Abstract:A series of OELD with emission layers consisting of Eu~(3+) complex were designed and studied.Results indicated that the thickness of emission layer should be 10nm in order to obtain good electroluminescene properties.When increasing the voltage,the electroluminscence spectra appears TPD/Alq_3's disturbing signal.

Abstract:The new complex of Eu(BA)_2(MAA)(Phen) is synthesized and is used as a red light-emitting material in our organic electroluminescent devices with the structure of ITO/TPD/Eu(BA)_2(MAA)(Phen).The brightness of 15 cd/m~2 and luminous efficiency of 0.25 lm/W are achieved at the voltage of 26 V. This material has strong photoluminescence and relatively good electroluminescence along with excellent mono-chromaticity.The mechanism of this EL device is discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel Eu3+ polymer named PRL basing on a new Eu-containing monomer was synthesized and was used as a red light-emitting material in our organic electroluminescent device with single layer structure of ITO/PRL/Al. This material had strong photoluminescence, good chromaticity and can transport both holes and electrons. Being a polymer, the device made by use simple spin-coating method in stead of the usual doped spin-coating and vacuum deposition The brightness of 80cd/m(2) was achieved at the voltage of 26V. And we try to explained the mechanism of this EL device according to its photoluminescence, electroluminescence, B-V and I-V characteristic. And we also measured its mobility and explained the reason of its relatively high drive voltage and low luminescence.

Abstract:Using two different trivalent europium (Eu3+) complexes, europium(dibenzoylmethanato)(3)(bathophenanthroline) [Eu(DBM)(3)bath] and europium(dibenzoylmethanato)(3)(monophenanthroline) [Eu(DBM)(3)phen], with different ligands for emission-layer materials, various types of electroluminescent (EL) devices have been fabricated. Combined with a triphenylamine derivative (TPD) and an oxadiazole derivative (OXD7) as hole-transport-layer materials, two-layer-and three-layer-type devices have been fabricated. We find that these two emission-layer materials have similar EL spectra, but their EL performances are different. The EL capability of the Eu complexes and their carrier-transporting characteristics are largely dependent on the ligands. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Abstract:Electroluminescent devices using a ternary europium complex Eu(DBM)3(hhpy)2 (dibenzoylmethane, DBM; hexahydro pyridine, hhpy) as an emitting layer, poly(vinyl-carbazole) (PVK) as a hole-transporting material and tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) as an electron-transporting material have been fabricated. When only using Eu(DBM)3(hhpy)2 as the emitting layer, luminance of 2.52cd/m2 with pure Eu3+ EL emissions from devices is achieved. Introducing a hole transporting material PVK and an electron transporting material 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxidiazole (PBD) in the emitting layer, luminance of 100cd/m2 is achieved, and the eletroluminescence efficiency is enhanced by about two orders of magnitude.

Abstract:Three ternary Eu(III) complexes with general formula of Eu(DBM)3LN (DBM = dibenzoylmethanate, and LN (N = 1-3 ) stand for three different 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives) have been synthesized for vacuum deposition films-based electroluminescent devices. The complex Eu(DBM)3L3 (L3 = 2-phenyl-3-[3-(carbazol-9-yl)propyl]imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenan-throline) was designed with an effort to combine the electron-transporting phenanthroline platform and the hole-transporting carbazole group into one molecule expecting to improve both electron and hole transporting properties simultaneously. The results show that the variation of the neutral ligands in Eu(III) mixed ligand complexes is a simple and effective approach to the improvement in the thermal stability, PL and EL properties of materials. A double-layer device with the configuration of ITO/TPD (50 nm)/Eu(DBM)3L3 (50 nm)/Mg0.9Ag0.1 (200 nm)/Ag (100 nm) exhibited Eu(III)-based pure red emission with a maximum brightness of 561 cd/m2 at 16 V, and an onset driving voltage of 8 V. A device with the configuration of ITO/TPD (50 nm)/[Eu(DBM)3L3 (5 nm):BCP (5 nm)]4/BCP (20 nm)/AIQ (10 nm) Mg0.9Ag0.9 (110 nm)/Ag (100 nm) gave high efficient and pure red light emission with a luminance of 1419 cd/m2.

Abstract:A novel long alkyl chain-containing Eu(III) complex, tris(α-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato)(1-octadecyl-2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole)europium(III), Eu(TTA)3(L18), was designed for electroluminescent (EL) devices. The complex exhibited a low melting point and a large temperature difference between the melting point and onset decomposition compared to a shorter alkyl chain (ethyl) analogue. By vacuum deposition technique, a two-layer ITO/TPD/Eu(TTA)3(L18)/Al and a three-layer ITO/TPD/Eu(TTA)3(L18)/AlQ/Al EL device were fabricated and EL properties of the devices were studied. The two devices gave dominant red light emission from the europium complex with maximum luminance efficiency comparable to the two-layer device made of the short alkyl chain congener.

Abstract:With a europium complex, tris(alpha-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato) bis(triphenylphosphine oxide) europium (Eu(TTA)(3)(TPPO)(2)), as the light-emitting layer, N, N'-diphenyl-N, N'-di(m-tolyl)-benzidine (TPD) as the hole transport layer and tris(8-quinolinolato) aluminum (ALQ) as the electron transport layer, the triple-layer electroluminescent (EL) device emits red light characteristic of Eu3+ emission. However, as the mixture of Eu(TTA)(3)(TPPO)(2) and ALQ is co-evaporated as the light-emitting layer to form a bilayer EL device, a new wide-banded emission peaked at c. 640 nm was obtained. This emission is neither from ALQ nor from the europium complex. The photoluminescence (PL) of the thin film on quartz substrate evaporated from one mixed solid powder of Eu(TTA)(3)(TPPO)(2) and ALQ is composed of distinct PL emissions of Eu(TTA)(3)(TPPO)(2) and ALQ, denying an exciplex formation mechanism. It is impossible to form a host-guest system. We propose that the EL emission peaked at c. 640 nm is from an electroplex route: a transition between the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of Eu(TTA)(3)(TPPO)(2) and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of ALQ. Abstract:Luminescent Eu(II) complexes with characteristic d-f transitions have potential applications in many fields, especially organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), due to their satisfactory advantages including short excited-state lifetimes, 100% theoretical exciton utilization efficiency and tunable emission colors. Up to now, most light-emitting layers in OLEDs are typically fabricated through high-vacuum thermal evaporation process, which is uneconomical for large-area and multi-dopant devices. In this work, eight Eu(II) complexes with substituted tris(2-aminoethyl)amine or triethanolamine ligands are designed and synthesized, and their structural and photophysical properties are studied. These complexes exhibit tunable maximum emission wavelengths in the range of 437-553 nm and high photoluminescence quantum yields up to 75%. Furthermore, this work demonstrates the application of Eu(II) complex in solution-processed OLEDs with high efficiency and luminance for the first time. The optimized device show a maximum external quantum efficiency of 9.2% and a maximum luminance of 1780 cd m(-2) with an emission peak at 485 nm.

Abstract:The electrochemical and electroluminescent properties of some europium complexes and the terpolymers of 9-vinylcarbazole,methyl methacrylate and europium-methacrylate complex were investigated. Cyclic voltammetry measurements of poly(VK-co-MMA-co-Eu(BA)(2)(MAA) phen) (Cl) showed a quasi-reversible oxidation peak with onset of 0.75 V,and an irreversible reduction peak with onset of -1.8 V. The results demonstrated that this kind of multi-functional material has both hole- and electron-transporting properties. Some light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on the europium containing complex and copolymers were fabricated. All these devices exhibited characteristic sharp red electroluminescence when forward biases were applied, and the turn-on voltage was in the range of 12 similar to 27 V. A maximum brightness of 52 cd/m(2) with a luminous efficiency of about 0.031 1m/W was achieved from a single-layer device based on the multi-functional copolymer C3. EL spectra of the devices showed that the emissions were from the corresponding lanthanide-complex units,instead of carbazole groups of the copolymers. It is suggested that the carbazole groups in Cn serve as hole-transport material while electron transfer may occur through the lanthanide-containing moieties of the same copolymer.

Abstract:In order to develop new materials for red electroluminescent devices, a novel ligand, 2-phenyl-imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline (L), and an europium (III) complex with dibenzoylmethanate (DBM), Eu(DBM)3L, was synthesized. The crystal structure of Eu(DBM)3L was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal of Eu(DBM)3L belongs to orthorhombic, space group Pbca with cell dimensions of a=2.1655(6) nm, b=2.0834(5) nm, c=2.6469(7) nm, V=11.942(5) nm3, Z=8, Dx=1.307 g/cm3. Each europium atom is coordinated with six oxygen atoms from three bidentate DBM anions and two nitrogen atoms from one bidentate L, forming a distorted square antiprism. The complex is easily evaporated and can be used as a red light emitting material. Upon improvement, the device with a structure of ITO/N,N′-diphenyl-N,N′-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1′-biphenyl-4,4′-diamine (TPD) (40 nm)/Eu(DBM)3L (50 nm)/2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bathocuproine or BCP) (20 nm)/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (ALQ) (30 nm)/cathode gives off pure red light with luminance of 42 cd/m2 at 16 V.

Abstract:A novel binuclear europium and yttrium β-diketone complex EuY(TTA)6Phen2 was synthesized. The electroluminescent device using it as an emitter was fabricated. When the structure of device is ITO/TPD/EuY(TTA)6Phen2/Alq3/Mg:Ag, the emission peak of 613 nm and the luminance of 99 cd/m2 at 11 V from the device have been achieved. The results showed that the new β-diketone chelate possessed better PL and EL properties, and film formation than those of Eu(TTA)3Phen.

Abstract:The photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) properties of a novel copolymer PVK-co-MMA-co-Eu(BA)2(MAA)phen (PKMEu) were investigated. The significant difference between the PL intensities of the carbazole and the europium complex in different states is attributed to the Förster energy transfer from the carbazole groups to the Eu-complexes. The formation of excimers explained the red-shift of the PL peak of the carbazole group, when PKMEu is in a solid state. PKMEu can form good quality film by spin coating from chloroform solution. The single-layer LED based on PKMEu exhibits characteristic red electroluminescence (EL) of Eu3+ with a turn-on forward bias of 24 V. The device reached a maximum brightness of 0.228 cd/m2 at 29 V, with a luminous efficiency of 2.87×10−4 lm/W. The relatively high turn-on voltage, low brightness and low efficiency may have resulted from the unbalanced charge–transport and the conditions of device fabrication.

Abstract:We investigated the energy transfer and charge trapping (CT) in dye-doped organic light-emitting devices by using the magneto-electroluminescence as a tool. An intra-molecular charge-transfer fluorescent material N,N-diphenyl-4-(9-phenylnaphtho-[2,3-c][1,2,5]thiadiazol-4-yl)aniline was selected as the guest emitter. The tri-(8-hydroxyquinoline)-aluminum and 1,3-bis(9-carbazolyl)benzene were selected as the hosts. Our results demonstrate that as the energy difference between the HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital)/LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) of the host and the guest (ΔEHOMO/ΔELUMO) increases, the CT becomes more dominant, and the CT cannot be ignored even when the ΔEHOMO/ΔELUMO is small and the emission spectrum of the host overlaps the absorption spectrum of the guest well.

Abstract:Stable vacuum deposition of a new europium(III) complex, Eu(DBM)3(L) {DBM=dibenzoylmethanato, L=3-ethyl-2-(4′-dimethylaminophenyl)imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline}, were verified by ultraviolet–visible and infrared spectroscopy. By using the vacuum deposited film of the Eu(III) complex as the emitting layer, aluminum tris(8-hydroxyquinolinate) (AlQ) as electron-transporting layer, 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP) as hole-blocking layer, N,N′-diphenyl-N,N′-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1′-diphenyl-4,4′-diamine (TPD) as hole-transporting layer, a four-layer electroluminescent device of (+)indium–tin oxide/TPD(40 nm)/Eu(DBM)3(L)(40 nm)/BCP(10 nm)/AlQ(40 nm)/Mg:Ag(110 nm)/Ag(60 nm)(−) gave high efficient and pure red light emission with a luminance of 230 cd/m2. A comparison of the electroluminescence properties of the four-layer device with those of a two-layer and a three-layer device was made.

Abstract:The photoluminescence properties of one europium complex Eu(TFNB)3Phen (TFNB = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(naphthyl)-1,3-butanedione, Phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) doped in a hole-transporting material CBP (4,4′-N,N′-dicarbazole-biphenyl) films were studied. A series of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) using Eu(TFNB)3Phen as the emitter were fabricated with a multilayer structure of indium tin oxide, 250Ω/square)/TPD (N,N′-diphenyl-N,N′-bis(3-methyllphenyl)-(1,1′-biphenyl)-4,4′-diamine, 50nm)/Eu(TFNB)3phen (x): CBP (4,4′-N,N′-dicarbazole-biphenyl, 45nm)/BCP (2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-l,10 phenanthroline, 20nm)/AlQ (tris(8-hydroxy-quinoline) aluminium, 30nm)/LiF (1nm)/Al (100nm), where x is the weight percentage of Eu(TFNB)3phen doped in the CBP matrix (1–6%). A red emission at 612nm with a half bandwidth of 3nm, characteristic of Eu(III) ion, was observed with all devices. The device with a 3% dopant concentration shows the maximum luminance up to 1169cd/m2 (18V) and the device with a 5% dopant concentration exhibits a current efficiency of 4.46cd/A and power efficiency of 2.03lm/W. The mechanism of the electroluminescence was also discussed.

Abstract:Rare-earth ions Tb3+ and La3+ were used as a bridge to improve the energy transfer from the polymer to an Eu complex. The material Tb(La)0.5Eu0.5(BSA)3phen was synthesized and used as the emission layer in the device: ITO/PVK:Tb(La)0.5Eu0.5(BSA)3phen/Alq/Al. The two device were compared in detail and it was found that the device using La0.5Eu0.5(BSA)3phen as the emission material had better monochromatic characteristics with the maximal brightness of 102 cd/m2 and the colour coordinates x = 0.55 and y = 0.36.

Abstract:A novel poly-ligand europium β-diketone complex was prepared, which contains ligand of 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4(4-butylbenzoyl)-5-pyrazolone (HPMBBP). Its structure is Eu(TTA)2(PMBBP)Phen. We investigated its PL and EL properties. When it was used as emitting material, the new Eu-complex exhibited intense photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) at 613 nm in a fabricated three-layer electroluminescent device: ITO/TPD/Eu(TTA)2(PMBBP)Phen/Alq3/Mg:Ag. The maximum luminance of 16 cd/m2 from the device was obtained at 12.5 V.
