Abstract:As emerging crystalline porous organic-inorganic hybrid materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used as sacrificial precursors for the synthesis of carbon materials, metal/metal compounds, and their composites with tunable and controllable nanostructures and chemical compositions for electrochemical energy applications. Herein, recent progress of MOF-derived nanomaterials for various electrochemical energy storage and conversion applications including Li-ion batteries, Li-S batteries, Na-ion batteries, supercapacitors, water splitting, and oxygen reduction reaction is reviewed. Structural and compositional design of MOF-derived nanomaterials is systematically summarized, which may hopefully offer inspirations and guidances for future development of MOF-derived nanomaterials for more efficient and more durable electrochemical energy applications.

Abstract:With many apparent advantages including high surface area, tunable pore sizes and topologies, and diverse periodic organic-inorganic ingredients, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been identified as versatile precursors or sacrificial templates for preparing functional materials as advanced electrodes or high-efficiency catalysts for electrochemical energy storage and conversion (EESC). In this Mini Review, we first briefly summarize the material design strategies to show the rich possibilities of the chemical compositions and physical structures of MOFs derivatives. We next highlight the latest advances focusing on the composition/structure/performance relationship and discuss their practical applications in various EESC systems, such as supercapacitors, rechargeable batteries, fuel cells, water electrolyzers, and carbon dioxide/nitrogen reduction reactions. Finally, we provide some of our own insights into the major challenges and prospective solutions of MOF-derived functional materials for EESC, hoping to shed some light on the future development of this highly exciting field.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), a new class of crystalline porous organic–inorganic hybrid materials, have recently attracted increasing interest in the field of energy storage and conversion. Herein, recent progress of MOFs and MOF composites for energy storage and conversion applications, including photochemical and electrochemical fuel production (hydrogen production and CO 2 reduction), water oxidation, supercapacitors, and Li‐based batteries (Li‐ion, Li–S, and Li–O 2 batteries), is summarized. Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have drawn tremendous attention because of their abundant diversity in structure and composition. Recently, there has been growing research interest in deriving advanced nanomaterials with complex architectures and tailored chemical compositions from MOF‐based precursors for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Here, a comprehensive overview of the synthesis and energy‐related applications of complex nanostructures derived from MOF‐based precursors is provided. After a brief summary of synthetic methods of MOF‐based templates and their conversion to desirable nanostructures, delicate designs and preparation of complex architectures from MOFs or their composites are described in detail, including porous structures, single‐shelled hollow structures, and multishelled hollow structures, as well as other unusual complex structures. Afterward, their applications are discussed as electrode materials or catalysts for lithium‐ion batteries, hybrid supercapacitors, water‐splitting devices, and fuel cells. Lastly, the research challenges and possible development directions of complex nanostructures derived from MOF‐based‐templates for electrochemical energy storage and conversion applications are outlined.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as desirable cross-functional platforms for electrochemical and photochemical energy conversion and storage (ECS) systems owing to their highly ordered and tunable compositions and structures. In this Review, we present engineering principles promoting the electro-/photochemical performance of MOF-based materials for ECS by component design and nanostructuring. Through the discussion of the engineering strategies of pristine MOFs, MOF composites, and their derivatives for ECS, the superiority and composition-structure-activity relationships of the engineered MOF-based materials with advanced components and nanostructures will be clarified. Finally, we provide a concluding discussion on the challenges and direction of future development in this emerging area of MOF-based materials for ECS.

Abstract:Nano metal‐organic frameworks as an attractive new class of porous materials, are synthesized via metal ions and organic ligands. With their desirable properties of abundant pores, high specific surface areas, fully exposed active sites and controllable structures, nano MOFs are acknowledged to be one of the most vital materials in electrochemical energy storages. However, in their practical applications, nano MOFs are still confronted with various difficulties and challenges because of their low conductivity, poor stability, and other disadvantages. The selection and development of MOF composites, MOF‐derived materials and modified MOFs might be beneficial to use as better electrode materials to greatly improve the electrochemical properties of energy storage devices. This paper mainly focuses on the recent developments of nano MOFs as prospective materials in electrochemical energy storage applications, including lithium‐ion batteries (LIB), lithium‐sulfur batteries (LSB), zinc‐ion batteries (ZIB), and supercapacitors (SCs). Finally, the challenges faced by these kinds of energy storage devices are proposed, along with the current directions and prospect.

Abstract:To fulfill the growing energy demands, electrochemical energy storage (EES) technologies have played a pivotal role in the field of renewable energy storage and power supply. Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have attracted great attention due to their unique porous structure and associated multifunctional properties. During the processing of MOF materials to obtain the corresponding derivative materials, heterogeneous elements are introduced as mediators and influence the structure and properties of the final obtained materials. This review focuses recent research progress in the field of EES based on heterogeneous elements doped MOF derivatives (H-MOFs), and proposes the heterogeneous element doping and design synthesis strategies in the construction of H-MOFs. The application of H-MOFs in alkali metal batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, supercapacitors, and other devices were systematically summarized, and the mechanism of its performance enhancement was analyzed. Finally, the current status, possible deficiencies and unresolved issues are pointed out, and future research directions and contents are discussed.

Abstract:As modern society develops, the need for clean energy becomes increasingly important on a global scale. Because of this, the exploration of novel materials for energy storage and utilization is urgently needed to achieve low-carbon economy and sustainable development. Among these novel materials, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of porous materials, have gained increasing attention for utilization in energy storage and conversion systems because of ultra-high surface areas, controllable structures, large pore volumes and tunable porosities. In addition to pristine MOFs, MOF derivatives such as porous carbons and nanostructured metal oxides can also exhibit promising performances in energy storage and conversion applications. In this review, the latest progress and breakthrough in the application of MOF and MOF-derived materials for energy storage and conversion devices are summarized, including Li-based batteries (Li-ion, Li–S and Li–O2 batteries), Na-ion batteries, supercapacitors, solar cells and fuel cells.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives are two developing families of functional materials for energy storage and conversion. Their high porosity, versatile functionalities, diverse structures, and controllable chemical compositions offer immense possibilities in the search for adequate electrode materials for rechargeable batteries. Despite these advantageous features, MOFs and their derivatives as electrode materials face various challenging issues, which impede their practical applications. From this perspective, we present both the opportunities and challenges that MOFs/MOF composites and MOF-derived materials bring to rechargeable batteries, including lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, lithium-oxygen batteries, and sodium-ion batteries. By discussing the development of MOFs/MOF composites and MOF-derived materials in each battery system, some design principles that dominate the specific electrochemical behaviors are outlined, with the key requirements that a practical electrode should fulfill. At the end, a basic guidance and future directions for further development are provided.

Abstract:With the increasing industrial activities, the surge of population, rising global climate change concerns, as well as the increasing energy consumption and demands, traditional rechargeable batteries have started losing the capacity to meet the needs of current and future markets. In order to rise up to this challenge, the development of advanced, flexible and controllable energy technology has become the need of the hour. Development of electrochemical energy conversion and storage (EECS) technology is a potential way forward because of its high energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. One way to improve the efficiency of EECS devices is to focus on the development and improvement of their components, such as electrode materials, separators and catalysts. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have become an emerging class of crystalline materials in materials science and coordination chemistry due to their unique activity, interesting properties and tunable structures. Among various transition-metal based MOFs, iron (Fe)-based metal organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) have attracted special attention due to their excellent physicochemical properties and the abundance of iron. Herein, this article reviews the recent applications of Fe-MOFs and their derivatives in electrochemical energy conversion and storage. In this review, the synthesis methods of Fe-MOFs and their derivatives, energy storage applications of Fe-MOFs in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs), supercapacitors (SCs), electrocatalysis and other batteries are discussed in detail. In addition, the achievements and challenges of Fe-MOFs and their derivatives in the fields of rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors and electrocatalysis are summarized. Furthermore, the possible innovative design principles and future prospects of Fe-MOFs and their derivatives as EECS materials are presented.

Abstract:Recently, the development of clean sustainable energy storage and conversion technologies to deal with environmental pollution and the forthcoming energy crisis has attracted much attention in the energy research community. It is critical to develop carriers to store energy or to facilitate mass and electron transportation in energy storage and conversion. The emerging metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are well suited for this purpose because of their inherent advantages, including structural diversity, functionality, tailorability, and versatile applications. Moreover, when utilized as supports and sacrificial precursors, MOFs can immobilize active functional materials and create highly controllable nanostructures, respectively, gaining new momentum for energy applications. In this review, we present the recent progress in the field of energy storage and conversion using MOFs and their composites and derivatives by focusing on the correlation of structure, composition, and function.

Abstract:As a youthful family of crystalline porous materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), assembled by inorganic vertices (metal ions or clusters) and organic ligands, feature ultrahigh porosity, high surface area, and synthetic and structural tailorability, along with relatively easy synthesis, making them excellent candidates for a large number of applications. Recently, increasing research interest in the electrochemical fields with regard to the environment and energy has been received. Lots of MOFs have been designed, prepared, and used in electrochemical applications, exhibiting fascinating performances. Here, the rational fabrication of electrochemical-application-directed functional MOFs and MOF composites is appraised. The synthetic strategies for the enhancement of corres-ponding MOF electrochemical behaviors are summarized and the relationship between structure and electrochemical performance is discussed. It is expected that the summary will be helpful for the future development of related MOFs and MOF composites with an excellent electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based materials, including pristine MOFs, MOF composites, and MOF derivatives, have become a research focus in energy storage and conversion applications due to their customizability, large specific surface area, and tunable pore size. However, MOF-based materials are currently in their infancy, and more efforts need to be dedicated to enable them to perform competitively in large-scale practical applications. This updated review provides an overview of the advances in MOF-based materials in energy storage and conversion applications, including gas storage, batteries, supercapacitors, and photo/electrochemical energy conversion, highlighting the advantages of different materials in various scenarios. Finally, we summarize the current challenges and status of MOF-based materials for energy storage and conversion and provide an outlook for future research directions.
