Abstract:Castable polyurethane (CPUE) bearings have shown potential for production applications. However, the operational use of CPUE bearings is limited by the hydrolysis of polyurethane elastomer (PUE) in water. The incomplete understanding of the PUE's hydrolysis mechanism hinders developing the effective solutions for CPUE bearings. Thus, this study investigates the impact of water immersion on the mechanical properties of PUE and CPUE bearings using water absorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The results indicated that water absorption significantly affects the mechanical properties of PUE and CPUE bearings by increasing the cross-linked hydrogen bond spacing between macromolecules and decreasing cohesion energy. This causes a microphase separation between the soft and hard segments, softening the material and degrading its mechanical properties. However, the bonding force between the PUE adhesive layer and the iron plate can mitigate the effect of property degradation due to the CPUE's stacked layer design. These findings provide new insights into the hydrolysis mechanism of PUE and have important implications for building CPUE bearings for deepwater applications.
