen)(H2ADP)(NO3)]·H2O (ADP–Cu) (ADP=adenosine-5′-diphosphate, phen=1, 10-phenanthroline monohydrate) has been synthesized and investigated by X-ray single-crystal diffraction method. Based on its crystal structure and supramolecular assembly analysis, the molecular and supramolecular chirality of ADP–Cu was studied comprehensively by liquid- and solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. It is the first example of the study about the chirality and supramolecular chirality for polyphosphate nucleotide coordination complex.

Abstract:Two types of Cu(ii)-AMP-4,4 '-bipy coordination polymers, {[Cu(AMP)(4,4 '-bipy)(H2O)(3)]center dot 5H(2)O}n (1) and {[Cu-2(HAMP)(2)(4,4 '-bipy)(2)(H2O)(4)]center dot 2NO(3)center dot 11H(2)O}n (2) (Na(2)AMP = adenosine 5 '-monophosphate disodium salt), were synthesised through pH control. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis revealed that 1 and 2 are one-dimensional (1D) coordinating coordination polymers. The nucleotide in 1 was not protonated whereas that in 2 was protonated. With the protonated NO3- in 2 entering the crystal lattice, it plays a role in balancing the charge. The chirality was studied using solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy based on the analysis of crystal structures.

Abstract:Lambda-and Delta-enantiomers of cis-[CoBr(NH(3))(en)(2)]Br(2) were obtained by absolute asymmetric synthesis. The interactions between the achiral 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (TPPS) and two chiral cationic Co(III) complexes were studied by UV-vis spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD), fluorescence spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that the cationic Co( III) complexes can induce the formation of chiral porphyrin J-aggregates, that the metal-centered chirality can be transferred to the J-aggregates, and that the chirality was able to be memorized and amplified in the porphyrin J-aggregates. Therefore, this should be a good chiral model for understanding similar processes in physical and biological systems.

Abstract:As a privileged chiral scaffold, cinchona alkaloid and its derivatives have reached remarkable success in catalytic asymmetric organic synthesis. In addition to the wide applications of point chirality control, Smith and co-workers recently discovered a quinidine-derived ammonium cation-catalyzed O-alkylation of tetralones, providing an effective approach for the synthesis of axially chiral biaryls. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we studied the reaction mechanism and origins of enantioselectivity of this novel transformation. A stepwise strategy is adopted to ensure efficient and thorough exploration of the massive conformational space of transition state. Our computations suggested that enolate oxygen forms two hydrogen bonds with the chiral ammonium catalyst, and the non-covalent interactions between the cationic benzylic fragment and the methoxy group of enolate plays a critical role in determining the enantioselectivity.

Abstract:1D and 2D homochiral nucleotides coordination polymers UMP/CMP-4,4'-bipy-M(II) (M = Co, Cu, Ni) 1-5 were designed, synthesized and analyzed by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. Axial chirality of 4,4'-bipy is captured and extended to a 1D infinite chain due to metal coordination and cooperation of a chiral nucleotide inducer, which is defined as Extended Axial Chirality (EAC) for the first time. Different chiral sources coexist in these nucleotide coordination polymers and can be observed clearly in solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, including the inherent chirality of ligands, extended axial chirality and supramolecular helical chirality. Furthermore, 2D complexes of CMP-bipy-Cu (3) present dominant Cu(II)center dot center dot center dot Cu(II) magnetic exchange through (-O-P-O-) and bipy bridge, exhibiting ferromagnetic interactions.

Abstract:Supramolecular assembly of well-defined discrete architectures has been of great interest due to the tunable properties of these structures in functional materials and bio-mimicking. While metal-coordination-driven assembly has been extensively studied, anion-coordination-driven assembly (ACDA) is just emerging for constructing complex supramolecular structures. Herein two A(2n)L(2n) (A = anion, L = ligand; n = 1 or 2) 'aniono'-supramolecular assemblies, i.e. double helicates and the first anion grid, have been constructed based on the coordination between phosphate (PO43-) anion and a bis-tris(urea) ligand. Moreover, the aniono-grid and double helicate motifs can be readily interconverted under ambient conditions by simply changing the counter-cation. These results redefine the power and scope of ACDA, which may represent a new approach in the assembly of well-defined architectures in parallel with the metal coordination-driven assembly of metallo-supramolecules.

Abstract:Nucleotides are essential components of DNA and RNA, and their functions depend mainly on the participation of metal ions. Thus, research into nucleotide-metal coordination complexes, including the affinities of different coordination donors for metal ions, molecular and crystal structures, supramolecular assembly, and functional nanoparticles, will contribute to the interdisciplinary field of chemistry,biology, and materials. Numerous achievements have been reported in this area but few comprehensive reviews have considered nucleotide-metal complexes from the viewpoints of crystallography and supramolecular chemistry, or aspects of their chirality and chirality delivery. In this review, we describe the coordination ability of nucleotide ligands, the structures and properties of nucleotide-metal coordination complexes, and supramolecular assemblies. We review mononuclear complexes, multinuclear complexes, 1D and 2D coordination polymers, and 3D supramolecular assemblies in terms of their structures, mainly based on their X-ray single crystal diffraction data. In particular, we highlight the chirality of nucleotide-metal complex, including their molecular chirality, supramolecular helical chirality, and extended axial chirality. Furthermore, we summarize the functional properties of nucleotide-metal nano-materials, such as their luminescence, magnetism, and adaptive inclusion properties. Chirality Transfer in Magnetic Coordination Complexes Monitored by Vibrational and Electronic Circular Dichroism

Abstract:Magnetic coordination complexes based on Schiff bases are promising new molecular materials for electronics. Two -oxo Fe-III dimeric complexes of enantiomers of Schiff base ligands (N,N-(1R,2R)-1,2-diphenylethylenebis(salicylideneimine) (H(2)salphen-R, 1a) and N,N-(1S,2S)-1,2-diphenylethylenebis(salicylideneimine) (H(2)salphen-S, 1b)) were synthesized; further reaction with 4-salicylideneamino-1,2,4-triazole (Hsaltrz) led to enantiomers of two one-dimensional (1D) Fe-III coordination complexes. The structures of these complexes were determined by X-ray diffraction. Magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed that -oxo dimeric complexes displayed strong antiferromagnetic coupling, whereas the 1D complexes exhibited paramagnetic behavior. The chirality of the Schiff bases transferred to macromolecular chirality of the complexes, which could be monitored by both vibrational and electronic circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopic methods. The macroscopic handedness was manifested in CD signals attributed to exciton coupling between the ligands. Thus, the chiral spectroscopies were useful to probe the chirality of the complexes, their structure, and the polymerization degree.
Structural Characterization of the Metalized Radical Cations of Adenosine ([Ade+Li-H]•+ and [Ade+Na-H]•+) by Infrared Multiphoton Dissociation Spectroscopy and Theoretical Studies

Abstract:Nucleoside radicals are key intermediates in the process of DNA damage, and alkali metal ions are a common group of ions in living organisms. However, so far, there has been a significant lack of research on the structural effects of alkali metal ions on nucleoside free radicals. In this study, we report a new method for generating metalized nucleoside radical cations in the gas phase. The radical cations [Ade+M-H]•+ (M = Li, Na) are generated by the 280 nm ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) of the precursor ions of lithiated and sodiated ions of 2-iodoadenine in a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT ICR) cell. Further infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) spectra of both radical cations were recorded in the region of 2750–3750 cm−1. By combining these results with theoretical calculations, the most stable isomers of both radicals can be identified, which share the common characteristics of triple coordination patterns of the metal ions. For both radical species, the lowest-energy isomers undergo hydrogen transfer. Although the sugar ring in the most stable isomer of [Ade+Li-H]•+ is in a (South, syn) conformation similar to that of [Ado+Na]+, [Ade+Na-H]•+ is distinguished by the unexpected opening of the sugar ring. Their theoretical spectra are in good agreement with experimental spectra. However, due to the flexibility of the structures and the complexity of their potential energy surfaces, the hydrogen transfer pathways still need to be further studied. Considering that the free radicals formed directly after C-I cleavage have some similar spectral characteristics, the existence of these corresponding isomers cannot be ruled out. The findings imply that the structures of nucleoside radicals may be significantly influenced by the attached alkali metal ions. More detailed experiments and theoretical calculations are still crucial.

Abstract:Four new polymers, namely [Ni(-tsgluO)(2,4′-bipy)2(H2O)2]n·5nH2O (1), [Co(-tsgluO)(2,4′-bipy)2(H2O)2]n·5nH2O (2), [Ni(-tsgluO)(4,4′-bipy)]n·0.5nH2O (3), and [Co(-tsgluO)(4,4′-bipy)]n·0.5nH2O (4), where tsgluO2−=(+)-N-p-tolylsulfonyl-l-glutamate dianion, 2,4′-bipy=2,4′-bipyridine, and 4,4′-bipy=4,4'-bipyridine, have been prepared and structurally characterized. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and mononuclear, and crystallize in the acentric monoclinic space group Cc, forming 1D chain structures. Compound 3 is also mononuclear, but crystallizes in the chiral space group P21, forming a homochiral 2D architecture. In contrast to the other complexes, compound 4 crystallizes in the space group P−1 and is composed of binuclear [Co2O6N2]n4− units, which give rise to a 2D bilayer framework. Moreover, compounds 1, 2, and 4 self-assemble to form 3D supramolecular structures through π–π stacking and hydrogen-bonding interactions, while compound 3 is further hydrogen-bonded to form 3D frameworks. We have demonstrated the influence of the central metal and bipyridine ligands on the framework chirality of the coordination complexes.
Chirality Sensing of Amino Acid Esters by S-2-Methylbutanamido-Substituted m-Phthalic Diamide-Linked Zinc Bisporphyrinate

Abstract:To understand the role of an additional coordination site in the linker in chirality sensing, we designed and synthesized an S-2-methylbutanamido-substituted m-phthalic diamide-linked zinc bisporphyrinate, [Zn2(S-MAABis)] and investigated its ability to sense the chirality of amino acid esters. The 1H NMR spectra and the crystal structure showed that the amido oxygen adjacent to the chiral carbon was coordinated with zinc. NMR and UV-vis titration showed that the binding of [Zn2(S-MAABis)] to amino acid esters occurred via two equilibria, forming 1:1 and 1:2 host-guest complexes. The CD spectra suggested that [Zn2(S-MAABis)] can effectively recognize the absolute configuration of amino acid esters. The sign of the CD spectra remained unchanged during the titration, indicating that the corresponding 1:1 and 1:2 host-guest complexes had the same chirality. This is different from previously studied amino-substituted m-phthalic diamide-linked zinc bisporphyrinate [Zn2(AmBis)], which showed chirality inversion during titration. Theoretical calculations indicated that the additional coordination sites (amido or amino) in the 1:1 host-guest complexes played different roles, leading to differences in chirality. Our studies suggest that the introduction of a coordination site can influence the chirality transfer process, but the results of chirality transfers are dependent on the specific binding modes.
Metallophilic Interactions Drive Supramolecular Chirality Evolution and Amplify Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Abstract:Metallophilic interactions, which are ubiquitous among d10 metal complexes with linear coordination geometries, can direct one-dimensional assembly. However, the ability of these interactions to manipulate chirality at the hierarchical level largely remains unknown. In this work, we unveiled the role of Au···Cu metallophilic interactions in directing the chirality of multicomponent assemblies. N-heterocyclic carbene-Au(I) complexes bearing amino acid residues formed chiral co-assemblies with [CuI2]- anions via Au···Cu interactions. These metallophilic interactions changed the molecular packing modes of the co-assembled nanoarchitectures from lamellar to columnar chiral packing. This transformation initiated the emergence, inversion, and evolution of supramolecular chirality, thereby affording helical superstructures, depending on the geometry of building units. In addition, the Au···Cu interactions altered the luminescence properties and induced the emergence and amplification of circularly polarized luminescence. This work, for the first time, revealed the role of Au···Cu metallophilic interactions in modulating supramolecular chirality, paving the way for the construction of functional chiroptical materials based on d10 metal complexes.
Cytosine-Cytosine Base-Pair Mismatch and Chirality in Nucleotide Supramolecular Coordination Complexes.

Abstract:The base-pair sequences are the foundation for the biological processes of DNA or RNA, and base-pair mismatch is very important to reveal genetic diseases and DNA rearrangements. However, the lack of well-defined structural information about base-pair mismatch is obstructing the investigation of this issue. The challenge is to crystallize the materials containing the base-pair mismatch. Engineering the small-molecule mimics or model is an effective strategy to solve this issue. Here, six cytidine-5'-monophosphate (CMP) and 2'-deoxycytidine-5'-monophosphate (dCMP) coordination polymers were reported containing cytosine-cytosine base-pair mismatch (i-motif), and their single-crystal structures and chiralities were studied. The precise control over the formation of the i-motif was demonstrated, in which the regulating of supramolecular interactions was achieved based on molecular design. In addition, the chiralities of these coordination polymers were investigated according to their crystal structures and solution- and solid-state circular dichroism spectroscopy.

Abstract:The effect of chiral metal complexes ([Co(en)(3)]I(3)·H(2)O, cis-[CoBr(NH(3))(en)(2)]Br(2), K[Co(edta)]·2H(2)O and [Ru(phen)(3)](PF(6))(2)) on the polymer-bound J-aggregates in aqueous mixtures of pesudoisocyanine (PIC) iodine and poly(acrylic acid, sodium)(PAAS) have been studied by UV-vis absorption, circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectra. At low concentration, the PIC monomers could self-assemble to form supermolecules by binding to each of the COO(-) groups on the polymer chains through electrostatic interactions. After the addition of chiral metal complexes to the formed PIC-PAAS J-aggregates, we found that only the chiral multiple π-conjugated phenanthroline metal complexes could transfer their metal-centered chiral information to the formed J-aggregates. The chiral J-aggregates showed a characteristic induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the visible region of J-band chromophore, and the ICD signals depend on the absolute configuration, concentration of the chiral multiple π-conjugated metal complexes, as well as temperature. More interestingly, the supramolecular chirality of the polymer supported PIC J-aggregates could be memorized even after the addition of an excess opposite chiral complex enantiomers. This is in sharp contrast to the behavior in the high concentrated NaCl induced PIC-J aggregates, in which the optical rotation of a mixture of two enantiomers varies linearly with their ratio.

Abstract:Abstract: Chirality is a widespread structural characteristic found in nature and plays a vital role in the structure and functioning of almost all biological systems. Nevertheless, the translation of chirality into synthetic systems is highly intricate yet captivating, as it not only applies fundamental understanding but also has the potential to tackle significant difficulties in biochemistry and medicine. Structurally, the process of coordination- driven self-assembly involves the organization of basic molecular components into well-defined porous homochiral metal-organic cages (MOCs). This allows for a systematic investigation of the enantioselective processes occurring within the nanocavities, which have limited space and specific chiral microenvironments. This article aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the recent advancements in supramolecular chirality generated in the fascinating class of porous MOCs. It will cover the synthesis and characterization of these materials, as well as the implications of their stereochemical information in terms of chiral recognition and enantio- separation. Subsequently, a subjective viewpoint will be presented regarding the potential, possibilities, and significant challenges in the future advancement of this domain, aiming to expand the progress in creating novel chiral functional materials in the realm of chemistry and beyond.
