Abstract:The temperature dependence of resistivity obtained in the sol-gel prepared polycrystalline La_ 2/3 Ca_ 1/3 MnO_3 samples is quantitatively studied in terms of a model recently proposed for ferromagnetic metallic granular systems. From this study,the grain boundary effect on the electrical transport is discussed for polycrystalline manganites.

Abstract:By solving the Boltzmann transport equation and considering the spin-dependent grain boundary scattering, the distribution of electrons in grains and the electrical transport properties in the applied magnetic field are studied. With regard to the dominant influence of grain boundary scattering which is taken as a boundary condition for the electrical transport, the grain size-dependent electrical conductivity is investigated. In addition, the reorientation of the relative magnetization between grains brings the change of the electron spin when the magnetonanocrystalline material is subjected to the magnetic field, resulting in the remarkable giant magnetoresistance effect.

Abstract:Using the sol–gel spin-coating method, La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 polycrystalline films have been prepared. The polycrystalline films show much lower resistivity peak temperature Tp than that of the corresponding epitaxial film, and Tp shifts to higher temperature when the annealing temperature increases. The magnetization measurement reveals that all of the polycrystalline films have the same magnetic transition temperature as the corresponding epitaxial films. These results are different from the previous works. We ascribe the difference to the grain size of our polycrystalline samples being much smaller, so the conduction through the grain boundaries predominates over the intragrain conduction. In this case, spin disorder and magnetocrystalline anisotropy should be taken into account in explaining the magnetotransport behavior.

Abstract:In the present study we have measured the resistivity of polycrystalline bulk sample as well as epitaxial film of La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field, and discussed the large discrepancies between them in details. Using an appropriate model, we have calculated the grain boundary (GB) contribution to the total resistivity of La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 bulk sample and obtained the temperature dependence and magnetic depend-ence of grain boundary resistivity. The resistivity of grain boundaries is much larger and its metal-insulator transi-tion temperature is lower than intrinsic resistivity of crystal grains. Moreover, the grain boundary resistivity pres-ents a novel positive magnetoresistance (MR) at temperatures above its metal-insulator transition temperature. We argue that the grain boundary is a phase separation system rather than a homogenous phase, and the giant negative volume magnetostriction (GVM) of the ferromagnetic-metallic clusters at lower magnetic fields leads to the positive MR effect.

Abstract:The low field magnetotransport of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) films grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrates has been investigated. A high qualtity LSMO film exhibits anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and a peak in the magnetoresistance close to the Curie temperature of LSMO. Bi-epitaxial films prepared using a seed layer of MgO and a buffer layer of CeO$_2$ display a resistance dominated by grain boundaries. One film was prepared with seed and buffer layers intact, while a second sample was prepared as a 2D square array of grain boundaries. These films exhibit i) a low temperature tail in the low field magnetoresistance; ii) a magnetoconductance with a constant high field slope; and iii) a comparably large AMR effect. A model based on a two-step tunneling process, including spin-flip tunneling, is discussed and shown to be consistent with the experimental findings of the bi-epitaxial films.

Abstract:The effect of grain boundaries on the electromechanical response of a ferroelectric polycrystal subjected to an electric field or stress is investigated numerically by using a phase field model. The grain boundaries in the phase field model are regarded as dielectrics in which the ferroelectric properties are degraded completely. The phase field simulations show that the presence of dielectric grain boundaries results in a large build-in depolarizing field in grains. The depolarizing field has a significant influence on the coercive field, the switching behaviour of ferroelectric domain under an electric field or stress, and the piezoelectric and dielectric properties of the ferroelectric polycrystal. It is found that both coercive field and remnant polarization decrease with the increase of the thickness of dielectric grain boundary. However, the piezoelectric coefficient and permittivity of the ferroelectric polycrystal become larger when the thickness of dielectric grain boundary increases. The enhancement of dielectric and piezoelectric properties by the dielectric grain boundary suggests a new degree of freedom to tune the electromechanical response of ferroelectric polycrystalline materials. Abstract:Nanocrystalline La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films are fabricated on Si(100) substrates by sol–gel method. The annealing temperature dependence of grain size, film morphology and transport properties is investigated. The films with less texture exhibit a large magnetoresistance that is both low-field sensitive and relatively temperature independent over a wide temperature range. In addition, when the temperature is far below Tc, the resistivity increases rapidly with decreasing temperature. This effect has been attributed to the spin-polarized tunneling between grain boundaries.

Abstract:Grain boundaries in Sr-doped LaMnO3 thin films have been shown to strongly influence the electronic and oxygen mass transport properties, being able to profoundly modify the nature of the material. The unique behaviour of the grain boundaries can be correlated with substantial modifications of the cation concentration at the interfaces, which can be tuned by changing the overall cationic ratio in the films. In this work, we study the electronic properties of La0.8Sr0.2Mn1-yO3 thin films with variable Mn content. The influence of the cationic composition on the grain boundary and grain bulk electronic properties is elucidated by studying the manganese valence state evolution using spectroscopy techniques and by confronting the electronic properties of epitaxial and polycrystalline films. Substantial differences in the electronic conduction mechanism are found in the presence of grain boundaries and depending on the manganese content. Moreover, the unique defect chemistry of the nanomaterial is elucidated by measuring the electrical resistance of the thin films as a function of oxygen partial pressure, disclosing the importance of the cationic local non-stoichiometry on the thin films behavior.

Abstract:Polycrystalline samples La(2/3)Cal(1/3)MnO(3) (LCMO), La2/3(Ca0.5Ba0.5)(1/3)MnO3 (LCBMO), La2/3Ba1/3MnO3 (LBMO), La-2/3(Sr0.5Ba0.5)(1/3)MnO3 (LSBMO) and La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) have been prepared by a solid state reaction method. We have observed the temperature dependences of the electric resistivity and magnetoresistance from 77 K up to 800 K. Experimental results indicate that the presence of grain boundaries in the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) materials prepared by the mechanical alloyed method leads to a large magnetoresistance effect at low temperature, and there exists a pronounced metal-semiconductor transition around T-C. According to the models of spin-polarized electron tunneling and percolation, the magnetoresistance as a function of temperature has been explained well. The temperature dependence of resistivity at high temperature is well fit by nonadiabatic small polaron hopping model for LCBMO and LSBMO samples, and their activation energies are obtained. Also it has been found that annealing processing affects the resistivity significantly.

The factors that arouse and influence the grain-boundary blocking behavior were analyzed and some existing models, especially the widely-adopted "brick layer model", for describing the grain-boundary effect were discussed.

Abstract:The electronic transport behavior of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 polycrystalline thin films has been investigated under various applied currents. The electric resistance was decreasing with increasing electric current, and ER can reach 30% with a 1 mA current. The electric current can also change the magnetoresistance of the films. Considering the effect of grain boundary, a spin polarized current model has been proposed to explain the results.

Abstract:Fine grain manganese perovskites La1-xSrxMnO3 have been synthesized by using the inorganic sol-gel method. The grain size-dependent and the doping level-dependent magnetic transport properties in the fine grain system have been studied. The interfacial tunneling associated with the double exchange interaction and the corresponding tunnel-type magnetoresistance have been observed in the samples with an average grain size no greater than 0.12 μm in the doping range 0.05≤x≤0.45 for temperatures below the Curie point. The magnetization, the heat capacity, and the oxygen stoichiometry for the sample system have been measured to demonstrate that the interfacial tunneling originates from the difference in magnetic configuration between the surfaces and the cores of the grains, and the corresponding giant magnetoresistance results from the field-induced change of the surface magnetic ordering. © 1999 American Vacuum Society.

Abstract:The transport properties in granular perovskite La0.82Sr0.18MnOz have been investigated. Both a behavior of interfacial tunneling relative to double exchange well below the Curie temperature Tc and the corresponding magnetoresistance have been observed. With grain growth, the interfacial tunneling behavior gradually disappears, while the behavior of intrinsic transport is enhanced. This phenomenon suggests that the grain size-dependent tunneling behavior and giant magnetoresistance in the granular perovskite depend on the magnetic difference between the cores and the surfaces.

Abstract:Here in, we report the charge transport mechanism in semiconducting La0.5Ca0.5Mn0.5Fe0.5O3 (LCMFO) polycrystalline material synthesized via sol–gel auto combustion route. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the orthorhombic phase of the prepared material. Temperature dependent resistivity and impedance spectroscopy measurements have been carried out to probe the dielectric and electrical conduction mechanism which revealed a change of Mott variable range to the small polaronic hopping conduction mechanism around 303 K. The complex impedance and modulus spectra undoubtedly showed the contribution of both grain and grain boundary effect on the conduction properties of LCMFO. An equivalent circuit [(RgbQgb) (RgQg)] model has been used to address the electrical parameters associated with the different phases (grains and grain boundaries) having different relaxation times. The values of resistances of two phases obtained after fitting the equivalent circuit in the nyquist plot have been analyzed which confirmed the change of conduction mechanism around 303 K. The resultant change in conduction mechanism is also supported by the conductivity plots.

Abstract:Based on the spin-polarized intergrain tunneling, the origin of temperature-dependent low-field magnetoresistance (MR) is presented for the polycrystalline manganites. In consideration of the spin-flip intergrain tunneling arising from the Mn ion impurities in the grain-boundary regions, it is shown that the variation of the electronic spin polarization and the inelastic intergrain tunneling induced by the collective excitations of local spins at the grain boundaries are simultaneously responsible for the rapid decay of the low-field MR ratio with increasing temperature. The theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental data of the polycrystalline manganites.

Abstract:We have studied the effect of substrate-induced strain on the properties of thin films of the hole-doped manganite (La1−yPry)0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (y=0.4, 0.5, and 0.6) grown on NdGaO3 (NGO) substrates, in order to distinguish between the roles played by long-range strain interactions and quenched atomic disorder in forming the micrometer-scale phase separated state. We show that a fluid phase separated (FPS) state is formed at intermediate temperatures similar to the strain-liquid state in bulk compounds, which can be converted to a metallic state by applying an external electric field. In contrast to bulk compounds, at low temperatures a strain stabilized ferromagnetic metallic (FMM) state is formed in the y=0.4 and 0.5 samples. However, in the y=0.6 sample a static phase separated (SPS) state is formed similar to the strain-glass phase in bulk compounds. Our results suggest that the substrate-induced strain is a function of temperature. Hence, we show that the temperature induced variation of the long-range strain interactions plays a dominant role in determining the properties of thin films of phase-separated manganites.

Abstract:Interface-dominated materials such as nanocrystalline thin films have emerged as an enthralling class of materials able to engineer functional properties of transition metal oxides widely used in energy and information technologies. In particular, it has been proved that strain-induced defects in grain boundaries of manganites deeply impact their functional properties by boosting their oxygen mass transport while abating their electronic and magnetic order. In this work, the origin of these dramatic changes is correlated for the first time with strong modifications of the anionic and cationic composition in the vicinity of strained grain boundary regions. We are also able to alter the grain boundary composition by tuning the overall cationic content in the films, which represents a new and powerful tool, beyond the classical space charge layer effect, for engineering electronic and mass transport properties of metal oxide thin films useful for a collection of relevant solid state devices.

Abstract:Y and Sr co-doped La 2/3 Ca 1/3 MnO 3 films with different A-site cation disorder were deposited on Yttrium-stabilized ZrO 2 (YSZ) single crystal substrate by modified off-axis rf magnetron sputtering technology. The influences of A-site cation disorder and biaxial strain on the surface morphologies and transport properties are discussed in detail. At high temperature, the mechanism of conduction is changed from the small polaron hopping model to the variable-range hopping model with increasing cation disorder, which reveals that cation disorder induces carrier localization. The Curie temperature and the magnetoresistance decrease with the increase of cation disorder. It reveals the variation of phase separation to be caused by the increasing cation disorder which suppresses the long-range FM metal state.
