Abstract:A novel method to measure the roll angle using a quarter wave plate and a Wollaston prism is presented in this paper. The setup and principle of the measurement system are introduced. According to the optical structure, the mathematical model was established by Jones matrix method. The output voltage from an optical detector located after the Wollaston prism can be used to determine the roll angle. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the sensitivity of roll measurement can reach arc-second. The chief advantages of the sensor are simply, stable and compact. This system can be applied to dynamic roll angle measurement. Experimental results have shown that the angular resolution is 0.04 arc-minute in a ±40 are-minute range.

Abstract:A slot-structure resonator comprised of two orthogonal accelerometers is presented. The device can detect the x- and y-axis accelerations and the z-axis angular velocity at the same time. Variable-area sensing is adopted because of its good linearity and quick response. The resonant frequencies of the x-and y-axis accelerometers are 1.9315 kHz and 1.8403 kHz, respectively. The x-axis accelerometer is driven into resonance. The y-axis accelerometer moves together with the x-axis accelerometer and oscillates along the y-axis due to z-axis angular velocity. The equilibrium positions of the accelerometers change with the corresponding x- and y-axis accelerations. The test results show that the sensitivity of the z-axis angular velocity is 16 mV/((°)·s-1), and those of the x- and y-axis accelerations are 49 mV/g and 244 mV/g, respectively. The noise of the angular velocity output is 0.0138°/(s·√Hz-1) for the z-axis accelerometer, and those of the acceleration velocity output are 0.42 × 10-3 g/√Hz and 0.074 × 10-3 g/√Hz for the x- and y-axis accelerometers, respectively.
Strapdown gyroscope/magnetometer attitude measurement method for spinning missile

Abstract:To solve the problem that high spin-rates of spinning missiles exceed the measuring range of gyroscopes, an integrated attitude measurement method is put forward which uses a 3-axis magnetometer and a 2-axis micro-gyroscope whose sense axis is vertical to the spinning axis of missile. First, an attitude measurement model is established which uses the output of 3-axis magnetometer and the differential pitch derived from missile's spinning rates to calculate the current body attitudes, in which the spinning rates is obtained from 2-axis gyroscope. Then, the method to identify and process the extraneous roots is given. Finally, the simulation is carried out under the situation that the sensor outputs white noise and the missile body swings. The simulation result shows that the attitude errors are smaller than 2° in 100 s with 1800°/s spinning rate, and this method can be used in the dynamical attitude measurement of spinning missiles for it can directly resolve the three attitude angles.

Abstract:Reaction sphere is a new type of actuators for satellite attitude control. Due to its 3D rotation motion, measuring the spin axis of the rotor is of great significance for its closed-loop control. This paper proposes a spin axis measurement method of a reaction sphere based on photoelectric sensors, which obtains the characteristics of non-contact and highly real-time. A sensor placement strategy and a rotor painting strategy are proposed. The analytical model and the optimization methods are developed to calculating the vector of the spin axis. Calculation of the 6 examples verifies the feasibility of the proposed method.
A Measurement Technique On The Hydrodynamic Force On The Free Surface-Piercing Cylinder At A Yawed Angle

Abstract:In order to measure the hydrodynamic force on the free surface-piercing cylinder at a yawed angle, a new force measurement instrument with three tension-compression sensors was developed, and the anemometer output voltage was collected in a PC through a data acquisition card with Labview software, the measuring accuracy for three tension-compression sensors are +/- 0.03% respectively, the sampling rate used was 100HZ, the single length being 180s. The precision of the force measurement instrumentwas checked by comparing to the published results in terms of drag coefficient of the vertical cylinder at Reynolds number from 0.75 x10(4) to 2.2 x10(4), and using the weight, together with the buoyant force acting on the cylinderto valid the precision of the measurement instrument as the hydrodynamic force on the cylinder at an angle of incidence from -30 degrees to 30 degrees. The results show that the new instrument has a high precision for measuring the hydraulic force both on the vertical cylinder and the cylinder at an angle of incidence from -30 degrees to 30 degrees.
Measurement of Spinning Projectile Attitude Based on Polarization Characteristics

Abstract:The attitude of projectile with small volume, huge overload and high speed is difficult to measure. Aiming at this problem,a method adopting Doppler radar was proposed to measure the attitude of spin-stabilized projectile. By slotting grooves at the base, the projectile presented linear polarization scattering characteristics distinctly. The index of amplitude modulation was used to represent the attitude. The relationship between attitude of projectile and the index of amplitude modulation was established through numerical calculation according to geometric structures. The index can be extracted from echo of projectile in shooting range. Thus an equation about the index was established. Assisted with the motion property of projectile, the attitude of the slotted projectile was salved. The simulation analysis shows that the method is effective.

Abstract:The precise measurement of the spin speed of a high-speed autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (HAS-UAV) is a key element in mastering flight stability, and the measurement of roll angle is the key to determining the accuracy of navigation control systems. We put forward a novel method for measuring roll angle. This method starts from the time-frequency domain analysis (TFDA) of the output signal of the geomagnetic sensor, extracts the time-frequency ridge of the time-frequency matrix (TFM) to obtain the spin speed of the HSA-UAV, and reconstructs the output signal of the geomagnetic sensor. It can calculate the roll angle when the calibration parameters of the geomagnetic sensor are unknown and have good engineering practical value. In addition, we also propose an improved nonlinear short-time Fourier transform (INLSTFT) with high-frequency resolution and a forward penalty dynamic path ridge-extraction method (FPDPRM) with frequency jump suppression to extract instantaneous frequency (IF) in the TFM.

Abstract:A low cost, high precision hollow structure MEMS IMU has been developed to measure the roll angular rate of a high-spinning projectile. The hollow MEMS IMU is realized by designing the scheme of non-centroid configuration of multiple accelerometers. Two dual-axis accelerometers are respectively mounted on the pitch axis and the yaw axis away from the center of mass of the high-spinning projectile. Three single-axis gyros are mounted orthogonal to each other to measure the angular rates, respectively. The roll gyro is not only used to judge the spinning direction, but also to measure and compensate for the low rotation speed of the high-spinning projectile. In order to improve the measurement accuracy of the sensor, the sensor output error is modeled and calibrated by the least square method. By analyzing the influence of noise statistical characteristics on angular rate solution accuracy, an adaptive unscented Kalman filter (AUKF) algorithm is proposed, which has a higher estimation accuracy than UKF algorithm. The feasibility of the method is verified by numerical simulation. By using the MEMS IMU device to build a semi-physical simulation platform, the solution accuracy of the angular rate is analyzed by simulating different rotation speeds of the projectile. Finally, the flight test is carried out on the rocket projectile with the hollow MEMS IMU. The test results show that the hollow MEMS IMU is reasonable and feasible, and it can calculate the roll angular rate in real time. Therefore, the hollow MEMS IMU designed in this paper has certain engineering application value for high-spinning projectiles.

Abstract:The Global Positioning System (GPS) signals-based roll angle measurement methods are key technologies for spinning vehicles with side-mounted single patch antenna. Most existing research focuses on attitude measurement at low spin rates, and it is difficult to achieve accurate roll angle measurement at a time-varying situation with high spin rates, and the attitude measurement errors are not modeled and analyzed. A multi-channel roll angle measurement method based on a third-order phase-locked loop is proposed to improve the attitude measurement accuracy and stability. The effects of phase-locked loop (PLL) tracking errors, errors induced by antenna gain, and antenna phase center offset errors are analyzed and verified by simulation. The intermediate frequency (IF) GPS signals received by a single patch antenna are sampled on a testbed to verify the roll angle measurement method. The experiment results show that the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the roll angle measurement is 5° ± 1° at spin rates ranging from 50 to 200 r/s.

Abstract:Surface acoustic wave sensors offer overwhelming advantages over other potentially competitive sensing technologies in rotating mechanical structures for their wireless and passive capability. Nevertheless, the challenges of using these sensors have not been adequately addressed. Radio frequency signal of surface acoustic wave sensors acts as not only the role of data transmission but also the role of energy supply during the sensing system working process. Thus, the performance of surface acoustic wave sensors when they are used to monitor rotating spindles should be investigated due to the harsh metallic environments for radio propagation in machine tool. This article aims to experimentally study the performance of surface acoustic wave sensors on both rotating spindle with Computer Numerical Control machine tool and self-developed spindle apparatus. The measurement study is performed using a temperature surface acoustic wave sensor working in the Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) band (433.05-434.79MHz). Experimental results have shown that transmission and measurement characteristics were closely depended on the surface acoustic wave sensor installation location and rotation speeds. The conclusions will directly guide the sensor location optimization, power setting, errors avoidance, or correction in the future work.

Abstract:To meet the requirements for monitoring the sailing attitude, a real-time sailing attitude measurement system is designed and implemented based on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems(MEMS) gyroscope and accelerometer. Multi-sensor data fusion achieves the high accuracy of attitude measurement. The application of gyroscope can avoid measurement deviations caused by sailing variable motions. The utilization of accelerometer can effectively eliminate gyro drift errors and cumulative calculation errors. Time-variant Kalman filter,as the method of data fusion,can improve the attitude measurement precision and stability greatly. The measurement method has been successfully applied to the real-time attitude measurement system of Laser Sailing with a precision up to o±1 .

Abstract:This paper presents a novel integrated measurement system of pitch angle($eta $ ), phase angle($alpha $ )and speed(${N}_{P}$ ) based on phonic wheel to solve the problem of limited installation space of multiple sensors for multiple propellers’ synchrophasing noise reduction control in a turboprop aircraft. Using a set of symmetrical helical marker teeth to reflect the change of the pitch angle and as a phase angle reference point $alpha _{0}$ , the phonic wheel with novel structure can realize the simultaneous measurement of three parameters. The axial movement of the phonic wheel reflects the pitch angle, and the spacing between the two marker teeth varies with the axial movement. After signal conditioning and rising edge capture, a series of rising edge instants(they are correspond to the arrival time of the teeth) are extracted by microprocessor, and the marker teeth have shorter time intervals than regular teeth. Hence, pitch angle, phase angle and speed can be automatically obtained through microprocessor’s measurement algorithm. Numerical simulation of COMSOL is employed for optimizing the phonic wheel structure. An experimental platform is designed to test the performance of the integrated measurement system. Results demonstrate that the pitch angle error varies linearly with axial displacement due to the influence of marker teeth, and after linear compensation of $eta $ using the interpolation table, the measurement precision of $eta $ , $alpha $ and ${N}_{P}$ can meet the control requirements of turboprop engine.

Abstract:This paper presents a new method for vibratory gyroscopes. A novel special vibration is presented, and when it is taken as a reference vibration, the device can sense two-axis angular velocity. It has a simple structure without suspending structures and high resistance to shock. In addition, an effective driving method is proposed which realizes a desired reference vibration for sensing two-axis angular velocities. The operation principle and coupling effects of our device are analyzed. For improving the sensitivity of the device, the optimal structure (4 mm x 4 mm x 3 mm) and the optimal reference vibration (with a driving frequency of 260.8 kHz and an effective velocity of 20 589.241 mu m s(-1)) are found. We obtain the methods to monitor the desired reference vibration, which are crucial for compensating errors and ensuring the high sensitivity and accuracy of the device. Furthermore, the driving and detecting circuit is designed and a printed circuit board is fabricated. The fabrication process of our device and its output results are given. By a comparison of the measurement and simulation results, the optimal reference vibration of the fabricated device is obtained.

Abstract:This article presents a method for estimating the angular rate and attitude of high-spin objects with free maneuvering such as flying disks or spinning projectiles. A new framework is proposed that utilizes the estimated spin rate for simultaneous gyroscope calibration and 3-D attitude estimation. Previous studies on spin rate estimation based on periodicity analysis, comparatively, have mostly overlooked the phase anomaly effect that may occur when the attitude changes in the nonorthogonal axes. Therefore, this study explains the newly discovered phase anomaly and makes compensation to improve the spin rate estimation performance when the spinning object rotates without any axial constraint. Additionally, a new observation model is proposed, relating the roll rate and gyroscope scale factor using the estimated spin rate. Based on this model, an extended Kalman filter (EKF) is developed to calibrate the gyroscope scale factor and estimate 3-D attitude. To address the time-delay characteristics of the spinning rate used as a measurement, a two-stage cascade EKF (CEKF) is implemented. The performance of the proposed methods is validated through simulations of spinning projectiles at rates of 30 and 60 rotations per second, as well as empirical rotation experiments using turntable. This study distinguishes itself from previous research by including explicit orthogonal rotation with respect to the principal rotation axis, and its performance is demonstrated accordingly.

Abstract:Spin rate of a high-speed spinning-rotor gyroscope will make a significant impact on angular rate sensor performances such as the scale factor, resolution, measurement range, and bias stability. This paper presents the spin rate effects on performance indicators of a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) gyroscope where a free-spinning rotor is electrostatically suspended in an evacuated vacuum cavity and functions as a dual-axis angular rate sensor. Theoretical models of the scale factor and measurement range of such a spinning-rotor gyroscope are derived. The experimental results indicate that the measured scale factors at different settings of the spin rate match well with the theoretical predication. In order to separate the disturbance component of the rotation control loop on the gyroscope output, a testing strategy is proposed by operating the gyroscope at different spin rates. Experimental results on a prototype gyroscope show that the squared drive voltage generated by the rotation control loop is approximately proportional to the noise of the gyroscope output. It was further investigated that an improved performance of such spinning-rotor gyroscopes can be achieved by operating the gyroscope rotor at an optimal spin rate.

Abstract:A measurement method based on digital MEMS’ acceleration sensor is proposed. The paper analyzes the working principle of capacitive acceleration sensor. According to the coordinate space transformation theory, a mathematical model of the measurement method was built, and the mathematical expressions of the angle displacement of aircraft rudder was deduced; A measurement system of aircraft tail wing inclined was established using MEMS’ acceleration ADXL345, and taken STM32 as controller. Setting different angles in 3D turntable and aiming at a typical inclination angles, the aircraft tail rotation angle experiment was simulated, and experiment achieved angle measurement arranging from-90°-90°. Experiment results demonstrate that when the inclination is close to the real inclination of aircraft tail wing, the maximum error is 0.277°, less than 0.3°, which meets the requirement of measurement. For aircraft currently being used, the measurement method can achieve the angle measurement of aircraft tail wing rotating effectively.

Abstract:The high-precision turntable plays a crucial role in the measurement of inertial sensors, aerospace applications, and other fields, and thus, it is imperative to evaluate and measure its angular acceleration error accurately, particularly in a rotating accelerometer gravity gradiometer (RAGG). To address the issues of delay and noise amplification caused by differentiation in traditional measurement methods, such as grating and gyroscope, this article proposes a novel measurement method based on the combination of high-precision accelerometers. First, a numerical model is established through principle derivation followed by obtaining an analytical model through error analysis. Second, the simulation verification and preliminary experimental measurements are conducted. Finally, a comparison experiment with commercial gyroscope is designed to further validate the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that compared to the gyroscope, the proposed method exhibits lower a static noise level: (rad/s2)/Hz at 0.2–5 Hz, which surpasses the performance of high-precision fiber optic gyroscopes by more than one order of magnitude. Therefore, this innovative multiaccelerometer-based method can be considered as a favorable option for measuring angular acceleration with ultralow-noise levels on high-precision turntables.

Abstract:Accurately estimating single-axis rotational angle changes is crucial in many high-tech domains. However, traditional angle measurement techniques are often constrained by sensor limitations and environmental interferences, resulting in significant deficiencies in precision and stability. Moreover, current methodologies typically rely on fixed-axis rotation models, leading to substantial discrepancies between measured and actual angles due to axis misalignment. To address these issues, this paper proposes an innovative method for single-axis rotational angle estimation. It introduces a calibration technique for installation errors between inertial measurement units and the overall measurement system, effectively translating dynamic rotational inertial outputs to system enclosure outputs. Subsequently, the method employs triaxial accelerometers combined with zero-velocity detection technology to estimate the rotation axis position. Finally, it delves into analyzing the relationship between quaternion and axis-angle, aimed at reducing noise interference for precise rotational angle estimation. Based on this proposed methodology, a Low-Cost, a High Accuracy Measurement System (HAMS) integrating sensor fusion was designed and implemented. Experimental results demonstrate static measurement errors below ±0.15° and dynamic measurement errors below ±0.5° within a ±180° range.

Abstract:It′s necessary for signature recognition and calligraphy research to get the attitude information of a pen by mounting accelerometer and gyroscope on it. In this paper, the difference between the two types of sensors is analyzed and compared on the total accuracy of attitude measurement. As a result, accelerometer corrects the attitude angle but is not sensitive to the angular rate, on the other hand, gyroscope measures the attitude angular rate but the accumulated error of attitude angle is large and the initial angle is hard to get. The experimental results show that integrating the two types of sensors will advantage dynamic attitude measurement.
