Abstract:We consider a non-degenerate conic in $\PG(2,q^2)$, $q$ odd, that is tangent to $\ell_\infty$ and look at its structure in the Bruck-Bose representation in $\PG(4,q)$. We determine which combinatorial properties of this set of points in $\PG(4,q)$ are needed to reconstruct the conic in $\PG(2,q^2)$. That is, we define a set $\C$ in $\PG(4,q)$ with $q^2$ points that satisfies certain combinatorial properties. We then show that if $q\ge 7$, we can use $\C$ to construct a regular spread $§$ in the hyperplane at infinity of $\PG(4,q)$, and that $\C$ corresponds to a conic in the Desarguesian plane $¶(§)\cong\PG(2,q^2)$ constructed via the Bruck-Bose correspondence.

Abstract:In this paper, we characterise point sets having the same intersection numbers with respect to hyperplanes as an ovoidal cone. In particular, we show that a set of points of PG(4 , q ) which blocks all planes and intersects solids in q + 1 , q 2 + 1 or q 2 + q + 1 points is a plane or an ovoidal cone, and determine all examples that arise when the blocking condition is omitted.

Abstract:This article considers an F_q-conic contained in an F_q-subplane of PG(2,q^3), and shows that it corresponds to a normal rational curve in the Bruck-Bose representation in PG(6,q). This article then characterises which normal rational curves of PG(6,q) correspond via the Bruck-Bose representation to F_q-conics of PG(2,q^3). The normal rational curves of interest are called 3-special, which relates to how the extension of the normal rational curve meets the transversal lines of the regular 2-spread of the Bruck-Bose representation. This article uses geometric arguments that exploit the interaction between the Bruck-Bose representation of PG(2,q^3) in PG(6,q), and the Bose representation of PG(2,q^3) in PG(8,q).

Abstract:In: S.G. Barwick and W.A. Jackson. Sublines and subplanes of PG(2,q^3) in the Bruck--Bose representation in PG(6,q). Finite Fields Th. App. 18 (2012) 93--107., the authors determine the representation of order-q-subplanes and order-q-sublines of PG(2,q^3) in the Bruck-Bose representation in PG(6,q). In particular, they showed that an order-q-subplane of PG(2,q^3) corresponds to a certain ruled surface in PG(6,q). In this article we show that the converse holds, namely that any ruled surface satisfying the required properties corresponds to a tangent order-q-subplane of PG(2,q^3).

Quatroids and Rational Plane Cubics

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.

Abstract:This article studies conics and subconics of $PG(2,q^2)$ and their representation in the André/Bruck-Bose setting in $PG(4,q)$. In particular, we investigate their relationship with the transversal lines of the regular spread. The main result is to show that a conic in a tangent Baer subplane of $PG(2,q^2)$ corresponds in $PG(4,q)$ to a normal rational curve that meets the transversal lines of the regular spread. Conversely, every 3 and 4-dimensional normal rational curve in $PG(4,q)$ that meets the transversal lines of the regular spread corresponds to a conic in a tangent Baer subplane of $PG(2,q^2)$.

Abstract:The paper is a contribution of the conjecture of Kobayashi that the complement of a generic plain curve of degree at least five is hyperbolic. The main result is that the complement of a generic configuration of three quadrics is hyperbolic and hyperbolically embedded as well as the complement of two quadrics and a line.

Abstract:Every polygon with n vertices in the complex projective plane is naturally associated with its adjoint curve of degree n-3. Hence the adjoint of a heptagon is a plane quartic. We prove that a general plane quartic is the adjoint of exactly 864 distinct complex heptagons. This number had been numerically computed by Kohn et al. We use intersection theory and the Scorza correspondence for quartics to show that 864 is an upper bound, complemented by a lower bound obtained through explicit analysis of the famous Klein quartic.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce an important class of surfaces, namely, quadrics in the Euclidean 3-space $\mathbb{E}^{3}$. We prove that planes, spheres and circular cylinders are the only quadric surfaces whose Gauss map $\boldsymbol{G}$ satisfies a relation of the form $\Delta^{I}\boldsymbol{G}= M \boldsymbol{G}$, where $M$ is a square matrix of order 3 and $\Delta^{I}$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator corresponding to the first fundamental form $I$ of the surface.

On the $PGL_2(q)$-orbits of lines of $PG(3,q)$ and binary quartic forms

Abstract:We study the problem of classifying the lines of the projective $3$-space $PG(3,q)$ over a finite field $GF(q)$ into orbits of the group $G=PGL(2,q)$ of linear symmetries of the twisted cubic $C$. A generic line neither intersects $C$ nor lies in any of its osculating planes. While the non-generic lines have been classified into $G$-orbits in literature, it has been an open problem to classify the generic lines into $G$-orbits. For a general field $F$ of characteristic different from $2$ and $3$, the twisted cubic determines a symplectic polarity on $\mathbb P^3$. In the Klein representation of lines of $\mathbb P^3$, the tangent lines of $C$ are represented by a degree $4$ rational normal curve in a hyperplane $\mathcal H$ of the second exterior power $\mathbb P^5$ of $\mathbb P^3$. Atiyah studied the lines of $\mathbb P^3$ with respect to $C$, in terms of the geometries of these two curves. Polar duality of lines on $\mathbb P^3$ corresponds to Hodge duality on $\mathbb P^5$, and $\mathcal H$ is the hyperplane of Hodge self-dual elements of $\mathbb P^5$. We show that $\mathcal H$ can be identified in a $PGL_2$-equivariant way with the space of binary quartic forms over $F$, and that pairs of polar dual lines of $\mathbb P^3$ correspond to binary quartic forms whose apolar invariant is a square. We first solve the open problem of classifying binary quartic forms over $GF(q)$ into $G$-orbits, and then use it to solve the main problem.

Abstract:This paper is a contribution towards a solution for the longstanding open problem of classifying linear systems of conics over finite fields initiated by L. E. Dickson in 1908, through his study of the projective equivalence classes of pencils of conics in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$, for $q$ odd. In this paper a set of complete invariants is determined for the projective equivalence classes of webs and of squabs of conics in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$, both for $q$ odd and even. Our approach is mainly geometric, and involves a comprehensive study of the geometric and combinatorial properties of the Veronese surface in $\mathrm{PG}(5,q)$. The main contribution is the determination of the distribution of the different types of hyperplanes incident with the $K$-orbit representatives of points and lines of $\mathrm{PG}(5,q)$, where $K\cong\mathrm{PGL}(3,q)$, is the subgroup of $\mathrm{PGL}(6,q)$ stabilizing the Veronese surface.

Abstract:This paper presents an approach for extracting points from conic intersections by using the concept of pencils. This method is based on QC2GA—the two-dimensional version of QCGA (Quadric Conformal Geometric Algebra)—that is demonstrated to be equivalent to GAC (Geometric Algebra for Conics). A new interpretation of QC2GA and its objects based on pencils of conics and point space elements is presented, enabling the creation, constraining, and exploitation of pencils of conics. A Geometric Algebra method for computing the discriminants and center point of a conic will also be presented, enabling the proposition of an algorithm for extracting points from a conic intersection object.

Abstract:We prove that, given a partition of the point-set of $PG(3,q), q=2^n >2$, by ovoids $\{\theta_i\}^q_{i=0}$ of $PG(3,q)$ and a line $\ell$ of $PG(3,q)$, not tangent to $\theta_0$ if $\ell^\perp$ denotes the polar of $\ell$ relative to the symplectic form on $PG(3,q)$ whose isotropic lines are the tangent lines to $\theta_0$, then $\ell$ and $\ell^\perp$ are tangent to distinct ovoids $\theta_j, \theta_k$, both distinct from $\theta_0$. This uses the fact that the radical of the linear code generated by the dual duals $\ell\cup \ell^\perp$ of the hyperbolic quadrics , with $\ell$ and $\ell^\perp$ as above, is of codimension $1$

A set of points of is called a quadratic set if it intersects each plane of in a possibly reducible conic of , i.e. in a singleton, a line, an irreducible conic, a pencil of two lines or the whole of . A quadratic set is called good if at most two of these possibilities occur as ranges over all planes of . Good quadratic sets can come into 15 possible types and in earlier work we already discussed 11 of these types. The present paper is devoted to the four remaining types.
