Abstract:The Daxi Vent Field (DVF) is located on a neovolcanic ridge within a non-transform offset at water depths of similar to 3500 m, on the Carlsberg Ridge, northwest Indian Ocean. In 2017, we investigated this site using the submersible Jiaolong and collected two fluid samples from orifices of chimneys named "Buddha's Hands" and "A1", about 37 m apart. Their in-situ measured temperatures are 273 degrees C and 272 degrees C, respectively. The Buddha's Hands fluid is highly Cl-enriched (928 mM), while the A1 fluid is Cl-depleted (303 mM). This indicates that they have undergone phase separation. The segregated phases must have remixed during the ascent because the vapor and brine phases sampled cannot be produced by the same phase separation history without other processes. Olivine-rich and/or ultramafic mantle rocks must have been involved during the hydrothermal circulation as evidenced by high dissolved H-2 (7.07 mM) and methane (0.884 mM) concentrations, a depletion in B relative to seawater, high Ca and low K, and large positive Eu anomalies. The Fe content in Buddha's Hands fluid is extremely high (11,900 mu M) as a result of phase separation, while the Cu concentrations in both fluids are relatively low due to entrainment of seawater which results in precipitation of Cu-rich sulfides in the subseafloor. The concentrations of Zn, Ag, Ga, Sn, Sb, and Cd in A1 vent fluid are significantly elevated due to generation of acidity and remobilization of these elements as Cu-rich sulfides are deposited. The subseafloor processes and associated geochemistry of hydrothermal fluids at the DVF are distinct from other mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal systems due to the specific geologic setting. Hence a hybrid model of hydrothermal circulation is proposed. This study broadens our understanding of the hydrothermal processes occurring in areas of NTO setting and provides more information on mass fluxes discharging from hydrothermal systems and the formation of sulfide deposits.

Abstract:Chemical geodynamics,the hotspot and the forefront of mantle geochemistry in the past decade,is an interdiscipline subject of geochemistry and geodynamics.With advances in understanding the mechanism of slab-mantle interaction and its geochemical effects,the study of chemical geodynamics has been extended from the mantle heterogeneity itself to the geochemical effects of subducted slabs on the mantle composition.Such an extension has contributed greatly to our understanding of many important issues in solid earth chemistry,especially the operation of Earth's interior,the slab-mantle interaction in subduction zones,and the spatial-temporal scale of mantle heterogeneity.In this paper,we have systematically reviewed remarkable progresses in the following issues: the origin of oceanic basalts and the recycling of crustal materials,the petrology of mantle sources for oceanic basalts,the slab-mantle interaction and its bearing on the origin of oceanic basalts and continental mafic-ultramafic rocks,and granite petrogenesis and continental dynamics.We have also raised important questions in the study of chemical geodynamics,and presented our personal perspectives on future studies.

Abstract:The composition of continental subduction-zone fluids varies dramatically from dilute aqueous solutions at subsolidus conditions to hydrous silicate melts at supersolidus conditions, with variable concentrations of fluid-mobile incompatible trace elements. At ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic conditions, supercritical fluids may occur with variable compositions. The water component of these fluids primarily derives from structural hydroxyl and molecular water in hydrous and nominally anhydrous minerals at UHP conditions. While the breakdown of hydrous minerals is the predominant water source for fluid activity in the subduction factory, water released from nominally anhydrous minerals provides an additional water source. These different sources of water may accumulate to induce partial melting of UHP metamorphic rocks on and above their wet solidii. Silica is the dominant solute in the deep fluids, followed by aluminum and alkalis. Trace element abundances are low in metamorphic fluids at subsolidus conditions, but become significantly elevated in anatectic melts at supersolidus conditions. The compositions of dissolved and residual minerals are a function of pressure-temperature and whole-rock composition, which exert a strong control on the trace element signature of liberated fluids. The trace element patterns of migmatic leucosomes in UHP rocks and multiphase solid inclusions in UHP minerals exhibit strong enrichment of large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and moderate enrichment of light rare earth elements (LREE) but depletion of high field strength elements (HFSE) and heavy rare earth elements (HREE), demonstrating their crystallization from anatectic melts of crustal protoliths. Interaction of the anatectic melts with the mantle wedge peridotite leads to modal metasomatism with the generation of new mineral phases as well as cryptic metasomatism that is only manifested by the enrichment of fluid-mobile incompatible trace elements in orogenic peridotites. Partial melting of the metasomatic mantle domains gives rise to a variety of mafic igneous rocks in collisional orogens and their adjacent active continental margins. The study of such metasomatic processes and products is of great importance to understanding of the mass transfer at the slab-mantle interface in subduction channels. Therefore, the property and behavior of subduction-zone fluids are a key for understanding of the crust-mantle interaction at convergent plate margins.
Fluid/Melt in Continental Deep Subduction Zones: Compositions and Related Geochemical Fractionations

Abstract:Plate subduction is the most magnificent process in the Earth. Subduction zones are important sites for proceeding matter- and energy- transports between the Earth's surface and the interior, continental crust growth, and crust-mantle interactions. Besides, a number of geological processes in subduction zones are closely related to human beings' daily life, such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, formation of mineral deposits. Subduction process thus has long been the centric topic of Earth sciences. The finding in 1980s that continental crust could be subducted to mantle depths is a revolutionary progress in plate tectonic theory. Compared to oceanic crust, continental crust is colder, drier, lighter, and much more geochemically/isotopically heterogeneous Hence, continental subduction process would affect the structure, compositions and evolutions of the overlying mantle wedge even more. During continental subduction and subsequent exhumation, fluids and melts can be generated in the (de)hydration process and partial melting process, respectively. These melts/fluids play important roles in crust-mantle interactions, elemental migrations, isotopic fractionations, and mantle metasomatism. By summarizing recent research works on subduction zones in this paper, we present a review on the types, physicochemical conditions and compositions of fluids/melts, as well as the migration behaviors of fluid-related characteristic elements (Nb-Ta-V) and the fractionation behaviors of non-traditional stable isotopes (Li-Mg) in subduction zones. The aim of this paper is to provide the readers an update comprehensive overview of the melt/fluid activities in subduction zones and of Li-Mg isotope systematics in subduction-related rocks and minerals.

Abstract:Based on brief summary of major progresses achieved in mantle geochemistry in the first decade of the 21th century,this article presents an overview on the research progresses in related fields within China.It includes the research approaches related to the upper mantle of the Earth,studies on subcontinental lithospheric mantle,mantle metasomatism and fluids/melts,the existence and significance of water in the upper mantle,the application of non-traditional stable isotopes,such as Li,Mg and Fe,application of Re-Os isotope system and database in mantle geochemical studies.Meanwhile,the outlook for the next decade is also prospected by the authors.
On the fO2 of slab fluids in subduction zone systems

Abstract:One of the most pressing riddles of the subduction cycle to be solved is linked to the fO2 of the slab-released fluids. It is now well accepted that the fluids liberated during slab dehydration play a crucial role in subduction zone seismicity, element cycling, and arc magmatism. However, whether these slab fluids are oxidizing or reducing transport agents is poorly understood and thus, there is still a lot we need to understand. This is of particular importance for gaining a mechanistic view on the formation processes of economically important arc related ore deposits, which certainly require understanding of the behavior of redox sensitive mobilities of the relevant elements. In brief, while some field-based studies from the slab perspective are suggesting rather reduced conditions (e.g., based on sulfides and sulfur isotope work, ref. 1) others, mainly related to higher temperature systems (e.g., based on bulk-rock &#8211; rutile systems and molybdenum isotope work, ref. 2), are indicative of more oxidizing slab fluids. Especially for m&#233;lange-like structures developed at the plate interface, studies on sulfur-bearing minerals result in contrasting fO2 of the related slab fluids (ref. 3 vs ref. 4). It appears that at least during retrogression along the plate interface the reactively flowing fluids tend to have a more oxidizing potential (ref. 5). Interestingly, the prime fluid source of subducting slabs, i.e. dehydrating slab mantle serpentinites, is thought to release reduced fluids (ref. 6) but melt inclusions in arc volcanic rocks are often oxidized. Recent studies suggest that this is likely linked to fluid-rock interaction at local scales (ref. 7) and/or possibly within the magma reservoirs that comprise rather low-melt-fraction mush (ref. 8). This in turn would suggest that the slab fluids might change their fO2 during reactive intra-slab fluid flow, or would not need to be oxidized prior to melt inclusion entrapment and that the oxidizing potential of the fluids may be the result of magmatic processes during melt ascent in the arc. Subduction zone sulfur mobilization and redistribution by intraslab fluid–rock interaction

Abstract:Subduction zones mediate the sulfur exchange between Earth's interior and surface, and play a critical role in the long-term global sulfur cycle. Dehydration of the subducted slab releases aqueous fluids, which in turn interact with the surrounding wall-rocks during reactive flow through the slab. Fluids are regarded as the key agent for sulfur transfer within the slab and subsequently into the mantle wedge. However, the mechanisms underlying sulfur mobilization and redistribution during fluid-rock interaction are not fully understood. Here, we investigate three high-pressure blueschist/eclogite–selvage–vein systems from the Southwestern Tianshan metamorphic belt in northwestern China to explore sulfur behavior during fluid-rock interaction along channelized fluid pathways and within their alteration halos. Petrologic observations on mineral parageneses and ẟ34S compositions of sulfides reveal two different scenarios of sulfur mobilization and redistribution during fluid-rock interaction at HP conditions. Fe-rich and medium-fS2 (near the pyrite–pyrrhotite buffer) fluids favor pyrrhotite stability over pyrite and can trigger the pyrite–to–pyrrhotite transition in the reaction halo. In this case the bulk-rock sulfur budget may not vary but the sulfur isotope exchange is still effective, producing a ẟ34S mixing trend in the metasomatic zones. In contrast, Fe-poor and high-fS2 fluids cause conversion of pyrrhotite to pyrite, significant sulfur addition, and sulfur isotope exchange in alteration selvages. Medium-fS2 fluids can transport sulfur and thus are effective in transferring sulfur out of the slab, whereas high-fS2 fluids cause sulfur sequestration along fluid pathways and considerably reduce long-distance sulfur transfer. Multiple fluid infiltration events with different fluid sources result in several pyrite overgrowth sequences, recorded by contrasting Co–Ni element distributions and in-situ δ34S zoning of pyrite. The heaviest δ34S value (+25‰) thus far reported in HP rocks has been found in vein pyrite, suggesting that a seawater sulfate-derived δ34S signature can be transported to great depths in a subduction zone, even though the timing and mechanism of sulfate–to–sulfide reduction in the subduction zone remain unconstrained. Our study provides natural evidence for fluid-mediated sulfide transformation, sulfur transport/storage, and sulfur isotope exchange during fluid-rock interaction, and illuminates the role these processes play in sulfur release from the subducting slab and sulfur subduction into the deep mantle.

The chemical behavior of fluids released during deep subduction based on fluid inclusions

Abstract:This review combines fluid inclusion data from (HP-)UHP rocks with experimental research and thermodynamic models to investigate the chemical and physical properties of fluids released during deep subduction, their solvent and element transport capacity, and the subsequent implications for the element recycling in the mantle wedge. An impressive number of fluid inclusion studies indicate three main populations of fluid inclusions in HP and UHP metamorphic rocks: (1) aqueous and/or non-polar gaseous fluid inclusions (FI); (2) multiphase solid inclusions (MSI); and (3) melt inclusions (MI). Chemical data from preserved fluid inclusions in rocks match with and implement “model” fluids by experiments and thermodynamics, revealing a continuity behind the extreme variations of physico-chemical properties of subduction-zone fluids. From fore-arc to sub-arc depths, fluids released by progressive devolatilization reactions from slab lithologies change from relatively diluted chloridebearing aqueous solutions (±N2), mainly influenced by halide ligands, to (alkali) aluminosilicate-rich aqueous fluids, in which polymerization probably governs the solubility and transport of major (e.g., Si and Al) and trace elements (including C). Fluid inclusion studies point to a reconsideration of the petrological models explaining deep volatile liberation, and their flux into the mantle wedge.

Recent progresses in plate subduction and element recycling

Abstract:New findings on behaviours of elements and the recycling of a variety of volatile components during plate subduction have been made by the Strategic Priority Research Program (B) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. CeHeO fluids show unexpected immiscibility at subduction zone conditions. First principles simulations reveal that high temperature greatly enhances the tendency of calcium partitioning into silicates, which implies that CaCO3 is unlikely to be the major carbon host in Earth's deep mantle. By integrating the results from this research program and the knowledge from previous studies, a unified picture of the global deep volatile cycle is provided. Carbon is the most important element on Earth, which is the core element of life. It has major influences not only on the climate change, but also on magmatic activities. The Earth's carbon is mainly stored in the mantle and the core in its reduced form such as diamond, graphite and carbide. Based on first-principle calculations and, high pressure experiments and geophysical results so far published, it is suggested that there should be a layer of "carbonate mantle peridotite" at the bottom of the upper mantle. The carbonatized layer may have acted as the source of severe climate fluctuations and mass extinction on the Earth. These progresses provide us a better understanding on the interactions between the Earth's interior and surface through plate subduction and mantle plume. Fluid Regime in Continental Subduction Zones: Petrological Insights from Ultrahigh-Pressure Metamorphic Rocks

Abstract:Intensive studies of ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic rocks in continental collision zones have provided petrological insights into the fluid regime during subduction and exhumation. Recent studies in the Dabie-Sulu orogen of China have made important contributions to understanding fluid action in such systems, hence these rocks are the main focus of this review. Sources of metamorphic fluid can be deduced from study of hydrous minerals, structural hydroxyl and molecular water in nominally anhydrous minerals. Fluid and solid inclusions of UHP metamorphic minerals are also a record of fluid action in deep subduction zones. The presence or absence of metamorphic fluid during subduction and exhumation dictates zircon growth and recrystallization, making available materials for U-Pb dating. Isotopic dating demonstrates that after peak UHP metamorphism, retrograde fluid with deuteric origin became active. The decomposition of hydrous minerals and the exsolution of molecular water and structural hydroxyl during exhumation can provide sufficient amounts of aqueous fluid for quartz veining and amphibolite-facies retrogression within UHP slabs. Aqueous fluid released by the exsolution of molecular water and structural hydroxyl from UHP nominally anhydrous minerals is characterized by low salinity and light hydrogen and oxygen isotope compositions, Therefore, one part of the UHP slab is a source of aqueous fluid, whereas another part is a sink. In both cases, the fluid action during subduction and exhumation is episodic rather than continuous.
Serpentinite-derived Low Δ7li Fluids in Continental Subduction Zones: Constraints from the Fluid Metasomatic Rocks (whiteschist) from the Dora-Maira Massif, Western Alps

Abstract:Whole rock lithium (Li) and Li isotopic compositions of coesite-bearing whiteschists and their country rock metagranites from the Dora-Maira Massif in the Western Alps were investigated to understand their behavior during fluid-rock interaction in mantle depths of continental subduction zones. The whiteschists reveal relatively low delta Li-7 values (-6.4 parts per thousand to +2.4 parts per thousand, with an average value of -2.1 parts per thousand) in comparison to the country rock metagranites (delta Li-7 = -1.2 parts per thousand to +3.6 parts per thousand, with an average value of +1.4 parts per thousand). The delta Li-7 values of whiteschists do not show any correlations with major elements (e.g. Mg, Fe), Li, or isotopes (i.e., delta Mg-26 and delta O-18 values) and cannot be explained by kinetic fractionation. Hence, the low delta Li-7 values of whiteschists result from interactions with metasomatic fluids containing isotopically light Li that occurred in deep portions of a continental subduction zone. Fluid-rock interaction modeling suggests that the metasomatic fluids contain low delta Li-7 values (down to -4 parts per thousand) and moderate Li concentrations (50 to 150 ppm), which were probably derived from the dehydration of serpentinites in the subduction channel. The presence of such low delta Li-7 fluids in deep subduction zones could cause Li isotopic heterogeneity in the earth's interior. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Chemical geodynamics is an integrated discipline that studies the geochemical structure and tectonic evolution of geospheres with the aim of linking tectonic processes to geochemical products in the Earth system. It was primarily focused on mantle geochemistry, with an emphasis on geochemical recycling in oceanic subduction zones. It has been extended to geochemical reworking and recycling under high-pressure (HP) to ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) conditions in all convergent plate margins. In particular, UHP terranes, along with UHP metamorphic minerals and rocks in continental subduction zones, represent natural laboratories for investigating geochemical transport and fluid action during subduction and exhumation of continental crust. As a result of this extension, the study of UHP terranes has significantly advanced our understanding of tectonic processes in collisional orogens. This understanding has principally benefited from the deciphering of petrological and geochemical records in deeply subducted crustal rocks that occur in different petrotectonic settings. This review focuses on the following issues in continental subduction zones: the time and duration of UHP metamorphism, the origin and action of metamorphic fluid/melt inside UHP slices, the element and isotope mobilities under HP to UHP conditions during continental collision, the origin of premetamorphic protoliths and its bearing on continental collision types, and the crustal detachment and crust–mantle interaction in subduction channels. The synthesis presented herein suggests that the nature of premetamorphic protoliths is a key to the type of collisional orogens and the size of UHP terranes. The source mixing in subduction channels is a basic mechanism responsible for the geochemical diversity of continental and oceanic basaltic rocks. Therefore, the geochemical study of HP to UHP metamorphic rocks and their derivatives has greatly facilitated our understanding of the geodynamic processes that drive the tectonic evolution of convergent plate margins from oceanic subduction to continental collision. Consequently, the study of chemical geodynamics has been developed from oceanic subduction zones to continental collision zones, and it has enabled important contributions to development of plate tectonic theory.
Research Advances in Experimental Petrology and Geochemistry of Rare Earth Elements in Magmatic and Hydrothermal Systems

Abstract:With the development of new technologies and the increasing demands for rare earth elements (REEs) around the world, the metallogenic mechanism of rare earth deposits has become an international research hotspot. High-temperature and high-pressure experiments on the distribution behavior of rare earth elements can provide effective constraints for studying the migration, differentiation, and deposition mechanisms of rare earth elements in the magmatic and hydrothermal systems. The experiment results provide an important theoretical basis for the understanding of geochemical behavior of rare earth elements and the mineralization processes in the REE deposits. In this paper, we summarize the recent high-temperature and high-pressure experimental knowledge advances in the distribution behavior of rare earth elements in the magmatic and hydrothermal systems, including partial melting, liquid-liquid immiscibility, fractional crystallization, fluid-melt partitioning, as well as the migration, differentiation and precipitation mechanism of rare earth elements in the hydrothermal fluids. Finally, future work that enhances our understanding of rare earth elements migration and deposition mechanisms in magmatic and hydrothermal systems are briefly proposed.
Tracking Fe Mobility and Fe Speciation in Subduction Zone Fluids at the Slab-Mantle Interface in a Subduction Channel: A Tale of Whiteschist from the Western Alps

Abstract:Fluids released by subducting slabs are important to the geochemical evolution of Earth’s crust-mantle system. However, it is still not well constrained for the mobility of redox sensitive elements (like Fe, C or S) in subduction zone fluids, and its effect on the redox property of the overlying mantle wedge and its derived arc magmas. Iron isotope fractionation is sensitive to the redox state and speciation of Fe in fluids, which can potentially provide clues on the oxygen fugacity (fO2) of slab-derived fluids. Whiteschists at the Dora-Maira Massif in the Western Alps have experienced ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism at subarc depths. They are rich in both SiO2 (mostly >65 wt.%) and MgO (4–10 wt.%), and mainly composed of pyrope, quartz/coesite, talc, phengite and kyanite. They were demonstrated to have a granite protolith, but metasomatized by serpentinite-derived Mg-rich fluids at the slab-mantle interface in a subduction channel. Thus these rocks provide an excellent target to explore the fluid-rock interaction by Fe isotopes. The whiteschists show extremely high δ56Fe values of +0.32 to +1.22‰, being much higher than those of +0.10 to +0.38‰ for the surrounding metagranites. The Fe isotope composition of whiteschists significantly deviates from the igneous differentiation trend defined by rocks with basaltic to rhyolitic compositions. The heavy Fe isotope compositions must be produced by a metasomatic process. The much lower Fe2O3 and FeOt contents and Fe3+/∑Fe ratios but higher δ56Fe values for the whiteschists relative to their protolith suggest the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ and the loss of isotopically light Fe, probably in the form of Fe(II)-Cl and/or Fe(II)-(HS) complexes, through saline fluids and/or HS- bearing fluids. The reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ and the possible presence of HS- suggests the occurrence of relatively reduced fluids. Such reduced fluids were probably derived from serpentinite dehydration at the slab-mantle interface in the subduction channel. Therefore, the Fe isotope results demonstrate that the fO2 at the slab-mantle interface can be locally highly heterogeneous, leading to various oxidation states in the mantle wedge and arc magmas.
Lithium Isotopic Geochemistry in Subduction Zones: Retrospects and Prospects

Abstract:Subduction zones involve many complex geological processes, including the release of slab‐derived fluids, fluid/rock interactions, partial melting, isotopic fractionations, elemental transporting, and crust/mantle interactions. Lithium (Li) isotopes ( 6 Li and 7 Li) have relative mass difference up to 16%, being the largest among metal elements. Thus, Li isotopes have advantage to interprete trace various geological processes. Most importantly, during crust/mantle interactions in deep subduction zones, surface materials and mantle rocks usually have distinct Li isotopic compositions. Li isotopes can be potential tracer for subduction processes, from the onset of subduction to the release of Li from subducted slabs and interaction with mantle wedge, as well as the fate of Li in slab‐derived fluids and residual slabs. Moreover, the Li isotopic composition of subducting output materials can provide useful information for understanding global Li circulation. With developments in measurement and expansion of Li isotopic database, Li isotopic geochemistry will provide more inference and be a powerful tracer for understanding subduction‐related processes. This work retrospected the application of Li isotopes in tracing successive subduction processes, and made some prospects for further studies of Li isotopes.

Abstract:The study of continental deep subduction has been the forefront and the hotspot of solid earth sciences since findings of coesite and diamond in metamorphic rocks of supracrustal origin.Identification of ultrahigh-pressure(UHP) metamorphic rocks in continental subduction zones led to the revolution of the plate tectonic theory,remarkably promoting the study of continental geodynamics.In the past three decades,the study of continental deep subduction has made great achievements,especially on the depth of continental subduction,p-T-t path reconstruction during continental subduction and exhumation,fluid regime and element mobility during continental collision,geochronology and isotope tracing in continental subduction zones,geothermometry of UHP rocks,slab-mantle interaction in continental subduction channels,and driving force for continental deep subduction and exhumation.Such achievements have greatly expanded the research areas of continental geodynamics,developed the plate tectonics theory,and deepened the understanding of the operation of Earth's interior.In this paper,we have reviewed the studies of continental deep subduction and UHP metamorphism in the past 30 years,and highlighted the classic studies and the newest,exciting developments.We have also raised important questions in the study of continental deep subduction,and given possible perspectives on future studies.

Abstract:Based on the updated results of experimental petrology and phase equilibria modelling and combined with the available thermal structure models of subduction zones, this paper presents an overview on the dehydration and melting of basic, sedimentary and ultrabasic rocks that occur in the different stages during oceanic subduction processes and their influences on magmatism above subduction zones. During the subduction at the forearc depth of <90–100 km, the basic and ultrabasic rocks from most oceanic slabs can release very small amounts of water, and significant dehydration may occur in the slab superficial sediments. Strong dehydration occurs in both basic and ultrabasic rocks during subduction at the subarc depth of 90–200 km. For example, more than 90% water in basic rocks is released by the successive dehydration of chlorite, glaucophane, talc and lawsonite in the subarc depths. This is diversely in contrast to the previous results from synthetic experiments. Ultrabasic rocks may undergo strong dehydration through antigorite, chlorite and phase 10 Å at the subarc depth of 120–220 km. However, sediments can contribute minor fluids at the subarc depth, one main hydrous mineral in which is phengite (muscovite). It can stabilize to ∼300 km depth and transform into K-hollandite. After phengite breaks down, there will be no significant fluid release from oceanic slab until it is subducted to the mantle transition zone. In a few hot subduction zones, partial melting (especially flux melting) can occur in both sediments and basic rocks, generating hydrous granitic melts or supercritical fluids, and in carbonates-bearing sediments potassic carbonatite melts can be generated. In a few cold subduction zones, phase A occurs in ultrabasic rocks, which can bring water deep into the transition zone. The subducted rocks, especially the sediments, contain large quantities of incompatible minor and trace elements carried through fluids to greatly influence the geochemical compositions of the magma in subduction zones. As the geothermal gradients of subduction zones cannot cross the solidi of carbonated eclogite and peridotite during the subarc subduction stage, the carbonate minerals in them can be carried into the deep mantle. Carbonated eclogite can melt to generate alkali-rich carbonatite melts at >400 km depth, while carbonated peridotite will not melt in the mantle transition zone below a subduction zone.
