Abstract:Maleic acid and its anhydride are important intermediates in the chemical industry produced on a multimillion tonne-scale annually. The synthesis of maleic acid/anhydride from renewable biomass resources such as furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural is highly desirable for the sustainability of human society. Most of the previously reported processes for maleic acid/anhydride synthesis from biomass suffer from low efficiency, complicated conditions and poor catalyst recyclability. Herein, we demonstrate a highly efficient and simple system for the synthesis of maleic acid from furfural. An excellent yield (95%) of maleic acid was achieved under mild conditions in this very simple system which requires only H2O2 as an oxidant in formic acid solvent. Under similar conditions, an 89% yield of maleic acid was achieved from biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. This study presents a novel synthetic method and a promising process for maleic acid production from renewable biomass resources.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), mainly synthesized by the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased monomer for high-performance polymers. In this work, we have a comprehensive investigation on the rapid and highly selective oxidation process of HMF to FDCA in acetic acid (HAc) with Co/Mn/Br catalyst and air as the oxidant. It was found that both aldehyde and hydroxymethyl functional groups of HMF could be first oxidized in the sequential oxidation of HMF to FDCA, but 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was the main oxidation intermediate. Apart from the side reaction of HMF overoxidation to COx (CO and CO2) and HMF condensation to polymers, a small part of HMF will be further oxidized to maleic acid (MA) and fumaric acid (FA) via the ring-opening reactions under severe conditions because of the instability of furan ring. To reduce the side reactions and maximize the FDCA yield, the effects of temperature, pressure, substrate solvent ratio, catalyst composition and concentration, and water concentration on the main reactions and side reactions of the HMF oxidation were systematically evaluated. Under the optimum conditions, the selectivity of FDCA reached 92% with the total conversion of HMF in less than 20 min at a high mass ratio of substrate and solvent (1/9), and the purity of FDCA exceeded 99.8%. The experimental results provide a great reference and inspiration for the optimization of the HMF oxidation process and the large-scale production of FDCA.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), which is currently prepared by catalyzing the oxidation of 5-hydroxyme-thylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased platform compound with broad market prospects. Herein, a detailed free-radical chain reaction mechanism consisting of both main and side reaction pathways was proposed to describe the liquid-phase air oxidation process of 5hydroxyme-thylfurfural to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid over a Co/Mn/Br catalyst. The higher reactivity of the hydroxymethyl group than the aldehyde group for HMF oxidation was first explained according to the retardation effect of alcohols on free-radical reactions and the reactive activity of active hydrogen on the two substituents of HMF. Considering the low stability of HMF, the possible side reactions including condensation, decarboxylation, decarbonylation, and ring-opening for HMF oxidation were further investigated. Subsequently, to obtain more reliable model parameters, a lumped kinetic scheme was developed considering only the formation of important and detectable reactants, intermediates, and products. Since the total reaction rate is not sensitive to the reactant concentration, a fractional kinetic model was adopted to correlate the experimental results and evaluate the kinetic parameters.

Abstract:Maleic anhydride (MAnh) and its acids are critical intermediates in chemical industry. The synthesis of maleic anhydride from renewable furfural is one of the most sought after processes in the field of sustainable chemistry. In this study, a plate vanadium phosphorus oxide (VPO) catalyst synthesized by a hydrothermal method with glucose as a green reducing agent catalyzes furfural oxidation to MAnh in the gas phase. The plate catalyst-denoted as VPOHT -has a preferentially exposed (200) crystal plane and exhibited dramatically enhanced activity, selectivity and stability as compared to conventional VPO catalysts and other state-of-the-art catalytic systems. At 360 °C reaction temperature with air as an oxidant, about 90 % yield of MAnh was obtained at 10 vol % of furfural in the feed, a furfural concentration value that is much higher than those (<2 vol %) reported for other catalytic systems. The catalyst showed good long-term stability and there was no decrease in activity or selectivity for MAnh during the time-on-stream of 25 h. The high efficiency and catalyst stability indicate the great potential of this system for the synthesis of maleic anhydride from renewable furfural.

Abstract:Titanium silicate molecular sieve (TS-1) and acetic acid efficiently catalyze the oxidation of furan and furan derivatives to the corresponding maleic acid (MA) in very good yields using hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizing agent. The effect of various solvents, the effect of temperature, reaction time, concentration of hydrogen peroxide, and quantities of the catalyst on the MA yield was studied. With the best conditions, MA is the sole product obtained after a fast and simple purification by filtration and evaporation. Compared to the previously reported methods, this work is a good compromise between the different reaction parameters and offers a good alternative to the production of biosourced MA.

Abstract:A heterogeneous catalytic system using binary Mo-V metal oxides as catalysts was demonstrated for the selective aerobic oxidation of furfural to maleic anhydride (MA). Aspects such as the solvent for the reaction, the phase composition and the Mo/V ratio for the catalyst, and other reaction conditions were investigated in detail. Up to 65% yield of MA was achieved over the Mo4VO14 catalyst in an acetic acid solvent under optimal conditions. The catalyst could be recycled. The reaction mechanism and the role of the acetic acid solvent were also discussed.

Abstract:With the dwindling availability of fossil fuel resources and the dramatic increase in demand, 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF) obtained from renewable biomass resources has great potential as a fossil fuel alternative. In this work, a high yield (80.5%) of MMF was obtained from fructose catalyzed by Amberlyst-15 with the assistance of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in methanol at 100 degrees C for 10 h. Based on a detailed investigation of the reaction mechanism through the effects of DMSO, Amberlyst-15, reaction time, and reaction temperature on MMF yield and the existence of intermediates proved by FTIR, a two-step pathway was proposed: (1) DMSO and H ion on Amberlyst-15 act as a joint-catalyst [DMSOH](+), facilitating the dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and (2) [DMSOH](+) assists the etherification of HMF with methanol into MMF, which is the rate-determining step. This finding expands the concept of biomass conversion into biomass fuels and plays a vital role in catalyst screen and design, reaction medium selection, and industrial applications.

Abstract:BACKGROUNDThe preparation of maleic acid from the oxidation of renewable furfural has attracted significant attention, but research regarding the direct transformation of biomass‐derived sugar to maleic acid is rare. The research regarding the direct transformation of xylose to maleic acid would further promote its industrial applications. RESULTSThe direct synthesis of maleic acid from xylose was investigated based on a sustainable system of deep eutectic solvents (DESs). Four DESs were screened to evaluate their abilities for the dehydration of xylose. Hydrogen peroxide was then loaded to realize the oxidation of furfural without the separation of intermediates. A good maleic acid yield of 20.8%, along with 5.0% of fumaric acid, based on the xylose content were obtained under the initial xylose loading of 50 mM, a SnCl4/xylose molar ratio of 4:1, in a monophase choline chloride (ChCl)‐formic acid (Fa) (molar ratio of 1:6) system at 120 °C for 2 h. Then, 4 ml of H2O2 per mmol furfural was loaded for a further 10 min at 120 °C. CONCLUSIONThis ChCl‐Fa‐SnCl4‐H2O2 system possesses a higher oxidation selectivity to maleic acid with no furanone and succinic acid. Abstract:Starting from furfural, maleic acid is efficiently synthesized in two steps under very mild conditions. In the first step, 5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone is synthesized via photochemical oxidation and proposed as a stable intermediate. Subsequent oxidation in the second step, by either an electrochemical or enzymatic process, results in maleic acid in high yield and selectivity.Biomass-derived furfural is photochemically transformed into 5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone. Subsequent electrochemical or enzymatic oxidation efficiently yields maleic acid under mild conditions.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The present work introduces an extremely simple and eco-friendly strategy for the highly selective synthesis of maleic acid (MA) via oxidation of renewable furfural using the abundant biomass-derived P-C-T catalyst. The P-C-T carbon catalyst was metal-free and prepared by the pyrolyzation of phytic acid, which is a ubiquitous natural molecule containing phosphorus. Extensive characterization was carried out to reveal the morphological and elemental properties of the synthesized P-C-T series. The effect of the annealing temperature of pyrolyzing phytic acid on the properties of the yielded P-C-T and subsequent catalytic performance was also explored. The catalytic oxidation of furfural to MA was carried out in the presence of H2O2 within an aqueous system. The reaction conditions including the catalyst loading, H2O2 concentration, reaction temperature and duration were further optimized. It was found that P-C-600 exhibited a remarkable catalytic activity for MA synthesis from furfural oxidation with a maximum yield of 76.3% achieved in water. The excellent catalytic performance of P-C-600 was attributed to its unique atomic layered structure and suitable acidity. P-C-600 could also be re-used for at least six runs without any obvious decrease in its catalytic performance. The intrinsic advantages of green synthesis, low cost, and excellent catalytic performance in the catalytic oxidation of furfural to MA suggested that P-C-600 would be a promising catalyst in future industrial applications for MA synthesis in a green manner.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalytic systems using vanadium-based solid catalysts with or without silica support were developed for the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) to maleic anhydride (MA) and up to 79% yield of MA was achieved. Both unsupported and silica supported vanadium oxide catalysts showed high activity, selectivity, and recyclability. The direct conversion of fructose to MA via the HMF intermediate was further demonstrated and over 50% overall yield of MA was achieved.

Abstract:The increasing demand for fuels and chemicals in the world has prompted the exploration of various forms of renewable energy resources. Using C5-based furfural as the platform to replace the fossil energy resources is greatly attractive because of its abundance and environmental friendliness. Here we study the activity, selectivity, and possible reaction pathways for the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation of furfural over small Au clusters using hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. Furfural reacts with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of the catalysts with 93% selectivity towards maleic anhydride. Natural population analysis, frontier molecular orbital analysis, and spectroscopic analysis are used to illustrate the interaction mechanism between C 5 H 4 O 2 , H 2 O 2 , and Au. Reaction pathways leading to the formation of maleic anhydride are also explored. The reaction of C 5 H 4 O 2 with H 2 O 2 in the absence of a catalyst bears a relatively high transition state energy barrier of 2.98 eV for the first step involving absorption of H atom of H 2 O 2 on the –OH group of C 5 H 4 O 2 . This is in agreement with the blank experiment where there were rare oxidation products observed in the absence of the metal cluster catalysts. On the other hand, transition state energies in the presence of the Au metal clusters are lower and the most feasible pathway is where the substrate and H 2 O 2 co-bind on the Au catalyst and H 2 O 2 molecule transfers an oxygen to the substrate, leading to the cleavage of the O–O bond.

Abstract:Green synthesis of high-value furanone derivatives and C4 organic acids from renewable biomass is a promising yet challenging route. Herein, we report a suitable heterogeneous and recoverable bimetallic CuMoO4 catalyst for the selective oxidation of furfural to 2(5H)-furanone and maleic acid (MAc). The resulting CuMoO4 manifested excellent catalytic performance with a high furfural conversion of 99%, giving a 2(5H)-furanone yield of up to 66% or a MAc yield of over 74% by regulating the reaction conditions. The synergy of Cu and Mo species in CuMoO4 boosted the outstanding catalytic efficiency through the Mo6+–Mo5+–Mo4+ redox facilitated by the redox of Cu+/Cu2+. More importantly, the Mo species in CuMoO4 played a key role in activating the aldehyde group in furfural to facilitate hydrogen abstraction from the aldehyde group by CuMoO4 and the active SO4•– radical, which was from peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Selective Oxidation of Furfural in a Bi-Phasic System with Homogeneous Acid Catalyst

Abstract:The selective catalytic oxidation of furfural to 2(5H)-furanone, succinic acid (SA) and maleic acid (MA) was studied. Under optimized conditions, furfural was oxidized to 2(5H)-furanone.with a yield of 60-62% in an aqueous/organic bi-phasic system using 1,2-dichloroethane or ethyl acetate as the solvent and formic acid as the catalyst, while the total yield of SA and MA was 15-20%. Compared with other homogeneous and heterogeneous acid catalysts, formic acid gave a much higher selectivity to 2(5H)-furanone because it reacted with hydrogen peroxide to generate performic acid that had a strong oxidizing nature and good solubility in both the aqueous and organic phases. The solvent had a significant influence on the product distribution. A simplified reaction network was established to quantitatively analyze the solvent effect based on the reaction rate constants. In the homogeneous system, the yield of 2(5H)furanone decreased while the yield of SA increased with an increasing dielectric constant of the solvent. The formic acid/furfural molar ratio, reaction temperature and furfural concentration were optimized for the selective oxidation of furfural to 2(5H)-furanone in the bi-phasic reaction system. Abstract:Furfural is an alternative feedstock and has been used for the production of maleic acid (MA) and fumaric acid (FA) by an oxidation process. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were used as the green solvents while sodium chlorate was used as an oxidant and vanadium pentoxide was used as the catalyst at 70-90 degrees C under atmospheric pressure. It was found that several acidic DESs are valid, such as acetic acid/choline chloride (AA/ChCl) and propionic acid/choline chloride (PA/ChCl), and AA/ChCl DES was selected as the solvent for the conversion. The optimal DES is AA/ChCl, and the effect of the amount of oxidant, time, and temperature on the yield of the MA and FA has been systematically studied, and the conversion of furfural can reach 100% while the yield of the MA and FA reached 66.5% under reaction temperature of 80 degrees C for 12 h, which provides a new green route to synthesis valuable monomers from furfural.

Abstract:Sodium alginate is biomass-derived polysaccharides. A novel hydrogel (SA-H3PO4) was prepared by taking advantage of the hydrogen bonding interactions between sodium alginate and phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid molecules are highly dispersed in the hydrogel. A phosphorus-doped carbon material (PC-700) with a high content of P was derived through the calcination of the SA-H3PO4 xerogel under N2 at 700 °C. PC-700 was used for the catalytic oxidation of furfural to maleic acid with the involvement of H2O2. The reaction route was investigated and 9 representative reactions for the reaction network were determined. The reaction rate constants and apparent activation energies of the reactions were obtained. Using the kinetics parameters, the kinetic models can simulate the concentration profiles in good agreement. Based on ample experimental results, the C3P=O species in PC-700 were identified as the active sites. The production of maleic acid from furfural over PC-700 is mainly achieved through the oxidation of furfural to HFONE and the direct oxidation of furfural to maleic acid via the β-FA formation. PC-700 has shown an excellent catalytic activity for production of maleic acid from furfural in the presence of H2O2. For the oxidation of 1000 mM furfural, the maleic acid yield 74.8% and furfural conversion 100% were obtained at 80 °C within 5 h.

Abstract:An efficient catalytic system for biomass oxidation to form formic acid was developed. The conversion of glucose to formic acid can reach up to 52?% yield within 3 h when catalyzed by 5 mol?% of H5PV2Mo10O40 at only 373 K using air as the oxidant. Furthermore, the heteropolyacid can be used as a bifunctional catalyst in the conversion of cellulose to formic acid (yield=35?%) with air as the oxidant.

Abstract:The utilization of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) for the large-scale production of essential chemicals has been largely limited by the formation of solid humin as a byproduct, which prevents the operation of stepwise batch-type and continuous flow-type processes. The reaction of HMF with 1,3-propanediol produces an HMF acetal derivative that exhibits excellent thermal stability. Aerobic oxidation of the HMF acetal with a CeO2-supported Au catalyst and Na2CO3 in water gives a 90-95% yield of furan 2,5-dicarboxylic acid, an increasingly important commodity chemical for the biorenewables industry, from concentrated solutions (10-20 wt%) without humin formation. The six-membered acetal ring suppresses thermal decomposition and self-polymerization of HMF in concentrated solutions. Kinetic studies supported by DFT calculations identify two crucial steps in the reaction mechanism, that is, the partial hydrolysis of the acetal into 5-formyl-2-furan carboxylic acid involving OH- and Lewis acid sites on CeO2, and subsequent oxidative dehydrogenation of the in situ generated hemiacetal involving Au nanoparticles. These results represent a significant advance over the current state of the art, overcoming an inherent limitation of the oxidation of HMF to an important monomer for biopolymer production.

Abstract:Biomass conversion to value-added chemicals has received tremendous attention for solving global warming issues and fossil fuel depletion. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a key bio-based platform molecule to produce many useful organic chemicals by oxidation, hydrogenation, polymerization, and ring-opening reactions. Among all derivatives, the oxidation product 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising alternative to petroleum-based terephthalic acid for the synthesis of biodegradable plastics. This review analytically discusses the recent progress in the thermocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photocatalytic oxidation of HMF into FDCA, including catalyst screening, synthesis processes, and reaction mechanism. Rapid fundamental advances may be possible in non-precious metal and metal-free catalysts that are highly efficient under the base-free conditions, and external field-assisted processes like electrochemical or photoelectrochemical cells.
