Abstract:We report on the experimental and numerical investigations of dissipative rogue waves (DRWs) among noise-like pulses, in a thulium-doped fiber laser mode locked by a monolayer MoS2 saturable absorber. By increasing the pumping power or weakening the effective cavity spectral filtering, the statistics distributions of the pulse events deviate from the Gaussian statistics to the L-shaped distributions with long tail, accompanied by the increase of the DRWs proportion. Our observations reveal the dissipative nature of rogue waves in dissipative systems.

Abstract:There are many examples in physics of systems showing rogue wave behaviour, the generation of high amplitude events at low probability. Although initially studied in oceanography, rogue waves have now been seen in many other domains, with particular recent interest in optics. Although most studies in optics have focussed on how nonlinearity can drive rogue wave emergence, purely linear effects have also been shown to induce extreme wave amplitudes. In this paper, we report a detailed experimental study of linear rogue waves in an optical system, using a spatial light modulator to impose random phase structure on a coherent optical field. After free space propagation, different random intensity patterns are generated, including partially-developed speckle, a broadband caustic network, and an intermediate pattern with characteristics of both speckle and caustic structures. Intensity peaks satisfying statistical criteria for rogue waves are seen especially in the case of the caustic network, and are associated with broader spatial spectra. In addition, the electric field statistics of the intermediate pattern shows properties of an optical sea with near-Gaussian statistics in elevation amplitude, and trough-to-crest statistics that are near-Rayleigh distributed but with an extended tail where a number of rogue wave events are observed.

Abstract:We address the various initial excitations of the Peregrine rogue wave and establish a robust transmission scheme of high power pulses extracted from the Peregrine rogue wave in a standard telecommunications fiber. The results show that the Peregrine rogue wave can be excited by using a weak pulse atop a continuous wave background and that the high power pulses extracted from the Peregrine rogue wave exhibit the typical characteristics of breathing solitons. The influence of higher-order effects, such as the third-order dispersion, the self-steepening and the Raman effect, on the propagation of the pulse extracted from the peak position and the interaction between neighboring high power pulses induced by initial perturbations are also investigated.

Abstract:Based on the variable-coefficient Lugiato-Lefever equation, nonlinear dynamics of rogue waves in whispering gallery mode optical resonators are studied. By means of the analytical solution in the absence of pump, dynamical behaviors of the rogue waves in the periodic system are discussed. Firstly, the first-order rogue wave under the condition of no pumping has obvious periodic nature, and the periodicity of width and amplitude of rogue wave can be consistent by controlling the wavefront curvature, and the energy of rogue wave remains stable under the small gain parameter, and the inverse diffraction effect makes the center position of rogue wave produce a small offset. In addition, the amplitudes of second-order rogue waves have more complicated periodicity and longer period lengths both with the good stability. At last, the dynamical behaviors of rogue wave after adding external excitation are investigated. Under the periodical external excitation with the lower intensity, rogue wave can achieve a longer stable transmission time, while the smaller wavefront curvature can effectively prolong the stable transmission time of rogue wave. Moreover, we investigate the influence of different forms of external excitation on rogue wave, and the periodical external excitation makes rogue waves more stable than the constant external excitation. These results extend the application of higher-order rogue waves in (2 + 1)-dimensional nonlinear systems, and have implications for the development of high-energy optical pulses.

Abstract:We demonstrate controllable parabolic-cylinder optical rogue waves in certain inhomogeneous media. An analytical rogue wave solution of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation with spatially modulated coefficients and an external potential in the form of modulated quadratic potential is obtained by the similarity transformation. Numerical simulations are performed for comparison with the analytical solutions and to confirm the stability of the rogue wave solution obtained. These optical rogue waves are built by the products of parabolic-cylinder functions and the basic rogue wave solution of the standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Such rogue waves may appear in different forms, as the hump and paw profiles.

Abstract:Amplified spontaneous Raman emission under picosecond pulse pumping is studied in detail both experimentally and numerically. It is found that the Raman output pulses are noise-like with partial coherence, which has important implications for various applications. Numerical simulation reproduces the finding well, along with the temporal and spectral dependence of the Raman pulse on the pump pulse energy. The numerical simulations of the temporal, spectral, and energy evolution of the Raman and pump pulse along the fiber gives insight on how to design such sources.

Abstract:The field of optical rogue waves is a rapidly expanding topic with a focus on explaining their emergence. To complement this research, instead of providing a microscopic model that generates extreme events, we concentrate on a general quantitative description of the observed behavior. We explore two complementary top-down approaches to estimating the exponent describing the power-law decaying distribution of optical rogue waves observed in supercontinuum generated in a single-mode fiber in the normal-dispersion regime by applying a highly fluctuating pump. The two distinct approaches provide consistent results, outperforming the standard Hill estimator. Further analysis of the distributions reveals the breakdown of power-law behavior due to pump depletion and detector saturation. Either of our methods is adaptable to analyze extreme-intensity events from arbitrary experimental data.

Abstract:We identify the role of transverse modes in causing temporal instability in an all-solid-state laser system and thus propose a new method to trigger deterministic optical rogue waves. Experimental investigations show that the near-degenerate transverse modes with mode frequency difference close to the relaxation oscillation frequency is responsible for the rogue waves. By tilting the reflective mirror, the transverse modes beating frequency decreases and gets close to relaxation oscillation frequency, thus the system exhibits self-pulsing behavior and rarely-arising giant pulses. The statistical distribution of the pulse intensity deviates from the exponential statistics to the L-shaped distributions with long tails, indicating the appearance of optical rogue waves. The conclusion can be extended to other Class-B lasers where the population inversion cannot be eliminated adiabatically.

Abstract:Statistics and dynamics of 2D rogue waves in a broad-area semiconductor laser with an intracavity saturable absorber are numerically investigated under the effect of transverse carrier diffusion. We show that lateral diffusion of carriers alters the statistics of rogue waves by enhancing their formation in smaller ratios of carrier lifetimes in the active and passive materials while suppressing them when the ratio is larger. Temporal dynamics of the emitted rogue waves is also studied and shown that finite nonzero transverse carrier diffusion coefficient gives them a longer duration. To further approach the realistic experimental situation, we also investigated statistics and dynamics of rogue waves by simulating a circular disk-shape pump which replaces the flat pump profile typically used in numerical simulations of broad-area lasers. We show that finite pump shape reduces the number emitted rogue waves per unit area for large carrier lifetime ratios and increases that for smaller values of the ratio in both below and above laser threshold. Temporal width of the emitted rogue waves is also shown to reduce as a consequence of removing the nonphysical effects of infinite flat pump on carrier dynamics.

Abstract:We consider the Maxwell-Bloch equations that describe the propagation of coherent optical pulses in a resonant two-level medium associated with the self-induced transparency phenomenon. Using degenerate Darboux transformation, the dynamical evolution of coherent multi-optical rogue waves is constructed with different kinds of wave patterns: fundamental-, triangular-, and ring-type patterns. We also discuss the explicit analytical forms of these universal patterns as well as we provide the corresponding numerical data of the obtained optical rogue waves.

Abstract:Rogue waves are ubiquitous in nature, appearing in a variety of physical systems ranging from acoustics, microwave cavities, optical fibers, and resonators to plasmas, superfluids, and Bose–Einstein condensates. Unlike nonlinear solitary waves, rogue waves are extreme events that can occur even without nonlinearity by, for example, spontaneous synchronization of waves with different spatial frequencies in a linear system. Here, we report the observation of rogue-wave-like events in human red blood cell (RBC) suspensions under weak light illumination, characterized by an abnormal L-shaped probability distribution. Such biophotonic extreme events arise mostly due to the constructive interference of Mie-scattered waves from the suspended RBCs, whose biconcave shape and mutable orientation give rise to a time-dependent random phase modulation to an incident laser beam. We numerically simulate the beam propagation through the colloidal suspensions with added disorder in both spatial and temporal domains to mimic random scattering due to Brownian motion. In addition, at high power levels, nonlinear beam self-focusing is also observed, leading to a dual-exponential probability distribution associated with the formation of multiple soliton-like spots. Such rogue wave events should also exist in environments with cells of other species such as swimming bacteria, and understanding of their underlying physics may lead to unexpected biophotonic applications.

Abstract:Rogue wave is a kind of surface gravity waves with much larger wave heights than expected in normal sea state. Since this extreme sea event always occurred in the areas with strong currents, the wave-current interaction was considered to be one of the physical mechanics of the formation of the rogue wave. Some breather type solutions of the NLS equation have been considered as prototypes of rogue waves in ocean which usually appears from smooth initial condition only with a certain disturbance. In this paper, we have numerically studied evolutionary process of the Peregrine breather rogue wave based on the current modified fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation (the CmNLS equation). During the generation and evolution of the Peregrine breather rogue wave, the effects of the steady current was investigated by comparing with the results without current. The differences of the focusing position/time were observed due to the current influence.

Abstract:Fiber lasers offer tabletop nonlinear environments to mimic and study the complex dynamics of nature. Optical rogue waves, rarely occurring extreme intensity fluctuations, are one of the many subjects that can be investigated with a fiber laser cavity. Although oceanic rogue waves are a result of spatiotemporal dynamics, the single-mode nature of the fiber laser and the commonly used measurement techniques limit the optical rogue wave studies to only temporal dynamics. In this study, we overcome such limit to observe rogue wave real-time dynamics in spatiotemporally mode-locked fiber lasers by utilizing state-of-the-art compressed ultrafast photography technique. The multimode laser cavity exhibits long-tailed non-Gaussian distributions under relaxed cavity constraints. Single-shot spatiotemporal measurements of rogue events showed that, instead of noise bursts, the cavity produces clean pulses with high-quality beam profiles. Our results indicate that rogue events in spatiotemporally mode-locked fiber lasers undergo nonlinear spatial transformation due to a power-dependent consistent attractor.

Abstract:We consider a two-level atomic system interacting with an electromagnetic field controlled in amplitude and frequency by a high intensity laser. We show that the amplitude of the induced electric field admits an envelope profile corresponding to a breather soliton. We demonstrate that this soliton can propagate with any frequency shift with respect to that of the control laser, except a critical frequency, at which the system undergoes a structural discontinuity that transforms the breather in a rogue wave. A mechanism of generation of rogue waves by means of an intense laser field is thus revealed.

Abstract:The famous demonstration of optical rogue waves (RWs), a powerful tool to reveal the fundamental physics in different laser scenarios, opened a flourishing time for temporal statistics. Random fiber laser (RFL) has likewise attracted wide attention due to its great potential in multidisciplinary demonstrations and promising applications. However, owing to the distinctive cavity-free structure, it is a scientific challenge to achieve temporal localized RWs in RFLs, whose feedback arises from multiple scattering in disordered medium. Here, we report the exploration of RW in the highly skewed, transient intensity of an incoherently pumped RFL for the first time, to our knowledge, and unfold the involved kinetics successfully. The corresponding frequency domain measurements demonstrate that the RW event arises from a crucial sustained stimulated Brillouin scattering process with intrinsic stochastic nature. This investigation highlights a novel path to fully understanding the complex physics, such as photon propagation and localization, in disordered media.

Abstract:In addition to deep-water rogue waves which develop from the modulation instability of an optical CW, wave propagation in optical fibers may also produce shallow water rogue waves. These extreme wave events are generated in the modulationally stable normal dispersion regime. A suitable phase or frequency modulation of a CW laser leads to chirp-free and flat-top pulses or flaticons which exhibit a stable self-similar evolution. Upon collision, flaticons at different carrier frequencies, which may also occur in wavelength division multiplexed transmission systems, merge into a single, high-intensity, temporally and spatially localized rogue pulse.
