Abstract:Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) is a winter phenomenon initiated primarily by the enhanced stationary planetary waves (SPWs), characterized by an increase in polar stratospheric temperature by a few tens of kelvin for a few days. Wave-wave non-linear interaction can produce secondary waves, with sum and difference frequencies of the primary wave frequencies. The sun-synchronous semidiurnal tide is a major component at mid and high latitude middle atmosphere, which non-linearly interacts with the dominant SPW in the stratosphere to produce the zonally symmetric semidiurnal tide component (S0), as observed during two boreal SSWs. The zonally symmetric distribution of ozone has also potential to excite the S0 component by absorption of solar ultraviolet radiation as evident during a rare Austral SSW. Overall, the present study sheds light on the dominant generation mechanisms involved in the S0 enhancement during the SSW.

Abstract:Using a network of meteor radar observations, observational evidence of polar-to-tropical mesospheric coupling during the 2018 major sudden stratosphere warming (SSW) event in the northern hemisphere is presented. In the tropical lower mesosphere, a maximum zonal wind reversal (−24 m/s) is noted and compared with that identified in the extra-tropical regions. Moreover, a time delay in the wind reversal between the tropical/polar stations and the mid-latitudes is detected. A wide spectrum of waves with periods of 2 to 16 days and 30–60 days were observed. The wind reversal in the mesosphere is due to the propagation of dominant intra-seasonal oscillations (ISOs) of 30–60 days and the presence and superposition of 8-day period planetary waves (PWs). The ISO phase propagation is observed from high to low latitudes (60° N to 20° N) in contrast to the 8-day PW phase propagation, indicating the change in the meridional propagation of winds during SSW, hence the change in the meridional circulation. The superposition of dominant ISOs and weak 8-day PWs could be responsible for the delay of the wind reversal in the tropical mesosphere. Therefore, this study has strong implications for understanding the reversed (polar to tropical) mesospheric meridional circulation by considering the ISOs during SSW.

Abstract:We present a study of the major and minor SSWs that have occurred in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) over the past four decades (1981-2020) from a statistical perspective. This study investigates the frequency and timing of occurrence of major and minor SSWs during the specified period. A correlation is observed between the timing of the earliest minor SSWs and final events, having different correlation coefficients in all four decades, with minimum correlation during the decade 2001-2010, including the extended solar minima. In the second part of our work, we examined SSW events of the last 18 winters based on ERA5 and MERRA2 reanalysis data. Surprisingly, the stratospheric parameters have been found to show different behaviors depending on the number of SSW events in a winter. The temperature and Zonal mean zonal wind variations are stronger during winters with one major SSW, rather than winters having major SSW accompanied by minor SSWs. Finally, we conducted four case studies to investigate the atmospheric and ionospheric response to major and minor SSWs over three stations, namely Okinawa ( 26.21°N,127.68°E ), Yamagawa ( 35.45°N,133.62°E ), and Wakkanai ( 45.16°N,141.75°E ). Like the stratospheric parameters, ionospheric parameters are not found to be much depended on the number of SSWs in a winter, but they are found to vary from event to event. Significant latitudinal variations in ionospheric parameters were observed in all events, with more pronounced effects toward lower latitudinal station Okinawa. Although ionospheric disturbances are more pronounced during major SSWs, some severe minor events also have notable ionospheric impacts just as the major SSW.

Abstract:A comparative study on the impact of rare Southern Hemisphere (SH) Sudden Stratospheric Warmings (SSW) on the middle atmospheric circulation is investigated using a global reanalysis dataset. Since the SH SSW generally occur around spring equinox marking the seasonal transition, so an attempt has been made to isolate the seasonal transition effect from the actual data by carrying out deseasoning to delineate the effects mainly due to the warming. The deseasoned winds are able to extract relatively weak dynamical signatures of SSW at lower altitudes in terms of prominent zonal mean easterly forcing around the peak warming day (PWD) which are not evident from the actual winds. The influence of 2002 SSW seems to reach the troposphere in terms of easterly deseasoned forcing, which is not the case in 2019. Also the deseasoned winds in the stratosphere reveals earlier occurrence of easterly forcing in the extratropical latitudes, which progresses poleward around the PWD indicating a possible tropical precursor to the SH SSW. In general, the actual upper mesospheric wind is dominated by seasonal transition but the deseasoned winds reveal easterly and southerly forcing due to the SSW. Interestingly, the horizontal flow is found to be very different or even opposite in direction at different longitudes indicating uneven longitudinal response of the atmosphere to the warming events across the globe. Overall, the present study provides a detailed and comparative overview of the middle atmospheric circulation in terms of zonal mean flow and concomitant zonal variability during two rare major and minor SSW events in the SH.

Whole Atmosphere Coupling during the September 2019 Antarctic Sudden Stratospheric Warming

Abstract:A sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) is a large-scale meteorological phenomenon, which is most commonly observed in the Arctic region during winter months. In September 2019, a rare SSW occurred in the Antarctic region, providing a unique opportunity to study its impact on the middle and upper atmosphere. Geopotential height measurements by the Microwave Limb Sounder aboard NASA's Aura satellite reveal a burst of westward-propagating quasi-6-day wave (Q6DW) with zonal wavenumber 1 in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere following the SSW. At this time, ionospheric data from ESA's Swarm satellite constellation mission show prominent 6-day variations in the daytime equatorial electrojet intensity and low-latitude plasma densities. The whole atmosphere model GAIA reproduces salient features of the middle and upper atmosphere response to the SSW. GAIA results suggest that the observed ionospheric 6-day variations are not directly driven by the Q6DW but driven indirectly through tidal modulations by the Q6DW. An analysis of global total electron content data reveals signatures of secondary waves arising from the nonlinear interaction between the Q6DW and tides.

Abstract:Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are large‐scale phenomena characterized by dramatic dynamic disruptions in the stratospheric winter polar regions. Previous studies, especially those employing whole atmosphere models, indicate that SSWs have strong impacts on the circulation of the mesosphere lower thermosphere (MLT) and drive a reversal in the mean meridional circulation (MMC) near 90–125 km altitude. However, the robustness of these effects and the roles of SSW‐induced changes in global‐scale wave activity to drive the reversal have been difficult to observe simultaneously. This work employs horizontal lower thermospheric (∼93–106 km altitude) winds near 10°S‐40°N latitude from the Michelson Interferometer for Global High‐resolution Thermospheric Imaging instrument onboard the Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) to present observational evidence of a prominent MLT MMC reversal associated with the January 2021 major SSW event and to demonstrate connections to semidiurnal tidal activity and possible associations with a ∼3‐day ultra‐fast Kevin wave.

Arctic Stratosphere Dynamical Processes in the Winter 2021–2022

Abstract:The Arctic stratosphere winter season of 2021–2022 was characterized by a stable, cold stratospheric polar vortex with a volume of polar stratospheric clouds (PSC) close to the maximum values since 1980, before the beginning of minor sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events in the late February and early March and major SSW on 20 March. Analysis of dynamical processes of the Arctic stratosphere using reanalysis data indicates that the main reasons for the strengthening of the stratospheric polar vortex in January–February are the minimum propagation of planetary wave activity from the troposphere to the stratosphere over the past 40 years and its reflection in the upper stratosphere–lower mesosphere in the second half of January. The first minor SSW was limited to the upper polar stratosphere, whereas the second one propagated to the middle and lower stratosphere and led to the disappearance of the PSC, which prevented significant ozone depletion. Both minor and major SSW events led to a weakening of the residual meridional circulation in the upper Arctic stratosphere and its intensification in the middle and lower stratosphere, which contributed to additional warming of the subpolar region and weakening of the polar vortex.

Abstract:It has recently been suggested that observations of neutral density from satellite accelerometer data indicate a strong cooling occurred in the upper thermosphere during the January 2009 sudden stratospheric warming (SSW). The 2009 warming was a major event with winter polar stratospheric temperatures increasing by 70 K. This January period has been re-examined with three independent models: the NRLMSISE-00 empirical model; the physics-based coupled thermosphere, ionosphere, plasmasphere, electrodynamics model (CTIPe); and the whole atmosphere model (WAM). The analysis of this period and comparison with the neutral density observations reveals that there is, in fact, no evidence at any latitude for a large-scale or global decrease in upper thermosphere density or temperature in response to the SSW. The observed decrease in density and temperature can be amply accounted for by small changes in geomagnetic activity during this period. On the contrary, the WAM numerical simulations of the period suggest a possible small globally averaged upper thermosphere warming and neutral density increase by 5% during the SSW. This warming would have been difficult to discern in the local-time sampling of the CHAMP observations due to likely change in the diurnal density variation during the SSW, and due to a much larger contribution to the variability from geomagnetic sources. At this stage, therefore, it is not possible to ascertain if a cooling or warming occurred in the upper thermosphere in response to the stratospheric warming. Citation: Fuller-Rowell, T., R. Abstract:The vertical wavenumber (VWN) characteristics during sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events (2003–2016) is investigated for the first time using temperature observation of Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) on-board Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics Dynamics (TIMED) satellite (for the altitude range of 20–70 km) and ERA-Interim reanalysis data (for the altitudes of 0.1–20 km). Highly negative VWN spectral slope value (approximately) of −4.82 (at 25° N, 77° E) and −4.41 (at 35° N, 77° E) at 40–50 km altitude is observed during the 2013 SSW event, a sort of which is not perceived in any other SSW events (2003–2016). The combined effect of planetary waves (PWs) with wavenumber 1 and 2 during 2013 SSW may be responsible for such distinctive observation near the peak temperature altitude. This study elicits the importance of polar vortex portraying that lower latitudes are affected if only the vortex splits and presents the first of its kind VWN characteristics during SSW events.

Perturbations of Global Wave Dynamics During Stratospheric Warming Events of the Solar Cycle 24

Abstract:The paper presents analysis and interpretation of observed perturbations of global wave dynamics in the Ionosphere-Thermosphere-Mesosphere (ITM) during the recent mid-winter Arctic Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) events under solar minimum (2009, 2010, 2018, and 2019), transition to solar maximum (2012) and solar maximum (2013) conditions of the Solar Cycle 24. Employing the 116-level configuration of the thermosphere extension of Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCMX-116L), constrained by the meteorological troposphere-stratosphere analyses of Goddard Earth Observing System, version 5 (GEOS-5) of Global Modeling and Data Assimilation Office, we study and characterize the striking amplifications of the solar thermal semidiurnal tide, as one of the main drivers of the ITM variability, after onsets of major and minor SSW events. The dominance and growth of the semidiurnal tide over the diurnal and terdiurnal modes in the lower thermosphere above ~100 km are typical features of the tidal dynamics during major SSW events of the Solar Cycle 24 as suggested by model predictions. The growth of the semidiurnal tidal mode during SSW events is also supported by observational analysis of diurnal cycles from temperature space-borne observations (SABER/TIMED). In the vertical domain of the meteor radar observations at the Southern extra-tropics and low latitudes the model and data revealed the systematic presence of the strong quasi two-day wave wind oscillations that prevail over the tidal winds between 80 and 100 km during mid-January SSW events. In the high and middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere model simulations are capable to reproduce the day-to-day variability of tidal and PW oscillations deduced from satellite temperature data. The self-consistent whole atmosphere predictions of global-scale components of neutral dynamics (prevailing winds, planetary waves and tides) become important factor to reproduce and forecast the perturbed state of the ITM as observed from the ground and the space during SSW events of the Solar Cycle 24. The SSW-driven global perturbations of tides can significantly change diurnal cycles of the plasma in the low-latitude and extra-tropical E-region of the ionosphere as will be briefly illustrated by day-day variations of observed and simulated total electron content and plasma drifts.
The Latitudinal Variation and Hemispheric Asymmetry of the Ionospheric Lunitidal Signatures in the American Sector During Major Sudden Stratospheric Warming Events

Abstract:During sudden stratospheric warming events, the ionosphere exhibits phase‐shifted semidiurnal perturbations, which are typically attributed to vertical coupling associated with the semidiurnal lunar tide (M2). Our understanding of ionospheric responses to M2 is limited. This study focuses on fundamental vertical coupling processes associated with the latitudinal extent and hemispheric asymmetry of ionospheric M2 signatures using total electron content data from the American sector. Our results illustrate that the asymmetry maximizes at 15°N and 20°S magnetic latitudes. In the Southern Hemisphere, the M2‐like signatures extend deep into midlatitude and encounter the Weddell Sea Anomaly. The time evolution of the Anomaly exhibits a distortion, which is attributed to an M2 modulation. The hemispheric asymmetry of M2 signatures in the low latitude can be primarily explained by the transequatorial wind modulation of the equatorial plasma fountain. Other physical processes could also be relevant, including hemispheric asymmetry of the M2 below the F‐region, the ambient thermospheric composition and ionospheric plasma distribution, and the geomagnetic field configuration.

Comparison of Key Characteristics of Remarkable SSW Events in the Southern and Northern Hemisphere

Abstract:An exceptionally strong sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) during September 2019 was observed. Because SSW in the SH is very rare, comparison with the only recorded major SH SSW is done. According to World Meteorological Organization (WMO) definition, the SSW in 2019 has to be classified as minor. The cause of SSW in 2002 was very strong activity of stationary planetary wave with zonal wave-number (ZW) 2, which reached its maximum when the polar vortex split into two circulations with polar temperature enhancement by 30 K/week and it penetrated deeply to the lower stratosphere and upper troposphere. On the other hand, the minor SSW in 2019 involved an exceptionally strong wave-1 planetary wave and a large polar temperature enhancement by 50.8 K/week, but it affected mainly the middle and upper stratosphere. The strongest SSW in the Northern Hemisphere was observed in 2009. This study provides comparison of two strongest SSW in the SH and the strongest SSW in the NH to show difference between two hemispheres and possible impact to the lower or higher layers.

Satellite-observed Strong Subtropical Ocean Warming As an Early Signature of Global Warming

Abstract:Satellite observations covering the last four decades reveal an ocean warming pattern resembling the negative phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. This pattern has therefore been widely interpreted as a manifestation of natural climate variability. Here, we re-examine the observed warming pattern and find that the predominant warming over the subtropical oceans, while mild warming or even cooling over the subpolar ocean, is dynamically consistent with the convergence and divergence of surface water. By comparison of observations, paleo-reconstructions, and model simulations, we propose that the observed warming pattern is likely a short-term transient response to the increased CO 2 forcing, which only emerges during the early stage of anthropogenic warming. On centennial to millennial timescales, the subpolar ocean warming is expected to exceed the temporally dominant warming of the subtropical ocean. This delayed but amplified subpolar ocean warming has the potential to reshape the ocean-atmosphere circulation and threaten the stability of marine-terminating ice sheets.

Abstract:The planetary wave activity in the stratosphere–mesosphere during the Arctic major Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) in February 2018 is discussed on the basis of microwave radiometer (MWR) measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) above Kharkiv, Ukraine (50.0° N, 36.3° E) and the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) measurements of CO, temperature and geopotential heights. From the MLS data, eastward and westward migrations of wave 1/wave 2 spectral components were differentiated, to which less attention was paid in previous studies. Abrupt changes in zonal wave spectra occurred with the zonal wind reversal near 10 February 2018. Eastward wave 1 and wave 2 were observed before the SSW onset and disappeared during the SSW event, when westward wave 1 became dominant. Wavelet power spectra of mesospheric CO variations showed statistically significant periods of 20–30 days using both MWR and MLS data. Although westward wave 1 in the mesosphere dominated with the onset of the SSW 2018, it developed independently of stratospheric dynamics. Since the propagation of upward planetary waves was limited in the easterly zonal flow in the stratosphere during SSW, forced planetary waves in the mid-latitude mesosphere may exist due to the instability of the zonal flow.

Abstract:The rotation of the earth breaks time-reversal and reflection symmetries in an opposite sense north and south of the equator, leading to a topological origin for certain atmospheric and oceanic equatorial waves. Away from the equator the rotating shallow water and stably stratified primitive equations exhibit Poincare inertio-gravity waves that have nontrivial topology as evidenced by their strict superinertial timescale and a phase singularity in frequency-wavevector space. This non-trivial topology then predicts, via the principle of bulk-interface correspondence, the existence of two equatorial waves along the equatorial interface, the Kelvin and Yanai waves. To directly test the nontrivial topology of Poincare-gravity waves in observations, we examine ERA5 reanalysis data and study cross-correlations between the wind velocity and geopotential height of the mid-latitude stratosphere at the 50 hPa height. We find the predicted vortex and anti-vortex in the relative phase of the geopotential height and velocity at the high frequencies of the waves. By contrast, lower-frequency planetary waves are found to have trivial topology also as expected from theory. These results demonstrate a new way to understand stratospheric waves, and provide a new qualitative tool for the investigation of waves in other components of the climate system.

Pattern of Early-Stage of Global Warming Emerged in Satellite Measurements

Abstract:The satellite-observed sea surface temperature (SST) provides an unprecedented opportunity to evaluate the ongoing global warming and has recently reached a milestone of 40-year temporal coverage. One of the major spatial features captured by satellites is strong subtropical (weak subpolar) ocean warming. In contrast, studies of past climate changes suggest that the greatest ocean warming should occur, however, at higher latitudes. Here, by comparing satellite observations with reconstructed mid-Pliocene SST and simulated SST evolution driven by abrupt increase in CO2, we find that the currently observed warming pattern is an expression of an early and temporary stage of planetary warming under the forcing of rapidly increasing greenhouse gas. The enhanced subtropical ocean warming, sharing similar spatial structure with the subtropical ocean gyres, is likely attributed to the background subtropical convergence of surface water. In a long-term perspective, the warming of the oceans at higher latitudes is expected to overtake the temporally strong subtropical ocean warming. This delayed but amplified subpolar ocean warming has the potential to reshape the ocean-atmosphere circulation and threaten the stability of marine-terminating ice sheets.
