Abstract:The electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction is a crucial means to support the conversion and storage of the sustainable renewable energy. Low-crystallinity can offer short-range structural ordering and high active site density. In this work, an efficient self-supported oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst, cobalt iron layered double hydroxide (LDH) grown on Ti3C2 modified nickel foam (NF) heterostructure anode (CoFe-LDH/Ti3C2/NF) was prepared using electrodeposition. The exceptional electrocatalytic OER performance is ensured by in situ decorating monolayer Ti3C2/NF (s-Ti3C2/NF) with low-crystallinity CoFe nanospheres. By harnessing the low crystallinity, well-chosen composition and reasonable heterostructure, the overpotential of CoFe-LDH/Ti3C2/NF decreases to 246mV at a current density of 10mA·cm-2 in alkaline media. After 3000 cyclic voltammograms cycles, the ignorable increase in overpotential of 14mV suggest the excellent long circular stability. Moreover, an accelerated reaction kinetics is implied by the smaller Tafel slope (28.76mV·dec-1) and higher double-layer specific capacitance (2.33 mF·cm-2), which surpassed the counterparts CoFe-LDH grown on NF (CoFe-LDH/NF) and s-Ti3C2/NF. This work paves a new way to fabricate the low-crystallinity materials for electrocatalysis and energy storage.

Abstract:NiFe LDH (Layered Double Hydroxide) is a promising electrocatalyst for oxygen release reaction (OER), which is currently receiving more and more attention. Here, we propose a simple method to enhance the OER activity of NiFe LDH supported on Super P. The NiFe LDH@Super P catalyst with a nanoflower nanostructure was successfully synthesized via pre-hydrothermal treatment method, which ensures the normal nucleation process of the highly active NiFe LDH precursor and significantly promote the full contact of NiFe LDH and Super P in the three-dimensional space. The as synthesized NiFe LDH@Super P-2h sample exhibited excellent OER performances in alkaline media, and the overpotential is only 260 mV at a current density of 10 mA · cm-2. The outstanding OER electrocatalytic reaction performance is attributed to the unique three-dimensional nanoflower structure and excellent composite effect with Super P, which provides more specific surface areas and enables efficient transfer of electrons between them. This research work provides a simple and effective method for developing non-precious metal-based OER catalysts to replace expensive precious metal catalysts.
Improved OER Catalytic Performance of NiFe-LDH with Hydrothermal Carbonization Microspheres

Abstract:The electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a fundamental anodic semi-reaction used in the hydrogen energy industry. Herein, we report a novel NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH)-based hybrid catalyst for the OER, which is promoted by the two-step hydrothermal loading of carbon sphere (CS) onto NiFe-LDH sheets, named as NiFe-LDH@CS. The effects of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) parameters (such as hydrothermal time and glucose concentration) and the loading ratio of CSs on NiFe-LDH@CS were investigated. The results showed that the two-step hydrothermal synthesis significantly inhibited the interference of the carbonized substances on the lattice formation of NiFe-LDH and successfully achieved a firm combination. By adjusting the HTC process, the surface char-acteristics and graphitization degree of the carbonized microspheres can be effectively controlled, leading to increased OER performance of NiFe-LDH@CS. Thus, under the optimal process parameters (5 h, 0.6 M, and 5 mL), NiFe-LDH@CS exhibited an excellent overpotential of 292 mV at 50 mA cm-2 and 372 mV at 100 mA cm-2 for the OER. The outstanding OER performance of NiFe-LDH@CS is attributed to the excellent morphology control of the composite, abundant functional groups, and suitable graphi-tization degree of the hydrothermally carbonized CS, as well as the synergistic effect between the CSs and NiFe-LDH. Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an essential process during electrochemical water -splitting. Due to its sluggish kinetics, low cost and highly efficient catalyst is invariably desired to decrease its overpotential for large-scale application. However, the overpotential of most advanced OER electrocatalysts is still more than 200 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2. In this work, we constructed active layered NiFe double hydroxides with cation defects on self-supported three-dimensional (3D) CoNi nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube composite substrate as integrated OER catalyst. Strikingly, electrochemical measurements showed that the optimized sample exhibited outstanding OER activity with low overpotentials of 178 and 268 mV at the current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2 in alkaline environment, alongside a good durability. The excellent OER performance was ascribed to the strongly synergistic effect of intrinsically active NiFe double hydroxide layers with abundant cation vacancies and 3D carbon nanotube composite substrate with good conductivity and various functional moieties, thus facilitating the electrocatalytic kinetic.(c) 2022 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Improved HER/OER Performance of NiS2/MoS2 Composite Modified by CeO2 and LDH

Abstract:In recent years, there has been significant interest in transition-metal sulfides (TMSs) due to their economic affordability and excellent catalytic activity. Nevertheless, it is difficult for TMSs to achieve satisfactory performance due to problems such as low conductivity, limited catalytic activity, and inadequate stability. Therefore, a catalyst with a heterostructure constituted of a nickel–iron-layered double hydroxide, nickel sulfide, molybdenum disulfide, and cerium dioxide was designed. At the current density of 10 mA cm−2 in an alkaline solution, the catalyst exhibits a HER overpotential of 116 mV. In addition, an overpotential of 235 mV@150 mA cm−2 was displayed for OER. The catalyst showed a good retention rate (94.7% for HER, 98.6% for OER) after 160 h stability tests. The excellent electrochemical performance is attributed to the following points: 1. The self-supporting three-dimensional hierarchical structure provides abundant sites, fast ion diffusion channels, and electron transfer paths, and ensures structural stability. 2. The strong interfacial electron interaction between Ni3S2/MoS2 heterojunction and NiFe-LDH improves the OER reaction kinetics. 3. The Ce3+ and oxygen vacancies in CeO2 promote the dissociation of H2O and promote the HER reaction kinetics. This approach paves the way for developing highly efficient electrocatalysts for various electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Nickel-iron oxyhydroxide (Ni1-xFexOOH) is well recognized as the best-performing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst in alkaline electrolytes, however its analogue cobalt-iron oxyhydroxide (Co1-xFexOOH) is surprisingly less explored despite their structural similarity. Inspired by our recent study on high-performance HER catalyst using the nanostructured CoMoO4 center dot nH(2)O precursor, herein, we report a facile synthesis of Co1-xFexOOH catalyst derived from the same precursor and its excellent electrocatalytic properties towards the OER in alkaline electrolytes. A core-shell structured nanocatalyst consisting of disordered Co1-xFexOOH layer over the surface of crystalline CoMoO4 center dot nH(2)O nanosheets was synthesized using a simple hydrothermal method followed by anodic electrooxidation. Thus-prepared catalyst exhibited extraordinarily high and stable activity towards the OER in alkaline electrolyte, which outperformed most Co-based OER catalysts. Combined with the HER catalyst derived from the same CoMoO4 center dot nH(2)O precursor as the cathode, we further developed and tested a simple water-splitting cell, which significantly surpasses the benchmarking IrO2-Pt/C couple (1.63 V) and requires a voltage of only 1.517 V to afford 10 mA cm(-2) in 1.0 M KOH solution. Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a bottle-neck process in many sustainable energy conversion systems due to its sluggish kinetics. The development of cost-effective yet efficient electrocatalysts towards OER is highly desirable but still a great challenge at current stage. Herein, a new type of hybrid nanostructure, consisting of two-dimensional (2D) Cerium-doped NiFe-layered double hydroxide nanoflakes directly grown on the 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene surface (denoted as NiFeCe-LDH/MXene), is designed using a facile in-situ coprecipitation method. The resultant NiFeCe-LDH/MXene hybrid presents a hierarchical nanoporous structure, high electrical conductivity and strong interfacial junction because of the synergistic effect of Ce doping and MXene coupling. As a result, the hybrid catalyst exhibits an excellent catalytic activity for OER, delivering a low onset overpotential of 197 mV and an overpotential of 260 mV at a current density of 10 mA•cm−2 in the alkaline medium, much lower than its pure LDH counterparts and IrO2 catalyst. Besides, the hybrid catalyst also displays a fast reaction kinetics and a remarkable stable durability. Further theoretic studies using density function theory (DFT) methods reveal that Ce doping could effectively narrow the bandgap of NiFe-LDH and reduce the overpotential in the OER process. This work may shed light on the exploration of advanced electrocatalysts for renewable energy conversion and storage systems.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations reveals that strong coupling between the Mo–Fe(Ni)–O sites and its remarkable lattice contraction facilitate the electron transfer on the tiny ligament surface, where the high-valent Mo sites can absorb H2O molecules and lower the energy barrier of OOH* for adsorption and activation of H2O. Meanwhile, 1-D nanowire and 3-D bicontinuous nanoporous structures together with the optimized atom ratio of Fe and Ni can accelerate electron/ion transport in the OER process, thus further enhancing the OER performance.

Abstract:Developing efficient and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts via doping strategy has well-documented for electrochemical water splitting. Herein, a homogeneous structure (denoted as Co/Ce-Ni3S2/NF) composed of Co and Ce dual doped Ni3S2 nanosheets on nickel foam was synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal method. Co and Ce dopants are distributed inside the host sulfide, thereby raising the active sites and the electrical conductivity. Besides, the CeOx nanoparticles generated by part of the Ce dopants as a cocatalyst further improve the catalytic activity by adding defective sites and enhancing the electron transfer. As a consequence, the obtained Co/Ce-Ni3S2/NF electrode exhibits better electrocatalytic activity than single Co or Ce doped Ni3S2 and pure Ni3S2, with low overpotential (286 mV) at 20 mA-cm−2, a small Tafel slope and excellent long-term durability in strong alkaline solution. These results presented here not only offer a novel platform for designing transition metal and lanthanide dual-doped catalysts, but also supply some guidelines for constructing catalysts in other catalytic applications.

Abstract:Element doping has become an important means of designing and developing efficient and stable Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER). In this work, a new type of CoAl LDH doped with Ce and MoS2 was designed and prepared. The catalyst first prepared Ce-doped CoAl LDH (Ce–CoAl LDH) by co-precipitation and one-step hydrothermal method. Then, MoS2 was introduced between Ce–CoAl LDH layers by hydrothermal method. The double doping of Ce and MoS2 could significantly improve the electrocatalytic activity of CoAl LDH. At the current density of 10 mA/cm2, the potential of 5% Ce–CoAl LDH@MoS2 is 1.508 V, which is much lower than the 1.733 V of CoAl LDH. And the ECSA of 5% Ce-CoAL LDH@MoS2 (23.4 mF/cm2) is nearly 8 times that of CoAl LDH (7.9 mF/cm2). Its excellent OER performance benefits from the increase of active sites and the enhancement of conductivity. This work provides a new research idea for doping design of effective OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Ce-doped NiO catalyst supported on MoO₂ nanorods (Ce-NiO@MoO₂) was constructed as a high-performance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst. The introduction of Ce induced the formation of nanoflower-like NiO on the MoO₂ nanorod substrate. Ce doping not only created numerous unsaturated Ni coordination sites with higher oxidation states, serving as active sites, but also strengthened the adsorption of oxygen intermediates by upshifting the Ni 3d band center, thereby reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining OH* → O* step. Consequently, the Ce-NiO@MoO₂ catalyst exhibited remarkable OER activity, with a low overpotential of 313mV and outstanding 200-hour stability at 1000mAcm⁻², which is attributed to unsaturated Ni active sites and promoted charge and mass transfer facilitated by the unique hierarchical structure. These findings highlight the crucial role of Ce doping in improving electrocatalytic performance and offer insights into developing efficient and cost-effective catalysts for large-scale hydrogen production via water electrolysis.

Abstract:CeO2 has rich oxygen vacancies due to its special redox characteristics (Ce4+ to Ce3+), and shows good co-catalytic effects in the catalytic reaction. However, the low conductivity and large size of CeO2 limit its application in electrocatalytic reactions. In this work, CeO2 nanodots are uniformly grown in situ on the surface of carbon spheres by a simple hydrothermal method. The in situ coupling of CeO2 nanodots and carbon spheres (CB) not only provides richer surface defects and larger specific surface areas, but also improves the electrical conductivity and obtains optimized electronic structures. When CeO2@CB is hybridized with NiFe-layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDHs), which is the typical oxygen evolution catalyst, the CeO2@CB/NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst shows improved oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, with a lower overpotential of 203 mV at current density of 20 mAcm−2 in 1.0 M KOH. Therefore, this work provides a promising strategy for the construction of efficient co-catalysts.

Abstract:Heteroatom doped metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used in OER catalysis. However, the effects of doping methods on these materials are still rarely reported. Herein, the structure and activity of Ce doped nanorod-like MOF (CeNi1.6Fe-MIL-53 and Ce@Ni1.6Fe-MIL-53) were prepared by in-situ co-doping and surface doping methods and analyzed. The structure of Ni1.6Fe-MIL-53 can be optimized at different levels by different Ce-introduction. In contrast, the in-situ co-doping of Ce increases the number of active sites and better optimizes the band structure. Therefore, the CeNi1.6Fe-MIL-53 exhibited good OER activity, which only required an overpotential of 277 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, a Tafel slope of 31.03 mV dec−1 and a good stability maintained for 60 h. Moreover, when CeNi1.6Fe-MIL-53 coupled as an electrolytic cell, the cell showed a low cell potential (1.54 V at 10 mA cm−2) and a good stability (maintained for 33 h).

Abstract:A unique plasma etching‐electrochemical doping route is developed to synthesize reinforced Fe/Mo‐doped Ni oxyhydroxide catalyst for OER in alkaline media. In situ Raman analysis reveals that the intercalation of MoO42− is able to prevent the over‐oxidation of NiOOH matrix, thus keeping the Fe‐doped NiOOH at the most active state. Fe‐doped Ni (oxy)hydroxide shows intriguing activity toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution, yet it remains challenging to further boost its performance. In this work, a ferric/molybdate (Fe3+/MoO42−) co‐doping strategy is reported to promote the OER activity of Ni oxyhydroxide. The reinforced Fe/Mo‐doped Ni oxyhydroxide catalyst supported by nickel foam (p‐NiFeMo/NF) is synthesized via a unique oxygen plasma etching‐electrochemical doping route, in which precursor Ni(OH)2 nanosheets are first etched by oxygen plasma to form defect‐rich amorphous nanosheets, followed by electrochemical cycling to trigger simultaneously Fe3+/MoO42− co‐doping and phase transition. This p‐NiFeMo/NF catalyst requires an overpotential of only 274 mV to reach 100 mA cm−2 in alkaline media, exhibiting significantly enhanced OER activity compared to NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) catalyst and other analogs. Its activity does not fade even after 72 h uninterrupted operation. In situ Raman analysis reveals that the intercalation of MoO42− is able to prevent the over‐oxidation of NiOOH matrix from β to γ phase, thus keeping the Fe‐doped NiOOH at the most active state.

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used in OER catalysis. However, the effects of doping methods on these materials have rarely been reported. Herein, the structure and activity of Ce-doped nanorod-like MOFs (CeNi 1.6 Fe-MIL-53 and Ce@Ni 1.6 Fe-MIL-53) prepared by employing in situ co-doping and surface doping methods were analyzed. The structure of Ni 1.6 Fe-MIL-53 can be optimized at different levels by different Ce-introduction ways. In contrast, the in situ co-doping of Ce increases the number of active sites and better optimizes the band structure. Therefore, CeNi 1.6 Fe-MIL-53 exhibited good OER activity, which required an overpotential of only 277 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 31.03 mV dec −1 and a good stability maintained for 60 h. Moreover, when CeNi 1.6 Fe-MIL-53 was coupled as an electrolytic cell, the cell showed a low cell potential (1.54 V at 10 mA cm −2 ) and good stability (maintained for 33 h).

Abstract:As a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting, NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) demonstrates an excellent activity toward OER in alkaline solution. However, its HER activity is challenged owing to the poor electronic conductivity and insufficient electrochemical active sites. Therefore, a 3D self-supporting metal hydroxide/oxide electrode with abundant oxygen vacancies is prepared by electrodepositing CeOx nanoparticles on NiFe LDH nanosheets. According to the DFT calculations and experimental studies, the oxygen vacancies at the NiFe LDH/CeOx interface can be introduced successfully due to the positive charge accumulation resulting from the local electron potential difference between NiFe LDH and CeOx. The oxygen vacancies accelerate the electrons/ions migration rates, facilitate the charge transfer and increase the electrochemical active sites, which giving rise to an efficient activity toward HER in alkaline solution. Futhermore, NF@NiFe LDH/CeOx needs a lower potential of 1.51 V to drive a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in overall water splitting and demonstrates a superior performance compared with the benchmark Pt/C and RuO2, which indicating to be a promising candidate bifunctional electrode catalyst.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial half reaction of electrochemical water splitting and metal-air batteries. But its sluggish four-electron reaction leads to a high overpotential. Current commercial OER catalysts are mainly noble metal-based materials, but their high cost restricts their broad application. Therefore, extensive efforts have been devoted to exploring low-cost and efficient OER catalysts. Nonprecious metal-based materials have been regarded as promising OER catalyst candidates, due to their abundancy on the earth, controllable morphologies and tunable chemical states. Among various nonprecious metal-based materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted much attention, because of their large specific surface area and rich metal centers. However, their poor electrochemical activities. stabilities and conductivities severely affect their application in OER catalysis. To improve the activities of MOFs, several methods have been adopted, such as synthesizing ultrathin nanosheets, growing MOFs on nickel foam or carbon cloth, doping heteroatoms, and introducing synergistic interactions between two materials. In 1970, Wagner proposed a space-charge them). which indicates that the carrier property can be tuned through adjusting interface. Inspired by this theory, constructing metal oxide-catalyst interface seems to be a promising strategy to improve activities of catalysts. CeO2 is a well-known cocatalyst due to its reversible Ce3+/Ce4+ redox. Previous works have demonstrated that OER performance can be effectively improved through introducing CeO2 since it can speed up the electron mobility and induce strong interaction between CeO2 and metal sites. In this work, an efficient OER catalyst was achieved through introducing CeO2 into FeNi MOF catalyst. FeNi MOF nanosheet arrays grown on nickel foam was firstly prepared via a solvothennal process. Then CeO2 nanoclusters (5 nm) were coated onto FeNi MOF surface by electrodeposition. A series of characterizations were employed to study the morphology, structure and surface electronic state information of the as-obtained CeO2/FeNi MOF. From X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis, the doping of CeO2 clusters and the strong electronic interaction between CeO2 clusters and FeNi MOF induce the formation of Fe/Ni-O-Ce bonds and optimize the electronic structures of Fe/Ni sites, which will enhance OER activities. The OER performance tests confirm that CeO2/FeNi MOF indeed exhibits a superior OER activity than FeNi MOF alone. The hybrid catalyst delivers a higher mass activity (235.4 A.g(-1)) and a faster turnover frequency (0.065 s(-1)) than those of FeNi MOF (43.8 A.g(-1), 0.018 s(-1)). Compared with FeNi MOF, CeO2/FeNi MOF also shows better OER kinetics, as evidenced by a decreased Tafel slope, a reduced charge transfer resistance. Besides, CeO2/FeNi MOF presents an outstanding stability (50 h, 50 mA.cm(2)). All these features make our CeO2/FeNi MOF a potential catalyst in the future application. The interfacial strategy through introducing CeO2 to modulate Fe and Ni active sites may open a door for developing high-performance OER catalysts in future.
