Abstract:This article uses a typology of action framework to analyze a selection of the gospels’ parables. It does so by connecting these parables to A. G. Haudricourt and C. Ferret’s research on the “anthropology of action”. After summarizing Haudricourt’s and Ferret’s results, I relate modes of action to types of emplotment. I select four parables as the basis of my analysis, using J. P. Meier’s findings as a guide for selection. I discern in these four parables four modes of emplotment, which enables me to insert them into larger narrative networks found within the gospels. I locate the corpus of narratives determined this way in the context of Jesus’ time so as to better appreciate how the four modes of emplotment combine into a typology of action shaped by a specific social and cultural context. Within this typology of action, I put a spotlight on the way our corpus’ modes of emplotment make use of “discontinuous actions” (coined by Ferret). “Discontinuous actions” decisively initiate or correct a specified course of events. The stress on this dimension of action applies to the relationships occurring between humans and the natural world, within the social world, and between humans and the supranatural world, thus connecting one order of reality with another.

Abstract:Space and Culture, Ahead of Print. Over long periods, interdisciplinary debates in urban studies on the relationships between religion and urban space were influenced by mainstream versions of modernization theory. These were based on the binary of urban modernity and nonurban (religious) tradition. However, historical urban research has shown that cities were also more often sites of religious innovation. Inspired by Jennifer Robinson's understanding of cities as "ordinary" sites of sociality, with this special issue we contribute to this vibrant debate on religion and urbanism. The articles in it examine the role of places of worship as spatial and urban projects and address the following questions: How do religious actors become spatial entrepreneurs whose spatial projects shape cities? Which religiously motivated social and material forms emerge in cities? What are the practices and regimes that contribute to the spatialization of religion? How does the nature of places of worship alter and adapt to rapidly changing urban environments? And what are the consequences of religious buildings and other material forms for the social reality of cities? We argue that in contrast to former periods, when religious buildings were considered and constructed as authoritative buildings, these buildings are now much more fluid. Broad social transformations profoundly changed the roles played by and the social meanings attributed to them. Religious buildings and informal religious sites are not mere static architectural structures but bring with them a wide variety of spatial, economic, political, affective, and spiritual investments which make their construction, presence, and transformation a slippery object for urban planning logics and experts.

(Re)Connecting Analytic Philosophy and Empirical Research: The Example of Ritual Speech Acts and Religious Collectivities

Abstract:In this paper, I demonstrate how philosophical insights and empirical research on the use of religious language can be fruitfully combined to tackle issues regarding the ontology of religious collectivities and the agency of group actors. To do so, I introduce a philosophical framework that draws on speech act theory and recent advances in the fields of collective intentionality and social ontology, with particular attention paid to the work of Raimo Tuomela. Against this backdrop, I discuss a brief case study based on my fieldwork among Jehovah’s Witnesses in Switzerland and Germany. In particular, I call attention to the structure of the Witnesses’ ritual interactions and to the types of speech acts that are performed in their congregational settings. I argue that the communicative framework provided by these rituals is particularly suited to the creation of genuine group intentions that cannot be reduced to the private intentions of the individual group members. In conclusion, I argue that most of the language used in religious contexts does not deviate much from everyday language; however, particular ritual settings can elicit performative effects and constitute new social realities that can have a concrete impact on both individuals and religious groups.
Biblical Studies in Light of Paul Ricoeur's Narrative Theory

Abstract:From the eighteenth century onwards, historical criticism gradually became popular in biblical studies. Scholars affected by this trend of thought no longer regarded events in the Bible as literal historic events, but looked for corroboratory historical evidence for biblical stories outside of the Bible. Conservative scholars regarded supernatural events in the Bible as history, while liberal scholars regarded them as a form of the imaginary, which let to a split in biblical studies between history and fiction adherents. Hans Frei tried to break away from the influence of positivistic methodology and focused on the narrative itself, but he did not fully consider the correlation between the significance of the biblical text and its historical referents. In his three-volume work Time and Narrative, Paul Ricoeur suggested that the opposition between history and fiction in modern and contemporary biblical studies could be mitigated by interweaving history and fiction. Although Ricoeur put forward these ideas as a means of discussing the dialectical relationships between time and narrative, he did not apply the idea to biblical research. This paper draws on Ricoeur's ideas to reconsider the relations between narrative meaning and historical reference in biblical narratives.

Abstract:Abstract In the history of Chinese literature, the Zhuangzi authors were the first to grant a voice to diverse forms of life, among them a snake, a tree, a dead man, a divine turtle, and even the wind. What exactly is the interest of incorporating nonhuman protagonists in brief literary fictions? Was there something at stake when trying out this pioneering narrative technique, or was it just for the sake of literary innovation and entertainment? Through a detailed analysis of a set of concise narratives, this study uncovers a consistent critique of the religious institutions (chiefly divination and sacrifice), as well as the economic practices prevalent during the Warring States period. It aims to demonstrate that the Zhuangzi's comprehensive critique of the Zhou cultural order achieves its “hearability” through a recurrent use of striking dualities, including day and night, dream and wakefulness, and humans and nonhumans. A heretofore silent and passive community of living beings raises its voice and is able to challenge the well-established discourse proclaiming human sovereignty over the natural world. These voices and the themes they raise serve, among other things, as a literary strategy intended to illuminate the universality of violence and the criminal essence of human culture (wen 文).

Abstract:In this Introduction, I make the case for an interdisciplinary exchange between philosophy, literature, and communication studies that explores the ontological question of being through an analysis of the communicative acts constitutive of being human. Literature provides the grounds on which the philosophical exploration of communication is carried out. To clarify the proposed inquiry, I re-imagine the possibility of a "natural science" native to the humanities through an appropriation of Aristotle. A sketch of a theory of literature is advanced so the structure and significance of the essays presented in this special issue are made clear and they can be oriented in relation to the existing field of communication studies. The theoretical sketch explains what I mean by a "natural science," namely, coming to understand the ways by which we become human through our communicative praxis. After showing how the essays collected here each speak to the guiding theory that structures the special issue, I conclude with a general call for interdisciplinarity coalesced around the ancient axiom "Know Thyself." Such a call offers a succinct statement of the mission of humanistic studies as envisioned within this special issue.
Narrative Agency in Maurice Blanchot’s Récits? A Case Study on Death Sentence and Awaiting Oblivion (I)

Abstract:This article investigates a type of narrative that is unacknowledged by classical narratology and hardly included in postclassical narratology studies: that of lyrical and philosophical prose, often containing elements belonging to the dramatic genre. Starting from Brian McHale’s urge to address Monika Fludernik’s exclusion of poeticity from narratology and Jan Alber’s inclusion of any poem in narrativity, I use different definitions and clarifications from classical and postclassical narratology (Vladimir Propp, Greimas, Roland Barthes, Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan, Sarah Drews Lucas, Gerald Prince, James Phelan, Peter Hühn, Jens Kiefer, Hanna Meretoja, Rachel Blau DuPlessis, John Shoptaw, Samuel Caleb Wee, Roy Sommer, Manfred Jahn, Roland Weidle), also bringing elements on agency from drama (via Martin Esslin’s notion of the “Theater of the Absurd”) in order to find the best tools to explain how Blanchot’s Death Sentence and Awaiting Oblivion elude narrative agency. On the one hand, these récits challenge the usual borders between literature and philosophy and, on the other hand, they refuse taxonomic boundaries such as what we understand by literary genres. Thus, my article focuses on the lack of narrative agency in these texts, a notion that is paradoxically connected to the affirmation of passion and passivity, which characterizes the experience of literature and death alike, often in the form of the neuter. I relate Blanchot’s neuter to Emmanuel Levinas’s il y a and I discuss the formula “X without X” as not purely privative but as a pre-critical notion which Blanchot used in order to emphasize the divide passion/passivity/action/activity. While in my discussion of Death Sentence, I define the unnarratable and the difference between the two stories that make it up, completing each other and taking the reader from the realm of life to the realm of death and back to life, in the section on Awaiting Oblivion, I deal with the philosophical language and dramatic devices of the text. With a preamble on its themes: waiting, forgetting, and speaking continuously (or “blathering”, to use Samuel Beckett’s term), I finally put Awaiting Oblivion in relation to Beckett’s Waiting for Godot.

Abstract:With a rhetoric perspective, this paper aims to lead a deep and systematic research on touhui (a special commencing in vernacular novel, namely, to tell a short story relevant or irrelevant to the texts before starting narration). It reveals the synchronous basic status and the historical evolution of touhui's structure. Quantitative methods are introduced in the statistic calculation and generalization of the frequency, the structural form and the “beginning words” of touhui.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the study of the constituents of the narrative structure of French literary text from the standpoint of narratology. In our study of the peculiarities of the narrative structure of the literary text of the New Novel period, we rely on theoretical positions related to the central categories of the theory of narrative. The main attention is paid to the cognitive and communicative mechanisms of the construction of the literary narrative through such narrative constructs as the narrator, the story and its varieties, focalization. The narrator is one of the main components of the narrative structure of a literary text, as it appears as a structural and organizing element that determines the plot-compositional text structure of a literary work. The story is considered a functional category of the narrative structure of the literary text, since it realizes the function of a narrative image, the carrier of which can be equally the narrator and the character in the literary text. Focalization determines all forms of narrative presence, including the narrator, it limits the choice of narrative information in terms of what is called "authorial omniscience." The subject of focalization as the holder of the focus of vision can be the narrator or a character from whose point of view events and/or actions are presented verbally.

Abstract:Abstract This introductory position paper aims to familiarise the reader with the pragmatics of ritual and previous research in this field. Ritual is a complex pragmatic phenomenon present in many types of interaction, and it has been subject to academic inquiries in various disciplines. We will draw on previous research to provide a working definition of ritual, which will help us to introduce the present collection of papers. We will then introduce the different, but interrelated, methodologies used in ritual research, categorising these complementary methodologies as ‘top-down’ and ‘bottom-up’ respectively. We use this categorisation to overview the contributions of the special issue from a methodological perspective. Finally, a summary of the contents of the special issue completes this introduction.

Abstract:Abstract This is the guest editors’ introductory paper to the special issue “Situating jurilinguistics across cultures using translation and discourse approaches.” The introduction showcases the interdisciplinary vocation of jurilinguistics from its conception almost forty years ago. It is argued that jurilinguistics has achieved its current maturity by diversifying the disciplinary lenses of the originally contributing disciplines of legal translation and legal studies while keeping faithful to its original principles—facing practical problems with a rigorous outlook, venturing into any new domains that may prove enlightening, and combining professional and academic perspectives. The authors highlight how the series of conferences “Jurilinguistics: Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Study of Language and Law” have been instrumental in enhancing the scope of jurilinguistics. Finally, the articles gathered in this special issue are presented and their contributions in advancing the knowledge available for practitioners and scholars meeting at the interface between law and language are underscored.

Abstract:The history of interreligious encounters is marked by the cross reading of the Classics that, through their form and content, determine specific episte/ne and belief systems. <, Sacred books are inserted into larger canonical ensembles, and religious shifts caused by textual encounters do not originate in the reading of the former only. This article starts with one of these encounters, that between Chinese scholars and Jesuit missionaries in the 17th and 18th centuries. It relies on the teachings drawn from this case to sketch a path from Gadamer's hermeneutics to dialogic hermeneutics. in this light it reads the theological endeavor and not only Christian theology as marked by a migratory tension, which makes of any local theology the virtual space of an intercultural crossing.

Abstract:This volume, which brings together thirteen essays written by international specialists in the language, literature, and culture of ancient Greece, pursues a new approach to ancient Greek narrative beyond the taxonomies of structuralist narratologies. Focusing on the phenomenal and experiential dimension of our response to narrative, it triangulates ancient narrative with ancient criticism and cognitive approaches. Concepts such as immersion and embodiment help to establish a more comprehensive understanding of ancient narrative and ancient reading habits, as manifested in Greek criticism and rhetorical theory. At the same time, the rich ancient material opens up a historical perspective for cognitive studies. The individual chapters tackle a wide range of narrative genres, broadly understood, besides epic, historiography, and the novel, also tragedy and early Christian texts, while also considering such media as dance and sculpture. They do so with the help of a rich set of theoretical and methodological tools, taken from cognitive studies, phenomenology, and linguistics.

Abstract:Written Communication, Volume 40, Issue 1, Page 175-209, January 2023. This article examines the power of special topoi to characterize the discourse of literary criticism, and through emphasis on rhetorical action, it sheds light on the limitations of topos analysis for characterizing research articles in disciplinary discourse more generally. Using an analytical approach drawn both from studies of topoi in disciplinary discourse and rhetorical genre theory, I examine a representative corpus of 21st-century literary research articles. I find that while most of the special topoi recognized by Fahnestock and Secor and Wilder remain prevalent in recent criticism, contemporary literary critics tend to draw on only a select subset of those topoi when making claims about their rhetorical actions. The topoi they use most often—mistaken-critic and paradigm—help identify the ways knowledge-making work is undertaken in literary criticism, a discipline often considered epideictic rather than epistemic. But what the special topoi do not capture is precisely the distinctly motivated, actively epistemic character of this disciplinary rhetoric. Based on these findings, I suggest that special topoi must be seen as functioning in the context of the rhetorical action undertaken by literary research articles. These articles undertake not simply persuasion but the particularly humanistic act I refer to as contributing to scholarly understanding: a rhetorical action worth attending to for scholars of disciplinary discourse, because it is deliberately more concerned with practice than product.

Abstract:From time immemorial, ethnic diversity in society often resulted in conflict instead of cooperation. Religion played a pivotal role in uniting or dividing people. In the New Testament world, James Dunn (2006) describes the dynamics of a pluralistic society as that of unity in diversity. Furthermore, other prominent scholars in the New Testament studies such as Haenchen (1985:467) and Witherington (1998:439) aptly describe Acts 15:1-35 as a “turning point” and a “watershed”, respectively, in relation to the dynamics of ethnic conflict resolution. The main thrust of this paper to interrogate a conflict-resolution in the pluralistic environment of Acts 15. This paper will be informed by insights and the lens of narrative method. The coming of this method into the New Testament studies was not well received by traditional scholars who viewed it as taking the Bible as fictional as work. Nevertheless, this paper maintains that the Council of Jerusalem in Acts 15 (50 CE) can be examined and analysed using narratological insights.

Abstract:Starting from a historical reflection on the concept of hybridization, and in particular on its circulation between natural and social sciences, this contribution attempts to identify some of the processes by which cereal rituals are reformulated when the relevance of associated representations and practices is eroded. Among other examples, it mobilizes the case of millet rituals in Taiwan, modified by the introduction of rice cultivation and then by Christianization. The last section revisits the concepts and approaches used in the field so as to better balance theoretical rigor and imagination in the study of the transformations that continue to affect the meaning given to cultivation and food practices.
