Abstract:High manganese steels are widely used as wear- and impact-resistant materials in many areas, especially in the mining, construction, cement, and metallurgy sectors, where it is extremely important to be able to work safely in high-stress conditions as well as resistance to abrasion under heavy loading conditions thanks to their unique work-hardening performance. At this point, the carbon and manganese ratio of the material has a considerable influence on the microstructure of the cast part after the heat treatment. Therefore, heat treatment conditions have to be determined appropriately depending on the chemical composition of the material. In this study, heat treatment processes were applied to high manganese steel specimens having GX120MnCr18-2 DIN standard at various austenitizing temperatures between 1030~1100 oC. The specimens were examined under an optical microscope and SEM/EDS analyses were performed. Impact resistance and hardness values of the above-mentioned specimens were measured via the tests performed with TS EN ISO 148-1 and TS EN 130 6508-1 standards, respectively. From these investigations, it was determined that the carbide solubility increased as the austenitizing temperature increased while the impact resistance first increased and then decreased.
Study of an Economical and Effective Heat Treatment Method to Improve the Performance of Gear Steels

Abstract:During heat treatment, gear steels undergo grain coarsening, so an appropriate heat treatment process that can efficiently control the austenite grain growth and ensure a good performance of gear steels is particularly important. Herein, the influence of a requenching treatment on the comprehensive behavior of low‐carbon alloy steel 20Cr2Ni4 is explored. The pristine steel samples with and without Nb microalloying subjected to conventional quenching and tempering (QT) treatment are compared with the requenched steel sample. The results show that different requenching temperatures considerably impact grain refinement and homogenization. The steel requenched at 830 °C exhibits the greatest tensile strength of 1444 MPa and excellent toughness, comparable to the mechanical properties of the steel upon Nb microalloying after the conventional QT treatment. The formation of twin martensite and uniform fine grains with a high dislocation density together with numerous low‐angle and high‐angle grain boundaries is responsible for the simultaneously improved strength and ductility of the requenched specimen; thus, the proposed requenching heat treatment is a promising, efficient, and reliable method to double‐refine prior austenite grains and their packet and block structures and improve the comprehensive properties with a combination of high strength and toughness, yielding high‐strength gear steel.

Abstract:The equipment in underground mines provides a continuous production flow, depending on the way their quality is preserved during their operation. The TR-7A scraper conveyer subassemblies, which function in the Jiu Valley coal basin and are subjected to abrasion wear, showed a high failure frequency (chains, chain elevators, and driving and turning drums), as well as the hydraulic couplings and certain electric equipment of the same machinery. The data collected following the TR-7A scraper conveyer at work allowed the parameters to be determined that characterise the reliability and maintainability of the above-mentioned components, the failure modes, and their effects. Using calculation methods, the interpretation of the results has been facilitated, with a view to reducing maintenance costs and obtaining an 80% reliability for the components with the most failures, in the case of the TR-7A scraper conveyer.

Abstract:Abstract The choice of heat treatment depends on the service requirements of a given bearing and how the bearing will be made. This article describes the design parameters, material characteristics required to sustain performance characteristics, metallurgical properties, and dimensional stability. It also provides a description of various extensively-used heat treatment processes, namely, carburizing, carbonitriding, induction surface hardening, and nitriding associated with various bearings. In addition, the article explores the factors to be considered in selecting a process and explains why it is optimum for a specific application.

Abstract:The application of electrical contact heating (ECH) in austenitic grain refining of ultra-pure 42CrMoVNb steel was introduced. The ECH equipment was designed to reach uniform heating of uniform heat transfer in the sample. The 42CrMoVNb steel treated possesses uniform microstructure with an average austenite grain size of 1.4 mu m, higher strength (1 538 MPa) and impact toughness (81 J/cm(2)).

Abstract:At the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combine, which uses a large number of machine parts for mining operations, the issue of optimizing the compositions of wear-resistant chromium cast irons while maintaining their operational characteristics has arisen. The paper presents the results of studying the phase composition of the cast alloy, as well as the effect of heat treatment of cast iron with a high chromium content on its structure and properties. As heat treatment operations, quenching in various modes and low tempering were used. The study made it possible to systematize the known literature data on the heat treatment parameters of a group of wear-resistant chromium cast irons, as well as to optimize their heat treatment modes for parts operating in mining and processing industry.

Abstract:High-carbon high-speed steels (HSS) are very abrasion-resistant materials primarily due to their high hardness MC-type carbide and high hardness martensitic matrix. The effects of quenching and tempering treatment on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and abrasion resistance of centrifugal casting high-carbon HSS roll were studied. Different microstructures and mechanical properties were obtained after the quenching and tempering temperatures of HSS roll were changed. With air-cooling and sodium silicate solution cooling, when the austenitizing temperature reaches 1273 K, the metallic matrix all transforms into the martensite. Afterwards, the eutectic carbides dissolve into the metallic matrix and their continuous network distribution changes into the broken network. The second hardening temperature of high-carbon HSS roll is around 793 K. No significant changes in tensile strength and elongation percentage are observed unless the tempering temperature is beyond 753 K. The tensile strength increases obviously and the elongation percentage decreases slightly beyond 753 K. However, the tensile strength decreases and the elongation percentage increases when the tempering temperature exceeds 813 K. When the tempering temperature excels 773 K, the impact toughness has a slight decrease. Tempering at 793-813 K, high-carbon HSS roll presents excellent abrasion resistance.

Abstract:In order to investigate wear resistant of ligh-boron casting steel,the influence of heat-treatment on wear resistant of high-boron casting steel have been investigated by means of optical microscopy,electron probe micro-analyzer(EPMA) and X-ray diffraction(XRD).Comparing with high manganese steel,high chromium cast iron on ML-10.The results showed that high toughness martensite and high hardness boride were the main contributors to better wear resistance.Furthermore,heat treatment could improve the hardness,strength.After impact abrasion,high-boron steel is more wear resistance than high manganese steel.

Abstract:The microstructure of a low-alloy,high-strength,wear-resistant steel which was treated under different heat treatment conditions was observed by using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope(SEM).It is found that the microstructure of the specimen which was quenched into water is a dual phase of martensite and bainite;that quenched and then tempered at 250 ℃ is predominantly tempered martensite;and that quenched and then tempered at 450 ℃ and 600 ℃ is tempered martensite and tempered bainite.The lath of martensite is merged under this heat treatment condition.The specimen which was quenched and then tempered at 250 ℃ has optimal mechanical properties,whose tensile and yield strength reach 1491.4 MPa and 1264.6 MPa,respectively,whose hardness reach 43 HRC,and whose elongation is 9.42%.

Abstract:Cause analysis on the fracture of 40Mn steel chain was carried out by means of hardness tester, optical microscopy, SEM and EDS, and the counter measures for the fracture was put forward.The results show that following causes leading to the fracture of the chain, i.e.the existence of a large number of non-metallic inclusions, serious banded structure in the hot-rolled plate, surface decarburization and insufficient cooling rate during quenching process.And for different causes of the fractured steel chain, corresponding improvement measures such as optimizing steelmaking process, continuous casting, heating and cooling during the quenching process can be taken, which are effective to avoid the fracture chain and improve the percentage of pass.
Heat Treatment Parameters Simulation of Low Alloy Wear Resistant Steel Based on JMatPro Software

Abstract:The phase composition, TTT and CCT curves, Jominy harden-ability of wear-resistant steel ZG30 Si Mn Cr2-Mo VRE were simulated by JMat Pro software in order to design different heat-treatment experimental programs. The results show that the hardness and impact toughness of the alloy are satisfactory when the alloy is water quenched at 930 ℃ and tempered at 230℃.

Abstract:The optimizing experiments on the heat treatment process for the final transmission driven gear made of austempered ductile iron (ADI) were carried out using orthogonal test.The effect of the main alloying elements on ADI was analyzed,and the influences of the austempering process on the mechanical properties of ADI were discussed in detail,moreover,the strain hardening capacity of the ADI was also tested.The experimental results show that an optimized austempering process for the final transmission driven gear in tractor is of austenitizing at 900℃ for 2h and austempering at 290℃ for 1.5h.The ADI treated with this process has a microstructure with the matrix of lower bainite and retained austenite,and possesses an outstanding strain hardening capacity.

Abstract:Ag-Sn-In-Ni-Te alloy ingots were produced through a heating–cooling combined mold continuous casting technique; they were then drawn into wires. However, during the drawing process, the alloy wires tended to harden, making further diameter reduction challenging. To overcome this, heat treatment was necessary to soften the previously drawn wires. The study investigated how variations in heat treatment temperature and holding time affected the microstructure, microhardness and corrosion resistance of the alloy wires. The results indicate that the alloy wires subjected to heat treatment at 700 °C for 2 h not only exhibited a uniform microstructure distribution, but also demonstrated low microhardness and excellent corrosion resistance.

Abstract:In the context of the double carbon target, this study aims to reduce the metal resource consumption caused by the replacement of the failed disc cutter rings of tunnel boring machine (hereafter referred to as cutter rings). For this purpose, for the first time, a cutter-ring remanufacturing method is introduced considering key heat-treatment processes of preheating and post-weld tempering through metal active gas arc welding. First, a finite element model was developed to simulate this remanufacturing process route, establishing the optimal parameter ranges for the preheating and tempering temperatures. Subsequently, a self-developed integrated experimental platform was designed combining heat treatment and surfacing remanufacturing. A three-factor and three-level orthogonal experiment was conducted within the optimized parameter ranges. Further, a weighted comparative and range analysis method is proposed, and the impacts of the critical heat-treatment processes on the remanufacturing performance of the cutter rings exhibiting a uniform wear are investigated, resulting in the identification of the optimal heat-treatment combination. Results revealed that these pivotal heat treatments are instrumental in curbing defects (e.g., cracks) and substantially decreasing the residual stress in remanufactured cutter rings. Furthermore, the post-weld tempering temperature is the primary factor influencing the comprehensive performance and an array of physical and mechanical properties, including indent depth, hardness, shear strength, and impact toughness. The comprehensive performance of the best-produced sample impressively surged by 10.5 % compared to a standard engineering cutter ring.

Abstract:Heat treatment route is an important route for the development of high-strength alloy steel. Many heat treatment processes are applied depending on alloy compositions and desired mechanical properties. There are various high-strength alloy steels, namely, austenitic stainless steel (16–26 wt%Cr, 0.07–0.15 wt%C, 8–10 wt%Ni, rest Fe), where the heat treatment adopted is the low-temperature plasma nitriding so as to achieve a strength in a range of 800–1000 MPa. In twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steel (>20 wt%Mn, <1 wt%C, <3 wt%Si, <3 wt%Al, rest Fe), high-temperature thermomechanical heat treatment provides a strength greater than 1000 MPa. High-speed steel (18 wt%W, 4 wt%Cr, 1 wt%V, 0.7 wt%C, 5–8 wt%Co, rest Fe) suits best for high-speed machining purpose, owing to secondary hardening. Besides, high-temperature annealing is performed with majorly ferritic structure to achieve a maximum bending strength of 4700 MPa. Furthermore, in Hadfield steel (11–14 wt%Mn, 1–1.4 wt%C), a fully austenitic phase is obtained with a strength level of 1000 MPa. High-alloy tool steel (5 wt%Mo, 6 wt%W, 4 wt%Cr, 0.3 wt%Si, 1 wt%V, rest Fe) is provided with austenitizing, quenching, and tempering treatment to achieve a maximum hardness of 1200–1400 HV.
Study of energy-efficient heat resistance and cooling technology for high temperature working face with multiple heat sources in deep mine

Abstract:In the present research, we proposed a scheme to address the issues of severe heat damage, high energy consumption, low cooling system efficiency, and wastage of cold capacity in mines. To elucidate the seasonal variations of environmental temperature through field measurements, we selected a high-temperature working face in a deep mine as our engineering background. To enhance the heat damage control cability of the working face and minimize unnecessary cooling capacity loss, we introduced the multi-dimensional heat hazard prevention and control method called "Heat source barrier and cooling equipment". First, we utilize shotcrete and liquid nitrogen injection to eliminate the heat source and implemented pressure equalization ventilation to disrupt the heat transfer path, thereby creating a heat barrier. Second, we establish divisional prediction models for airflow temperature based on the variation patterns obtained through numerical simulation. Third, we devise the location and dynamic control strategy for the cooling equipment based on the prediction models. The results of field application show that the heat resistance and cooling linkage method comply with the safety requirement throughout the entire mining cycle while effectively reducing energy consumption. The ambient temperature is maintained below 30 °C, resulting in the energy saving of 10% during the high-temperature period and over 50% during the low-temperature period. These findings serve as a valuable reference for managing heat damage in high-temperature working faces.

Abstract:High‐strength bainite steels have been a hot topic in the last decade. In this review, the development of heat treatment technology and surface modification technology of high‐strength bainite steels is introduced. The future research direction of high‐strength bainite steels is prospected based on the current research status and application performance requirements. Bainite steels with high strength, high toughness, and excellent wear resistance are gradually used in railway crossing, rail and wind power bearing, and other fields. The rapid development of modern industry has made the service environment of bainite steel in the heavy industry more and more harsh, which requires not only good overall performance of bainite steel matrix but also excellent surface properties. A lot of research work has been carried out to improve the properties of the bainite steel matrix and surface. In this review, the development of heat treatment technology of high‐strength bainite steels is introduced, including austempering above and below martensite starting temperature, continuous cooling, and multistep austempering processes. Afterward, the surface modification technology of high‐strength bainite steel is summarized emphatically, including carburizing, surface alloying, laser cladding, and integrated strengthening technology. Finally, the future research direction of high‐strength bainite steel is prospected based on the current research status and application performance requirements.
