Abstract:Piying is an old Chinese art form and one of the origins of the modern movie. In Piying, the shadow of fur made characters with delicate carving could be seen by audience in front of the curtain. The artists behind the curtain control the actions of shadows using sticks fastened to the characters. The spirit of traditional Piying performance is to express rich stories and emotion through action change controlled by artists. Now, digital forms of Piying characters can be made as a way of retaining cultural legacy. The thing is how people could interact with the digital characters instead of just watching screen animations without the traditional improvising change. It is an exploration of ways of preserving the classic cultural treasure in a natural and novel way. The studio draws a connection between an old Chinese form and modern-day movies and TEI can provide a fun intersection between culture and creation.

Specifically, we look at how different levels of linguistic knowledge contribute to children’s interpretation of three interface phenomena: focus interpretation, wh-quantification, and scope assignment. The investigation of each interface phenomenon centers on the following three questions, and data from child Mandarin are reported to address these questions.

Abstract:The DNA nanotechnology outlines a new chapter in biological sciences, opening a new era of scientific and technological advancements. A pioneer of DNA nanotechnology, Professor Liu from the University of Stuttgart in Germany, our latest Light People, has been working at the interface, where nanophotonics meets biology and chemistry. On the path of scientific explorations, she believes in hard working and persistency, as indicated by a line of Chinese poetry she likes, "Don't stop chasing the wind and the moon, the spring mountain is at the end of the plain." She is an outstanding female researcher, radiating wisdom. She is a pioneer in exploring the power of DNA nanotechnology and applying it to other disciplines. Meanwhile, she struggles with work–life balance. Apart from being determined and persistent, Prof. Liu is also introspective. One sees the brilliance of a scientist and the struggles of a mother, as Prof. Laura Na Liu explains to us her very personal "philosophy of life".

Abstract:EDITORIAL: "Mind-controlled information transmission" is one of human's ultimate fantasies for the development of science and technology. On June 11, 2022, eLight Journal simultaneously published two research papers on brainwave-based metasurfaces, and proposed a new concept of metasurface controlled by mind for the first time in the world. This major scientific breakthrough rushed up to the hot search list of public media. It was read more than ten million times, and the related video has been played 600,000 times, which aroused the audience's strong interest and discussion, and really made a significant leap toward "mind control". We are greatly honored to invite Prof. Cheng-Wei Qiu from National University of Singapore, the corresponding author of both above-mentioned articles and the co-Editor-in-Chief of eLight Journal, to have an exclusive interview. Prof. Cheng-Wei Qiu showed us the profound interpretation of his research works and shared his unique insights on journal development and talent cultivation.

Abstract:Previous studies on the activity of bio-molecules in a cell were mostly performed on the basis of ensemble averaging.However,with the advent of new technology,especially optical and fluorescence techniques,it is now possible to visualize the dynamics and kinetics of a single bio-molecule in the living cell in real time.From the methodological aspect,many techniques are now available:fluorescent resonance energy transfer,atomic force microscopy,total internal reflection fluorescence,fluorescence correlation microscopy,and so forth.The investigation of single molecule behavior will probably open a new horizon in the future biological study.However,still many technical limitations existed,for example,the lack of small molecule fluorescent probes and new types of microscope with higher resolution beyond diffraction barrier,the difficulties in visualizing small fluorescent spot in the cell interior.

Abstract:Nanophotonics has emerged as a cutting-edge interdisciplinary research field today.
