In literary studies, the conversation about how affect theory might help us to interpret literature is still emerging. The goal of the present discussion is to provide a critical overview of work by scholars who draw on the insights of recent theory to read literary texts written in English. At the same time that the discussion offers an appraisal of the current state of scholarship, it also seeks to identify emerging new directions in research.

Abstract:Empirical research has demonstrated that individuals vary widely in how they view their emotions. We call the viewpoints that individuals have towards their emotions emotion perspectives. While many subdisciplines of psychology, such as social psychology and clinical psychology, have studied this topic, research thus far can be siloed, despite overlap in terms and constructs. The goal of the current special issue and this introduction is to describe the state of research on emotion perspectives, highlight common themes in streams of emotion perspective research, and present future directions for investigation. The first portion of this introduction to the special issue provides a basic review of emotion perspective research, spotlighting topics such as emotion beliefs, emotion mindsets, lay theories of emotion, and attitudes toward emotion. The second portion of the introduction presents themes that cut across papers in the special issue, with a discussion of future research directions throughout. The goal of this introduction and special issue is to serve as a guide for greater integration in emotion perspective research and to provide a roadmap for emotion perspective research moving forward.

Abstract:Emotion Review, Ahead of Print. There is a long tradition in philosophy and literary theory defending the view that engagement with literature promotes readers' empathy. Until the last century, few of the empirical claims adduced in that tradition were investigated experimentally. Recent work in psychology and neuropsychology has now shed new light on the interplay of empathy and literature. This article surveys the experimental findings, addressing three central questions: What is it to read empathically? Does reading make us more empathic? What characteristics of literature, if any, affect readers' empathy? While experimental studies have delivered no conclusive answers to these questions, it has exposed their psychological complexity and constructed a more nuanced picture of the diverse ways in which literature interacts with our empathic capacities.

Abstract:Emotions are a crucial part of compelling narratives: literature tells us about people with goals, desires, passions, and intentions. Emotion analysis is part of the broader and larger field of sentiment analysis, and receives increasing attention in literary studies. In the past, the affective dimension of literature was mainly studied in the context of literary hermeneutics. However, with the emergence of the research field known as Digital Humanities (DH), some studies of emotions in a literary context have taken a computational turn. Given the fact that DH is still being formed as a field, this direction of research can be rendered relatively new. In this survey, we offer an overview of the existing body of research on emotion analysis as applied to literature. The research under review deals with a variety of topics including tracking dramatic changes of a plot development, network analysis of a literary text, and understanding the emotionality of texts, among other topics.

Abstract:For this Special Issue, I highlight the past and present importance of appraisal theory as well as the challenges to its status as a total theory of emotions from the other functions of emotions: associative learning, self-regulation and social communication. This theoretical view applies both to emotion research in general and the specific fields of my interest in the emotions of moral judgment and intergroup processes. Methodologically, developments in analyses of large and more naturally occurring data sets will give an opportunity to square psychology's structural models of discrete emotions with the more complicated reality that exists. Both for the field and for individual researchers picking up the study of emotions, my advice is to pay special attention to measures, their assumptions and their context.

Abstract:Starting from the expression and perception of basic emotions such as disgust and fear, Liuzza and colleagues propose a validated Italian version of the body odor disgust sensitivity scale -BODS, measuring individual differences in body odor disgust, a trait that plays an important role in understanding, for example, social behaviors.Next, Frumento and colleagues analyze which perceptual features make an animal more-or-less scary to phobic and non-phobic people. By allowing participants to modify the spider's perceptual features (hairiness, body/leg size, and locomotion) in real-time on a computerized interface, their research aims to advance our knowledge of phobic preferences and improve the acceptability of exposure therapies.Moving from individual to dual processing of emotions, Smekal et al. investigated the factors underlying naturalistic action recognition and understanding, as well as the errors occurring during recognition failures. In particular, they provide evidence on how form, motion, and temporal information differentially contribute to subjective action understanding in the context of naturalistic action perception.In the language domain, Del Maschio et al. provide evidence that stronger emotional resonance underpins the processing of words in the native language of bilingual individuals, pointing to the different sensitivity of the hemodynamic responses to emotional information depending on the selected language.Emotions also play a vital role at the social level, impacting various crucial aspects of work such as job satisfaction, performance, and employee well-being. In the mini-review from Boukarras et al., studies that have employed interpersonal (neuro)physiology to quantify the asymmetrical contagion of emotions in different contexts are examined. The review revealed that delayed synchronization of physiological states is a widespread phenomenon that may underpin the transmission of emotions, with implications for various aspects of organizational life, including leader-to-employee communication, and could drive the development of effective leadership training programs Understanding the neurobiology of reward processing is another important aspect of the realm of emotions. Two studies in this collection address this topic. First, Bertrand et al. provide evidence of a diffuse limbic territory sensitive to reward within the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in non-human primates (macaca fascicularis). Then, Kraus and colleagues move to humans and systematically summarize available experimental results that assessed the modulation of social reward processing by intranasal oxytocin (IN-OXY) administration.Finally, Sirgiovanni et al. investigate how complex social emotions such as shame and guilt differently impact the tendency to internalize the causality of negative events, attribute responsibility to themselves and others, and engage in responsible behavior. Findings indicate that guilt-prone people tend to attribute a higher degree of culpability to others, which is consistent with the view that guilt motivates people to choose the "moral paths in life".The overall collection is a timely project as the study of emotions is not just important but necessary due to the significance of emotions in well-being and cultural change, which requires emotional intelligence from everyone to better understand each other as humans.

Abstract:Emotion plays an important role in our daily lives. Ever since the 19th century, experimental psychologists have attempted to understand and explain human emotion. Despite an extensive amount of research conducted by psychologists, anthropologists, and sociologists over the past 150 years, researchers still cannot agree on the definition of emotion itself and have continued to try and devise ways to measure emotional states. In this paper, we provide an overview of the most prominent theories in emotional psychology (dating from the late 19th century to the present day), as well as a summary of a number of studies which attempt to measure certain aspects of emotion. This paper is organized chronologically; first with an analysis of various uni-modal studies, followed by a review of multi-modal research. Our findings suggest that there is insufficient evidence to neither prove nor disprove the existence of coherent emotional expression, both within subjects and between subjects. Furthermore, the results seem to be heavily influenced by both experimental conditions as well as by the theoretical assumptions that underpin them.

Abstract:In the Age of Multimedia and Social Networks, the proliferation of user-generated data has been nothing short of meteoric. This wealth of information necessitates careful analysis and processing to truly comprehend the subjective perceptions of users. At the intersection of this data-driven revolution, two critical fields emerge: Sentiment Analysis and Affective Computing. Sentiment analysis delves into the intricate realm of people's opinions, sentiments, evaluations, attitudes, and emotions as expressed through written language. On the other hand, Affective Computing focuses on the development of systems and devices capable of recognizing, interpreting, processing, and even simulating human emotions. It is, in essence, the fusion of Emotion AI and other affective technologies, with the overarching goal of enhancing people's lives. With the exponential growth of user-generated data, thanks to social networks, wikis, and social tagging systems, it has become imperative to decipher the high-level semantics and user subjective perceptions embedded in this vast sea of information. Emotions and sentiments, in particular, stand out as significant facets of user-generated data, often carrying the emotional imprints of their creators. The concurrent advancement of computational techniques for sentiment analysis and opinion mining has been accompanied by a surge in the utilization of psychological and cognitive models and theories. These are being harnessed to model sentiments and emotions, often in synergy with social computing techniques such as social network analysis and personalization, user review mining, and user profiling within social networks, among others. The synergy between affective/sentimental models and social computing techniques is not merely an academic endeavor; it paves the way for comprehending big data at a semantic level and enhances the performance of a wide array of social computing applications in this era of big data. This convergence not only combines affective and sentimental models with social computing but also charts a promising direction replete with opportunities for developing novel algorithms, methods, and tools. It is a privilege for us to introduce the Special Issue on Sentiment Analysis and Affective computing in Multimedia Data on Social Network. Among the numerous research papers we received (50 in total), we meticulously selected 18 papers for publication. The overarching objective of this special issue is to delve into the recent advancements and disseminate state-of-the-art research related to sentiment analysis and affective computing in multimedia data within social networks and the technologies that make this possible. This special issue represents a showcase of new dimensions of research, offering researchers and industry professionals an illuminating perspective on sentiment analysis and affective computing in the realm of multimedia data within social networks. We sincerely hope that the contributions in this special issue will not only inform but also inspire future research endeavors, leading to a deeper understanding of the multifaceted world of sentiment analysis and affective computing in the age of multimedia and social networks.

Abstract:ABSTRACTTo commemorate that Cognition & Emotion was established three decades ago, we asked some distinguished scholars to reflect on past research on the interface of cognition and emotion and prospects for the future. The resulting papers form the Special Issue on Horizons in Cognition and Emotion Research. The contributions to Horizons cover both the field in general and a diversity of specific topics, including affective neuroscience, appraisal theory, automatic evaluation, embodied emotion, emotional disorders, emotion-linked attentional bias, emotion recognition, emotion regulation, lifespan development, motivation, and social emotions. We hope that Horizons will spark constructive debates, while offering guidance for the future growth and development of research on the interface between cognition and emotion. Finally, we provide an update on how Cognition & Emotion has fared over the past year, and announce some changes in editorial policies and the editorial board.

Abstract:Topics in Early Childhood Special Education, Ahead of Print. Emotion talk is a research-based strategy aimed at improving young children's social and emotional development. To date, there are no systematic reviews that document the effectiveness of teacher's emotion talk with young children in early childhood classrooms. In this systematic review we examined the literature on teacher-facilitated emotion talk as a primary intervention to improve young children's social and emotional development. We identified six manuscripts that met our inclusion criteria. Results indicate emotion talk can improve social and emotional skills for young children in areas such as emotional knowledge and comprehension, prosocial behavior, and classroom engagement.

Abstract:A pressing question facing literary scholars who are working on emotion is that of what literary analysis and literary history can bring to the history of emotions. While disciplines such as psychology, anthropology, linguistics and various branches of history have made notable contributions to the study of emotions past and present, precisely how imaginative literature might fit into emotion studies remains unclear. This essay suggests that attention to the tropes and forms with which literature performs its imagining may be the best way to incorporate literature into the history of emotions. I focus in particular on how personification in Middle English texts translates abstract emotions into bodily terms in order to represent them as embodied phenomena and to elicit emotional responses. By examining the personification of emotions in these texts, we can see how imaginative literature might both shape and constitute emotional practice.

Studying the history of emotions is arguably one of the most important topics for understanding contemporary life, which becomes clear as you traverse this book. It is divided into several chapters that cover an extraordinary territory from generally introducing the reader to the history of the 'history of emotions' to how we can use the insights from this relatively new discipline to understand what we actually mean by emotions, and further trace how certain emotions have varied across cultures and times to give us a new perspective on our current understanding of emotions and their place in our lives. The history of emotions as a discipline started with the French historian, Lucien Febvre, who in 1941 asserted that 'there should be no simple application of 20th century psychology to earlier historical periods' (p.5). At the time, Freudian psychoanalysis was still dominant and often used to explain the motivations and feelings of historical individuals. The history of emotions tried to understand emotions in their own context, through historical accounts and language as well as objects. In the latter chapters of the book, Dixon demonstrates what we have learnt through 'case studies of specific families of feeling — terror and happiness taken together, rage, and finally love' (p.20). He shows how the study of the history of emotions 'can be a liberating experience. To discover how radically different the interpretations, expressions and categories of feelings were in the past is to loosen the hold of our contemporary psychological notions over us' (p.18). Unnatural Emotions in Contemporary Narrative Fiction

Abstract:The beginning of the twenty-first century witnessed not only an affective turn in contemporary fiction but also an affective turn in literary criticism. In the current scholarship of emotion studies, critics mainly focus on the mimetic aspects of emotion from a cognitive perspective while neglecting its antimimetic aspects. This article argues that not all stories are created by the normal and usual emotions. Instead, there exist so-called unnatural emotions in contemporary avant-garde and antimimetic narratives, which are physically, logically, or humanly impossible. Through presenting unnatural emotions, contemporary avant-garde narratives not only foreground the fictionality of unnatural narratives but also generate defamiliarizing effects. Taking Ian McEwan's Dead as They Come as an example, the article proposes a synthetic approach to unnatural emotions by combining both naturalizing reading strategies and unnaturalizing reading strategies, so as to make the unnatural narrative work readable without losing its unnaturalness.

Abstract:Emotion Review, Ahead of Print. Stories, in pictorial format, orally narrated, and later on as narrative texts, have played a key role in human evolution and to this day continue to surreptitiously teach us things and skills. In recent decades, psychologists and cognitive scientists have begun documenting the role of stories, and particularly fiction, in refining our sociocognitive skills. In this essay, I focus specifically on how stories, particularly written fiction, hone our emotion recognition skills. I present a brief overview of existing theorizing and research findings, and propose the less-is-more hypothesis, according to which emotion recognition skills are sharpened by stories that do not tell us, but rather show us the emotional life of fictional characters.

Abstract:This research topic emerged from a growing recognition of the intricate relationship between language and emotion-a relationship that spans various disciplines and offers profound insights into human behavior and cognition. As researchers in psychology, linguistics, and related fields increasingly focus on the intersection of these domains, it became evident that there is a need for a comprehensive exploration of how language both reflects and shapes emotional experiences. The motivation behind this special issue is to bring together cuttingedge research that addresses these dynamics through diverse methodologies, providing a holistic view of how language and emotion influence one another.The dynamic interplay between language and emotion has been a focal point of research across multiple disciplines, revealing that these two domains are deeply interconnected. Emotional states impact language processing-affecting comprehension, word retrieval, and sentence construction (Barrett, 2017;Pavlenko, 2014). Conversely, language shapes and constructs emotional experiences, providing a conceptual framework for individuals to categorize and articulate their feelings (Lindquist, Satpute, & Gendron, 2012). This intricate relationship has captivated scholars across psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, and media studies, leading to the development of theoretical frameworks that explore the mutual influence between language and emotion. For example, the James-Lange Theory of Emotion examines how bodily responses relate to emotional experiences, while Cognitive Appraisal Theory explores how cognitive evaluations shape emotions. These theories have significantly advanced our understanding of the bidirectional influence between emotions and language, especially in terms of production and comprehension (Ellsworth & Scherer, 2003).Recent research continues to open new pathways for exploration, leading to the evolution of models in this area. Early work, such as Gross's process model of emotion regulation (Gross, 1998), illustrates how emotional regulation strategies can shape linguistic choices, particularly in social and educational contexts. Technological advancements have further enhanced our ability to analyze language through emotional and psychological lenses. Innovations in psycholinguistics and computational linguistics have introduced sophisticated methods for classifying and assessing language within emotional frameworks, providing invaluable insights into how emotions influence communication across various contexts (Pennebaker, 2011). These evolving theoretical frameworks have uncovered subtle variations in emotional expression related to attention, emotional states, social dynamics, cognitive processes, and individual differences, reshaping linguistic and emotional research.As the study of language and emotion continues to reveal new layers of complexity, this special issue offers a timely exploration of these intersections. The contributions featured in this collection examine themes such as emotional semantics, cross-linguistic emotional experiences, and the neural representation of language. Drawing from diverse disciplinary perspectives, these articles highlight the nuanced and multifaceted relationship between words and emotions, providing readers with fresh insights into this rapidly evolving field. Bailey, Halamova, and Vráblová contribute an acoustic analysis of therapy sessions, identifying vocal patterns tied to self-compassion, self-criticism, and self-protection, thereby advancing the understanding of emotional expression in therapeutic contexts. Abstract:Emotional experiences are driven, in part, by the way we process and integrate information from different sensory modalities. Understanding how perceptual and emotional systems interact to give rise to subjective feelings is an important, complex and challenging issue, requiring new approaches and integrative thinking that fuses the fundamentals of low-level sensory perception with higher-level cognitive and affective processes. The Theme Issue 'Sensing and feeling: an integrative approach to sensory processing and emotional experience' showcases fifteen theoretical, empirical, and review articles from experts working at the intersection of perception and emotion, encompassing multiple sensory systems (visual, auditory, tactile and interoceptive), clinical and non-clinical perspectives (e.g. affective disorders and hearing loss), contextual and social perspectives, and complex emotional experiences in special populations. Articles in Part 1 emphasize recent advances across fields in sensory and emotion science and give insights into future directions. Each article in Part 2 provides more detailed and specific methodological approaches or theoretical models, and focuses on basic mechanisms linking sensation to emotional experience. Abstract:In this paper, the second in the pair, we discuss how psychologists, linguists, and computer scientists model emotion from a computational perspective. First, we draw some parallels between the formalization of the emotions in the human body and the development of computational systems. Then we look at three influential schools for formalizing emotion in language, and we use a specific example to show that they do not have the same concerns and expressive power. We give some examples of computational resources for emotions, insisting on why the variety of languages and cultures makes it impossible to apply a monolithic universal approach. We then turn to emotion and opinion and briefly overview opinion mining and emotion generation. Instead of describing techniques and technologies and providing quantitative results, we try to present a “big picture” of emotion processing.

Abstract:Emotion in strategic management has attracted increasing scholarly interest during the past twenty-five years. Researchers have demonstrated the nature and significance of emotion in strategic management from a broad range of perspectives across different levels of analysis. Given the expanding research on the topic, the time is ripe to synthesize this diverse and multifaceted body of knowledge. In a thematic synthesis of the literature, we address the following questions: how does emotion influence strategic management, and how can the field be further developed? We review emotion constructs used in the extant literature and identify three themes related to how emotions influence strategic management: the nonconscious influence of emotions, emotion regulation, and collective emotions. Based on these themes and our analysis, we propose three areas of future research to inspire the field to develop further: (1) scope conditions of emotion research in strategic management; (2) capturing emotion in strategic management; and (3) the ethics, power and politics of emotions in strategic management.

Abstract:The seminal work on Affective Computing in 1995 by Picard set the base for computing that relates to, arises from, or influences emotions. Affective computing is a multidisciplinary field of research spanning the areas of computer science, psychology, and cognitive science. Potential applications include automated driver assistance, healthcare, human-computer interaction, entertainment, marketing, teaching and many others. Thus, quickly, the field acquired high interest, with an enormous growth of the number of papers published on the topic since its inception. This paper aims to (1) Present an introduction to the field of affective computing though the description of key theoretical concepts; (2) Describe the current state-of-the-art of emotion recognition, tracing the developments that helped foster the growth of the field; and lastly, (3) point the literature take-home messages and conclusions, evidencing the main challenges and future opportunities that lie ahead, in particular for the development of novel machine learning (ML) algorithms in the context of emotion recognition using physiological signals.
