Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) derived from biomass is a versatile platform chemical for producing various degradable polymers, especially polyethylene 2,5-furandicarbox-ylate (PEF). To reduce the high cost of feedstock, fructose instead of expensive 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was used as the feedstock for producing FDCA in the acetic acid (HOAc) solvent by a one-pot, two-step method. Fructose was first catalytically converted into HMF and 5-acetoxymethylfurfural (AMF) in HOAc over the Amberlyst-15 catalyst. After the separation of only Amberlyst-15, the in situ-formed HMF and AMF were further catalytically oxidized to FDCA by air (oxygen) over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts following the free-radical chain reaction mechanism. HOAc was not only used as the solvent for the dehydration and following oxidation process but also served as the effective co-catalyst for the dehydration of fructose. The effects of catalyst species, dosage, and reaction temperature on the dehydration process and oxidation temperature on FDCA yield and purity were evaluated systematically. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a total yield of HMF and AMF of 50% and a final FDCA yield of 35% were achieved. Combined with experimental results and theoretical calculation, the reaction mechanism for fructose dehydration side reactions and the HMF and AMF oxidation reactions was proposed correspondingly. The proposed two-step, one-pot method using fructose as the starting material is a promising route for the commercial production of FDCA with the simple operation and viable yield.

Abstract:Starting from furfural, maleic acid is efficiently synthesized in two steps under very mild conditions. In the first step, 5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone is synthesized via photochemical oxidation and proposed as a stable intermediate. Subsequent oxidation in the second step, by either an electrochemical or enzymatic process, results in maleic acid in high yield and selectivity.Biomass-derived furfural is photochemically transformed into 5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone. Combining Electro-, Photo-, and Biocatalysis for One-Pot Selective Conversion of Furfural into Value-Added C4 Chemicals

Abstract:Chemobiocatalysis has emerged as a powerful tool in synthetic chemistry, but one-pot multistep syntheses incorporating multiple types of catalysts remain challenging because of the greatly increased incompatible issues between different catalysts. In this work, we reported the combination of electro-, photo-, and biocatalysis for one-pot selective valorization of biomass-derived furfural into various C4 chemicals including maleic acid (MA), fumaric acid (FA), d- and l-malic acid (MalA), and l-aspartic acid (l-Asp). MA was concurrently synthesized from furfural via a cascade of electrochemical oxidations with 4-acetamido-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (ACT) and photo-oxygenation with eosin Y (EY) with up to a 97% yield. ACT is a versatile catalyst capable of oxidizing both furfural and intermediate 5-hydroxy-2-(5H)-furanone. Then, biocatalysis was harnessed to produce enantiopure chemicals after photoelectrocatalysis. Furfural was selectively converted to d-MalA via sequential photoelectrooxidation and biocatalytic hydration with a 91% yield as maleate hydratase was readily inactivated under light irradiation. Also, maleate cis–trans isomerase (MaiA) was found to be highly sensitive to chemical oxidation; thus, two-step synthesis of FA and its derivatives l-MalA and l-Asp was performed by sequentially using ACT/EY and one/dual-enzyme with 79–97% yields. Both catalyst and reaction engineering strategies were applied to address the incompatibility between MaiA and photoelectrooxidation. Consequently, FA was produced from furfural in a concurrent manner with a 67% yield. The present work demonstrates the great power of chemobiocatalysis in the valorization of platform chemicals.

Abstract:Biomass conversion offers an efficient approach to alleviate the energy and environmental issues. Electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has attracted tremendous attention in the latest few years for the mild synthesis conditions and high conversion efficiency to obtain 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA), but there still remain problems such as limited yield, short cycle life, and ambiguous reaction mechanism. Despite many reviews highlighting a variety of electrocatalysts for electrochemical oxidation of HMF, a detailed discussion of the structural modulation of catalyst and the underlying catalytic mechanism is still lacking. We herein provide a comprehensive summary of the recent development of electrochemical oxidation of HMF to FDCA, particularly focusing on the mechanism studies as well as the advanced strategies developed to regulate the structure and optimize the performance of the electrocatalysts, including heterointerface construction, defect engineering, single-atom engineering, and in situ reconstruction. Experimental characterization techniques and theoretical calculation methods for mechanism and active site studies are elaborated, and challenges and future directions of electrochemical oxidation of HMF are also prospected. This review will provide guidance for designing advanced catalysts and deepening the understanding of the reaction mechanism beneath electrochemical oxidation of HMF to FDCA.

Abstract:Maleic acid and its anhydride are important intermediates in the chemical industry produced on a multimillion tonne-scale annually. The synthesis of maleic acid/anhydride from renewable biomass resources such as furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural is highly desirable for the sustainability of human society. Most of the previously reported processes for maleic acid/anhydride synthesis from biomass suffer from low efficiency, complicated conditions and poor catalyst recyclability. Herein, we demonstrate a highly efficient and simple system for the synthesis of maleic acid from furfural. An excellent yield (95%) of maleic acid was achieved under mild conditions in this very simple system which requires only H2O2 as an oxidant in formic acid solvent. Under similar conditions, an 89% yield of maleic acid was achieved from biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. This study presents a novel synthetic method and a promising process for maleic acid production from renewable biomass resources.

Abstract:BACKGROUNDThe preparation of maleic acid from the oxidation of renewable furfural has attracted significant attention, but research regarding the direct transformation of biomass‐derived sugar to maleic acid is rare. The research regarding the direct transformation of xylose to maleic acid would further promote its industrial applications. RESULTSThe direct synthesis of maleic acid from xylose was investigated based on a sustainable system of deep eutectic solvents (DESs). Four DESs were screened to evaluate their abilities for the dehydration of xylose. Hydrogen peroxide was then loaded to realize the oxidation of furfural without the separation of intermediates. A good maleic acid yield of 20.8%, along with 5.0% of fumaric acid, based on the xylose content were obtained under the initial xylose loading of 50 mM, a SnCl4/xylose molar ratio of 4:1, in a monophase choline chloride (ChCl)‐formic acid (Fa) (molar ratio of 1:6) system at 120 °C for 2 h. Then, 4 ml of H2O2 per mmol furfural was loaded for a further 10 min at 120 °C. CONCLUSIONThis ChCl‐Fa‐SnCl4‐H2O2 system possesses a higher oxidation selectivity to maleic acid with no furanone and succinic acid. Moreover, it was interesting that ChCl and SnCl4 could be recovered through natural recrystallization. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Furancarboxylic acids are promising biobased building blocks in pharmaceutical and polymer industries. In this work, dual-enzyme cascade systems composed of galactose oxidase (GOase) and alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs) are constructed for controlled synthesis of 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), based on the catalytic promiscuity of ADHs. The byproduct H2O2, which is produced in GOase-catalyzed oxidation of HMF to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), is used for horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-mediated regeneration of the oxidized nicotinamide cofactors for subsequent oxidation of DFF promoted by an ADH, thus implementing H2O2 internal recycling. The desired products FFCA and FDCA are obtained with yields of more than 95 %.

Abstract:Recently, catalytic valorization of biomass‐derived furans has received growing interest. 5‐Aminomethyl‐2‐furancarboxylic acid (AMFC), a furan amino acid, holds great promise in the aeras of polymer and pharmaceutical, but its synthesis remains limited. In this work, we report a chemobiocatalytic route toward AMFC by combining laccase‐TEMPO system and recombinant Escherichia coli (named E. coli_TAF) harboring ω‐transaminase (TA), L‐alanine dehydrogenase (L‐AlaDH) and formate dehydrogenase (FDH), starting from 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). In the cascade, HMF is oxidized into 5‐formyl‐2‐furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) by laccase‐TEMPO system, and then the resulting intermediate was converted into AMFC by E. coli_TAF via transamination with cheap ammonium formate instead of costly organic amine donors, theoretically generating H2O and CO2 as by‐products. The tandem process was run in a one‐pot twostep manner, affording AMFC with approximately 81% yield, together with 10% 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) as by‐product. In addition, the scale‐up production of AMFC was demonstrated, with 0.41 g/L h productivity and 8.6 g/L titer. This work may pave the way for green manufacturing of the furan‐containing amino acid.

Abstract:Biomass conversion to value-added chemicals has received tremendous attention for solving global warming issues and fossil fuel depletion. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a key bio-based platform molecule to produce many useful organic chemicals by oxidation, hydrogenation, polymerization, and ring-opening reactions. Among all derivatives, the oxidation product 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising alternative to petroleum-based terephthalic acid for the synthesis of biodegradable plastics. This review analytically discusses the recent progress in the thermocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photocatalytic oxidation of HMF into FDCA, including catalyst screening, synthesis processes, and reaction mechanism. Rapid fundamental advances may be possible in non-precious metal and metal-free catalysts that are highly efficient under the base-free conditions, and external field-assisted processes like electrochemical or photoelectrochemical cells.

Abstract:This study investigated the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to produce valuable products such as 2,5-furandicarboxaldehyde (DFF), 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) through (photo) chemical and enzymatic catalysis. Laccases from different sources, including Aspergillus spp., Pseudomonas cepacea, and Trametes versicolor, were evaluated for their catalytic activity in the HMF oxidation. Laccase from Trametes versicolor (LacTV) emerged as the most effective catalyst, achieving complete conversion of HMF under specific pH conditions. The reaction mechanisms were explored, revealing a preference for the primary alcohol oxidation pathway over the aldehyde, leading to the formation of DFF and subsequent conversion to FFCA and FDCA. The impact of substrate concentration on HMF conversion was examined, revealing optimal conversion at lower HMF concentrations ( 100 mM). The study also examined the influence of blue light (430 nm) on this reaction, revealing the dependence on light exposure for gC3N4 based catalysts and a negative effect for LacTV. Furthermore, the study introduces a modular flow chemical platform that utilizes Continuous Stirred Tank Reactors (CSTR) in a cascade configuration, the optimization of HMF oxidation. The implementation of this innovative approach has led to the effective synthesis of FDCA, demonstrating an impressive 40-fold increase in productivity compared to the traditional batch system. These results present significant potential for advancing green chemistry and sustainable chemical synthesis, introducing novel possibilities for environmentally friendly HMF oxidation processes.

Abstract:Furfural (mainly furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural) and its derivatives stand out as an important platform for C5 and C6 compounds from lignocellulosic biomass. Catalytic valorization of these renewable carbohydrates not only manufactures various high-valued chemicals but also enriches routes and theories for the direct use of crude biomass. Photocatalytic conversion of furfural and its derivatives using solar energy has recently received great attention. Such an environmentally friendly and energy-saving approach enables activation and transformation of the target chemical bonds under very mild reaction conditions using photo-excited charge carriers or photogenerated reactive species. However, the highly selective photocatalysts are rather deficient and the reaction mechanisms usually remain obscure. Herein, this review article aims to systematically summarize the recent advances in sunlight-driven photocatalytic conversion of furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to sustainable building-block chemicals. In particular, the strategies of catalyst designing and the unique roles of reactive species (i.e., photogenerated electrons and holes, hydroxyl and superoxide radicals, and singlet oxygen) are commented. This allows getting insights into the catalytic mechanisms. In addition, the latest progresses in the combination of such a photo-oxidation with H2 evolution or CO2 reduction, as well as photo(electro)chemical conversion, are also reviewed. Apart from the common oxidation and reduction reactions, some nontraditional reaction paths (i.e., reductive coupling, oxidative decarboxylation and ring-opening) and promising products are introduced. Finally the challenges and future opportunities in the perspective of green chemistry are also analyzed. Therefore, a bright prospect can be foreseen in the near future on much more photocatalytic valorizations of furfural-like molecules.

Selective Oxidation of Furfural to 2(5H)-Furanone and Maleic Acid over CuMoO 4

Abstract:Green synthesis of high-value furanone derivatives and C4 organic acids from renewable biomass is a promising yet challenging route. Herein, we report a suitable heterogeneous and recoverable bimetallic CuMoO4 catalyst for the selective oxidation of furfural to 2(5H)-furanone and maleic acid (MAc). The resulting CuMoO4 manifested excellent catalytic performance with a high furfural conversion of 99%, giving a 2(5H)-furanone yield of up to 66% or a MAc yield of over 74% by regulating the reaction conditions. The synergy of Cu and Mo species in CuMoO4 boosted the outstanding catalytic efficiency through the Mo6+–Mo5+–Mo4+ redox facilitated by the redox of Cu+/Cu2+. More importantly, the Mo species in CuMoO4 played a key role in activating the aldehyde group in furfural to facilitate hydrogen abstraction from the aldehyde group by CuMoO4 and the active SO4•– radical, which was from peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Selective Photocatalytic Oxidation of Furfural to C4 Compounds with Metal-Ts-1 Zeolite

Abstract:A series of metal-TS-1 zeolite catalysts were designed to selectively catalyze the photo oxidation of furfural to C4 carboxylic acid derivatives at ambient temperature and pressure. The photocatalytic preparation of malic acid from furfural was realized for the first time. The selective distribution of products could be controlled by adjusting the physical and chemical characteristics of the catalyst. Smaller pore size prevented the further conversion of maleic acid to malic acid; moderate acidity was beneficial for the preparation of malic acid; lower valence band was in favor of maleic acid production while higher valence band tended to form malic acid. The synergistic effect of pore structure, acidity and energy band structure of catalysts affected the product distribution. The yield of maleic acid reached as high as 40% over Fe-TS-1, meanwhile, the yield of malic acid reached as high as 63% over Ni-TS-1. The doping of metal was believed to be an effective procedure to adjust the structure and physicochemical properties of zeolite. Matel-TS-1 zeolite was also expected to be widely used in photocatalytic system to achieve more selective reactions.

Abstract:Efficient conversion of furfural to valuable chemicals is attracting attention because it is one of the bulk feedstocks in biomass refinery. Maleic acid (MA) and fumaric acid (FA) are two types of bulk monomers that can be prepared from furfural. Here, a simple method was developed to oxidize furfural to both MA and FA in a green deep eutectic solvent (DES). DES contained oxalic acid and choline chloride (ChCl); oxalic acid worked as both the main content of the solvent and acidic catalyst for the conversion. It was found that the conversion of furfural could reach 100%, while the yield of MA and FA reached 95.7% under a mild reaction temperature of 50 degrees C, which provided a green and efficient route for the synthesis of valuable monomers from furfural.

Abstract:Maleic anhydride (MAnh) and its acids are critical intermediates in chemical industry. The synthesis of maleic anhydride from renewable furfural is one of the most sought after processes in the field of sustainable chemistry. In this study, a plate vanadium phosphorus oxide (VPO) catalyst synthesized by a hydrothermal method with glucose as a green reducing agent catalyzes furfural oxidation to MAnh in the gas phase. The plate catalyst-denoted as VPOHT -has a preferentially exposed (200) crystal plane and exhibited dramatically enhanced activity, selectivity and stability as compared to conventional VPO catalysts and other state-of-the-art catalytic systems. At 360 °C reaction temperature with air as an oxidant, about 90 % yield of MAnh was obtained at 10 vol % of furfural in the feed, a furfural concentration value that is much higher than those (<2 vol %) reported for other catalytic systems. The catalyst showed good long-term stability and there was no decrease in activity or selectivity for MAnh during the time-on-stream of 25 h. The high efficiency and catalyst stability indicate the great potential of this system for the synthesis of maleic anhydride from renewable furfural.
Oxidation of Furfural and Furan Derivatives to Maleic Acid in the Presence of a Simple Catalyst System Based on Acetic Acid and TS-1 and Hydrogen Peroxide

Abstract:Titanium silicate molecular sieve (TS-1) and acetic acid efficiently catalyze the oxidation of furan and furan derivatives to the corresponding maleic acid (MA) in very good yields using hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizing agent. The effect of various solvents, the effect of temperature, reaction time, concentration of hydrogen peroxide, and quantities of the catalyst on the MA yield was studied. With the best conditions, MA is the sole product obtained after a fast and simple purification by filtration and evaporation. Compared to the previously reported methods, this work is a good compromise between the different reaction parameters and offers a good alternative to the production of biosourced MA.

Abstract:The present work introduces an extremely simple and eco-friendly strategy for the highly selective synthesis of maleic acid (MA) via oxidation of renewable furfural using the abundant biomass-derived P-C-T catalyst. The P-C-T carbon catalyst was metal-free and prepared by the pyrolyzation of phytic acid, which is a ubiquitous natural molecule containing phosphorus. Extensive characterization was carried out to reveal the morphological and elemental properties of the synthesized P-C-T series. The effect of the annealing temperature of pyrolyzing phytic acid on the properties of the yielded P-C-T and subsequent catalytic performance was also explored. The catalytic oxidation of furfural to MA was carried out in the presence of H2O2 within an aqueous system. The reaction conditions including the catalyst loading, H2O2 concentration, reaction temperature and duration were further optimized. It was found that P-C-600 exhibited a remarkable catalytic activity for MA synthesis from furfural oxidation with a maximum yield of 76.3% achieved in water. The excellent catalytic performance of P-C-600 was attributed to its unique atomic layered structure and suitable acidity. P-C-600 could also be re-used for at least six runs without any obvious decrease in its catalytic performance. The intrinsic advantages of green synthesis, low cost, and excellent catalytic performance in the catalytic oxidation of furfural to MA suggested that P-C-600 would be a promising catalyst in future industrial applications for MA synthesis in a green manner.
