Abstract:Historical studies indicated that the Five-Emperor Period described in "Historical Records"means a time interval,for example,6-4kaBP,rather than only five emperors,though where five emperors were outlined such as Huangdi,Zhuanxu,Diku,Tangyao,and Yushun.While,not only the Huaxia Group,but also Dongyi and Miaoman Groups were active in this period,so geographical coverage of the Period was not limited within central China,but extended to the east coast region and middle reaches of Changjiang River Valley.Archaeological studies showed that time interval of 6-4kaBPwas being in the late Neolithic Age,the later part of which was in the Chalcolithic Age.Mid to late Yangshao and Longshan culture were developed over the central China,and Dawenkou and(Shandong) Longshan culture predominated over the east China.The timing of 3500BC was being in the joining point between middle and late part of Yangshao culture,and between early and middle part of Dawenkou culture.Environment-Archaeological studies proved that 6-4kaBP was a time when the climate changed from moist to dry characteristics.There are a lot of evidences to show that the climate was wet in 6.0-5.6kaBP,and dry in about 4kaBP.At the same time,two events of abrupt climate change were found in 5.5kaBP and 4.2-4.0kaBP.Modern observational data of climate and modeling studies provided evidences that precession change made the climate changing from wet in middle to dry phase in late Holocene.However,abrupt change of climate in 5.5kaBP and 4.2-4.0kaBP may associate with the abrupt reduction of the Thermohaline Circulation over the North Atlantic,and latter may caused by the weakness of solar activity.
