Abstract:Epimers of the (1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diyl)bis(ethyl(phenyl)phosphine oxide) (Et-Ph-BPPhen) ligand with two chiral centers (R,R/S,S and R,S) were synthesized. The configurational effects on the coordination ability and mechanism between these epimeric ligands and uranyl ions were thoroughly investigated. This work is helpful to reveal the effects of different conformations of epimeric ligands on their coordination properties.

Abstract:The first neutral coordination complex of adenosine-5′-diphosphate (ADP) with transition metal Cu(II) ion, [Cu(phen)(H2ADP)(NO3)]·H2O (ADP–Cu) (ADP=adenosine-5′-diphosphate, phen=1, 10-phenanthroline monohydrate) has been synthesized and investigated by X-ray single-crystal diffraction method. Based on its crystal structure and supramolecular assembly analysis, the molecular and supramolecular chirality of ADP–Cu was studied comprehensively by liquid- and solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. It is the first example of the study about the chirality and supramolecular chirality for polyphosphate nucleotide coordination complex.

Abstract:Understanding of the nature and extent of chemical bonding in uranyl coordination complexes is crucial for the design of new ligands for nuclear waste separation, uranium extraction from seawater, and other applications. We report here the synthesis, infrared spectroscopic characterization, and quantum chemical studies of a molecular uranyl-di-15-crown-5 complex. The structure and bonding of this unique complex featuring a distinctive 6-fold coplanar coordination staggered sandwich structure and an unusual non-perpendicular orientation of the uranyl moiety are evaluated using density functional theory and chemical bonding analyses. The results provide fundamental understanding of the coordination interaction of uranyl with oxygen-donor ligands.

Abstract:1D and 2D homochiral nucleotides coordination polymers UMP/CMP-4,4'-bipy-M(II) (M = Co, Cu, Ni) 1-5 were designed, synthesized and analyzed by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. Axial chirality of 4,4'-bipy is captured and extended to a 1D infinite chain due to metal coordination and cooperation of a chiral nucleotide inducer, which is defined as Extended Axial Chirality (EAC) for the first time. Different chiral sources coexist in these nucleotide coordination polymers and can be observed clearly in solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, including the inherent chirality of ligands, extended axial chirality and supramolecular helical chirality. Furthermore, 2D complexes of CMP-bipy-Cu (3) present dominant Cu(II)center dot center dot center dot Cu(II) magnetic exchange through (-O-P-O-) and bipy bridge, exhibiting ferromagnetic interactions.
Structural Diversity of Bipyridinium-Based Uranyl Coordination Polymers: Synthesis, Characterization, and Ion-Exchange Application

Abstract:As well-known functional groups with excellent electro/photochromic and ion-exchange properties, bipyridinium motifs have been used in functionalized metal-organic coordination polymers, but they are still rarely applied to construct actinide coordination polymers. In this work, we utilized a bipyridinium-based carboxylic acid, 1,1'-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium bis(chloride) ([H2bcbp]Cl2), as the organic ligand to assemble with uranyl cations. By the introduction of different kinds of auxiliary ligands and adjustment of the pH, five novel uranyl coordination compounds, 1-5, have been synthesized through hydrothermal reactions. Starting from uranyl ions and terephthalic acid (H2TP) and H2bcbp ligands, [(UO2)2(bcbp)(TP)2]·3H2O (1) has a wave-shaped two-dimensional (2D) structure consisting of dinuclear units connected by terephthalate linkers and further supported by the longer H2bcbp ligands. [(UO2)2(bcbp)(PA)2]·4H2O (2) has a zigzag chain of dimeric uranium units, and [(UO2)2(bcbp)(bpdc)2]·5H2O (3) forms a one-dimensional ribbonlike structure. The 2D structures of [(UO2)(bcbp)(OH)(H2O)]·Cl (4) and [(UO2)(bcbp)Cl]·Cl (5) are similar, both of which are constructed from dinuclear uranyl units and bcbp2- ligands. Furthermore, the performance for perrhenate removal of compound 4 with a cationic framework is assessed, and we found that compound 4 can efficiently remove ReO4- from an aqueous solution in a wide range of pH values. This work extends the library of viologen derivative-based uranyl coordination polymers, provides to some extent broader insights into actinide coordination chemistry of functionalized ligands, and may facilitate the ion-exchange applications of related coordination polymers.

Abstract:In this work, we present the syntheses of four novel uranyl complexes of tri(biphenyl)amine tricarboxylate (L1) or triphenylamine tricarboxylate (L2), 1-4, with layered networks or three-dimensional (3D) frameworks through solvothermal/hydrothermal reactions. Using dimethylformamide (DMF) as the solvent, compound 1 ([NH2(CH3)(2) ][UO2(L1)]center dot 3DMF) and 3 ([NH2(CH3)(2)] [UO2 (L2)]center dot DMF) give nearly identical (6,3)-connected large-pore layered networks in spite of the slight difference in packing mode ("ABC-ABC" pattern in 1 vs "AB-AB" pattern in 3). When mixed DMF/water solvents were used, compound 2 ([NH2(CH3)(2)](2) [UO2 (L1)](2) (NO3)(2)center dot H2O) with a two-dimensional (2D) + 2D -+ three-dimensional (3D) polycatenasted framework and compound 4([NH2(CH3)(2)] [UO2(L2)]center dot 2H(2)O) with a (10,3)-connected 2-fold interpenetrating 3D framework were achieved from H(3)L1 and H(3)L2, respectively, which might be attributed to the induction of water molecules with strong hydrogen-bonding capacity. Most remarkably, the difference between a 2D + 2D -> 3D polycatenated framework and (10,3)-connected 2-fold interpenetrating 3D framework demonstrates the vital role of conformation flexibility of ligand on the final structure of uranyl compounds, which should be related to the increased amount of phenyl groups of the L1 ligand endowing its molecular skeleton more freedom and adjusting molecular conformation more easily. Their physicochemical properties were also studied by powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, IR spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy.

Abstract:The base-pair sequences are the foundation for the biological processes of DNA or RNA, and base-pair mismatch is very important to reveal genetic diseases and DNA rearrangements. However, the lack of well-defined structural information about base-pair mismatch is obstructing the investigation of this issue. The challenge is to crystallize the materials containing the base-pair mismatch. Engineering the small-molecule mimics or model is an effective strategy to solve this issue. Here, six cytidine-5'-monophosphate (CMP) and 2'-deoxycytidine-5'-monophosphate (dCMP) coordination polymers were reported containing cytosine-cytosine base-pair mismatch (i-motif), and their single-crystal structures and chiralities were studied. The precise control over the formation of the i-motif was demonstrated, in which the regulating of supramolecular interactions was achieved based on molecular design. In addition, the chiralities of these coordination polymers were investigated according to their crystal structures and solution- and solid-state circular dichroism spectroscopy.

Reticular Chemistry of Uranyl Phosphonates: Sterically Hindered Phosphonate Ligand Method Is Significant for Constructing Zero-Dimensional Secondary Building Units.

Abstract:Designability is an attractive feature for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and essential for reticular chemistry, and many ideas are significantly useful in the carboxylate system. Bi-, tri-, and tetra-topic phosphonate ligands are used to achieve framework structures. However, an efficient method for designing phosphonate MOFs is still on the way, especially for uranyl phosphonates, owing to the complicated coordination modes of the phosphonate group. Uranyl phosphonates prefer layer or pillar-layered structures as the topology extension for uranyl units occurs in the plane perpendicular to the linear uranium-oxo bonds and phosphonate ligands favor the formation of compact structures. Therefore, an approach that can construct three-dimensional (3D) uranyl phosphonate MOFs is desired. In this paper, a sterically hindered phosphonate ligand method (SHPL) is described and is successfully used to achieve 3D framework structures of uranyl phosphonates. Four MOF compounds ([AMIM](2)(UO2)(TppmH(4)).H2O (UPF-101), [BMMIM](2)(UO2)(3)(TppmH(4))(2).H2O (UPF-102), [Py14](2)(UO2)(3)(TppmH(4))(2).3 H2O (UPF-103), and [BMIM](UO2)(3)(TppmH(3))F-2.2 H2O (UPF-104); [AMIM]=1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium, [BMMIM]=1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium, [Py14]=N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium, and [BMIM]=1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) are obtained by ionothermal synthesis, with zero-dimensional nodes of uranyl phosphonates linked by steric tetra-topic ligands, namely tetrakis[4-(dihyroxyphosphoryl)phenyl]methane (TppmH(8)), to give 3D framework structures. Characterization by PXRD, UV/Vis, IR, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetry (TG) were also performed.
Proximity Effect in Uranyl Coordination of the Cucurbit[6]uril-Bipyridinium Pseudorotaxane Ligand for Promoting Host–Guest Synergistic Chelating

Abstract:In the present work, we proposed regulating uranyl coordination behavior of cucurbituril-bipyridinium pseudorotaxane ligand by utilizing meta-functionalized bipyridinium dicarboxylate guest. A tailored pseudorotaxane precursor involving 1,1′-(hexane-1,6-diyl)bis(3-cyanopyridin-1-ium) bromide (C6BPCN3) and cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]) has designed and synthesized. Through in situ hydrolysis of the pseudorotaxane ligands and their coordination assembly with uranyl cations, seven new uranyl-rotaxane coordination polymers URCP1–URCP7 have been obtained under hydrothermal conditions in the presence of different anions. It is demonstrated that the variation of carboxylate groups from para- to meta-position greatly affected the coordination behaviors of the meta-functionalized pseudorotaxane linkers, which are enriched from simple guest-only binding to host–guest simultaneous coordination and synergistic chelating. This effective regulation on uranyl coordination of supramolecular pseudorotaxane can be attributed to the proximity effect, which refers to the meta-position carboxyl group being spatially closer to the portal carbonyl group of CB[6]. Moreover, by combining other regulation methods such as introducing competing counterions and modulating solution acidity, the nuclearity of the uranyl center and the coordination patterns of the pseudorotaxane ligand can be diversely tuned, which subsequently exert great influence on the final dimensionality of resultant uranyl compounds. Abstract:The mixed-ligand strategy is one of the important methods for preparing new materials and regulating the properties of materials. In this work, by introducing different auxiliary ligands (ALs), we have obtained a series of mixed-ligand uranyl complexes (1–6) from a flexible biphenyltetracarboxylic acid (H4bptc) with an adjustable orthogonal conformation and studied the influence of different organic base molecules on the coordination and assembly of H4bptc with a uranyl cation. It is found that the coordinated ALs, including 4,4′-bipyridine-1,1′-dioxide and 1,10-phenanthroline, partially occupy the coordination sites of the uranyl center and directly affect the molecular conformations and uranyl coordination of flexible bptc linkers. On the other hand, noncoordinated ALs such as protonated 4,4′-bipyridine ([H2(4,4′-bpy)]2+) or dimethylammonium, which work as counterions in the form of encapsulated guests or hydrogen-bonded templates, also have a nonnegligible impact on the conformation and coordination of bptc linkers. Most interestingly, the AL-mediated evolution of uranyl coordination by the bptc linker and coordination geometry of the uranyl center is clearly observed, which suggests the adaptability of flexible bptc linkers to take suitable molecular configurations and uranyl coordination modes so as to adapt to the external regulator agents and varying environment. Abstract:A novel Cu (II)-MOF, namely [Cu(Hhmt)]n (1) was obtained by employing copper nitrate and a triazole ligand (H3hmt) under hydrothermal conditions, where H3hmt=3,5-bis (hydroxymethyl)-1,2,4-triazole. Single crystal X-ray analysis reveals that complex 1 crystallizes in the chiral tetragonal space group P43212 with a right-handed 43 and a left-handed 21 helical chains which lead to the formation of a 3D supramolecular structure. The phrase purity, IR spectra, thermal stabilities of 1 were also investigated. The nature of antiferromagnetic exchange of complex 1 is discussed based on the structure.
A Homochiral Cu(I) Coordination Polymer: Crystal Structure, Luminescent, Shg Response and Dielectric Property

Abstract:Under hydrothermal conditions, homochiral ligand (4aR,8aR)-2,3-di(thiophen-2-yl)-decahydroquinoxaline (DTDCQ) reacted with CuBr to give 1D helical chain complexes [(DTHHQ)CuBr](n) (1). Single crystal X-ray determination shows that compound 1 crystallize in chiral space groups P2(1)2(1)2(1) and the experimental result indicated that 1 has SHG (second harmonic generation) active with approximate responses 0.4 times that of urea, Fluorescent analysis showed it exhibits one intense emission band at 377 nm when the exciting radiation was set at 340 nm. Dielectric constant of compound 1 were measured at different frequencies at room temperature. CCDC: 745354.

Abstract:The controllable synthesis of non-classical nucleobase pairs that can mimic partial biological behavior is very important for the in-depth study of DNA or RNA. Here, three different interaction modes of uracil–uracil base pairs (U-motif) have been explored in the coordination complexes of 2′-deoxyuracil 5′-monophosphate (dUMP) and uracil 5′-monophosphate (UMP) with transition metal ions by single crystal structural analysis and DFT calculations for the first time. The results indicate that the structural diversity of non-classical nucleobase pairs may be a bank of supramolecular interactions, which will contribute to the study of supramolecular chemistry and biochemistry.

Abstract:The hydrothermal reaction of ZnUO2(OAc)4.7H2O with pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid gives rise to a novel uranium-zinc-organic coordination polymer containing infinite U-O-Zn double sheets and organic ligands. Thermal and photoelectrochemical analyses indicate that the coordination polymeric compound not only has a high thermal stability but also exhibits interesting photoelectronic properties.

Abstract:In this paper, two novel 1D uranyl coordination polymers, [(UO2)(HPDTC)(H2O)]Cl (1) and [(UO2)(DPA)(H2O) (2) based on pyridine acid have been synthesized using hydrothermal method. The structure was obtained with the help of a Single Crystal X-ray diffraction meter and further characterized by IR, UV–vis, TG and others. The compounds show good luminescence properties and the uranium center exhibits the same pentagonal bipyramid coordination geometry among the compounds. Their electrochemical properties have been investigated through Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Galvanostatic Charge/Discharge (GCD). It reveals the counterion ions in compound 1 improve the electrical properties as the capacity is 56.94 F g−1.

Abstract:The self-assembly of uranyl peroxide polyhedra into a rich family of nanoscale cage clusters is thought to be favored by cation templating effects and the pliability of the intrinsically bent U-O2-U dihedral angle. Herein, the importance of ligand and cationic effects on the U-O2-U dihedral angle were explored by studying a family of peroxide-bridged dimers of uranyl polyhedra. Four chemically distinct peroxide-bridged uranyl dimers were isolated that contain combinations of pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate, picolinate, acetate, and oxalate as coordinating ligands. These dimers were synthesized with a variety of counterions, resulting in the crystallographic characterization of 15 different uranyl dimer compounds containing 17 symmetrically distinct dimers. Eleven of the dimers have U-O2-U dihedral angles in the expected range from 134.0 to 156.3°; however, six have 180° U-O2-U dihedral angles, the first time this has been observed for peroxide-bridged uranyl dimers. The influence of crystal packing, countercation linkages, and π-π stacking impact the dihedral angle. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the ligand does not alter the electronic structure of these systems and that the U-O2-U bridge is highly pliable. Less than 3 kcal·mol(-1) is required to bend the U-O2-U bridge from its minimum energy configuration to a dihedral angle of 180°. These results suggest that the energetic advantage of bending the U-O2-U dihedral angle of a peroxide-bridged uranyl dimer is at most a modest factor in favor of cage cluster formation. The role of counterions in stabilizing the formation of rings of uranyl ions, and ultimately their assembly into clusters, is at least as important as the energetic advantage of a bent U-O2-U interaction.
Polymers or Supramolecules Generated from A New V-Shaped Bis-Monodentate Ligand and the Effect of Steric Hindrance on Coordination Modes of the Ligand

Abstract:A new V-shaped bis-monodentate ligand L (L = 2,3'-dipyridylamine) (1) has been designed and synthesized by alkylation reaction of pyridylamine. An investigation of the charge distributions of the coordination atoms and single-point energy calculations of four conformers of ligand L based on the geometry of conformers optimized by the DFT (density functional theory) method was carried out. The results show that the four conformers of ligand L take on two stable and two less stable configurations. Theory forecasts that two relatively stable configurations present in complexes as probable coordination motifs of the ligand, and that steric hindrance of pyridine nitrogen atoms in isomers will affect its coordination ability together with the electronic factor. This forecast has been demonstrated by the coordination chemistry of ligand L, that is, configuration (a) and (b) of the ligand occur in the following reported complexes, which combines with Ag-I or Cu-II through two coordination modes (bidentate bridging or a monodentate mode) resulting in coordination polymers {[Ag (L)(2)]NO3}(n) (2), [Cu-2(L)(2)(Maa)(4)](n) (maa = methacrylic acid) (3), and the mononuclear molecule [Cu(L)(4)](ClO4)(2)(.)2CH(3)CH(2)OH (4). The ligand assumes different coordination modes in the three complexes because of different levels of steric hindrance of the pyridine nitrogen atoms in the conformers. Interestingly, polymers 2 and 3 assume a 1D helical structure and a linear framework, respectively, and 4 has a 2D supramolecular architecture induced from hydrogen bond interactions. In addition, the magnetic proper-ties of 3 have been explored, which shows a strong antiferromagnetic interaction.

Abstract:The in situ hydrothermal reactions Of UO2(NO3)2 with 1-oxo-4-cyanopyridine (ocpy) and ethyl (S)-lactate (e-la) afforded two unprecedented chiral 2D neutral luminescent square grids, uranyl-bis(1-oxo-4-pyridylcarboxylate) UO2(opyca)2 (1) and homochiral uranyl-bis [(S) -lactate] (2). A Homochiral Cu(Ii) Coordination Polymer Built from Helical Motif Based on Two V-Shaped Ligands

Abstract:By using a V-shaped N-containing ligand and a V-shaped carboxylate ligand, we have successfully synthesized a 3D novel copper homochiral coordination polymer, namely [Cu(OPY)(1,3-bdc)]n (complex 1), [1,3-H2bdc=isophthalic acid, OPY=4,4′-(oxybis(4,1-phenylene))dipyridine]. The compound has been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by IR, elemental analysis, single crystal X-ray diffraction, XRD, UV–vis, and TG analysis. The complex 1 crystallizes in the chiral space group P65 and possesses an unprecedented uninodal 3D 75∙8 topology. However, the complex was synthesized by achiral materials. The complex 1 displays a moderate SHG response and its SHG efficiency is about 0.3 times that of urea. In addition, the compound shows high thermal stability.
