Abstract:Abandoned plastics have become a serious hazard to environment and ecology both on earth and in oceans, among of them, waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) accounts for up to 13.9 % of all waste plastics. Recycling of these hazardous materials has attracted the attention of many scientists. In this work, an efficient catalytic upcycling strategy of waste PET to dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) was performed over environmental friendly TixSi1-xO2 solid acid. Characterizations disclosed that Lewis acid sites in TixSi1-xO2 catalysts were extremely active for the alcoholysis of PET with methanol under mild conditions. In particular, the yield of DMT over Ti0.5Si0.5O2 (2.5 wt% of added PET) achieved 98.2 % with a complete degradation of PET in 2 h at 160 °C. And Ti0.5Si0.5O2 could be recycled at least five times without obvious loss of activity. The best specific activity of each acid site in Ti0.5Si0.5O2 reached 708.3 h-1, and it was also capable of the upcycling of waste bottles and polyester yarn. The degradation mechanism of PET over Ti0.5Si0.5O2 was validated via matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry, scanning electron microscope and gel permeation chromatography. The Ti0.5Si0.5O2 catalyzed alcoholysis method provides a green pathway for the upcycling of waste PET.

Mechanistic Understanding of Efficient Polyethylene Hydrocracking over Two-Dimensional Platinum-Anchored Tungsten Trioxide.

Abstract:Chemical upcycling of polyethylene (PE) can convert plastic waste into valuable resources. However, engineering a catalyst that allows PE decomposition at low temperatures with high activity remains a significant challenge. Herein, we anchored 0.2 wt.% platinum (Pt) on defective two-dimensional tungsten trioxide (2D WO3) nanosheets and achieved hydrocracking of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) waste at 200-250 °C with a liquid fuel (C5-18) formation rate up to 1456 gproducts∙gmetal species-1∙h-1. The reaction pathway over the bifunctional 2D Pt/WO3 is elucidated by quasi-operando transmission infrared spectroscopy, where (I) well-dispersed Pt immobilized on 2D WO3 nanosheet triggers the dissociation of hydrogen; (II) adsorption of PE and activation of C-C cleavage on WO3 are through the formation of C=O/C=C intermediates; (III) intermediates are converted to alkane products by the dissociated H. Our study directly illustrates the synergistic role of bifunctional Pt/WO3 catalyst in the hydrocracking of HDPE, paving the way for the development of high-performance catalysts with the optimized chemical and morphological properties.
Rapid Chemical Recycling of Waste Polyester Plastics Catalyzed by Recyclable Catalyst

Abstract:Waste plastics are serious environmental threats due to their low degradability and low recycling rate. Rapid and efficient waste plastics recycling technologies are urgently demanded for a sustainable future. Herein, we report a rapid, closed-loop, and streamlined process to convert polyesters such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) back to its purified monomers. Using trifluoromethanesulfonic acid or metal triflates as the recyclable catalyst, polyesters such as PET can be completely depolymerized by simple carboxylic acids within 1 h. By coupling this acidolysis with a subsequent hydrogenolysis process, the consumed carboxylic acid was recovered and the closed-loop of PET depolymerization could be established. All catalysts and depolymerization agents are fully recycled while only PET and hydrogen are consumed.

It not only upcycles waste PET but also eliminates intricate EG purification processes. Catalyzed by magnalium-aluminum-layered double oxides (Mg 4 Al 1 -LDO), this method achieved 100% conversions of PET with 96% and 100% yields of arylboronic esters and DMT, respectively. Kinetic studies and in-situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) demonstrated the pivotal role of the monodentate methoxy species, generated through the interaction of medium basic Mg–O ion pairs and methanol. This method demonstrates applicability for the upcycling of assorted discarded PET wastes, polyesters, and polycarbonates with EG units, highlighting its potential as a comprehensive solution for waste plastic management.

Copper-supported catalysts for sustainable PET depolymerization: a cost-effective approach towards dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) production

Abstract:Chemical upgrading as a recycling technology for poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste plastic is an effective way to help solve the current challenges of plastic pollution. Catalytic methanolysis technology enables the depolymerization of PET into high-value dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) monomers under relatively mild conditions, thereby achieving closed-loop recycling of PET waste plastic. In this study, we compared the catalytic efficiency of Cu/SiO 2 catalysts prepared by three different methods for the depolymerization of PET to DMT. Cu/SiO 2 -IM, prepared through the impregnation method, exhibited the highest activity, with PET conversion and DMT selectivity reaching 92.35% and 99.0%, respectively, at 200 °C without any initial gas pressure. The exceptional performance of Cu/SiO 2 -IM can be attributed to its small metal particles, substantial specific surface area, a high ratio of Brønsted acid sites (BAS) to Lewis acid sites (LAS) and the balance of Cu + and Cu 0 active sites on the catalytic surface. Furthermore, possible reaction mechanisms of Cu-based catalysts in the catalytic methanolysis of PET were investigated: Cu + initiates the attack on the carbon groups along the long PET chain and enhances the nucleophilic attack during the depolymerization reaction, while Cu 0 readily interacts with the hydroxyl group of methanol, leading to the formation of a new ester group between the oxygen atom in the hydroxyl group of methanol and the carbon atom in the CO group of PET polyester. This low-cost and high-efficiency catalytic methanolysis study provides a practical approach to PET waste plastic recycling.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel approach of utilizing methanol (CH3OH) for both the methanolysis of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to form dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) at near-quantitative yields (~97%) and catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis (CTH) of DMT to p-xylene (PX, ~63% at 240 °C and 16 h) on a reducible ZnZrOx supported Cu catalyst (i.e., Cu/ZnZrOx). Pre- and post-reaction surface and bulk characterization, along with density functional theory (DFT) computations, explicate the role of the metal-support interface of Cu/ZnZrOx in providing active sites for the activation of both CH3OH and DMT and facilitating a lower free-energy pathway for both CH3OH dehydrogenation and DMT hydrogenolysis, compared to Cu supported on redox-neutral SiO2 support. DFT calculations further reveal that the rate-determining step for CTH of DMT is the cleavage of the C-O linkages in –(C=O)-OR) of DMT. Loading studies and thermodynamic calculations showed that, under reaction conditions, CH3OH in the gas phase, rather than in the liquid phase, is critical for CTH of DMT. Interestingly, the Cu/ZnZrOx catalyst was also effective for the methanolysis and hydrogenolysis of C-C bonds (compared to C-O bonds for PET) of waste polycarbonate (PC), largely forming xylenol (~38%) and methyl isopropyl anisole (~42%) demonstrating the versatility of this approach toward valorizing a wide range of condensation polymers.

Abstract:The synthesis of 2, 4-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane through the acetalization of isobutyraldehyde with 2, 2, 4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) catalyzed by the novel carbon based acid was first carried out. High conversion (≥98%) and specific selectivity were obtained using the novel carbon based acid, which kept high activity after it was reused 5 times. Moreover, the catalyst could be used to catalyze the acetalization and ketalization of different aldehydes and ketones with superior yield. The yield of several products was over 90%. The novel heterogeneous catalyst has the distinct advantages of high activity, strikingly simple workup procedure, non-pollution, and reusability, which will contribute to the success of the green process greatly.
Acid-modified, Ti3C2-based MXene as catalysts for up-cycling polyethylene terephthalate

Abstract:Plastics are indispensable materials for packaging and many products from our daily life and their recycling is essential to ensure a circular economy. In this study, −SO3H modified-MXene, Ti3C2, was used as a recoverable solid acid catalyst for up-cycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to terephthalic acid (TPA) and ethylene glycol (EG) by hydrolysis. For the addition of −SO3H groups to the Ti3C2Tx surface (where Tx represents the surface moieties such as -OH or -O), sulfonation with an aryl diazonium salt obtained from sulfanilic acid was employed. X-ray photoelectron and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies analyses provided a direct indication that sulfonation of the Ti3C2Tx was successfully performed, while X-ray diffraction and Transmission electron microscopy analyses evidence the presence of −SO3H groups in between the layers of Ti3C2Tx due to the increases of the interlayer spacing through the intercalation of functional groups. The higher the concentration of acid groups, the higher the interlayer spacing. The depolymerisation of PET in water occurred with a very good isolated yield in TPA (99%) for the MXene with the highest amount of sulfonic acid groups. We can conclude that the acidity is mandatory to perform the hydrolysis reaction, in agreement with the acidity measurements, which shows that the MXene modified with the highest amount of derived sulfonic acids contains the highest amount of acidity. Nevertheless, the accessibility to the acidic sites is a key factor that promotes the 2D acid-modified MXene materials as important catalysts for PET up-cycling to TPA.

Abstract:Upcycling waste plastic into aromatics presents an attractive strategy to tackle both plastic pollution and energy challenges. However, previous studies often rely on high temperatures, precious metals, and have broad product distributions. In this study, we reported that a Ni/ZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst can directly convert polyethylene (PE) into methylated aromatics with high selectivity under mild conditions, while eliminating the requirement for hydrogen gas and solvents. The liquid yield could attain up to 70.3 %, and the aromatics yield could achieve up to 51.7 %. Over 78.4 % of the aromatics were methylated aromatics including toluene, xylene, and mesitylene. Polymer chains underwent dehydrogenation over Ni and the acid sites in ZSM-5, forming CC bonds. Certain of these bonds evolved into carbenium ions through the process of proton transfer at the acid sites. The optimization of Ni and acid sites enhanced the oligomerization, cyclization, and aromatization process. The extra mesopores created by Ni on the molecular sieve aid in the generation of aromatics. Furthermore, the Ni/ZSM-5 catalyst demonstrated the ability to convert typical commercial grades of PE plastic, such as gloves and bottles, into aromatics with a selectivity of up to 61.1 %. It offers an economically feasible and environmentally friendly upcycling avenue for the circular economy of plastics.
Optimization of TiO(acac) 2 for efficient catalytic alcoholysis of waste PET using response surface methodology

Abstract:Acetylacetone titanium oxide (TiO(acac) 2 ) was synthesized from acetylacetone and isopropyl titanate via a one-pot method. The catalyst's structure and morphology were characterized and analyzed using FT-IR, UV–vis, XRD, SEM, and laser particle size analysis. The prepared acetylacetone titanium oxide was used for the alcoholysis reaction of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and the yield of bis(hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) obtained from the alcoholysis reaction was taken as the index. The optimal conditions for the alcoholysis reaction were determined using response surface methodology: 3 g of PET, a catalyst dosage of 0.467%, a temperature of 200.5 °C, a time of 3.77 h, and 13.50 mL of ethylene glycol, with a BHET yield of 96.41%. The model had good reliability. Finally, the reaction mechanism was speculated, and the catalyst was compared with other catalysts. The TiO(acac) 2 catalyst has a good application prospect.

Abstract:The application of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) in the catalytic degradation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has attracted increasing attention due to the high efficiency, biodegradability, and low toxicity of DESs. How-ever, the relationship between the structure and activity of DESs is still ambiguous. Herein, we report an efficient 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]decium acetate/zinc acetate (HTBD-OAc/Zn(OAc)(2)) DES catalyst for recycling waste PET based on a combination of experimental and theoretical studies. First, the HTBD-OAc/Zn(OAc)(2) DES structure, in which the HTBD-OAc moiety and Zn(OAc)(2) were connected through a N-H-O hydrogen bonding interaction, was clearly determined through theoretical calculations and experimental verification. Then, the HTBD-OAc/Zn(OAc)(2) was found to be effective for waste PET glycolysis, where the PET conversion reached 100%, and the bis(hydroxyalkyl) terephthalate (BHET) yield reached 88.5% at 190 C within 40 min in atmosphere. Additionally, the catalyst had high reuse performance; BHET yield remained 84.6% after the catalyst was used for over seven cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the PET glycolysis reaction mediated by the HTBD-OAc/Zn(OAc)(2) DES included two stages, and the 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]decium cation (HTBD) played a crucial role. In the first stage, the active species [Zn]-OCH2CH2OH anion was generated through proton transfer from HTBD to OAc-, which was followed by HOCH2CH2O-H bond activation through the cooperation of HTBD and Zn. In the second stage, catalytic depolymerization of PET occurred through the cooperative functions of the Zn center and HOCH2CH2O- anion ligand.
Selective Upcycling of Polyethylene Terephthalate towards High‐valued Oxygenated Chemical Methyl p‐Methyl Benzoate using a Cu/ZrO2 Catalyst

Abstract:Upgrading of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste into valuable oxygenated molecules is a fascinating process, yet it remains challenging. Herein, we developed a two-step strategy involving methanolysis of PET to dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), followed by hydrogenation of DMT to produce the high-valued chemical methyl p-methyl benzoate (MMB) using a fixed-bed reactor and a Cu/ZrO2 catalyst. Interestingly, we discovered the phase structure of ZrO2 significantly regulates the selectivity of products. Cu supported on monoclinic ZrO2 (5%Cu/m-ZrO2) exhibits an exceptional selectivity of 86% for conversion of DMT to MMB, while Cu supported on tetragonal ZrO2 (5%Cu/t-ZrO2) predominantly produces p-xylene (PX) with selectivity of 75%. The superior selectivity of MMB over Cu/m-ZrO2 can be attributed to the weaker acid sites present on m-ZrO2 compared to t-ZrO2. This weak acidity of m-ZrO2 leads to a moderate adsorption capability of MMB, and facilitating its desorption. Furthermore, DFT calculations reveal Cu/m-ZrO2 catalyst shows a higher effective energy barrier for cleavage of second C–O bond compared to Cu/t-ZrO2 catalyst; this distinction ensures the high selectivity of MMB. This catalyst not only presents an approach for upgrading of PET waste into fine chemicals but also offers a strategy for controlling the primary product in a multistep hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:Waste plastics accumulation, such as commonly used polyethylene terephthalate (PET), has caused serious environmental pollution and resource squander. Glycolysis is a reliable closed‐loop PET recycling method, which limited by the high cost and complex catalysts preparation processes. Here we report a simple synergistic catalytic strategy by premixing zinc acetate and cheap alkalis in ethylene glycol, which could achieve complete glycolysis at 180 °C within 2 hours, and a bis(hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) yield of 86.4%. This may be attributed to the free hydroxide ions not only enhancing the nucleophilicity of oxygen in ethylene glycol and making it easy to attack carbonyl groups, but also accelerating the swelling and dissolution of PET. Meanwhile, the in‐situ generated Zn‐glycolate and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) activated the oxygen in the carbonyl group, making the carbon cations more electropositive. Further recycling experiments and techno‐economic analysis indicated that our synergistic strategy significantly reduced industrial costs and expected to achieve large‐scale industrial applications.

Abstract:Plastic pollution is an emerging global threat due to lack of effective methods for transforming waste plastics into useful resources. Here, we demonstrate a direct oxidative upcycling of polyethylene into high-value and high-volume long chain (C10-C20) saturated dicarboxylic acids in high carbon yield of 85.9% over cobalt-doped MCM-41 molecular sieves, in the absence of any solvent or precious metal catalyst. The distribution of the dicarboxylic acids can be controllably adjusted from short-chain (C4-C10) to long-chain ones (C10-C20) through changing cobalt loading of MCM-41 under nanoconfinement. Highly and sparsely dispersed cobalt along with confined space of mesoporous structure enables complete degradation of polyethylene and high selectivity of dicarboxylic acid in mild condition. So far, this is the first report on highly selective one-step preparation of long chain dicarboxylic acids. The approach provides an attractive solution to tackle plastic pollution and a promising alternative route to long chain diacids.

Abstract:Upcycling of Plastics In the article number 2403728, Weipu Zhu and co‐workers report an optimal approach without additional catalysts and solvents for the upcycling of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste. Specifically, bio‐based hydrogenated dimer acids are found to directly convert PET bottles into biodegradable copolyesters suitable for agricultural mulch films. This work provides an environmentally friendly and cost‐effective strategy for the large‐scale upcycling of PET waste.

Abstract:Alcoholysis of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste to produce monomers, including methanolysis to yield dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and glycolysis to generate bis-2-hydroxyethyl terephthalate (BHET), is a promising strategy in PET waste management. Here, we introduce an efficient PET-alcoholysis approach utilizing an oxygen-vacancy ( V o )-rich catalyst under air, achieving space time yield (STY) of 505.2 g DMT ·g cat −1 ·h −1 and 957.1 g BHET ·g cat −1 ·h −1 , these results represent 51-fold and 28-fold performance enhancements compared to reactions conducted under N 2 . In situ spectroscopy, in combination with density functional theory calculations, elucidates the reaction pathways of PET depolymerization. The process involves O 2 -assisted activation of CH 3 OH to form CH 3 OH * and OOH * species at V o -Zn 2+ –O–Fe 3+ sites, highlighting the critical role of V o -Zn 2+ –O–Fe 3+ sites in ester bond activation and C–O bond cleavage. Moreover, a life cycle assessment demonstrates the viability of our approach in closed-loop recycling, achieving 56.0% energy savings and 44.5% reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions. Notably, utilizing PET textile scrap further leads to 58.4% reduction in initial total operating costs. This research offers a sustainable solution to the challenge of PET waste accumulation.

Abstract:The methanolysis of PET With concern to sustainable development, it is necessary to establish a recycling process of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Methanolysis of PET is promising for chemical recovery of PET and the products are mainly dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and ethylene glycol (EG), but the conditions of state‐of‐art depolymerization are severe. Here, we synthesized ionic liquid [HO3S‐(CH2)3‐NEt3]Cl‐[ZnCl2]0.67 with Brönsted–Lewis di‐acid and used it to efficiently catalyze the methanolysis of PET (mmethanol:mPET about 4) at milder temperature of 195°C with yield of DMT about 78.4%. Reaction kinetics was studied and the result indicated the depolymerization of PET was a first‐order kinetic reaction with the apparent activation energy of DMT formation about 17.63 kJ mol−1. Random sampling experiment was also conducted and the results showd that DMT was the product of deep depolymerization of PET and two methanol molecules were needed to form DMT and EG in the depolymerization process. This study provides an efficient method to the recycling use of PET and wais significant to waste recovery and green environment.

Abstract:Abstract To reduce environmental pollution and reliance on fossil resources, polyethylene terephthalate as the most consumed synthetic polyester needs to be recycled effectively. However, the existing recycling methods cannot process colored or blended polyethylene terephthalate materials for upcycling. Here we report a new efficient method for acetolysis of waste polyethylene terephthalate into terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol diacetate in acetic acid. Since acetic acid can dissolve or decompose other components such as dyes, additives, blends, etc., Terephthalic acid can be crystallized out in a high-purity form. In addition, Ethylene glycol diacetate can be hydrolyzed to ethylene glycol or directly polymerized with terephthalic acid to form polyethylene terephthalate, completing the closed-loop recycling. Life cycle assessment shows that, compared with the existing commercialized chemical recycling methods, acetolysis offers a low-carbon pathway to achieve the full upcycling of waste polyethylene terephthalate.
