Abstract:The mechanism is put forward that is controlling surround rock of gateway driven along goaf in fully mechanized top coal caving face based on analysis of stress distribution around a coal face and theory of consolidating rock strength with bolt support. The stability of the surround rock is guaranteed by high strength bolt support bonded with resin grout. The high strength bolt is adaptive to high stress and large deformation of surrounding rock, because it can increase the strength of the surrounding rock, provide with high resistance support and big percentage elongation. Ended with an engineering instance, a new kind of successful supporting technique is introduced.

Abstract:Grouting cable is one of the most critical technologies in mine support. However, there are few studies on the effect of post-peak residual strength of cement grout under direct shear testing, which is of great significance for evaluating the bearing capacity of grouting cables in the whole life cycle. Hence, in this study, we carried out a systematic direct shear test to reveal the shear characteristics of cement grout under both constant normal loading (CNL) and constant normal stiffness (CNS) boundary conditions. The test results show that, under the same initial normal stress, the peak shear strength of the cement grout obtained under the CNS boundary conditions is greater than that under the CNL boundary conditions. The high initial normal force reduces the effect of boundary conditions on the post-peak mechanical shear properties of the cement specimens. Moreover, under CNS boundary conditions, the acoustic emission activity of the sample has an obvious signal before the peak shear strength, accompanied by multiple large ringing counts, indicating that the internal damage of the cement grout starts before the peak intensity. This work enhances the understanding of cement grouting fracture characteristics in mining support engineering.

Failure mechanism of bolting support and high-strength bolt-grouting technology for deep and soft surrounding rock with high stress

Abstract:In deep underground mining, the surrounding rocks are very soft with high stress. Their deformation and destruction are serious, and frequent failures occur on the bolt support. The failure mechanism of bolt support is proposed to solve these problems. A calculation theory is established on the bond strength of the interface between the anchoring agent and surrounding rocks. An analysis is made on the influence law of different mechanical parameters of surrounding rocks on the interfacial bond strength. Based on the research, a new high-strength bolt-grouting technology is developed and applied on site. Besides, some helpful engineering suggestions and measures are proposed. The research shows that the serious deformation and failure, and the lower bond strength are the major factors causing frequent failures of bolt support. So, the bolt could not give full play to its supporting potential. It is also shown that as the integrity, strength, interface dilatancy and stress of surrounding rocks are improved, the bond strength will increase. So, the anchoring force on surrounding rocks can be effectively improved by employing an anchoring agent with high sand content, mechanical anchoring means, or grouting reinforcement. The new technology has advantages in a high strength, imposing pre-tightening force, and giving full play to the bolt supporting potential. Hence, it can improve the control effect on surrounding rocks. All these could be helpful references for the design of bolt support in deep underground mines.

Abstract:The grouted bolt, combining rock bolting with grouting techniques, provides an effective solution for controlling the surrounding rock in deep soft rock and fractured roadways. It has been extensively applied in numerous deep mining areas characterized by soft rock roadways, where it has demonstrated remarkable control results. This article systematically explores the evolution of grouted bolting, covering its theoretical foundations, design methods, materials, construction processes, monitoring measures, and methods for assessing its effectiveness. The overview encompassed several key elements, delving into anchoring theory and grouting reinforcement theory. The new principle of high pretensioned high-pressure splitting grouted bolting collaborative active control is introduced. A fresh method for dynamic information design is also highlighted. The discussion touches on both conventional grouting rock bolts and cable bolts, as well as innovative grouted rock bolts and cables characterized by their high pretension, strength, and sealing hole pressure. An examination of the merits and demerits of standard inorganic and organic grouting materials versus the new inorganic–organic composite materials, including their specific application conditions, was conducted. Additionally, the article presents various methods and instruments to assess the support effect of grouting rock bolts, cable bolts, and grouting reinforcement. Furthermore, it provides a foundation for understanding the factors influencing decisions on grouted bolting timing, the sequence of grouting, the pressure applied, the volume of grout used, and the strategic arrangement of grouted rock bolts and cable bolts. The application of the high pretensioned high-pressure splitting grouted bolting collaborative control technology in a typical kilometer-deep soft rock mine in China—the soft coal seam and soft rock roadway in the Kouzidong coal mine, Huainan coal mining area, was introduced. Finally, the existing problems in grouted bolting control technology for deep soft rock roadways are analyzed, and the future development trend of grouted bolting control technology is anticipated.

Abstract:High-strength bolts have become indispensable support materials in geotechnical engineering, but the incidence of safety accidents caused by bolt fractures under complex geological conditions is increasing. To address this challenge, this study focuses on a typical roadway in the Xinjulong coal mine, employing a combination of mechanical performance testing, microscopic and macroscopic analyses to investigate the failure mechanism of bolt breakage. The research indicates that the cracks in the failed bolts underground exhibit subcritical patterns, with the presence of oxides and Cl elements, and multiple intergranular fractures internally, consistent with the characteristics of stress corrosion failure. Additionally, inherent defects in the bolts are also a primary cause of failure. For instance, for type A bolts, the levels of P and S elements significantly exceed the normative requirements, forming inclusions, while the low content of elements like Si and V leads to reduced plasticity, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Furthermore, the excessive pitch in type A bolts leads to stress concentration and cracking under complex loads. The study concludes that the synergistic effect of stress corrosion cracking and inherent flaws in bolts are the main causes of failure. Therefore, it is recommended to enhance the reliability and safety of bolt support by optimizing the bolt shape and developing anti-corrosion bolts, thereby achieving long-term stability in underground engineering.

Abstract:The surrounding rock control of weakly cemented soft rock in the Jurassic strata roadway in the Northwest Mining Area has become one of the bottlenecks restricting mines' safety and efficient production. Based on the engineering background of the +170 m mining level West Wing main return-air roadway of Dananhu No. 5 Coal Mine (DNCM) in Hami Xinjiang, through field investigation and borehole peeping, the deformation and failure characteristics of the surface and depth of the roadway surrounding rock under the original support scheme were mastered. The geological composition features of the typical weakly cemented soft rock (sandy mudstone) in the study area were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) experiments. Through the water immersion disintegration resistance experiment, variable angle compression-shear experiment, and the theoretical calculation, the degradation trend of the weakly cemented soft rock hydromechanical properties was systematically revealed from the following three aspects: the water immersion disintegration resistance of sandy mudstone, the influence characteristics of water on sandy mudstone mechanical performance, and the plastic zone radius of the surrounding rock under the action of water-rock coupling. Based on that, the roadway surrounding rock control measures of "timely and active support, pay attention to the surface protection components and block the water inflow channels" were proposed. The support optimization scheme of "bolt mesh cable beam shotcrete grout" is designed pertinently, and the engineering application was executed on-site. The results demonstrated that the support optimization scheme had shown excellent application effectiveness, with an average reduction of 58.37% in the range of rock fracture compared to the original support scheme. The maximum relative displacement between the roof-to-floor and rib-to-rib is only 121 and 91 mm, respectively, which can ensure the long-term safety and stability of the roadway.

Abstract:The elastic elongation of the bolt itself is insufficient to meet the surrounding rock deformation in deep high-stress roadway, resulting in a large number of breakage of the bolt and the instability of the surrounding rock. Aiming at this problem, this paper proposed a new prestressed yield bolt with the engineering background of Shangping roadway in Huafeng Coal Mine. Based on the analysis of instability of Shangping roadway surrounding rock, the structure, characteristics and mechanical properties of the prestressed yield bolt was investigated. The yielding properties and deformation process of different yielding members were researched in detail. According to the engineering background, the yielding support scheme were designed and applied. The results showed that the yielding effect of yielding pipe was more obvious than that of the wooden pallet. The yielding load, the maximum yielding deformation, the yield stability coefficient of the designed yielding pipe were 190 kN, 25 mm, 1.6 kN/mm, respectively. The stability forces of the bolts in the roof, the top corner of the right side and the bottom corner of the left side of the roadway were almost the same. The overall deformation of the roadway controlled by the yielding support scheme was not large. So, the yielding pipe protected the bolt-rod from being damaged due to excessive deformation, thereby realizing the yield bolt to control the stability of the roadway surrounding rock for a long time.

Abstract:The interaction of the rebar bolt profile with the surrounding medium is investigated analytically. The grout/bolt interface failure is categorised into dilational slip and parallel shear failure based on experimental observations. For each failure mode, an analytical expression for the failure is derived after introducing Mohr–Coulomb׳s failure criterion. The theoretical predictions are compared to, and showed good agreement with, experimental data. After introducing the concept of the most vulnerable slip angle in dilational slip failure, the role of the rebar profile is identified quantitatively with respect to bond failure. It is found that the optimal profile geometry is related to the mechanical properties of the grout and the confining pressure when failure occurs. Therefore, bolt profile studies must take into account the mechanical properties of the grout and confine pressure. In addition, conclusions drawn from laboratory pull out tests should be evaluated properly considering both the testing and in-situ conditions before any application. A case study has been included to demonstrate the application of the developed theory. In a coal mine roadway primary reinforcement design, rock bolts have to be selected out of the four most popular types currently used in the Australian mining industry. The advantages and disadvantages of each bolt are discussed analytically for each case, providing a way for engineers to select the optimal bolt in their application.
Full-Stress Anchoring Technology and Application of Bolts in the Coal Roadway

Abstract:The traditional anchoring method of bolts has insufficient control over the surrounding rock of the coal roadway. Based on this background, full-stress anchoring technology of bolts was proposed. Firstly, a mechanical relationship model of a bolt-drawing, anchoring interface was established to obtain the equations of the axial force and obtain shear stress distribution as well as the decreasing-load transfer law of the anchoring section of bolts. Through studying the prestress-loading experimental device of bolts, we found that increasing the initial preload could increase the axial force under the same conditions and the retarded anchoring section could control the axial-force loss of bolts in the middle of the anchoring section. Under the full-stress anchoring mode, the effect of applying a pre-tightening force was better than that of applying a pre-tightening force under traditional anchoring methods. Moreover, FLAC3D (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua 3D; ITASCA (Ita sca International Inc), Minnesota, USA) numerical simulation calculation was performed. Under the full-stress anchoring mode of bolts, the increased anchoring length reduced the damage of the anchoring section, with a wider control range of the rock formation and higher strength of the compressive-stress anchoring zone. Based on the above research, four methods for applying the full-stress anchoring technology of bolts in engineering were proposed. The full-stress anchoring technology of bolts in the coal roadway has been applied in the support project of the return-air roadway at working face 3204 of the Taitou Coking Coal Mine of the Xiangning Coking Coal Group, Shanxi. The maximum moving distance of the roof and floor of the roadway was reduced from 200 to 42 mm, and the maximum moving distance on both coal sides was reduced from 330 to 86 mm. The full-stress anchoring technology of bolts was able to control the surrounding rock in the coal roadway.

Abstract:Grouting cable bolt was employed to control the stability of the retaind goaf side gateraod (RGSG) in the Panyidong coalmine by considering severe stress disturbances and soft rock mechanics associated in deep mining environment. To have a deep insight of the effectiveness of the grouting cable bolt supporting on the stability control of the deep RGSG, a FLAC3D numerical model was built according to the geotechnical condition of the Panyidong coalmine, in which strain softening constitutive material was introduced to model the softening behavior of the surrounding rock supported by end-anchored cable bolt or grouting cable bolt. Simulated results demonstrated that: Confining stress release during roadway driving and stress concentration during longwall face retreating are the main driving force to the large deformation of the RGSG supported by end-anchored cable bolt; Grouting cable bolt supporting can improve the stability of the deep RGSG considerably thought providing high bolting strength and grouts injection, and ideally, the RGSG's roof sag and right coal rib convergence making main contributions to the RGSG section shrinkage could be reduced by 22.0% and 23.0%, 26.6% and 29.4%, 30.2% and 34.9% when the RGSG is supported by grouting cable bolt I, II and III, respectively. Field application also verified that the integrity of the surrounding rock of RGSG was improved and the residual section of the RGSG was large enough to reserve for the second longwall panel mining when the grouting cable bolt technology was applied in the Panyidong coalmine with 850 m depth.

Abstract:This study presents stability analyses and a cable bolt support design for a typical deep large-span stope (1-1# stope) at the Hongtoushan mine in China, using an integrated empirical and numerical method. Detailed field work including quantification of joint distribution and surface quality, along with laboratory test on intact rock samples, were performed to obtain the geotechnical properties of rock masses. The rock mass of the 1-1# stope was characterized by rock mass rating (RMR), rock mass quality (Q), and geological strength index (GSI), and then the modulus, peak strength, cohesive strength, and internal friction angle of the rock mass were estimated. The stability of the stope was then evaluated by empirical (RMR, stability graph) and numerical approaches (limit equilibrium analyses with UNWEDGE and stress-strain analyses with FLAC3D), considering of the effects of rock mass quality, induced stress, and large-span. A cable bolt support system obtained from the empirical method, was then further analyzed using the FLAC3D and UNWEDGE codes. The results show that the maximum plastic zone thickness and vertical displacement at the stope roof decrease significantly and the safety factor of the unstable wedge block increases significantly after installing the cable bolt support systems recommended by the empirical method. Therefore, it is suggested that an integrated empirical and numerical method is used to obtain quantitative stability assessment and optimum cable bolt support design for deep large-span stope roofs.

Abstract:As nonlinear large deformation occurs in deep soft rock roadway,single supporting mode can hardly work.Bolt and grouting coupling support is an active method to combine bolt support with grouting reinforcement,which can alter mechanical parameters of surrounding rocks so as to enhance strength of surrounding rocks.Based on engineering practices located at the central stone-door in Xing'an Coal Mine,this paper analyzes the characteristics of bolt and grouting support.According to the academic analysis and practical application,the bolt and grouting support can considerably improve the capacity and strength of surrounding rocks,which is an effective way to control the deformation in deep soft rock roadway.

Abstract:Maoxian Tunnel is located in a high-stress region and has undergone over 1.0 m of horizontal deformation, which has caused concrete cracking in the initial support and the failure of full-length grouted rock bolts owing to extrusion. Investigations revealed that higher water-cement ( w / c ) ratios lead to higher grout volume shrinkage ( V s ), consistency, and inadequate borehole filling. Combined with the lower compressive strength of grouting, this results in weak rock-bolt bonding. The wet contact interface further reduces the ultimate bearing capacity of the interface. Therefore, the rock bolts are squeezed out and fail. Reducing V s by adopting a smaller w / c ratio and optimizing the w / c agents can enhance the grout's compressive strength. Additionally, the strength of the rock–bolt interface is improved in soft rock. The varying bolt length significantly influences the rock deformation control, but the tunnel stress relaxation in areas with high geo-stress extends beyond 8.0 m. Strengthening support structures and expediting installation are both crucial measures for resisting structural forces in such environments.

Abstract:Due to good corrosion resistance and high tensile strength, glass fiber–reinforced plastic (GFRP) bolts are widely used in mining operations. However, GFRP bolts are susceptible to blast load damage, so it is important to understand their dynamic mechanical behavior. This experiment constructed a dynamic testing system to simulate the in situ rock bolt dynamic loading conditions. Using strain gauges, the axial load signals at different locations along the bolt were recorded and the corresponding axial stresses were analyzed. Moreover, a numerical model was established to analyze the axial stress distribution along the bolt under dynamic loading. The results showed that the maximum axial stress of GFRP bolt occurs at the bolt collar position and increases approximately linearly as the impact load increases. The axial stress decreased within a short distance from the bolt collar position following approximately an exponential function. In addition, the stronger the mechanical properties of the surrounding rock, the faster the axial stress decreases along the bolt and the greater the increasing rate of the maximum axial stress with an increase of the impact load. The location and increased characteristics of the maximum axial stress in metal and GFRP bolt were similar, but the dynamic load significantly affected the existence range and decreasing rate of axial stress in GFRP bolts than in metal bolts.

Abstract:In this study, the analysis and control of stability of surrounding rock in deep fractured soft rock roadway located in the underground mine of Jinfeng gold mine in Guizhou Province, China, has been investigated. The surrounding rock of roadway has been analyzed to characterize its deformation and failure mechanism through field survey, testing of rock physical and mechanical properties, in situ stress measure, analysis of mineral components of rock, and investigation of rock fragmentation degree. Based on the numerical simulation technology, the influence of different factors on the stability of roadway is studied. The physical and mechanical properties of surrounding rock and the bearing capacity of surrounding rock layer are to be improved to maintain the stability of broken soft rock roadway as high ground stress, rock fragmentation, and poor lithology leading to tunnel instability. Hence, a high-strength “cable bolt + fiber-reinforced shotcrete + steel mesh + split sets + resin bolt + cement grouting” combined support system has been proposed to improve the effective bearing structure significantly with high integrity and bearing capacity.

Anchorage performance of a new rebar bolt under different surrounding rock strength and borehole depth

Abstract:The theory and technology of rock bolting are fundamental research topics for strata control in civil and mining engineering. Rebar bolts are commonly used for roadway primary support in underground coal mine. To adapt to deep resource mining, a new left threaded rebar bolt has been developed. Compared to conventional rebar bolts, the result of installation test showed that the new bolt reduced of 41.5% and 57.9% in stirring resistance force and torque, respectively. In laboratory pullout tests, PVC and aluminum sleeves were used to simulate weak and medium strength surrounding rocks. The average peak pullout force, displacement at the peak load and energy absorption increased by 27%, 107% and 108%, respectively, using PVC sleeve; and increased by 113%, 109% and 212%, respectively, using aluminum sleeve. Field tests were conducted under soft coal, hard coal and medium strength rock geo-conditions. Different borehole depths were selected to precisely calculate the average anchorage performance of the new bolt. Results showed that the average peak pullout force of the new bolt increased by 37%, 38% and 28%, respectively, under different surrounding rock conditions. Moreover, based on on-site test results, the pullout curves in field-testing were summarised and classified into 6 different patterns, which were discussed from a viewpoint of causality mechanism. The research findings validate that the newly developed bolt has better anchorage performance compared to conventional rebar bolts, making it a new anchorage material for deep resource mining.

Abstract:In order to study the stability control mechanism of deep soft rock roadway and the active support technology of the anchor-grouting flexible bolt, this paper takes the west wing transportation roadway of Yuandian No. 2 Coal Mine of Huaibei Mining Co., Ltd., Huaibei, China as the research background. By analyzing the occurrence conditions and failure characteristics of the surrounding rock of the west wing transportation roadway and the structural characteristics and mechanical properties of the anchor-grouting flexible bolt, combined with the elastic–plastic and superimposed arch theory analysis, the superposition community theoretical model and the superposition joint support scheme of "bolt (cable) + anchor net + anchor-grouting flexible bolt + shotcrete support" are proposed. The reliability of the combined support scheme is analyzed by FLAC 3D numerical simulation software and field experiment. The results show that the maximum roof-to-floor convergence and two-side convergence of the west wing transportation roadway are only 30.7 mm and 27.1 mm after adopting the combined support scheme, and the deep displacement variation is within 7 mm, which can effectively maintain the stability of the roadway. The combined support scheme has a certain reference value for other similar roadways.

Abstract:Traditional supports are difficult to maintain the route work of roadway in deep well due to dynamic pressure propagation within soft rock. To tackle this problem, concrete-filled steel tube support is developed; and further the mechanical properties of the support are tested in laboratory. The experimental supports are composed by four sections of φ140 mm × 4.5 mm steel tube, with concrete C40, and joints with casing linkage. Under the conditions of lateral constraint and vertical point load pressure, the ultimate bearing capacity of experimental support is about 1504.1 kN; and the vertical ultimate compressive deformation reaches 82.65 mm, resulting in failure mode of steel tube. Compared with the U-shaped steel support, concrete-filled steel tube support holds not only high supporting capacity, but also with a competitive price. So concrete-filled steel tube structure may have an extensive application to coal mine roadway.
