Abstract:A basic mechanism study suggest that the effects of government subsidies on enterprises' productivities would be closely related to the amount of subsidy income they received. Then, this article introduces the newly developed generalized propensity score(GPS) methodology that allows for continuous treatment, that is,different levels of the subsidy degree firms received,to analyze the relationship between a firm's subsidy income-sales ratio and its productivity variation.Using the GPS method and a large panel data set for the Chinese industrial firms,we mainly find that: While a firm's subsidy income-sales ratio is lower than a critical value, such subsidy can significantly improve the firm's productivity; As the subsidy income-ratio increases gradually up this critical value, such improvement becomes insignificant, and the negative effect on firm's productivity variation also begins to show; While the income-sales ratio continues to rise and gets to another greater critical value, the government subsidies obviously inhibit the firm's productivity growth. Therefore, the government should be vigilant about the subsidy-seeking behavior or adverse selection behavior caused by the high degree of subsidies.
