Abstract:Catalytic ozonation is a non-selective mineralization technology of organic matter in water by using active free radicals generated by ozone degradation. Catalytic ozonation technology can be divided into homogeneous catalytic reactions using metal ions as catalysts and heterogeneous catalytic reactions using solid catalysts. Homogeneous catalytic ozonation technology has many problems, such as low mineralization rate, secondary pollution caused by the introduction of metal ions and low utilization efficiency of oxidants, which limit its practical application. Compared with homogeneous catalytic ozonation technology, heterogeneous catalytic ozonation technology has the advantages of easy recovery, lower cost of water treatment, higher activity and improved mineralization rate of organic matter. This overview classifies and describes catalysts for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation technology, including the different types of metal oxides, metal-free catalysts, and substrates used to immobilize catalysts. In addition, the heterogeneous catalytic ozonation process involved in the multiphase complex reaction process is discussed. The effects of different parameters on the performance of heterogeneous catalytic ozonation are also discussed.

Abstract:The principles, characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of the various most practical advanced oxidation technologies recently, for example, Fenton oxidation, catalytic ozone oxidation, photocatalytic oxidation, electrolytic catalytic oxidation, wet air oxidation and catalytic wet air oxidation, supercritical water oxidation, and supersonic oxidation, were reviewed and the problems existing in various advanced oxidation technologies and the development tendency in the further were analyzed. It is considered that the metal-catalyzed ozone oxidation is an economic and highly efficient oxidation technology combining the advantages of both ozone’s strong oxidation ability and metal catalyzer’ easy manufacturing, high durability, no need of adding other reagents, and low operation cost, showing a good development prospect in the future.

Abstract:Catalytic wet oxidation (CWO) is regarded as the second generation wastewater treatment technology and is specialized in the degradation or mineralization of the highly concentrated, toxic, refractory, and non-biodegradable industrial wastewater. Since the first industrial installation of CWO in the 1950s, many commercial CWO processes have been developed and applied for different wastewater sources and applications. This Chapter addresses the homogeneous CWO processes (Loprox, Ciba-Geigy, IT EnviroScience, ATHOS and ORCAN) and heterogeneous CWO processes (Osaka Gas, Nippon Shokubai, Kurita, CALIPHOX, DICP and Watercatox), and also the development on the homogeneous catalysts (cations and anions) and heterogeneous catalysts (supported noble metal catalysts and non-noble metal oxides). The application perspective of the CWO, such as for the treatment of the wastewater from the biomass pyrolysis for bio-based fuels and chemicals process, is also discussed.

Abstract:Wet air oxidation (WAO) is an attractive technique for sewage sludge treatment. The WAO process and the factors influencing the process are examined in detail, together with the advantages and disadvantages. Catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) is emphasized because it can lower operational conditions, and the commonly-used and new homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts are introduced. Homogeneous catalysts tend to be more appropriate for the CWAO treatment of sewage sludge, and Cu-based homogeneous catalysts such as CuSO4 are the most popular for industrial applications. Heterogeneous catalysts include non-noble metal catalysts, noble metal catalysts, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) catalysts, and non-metal catalysts. Non-noble metal catalysts typically contain hetero-elements as in Mo-based, Ce-based, Cu-based, Fe-based catalysts, multi-metal supported catalysts, and polyoxometalates catalysts. In general, Mo-based catalysts and Ce-based catalysts have higher activities than other metal-based catalysts. The commonly-used noble metal elements are based on Ru, Pt, Pd, Rh, and Ir. The MOF catalysts tend to have high catalytic activity, and the non-metallic carbon catalysts may be used in environments that would otherwise be toxic to traditional metal catalysts. To conclude, a summary of the challenges and prospects of WAO technology in sewage sludge treatment is given.
Excellent performance of electro-assisted catalytic wet air oxidation of refractory organic pollutants

Abstract:Catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) is a clean process for the treatment of toxic and/or biorefractory contaminants while it is a challenge to perform the CWAO at room temperature. Herein, we report an electro-assisted CWAO (ECWAO) process using partially oxidized nickel (Ni@NiO) immobilized on a porous graphite felt (GF) as a catalytic anode. Such a process demonstrates extensive effectiveness and good stability in the deep oxidation of various organic pollutants including triclosan (TCS), bisphenol A, ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, congo red, crystal violent and rodamine B at room temperature. The typical pollutant TCS is rapidly degraded within 105 min with a mineralization efficiency of 86.0 ± 1.4%, at specific energy consumption of 5.3 ± 0.3 kW h kg-TOC-1. NiO is identified as the catalytically active site at which O2 is dissociated and electro-activated to oxidize the TCS at room temperature. The ECWAO process on the anodic Ni@NiO/GF presents a great potential as an environmental-friendly and energy-saving process for treating high concentrations of refractory organic pollutants under ambient condition.

Abstract:The removal efficiency of organics by catalytic ozonation technology for advanced treatment of micropolluted water was investigated by means of productive comparison test.The results show that compared with single ozonation,the catalytic ozonation obviously enhances the removal of TOC and micropollutants,decreases the average residual ozone concentration by 0.2 mg/L,which reduces the potential of bromate formation.This technology can effectively reduce the pollutant load for subsequent treatment processes,and improves the adsorption of organics on activated carbon by 100%.After combining the catalytic ozonation process with the biological activated carbon treatment,the organic removal efficiency is increased by 14% to 24%.Therefore,the catalytic ozonation and its combined processes can be beneficial for either improving organic pollutants removal or controlling the formation of oxidation by-products.

Abstract:Ozonation process has been widely applied in water and wastewater treatment, such as for disinfection, for degradation of toxic organic pollutants. However, the utilization efficiency of ozone is low and the mineralization of organic pollutants by ozone oxidation is ineffective, and some toxic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) may be formed during ozonation process. Catalytic ozonation process can overcome these problems to some extent, which has received increasing attention in recent years. During catalytic ozonation, catalysts can promote O3 decomposition and generate active free radicals, which can enhance the degradation and mineralization of organic pollutants. In this paper, the history of ozonation application in water treatment was briefly reviewed. The properties of the ozone molecule, the ozonation types and several ozone-based water treatment processes were briefly introduced. Various catalysts for catalytic ozonation, including homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, such as metal ions, metal oxidizes, carbon-based materials and their possible catalytic mechanisms were analyzed and summarized in detail. Furthermore, some inconsistent results of previous research on catalytic ozonation were analyzed and discussed. The application of catalytic oxidation for the degradation of toxic organic pollutants, including phenols, pesticides, dyes, pharmaceuticals and others, was summarized. Finally, several key aspects of catalytic ozonation, such as pH effect, the catalyst performance, the catalytic mechanism were proposed, to which more attention should be paid in future study.

Abstract:Catalytic ozonation including homogeneous and heterogeneous ozonation has been extensively used in water and wastewater treatment in recent years. The liquid homogeneous catalysts cause secondary pollution and have limited development prospects. The heterogeneous catalyst exists in solid form, which is easy to separate solid from liquid, convenient to operate, and has high catalytic ozone decomposition efficiency. It can effectively mineralize organic pollutants and has great development potential. The catalyst is the core part of the whole method. In this study, the mechanism of heterogeneous catalytic ozone oxidation is briefly introduced. Several common preparation methods of ozone catalysts are reviewed. Various catalytic ozonation catalysts such as metal oxides, metals/metal oxides on supports, and carbon-based materials are summarized in detail. The application of heterogeneous catalytic ozonation in the degradation of phenols, pesticides, dyes, drugs, and other toxic organic pollutants is reviewed. At present, the structure of the catalyst is unstable, the active components of the catalyst are easily lost, and the catalytic effect is lost. Therefore, the development of supported catalysts with good stability has become the main direction of current research. The preparation and application of heterogeneous catalytic oxidation are also reviewed, which will be beneficial to further research.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes(AOPs),as new technologies in water treatment fields,are very popular in recent years.Especially,AOPS have the advantage in the treatment of difficultly degraded organics.The research process and mechanism for water treatment by advanced oxidation processes,such as Fenton and technologies on Fenton,photochemical oxidation and photocatalysis oxidation,ozone oxidation,electrochemical oxidation,wet air oxidation and catalytic wet air oxidation,supercritical water oxidation and supercritical catalytic water oxidation,are summarized in this paper.How to produce more ·OH radicals is one of the most radical issues in AOPs.Comprehensive analysis manifests that researching the oxidants of higher cost-efficient as well as the catalysts of more catalytic activity and sustainable are the main development trend in AOPs.In addition,it is necessary that technologies which combine AOPs and sound,light,electricity,magnet and so on will further not only enhance wastewater removal but also expand its space for research in wastewater fields.

Abstract:<p>Catalytic membranes can simultaneously realize physical separation and chemical oxidation in one integrated system, which is the frontier technology for effective removal of organic containments in wastewater treatment. The catalytic membrane coupled with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) not only significantly enhances the pollutant removal efficiency but also inhibits the fouling of the membrane via self-cleaning. In this review, the preparation approaches of catalytic membranes including blending, surface coating, and bottom-up synthesis are comprehensively summarized. The different integrated catalytic membrane systems coupled with photocatalysis, Fenton oxidation, persulfate activations, ozonation and electrocatalytic oxidation are discussed in terms of mechanisms and performance. Besides, the principles, influencing factors, advantages and issues of the different catalytic membrane/oxidation systems are outlined comparatively. Finally, the future challenges, and research directions are suggested, which is conducive to the design and development of catalytic membrane-oxidation systems for practical remediation of organic containing wastewater.</p>

Abstract:Nowadays, water pollution is one of the most dangerous environmental problems in the world. The presence of the so-called emerging pollutants in the different water bodies, impossible to eliminate through conventional biological and physical treatments used in wastewater treatment plants due to their persistent and recalcitrant nature, means that pollution continues growing throughout the world. The presence of these emerging pollutants involves serious risks to human and animal health for aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Therefore, in recent years, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been postulated as a viable, innovative and efficient technology for the elimination of these types of compounds from water bodies. The oxidation/reduction reactions triggered in most of these processes require a suitable catalyst. The most recent research focuses on the use and development of different types of heterogeneous catalysts, which are capable of overcoming some of the operational limitations of homogeneous processes such as the generation of metallic sludge, difficult separation of treated water and narrow working pH. This review details the current advances in the field of heterogeneous AOPs, Fenton processes and photocatalysts for the removal of different types of emerging pollutants.

Abstract:The principles, characteristics, and application effectiveness of several unitized and industrialized advanced oxidation equipments, including advanced nanometal-catalyzed ozone oxidation machine, multidimensional electrolytic catalytic oxidation equipment, and ultraviolet-light catalyzed oxidation equipment, were introduced. The reason why domestic ultraviolet light-catalyzed oxidation technology lags behind Germany was analyzed. It is proposed that the domestic scientists should strengthen cooperation in various areas and make efforts to create worldwide leading advanced oxidation equipment to completely solve the environmental pollution problem.

Abstract:Sewage sludge as waste of the wastewater treatment process contains toxic substances, and its conversion into sludge biochar-based catalysts is a promising strategy that merges the merits of waste reutilization and environmental cleanup. This study aims to systematically recapitulate the published articles on the development of sludge biochar-based catalysts in different advanced oxidation processes of wastewater, including sulfate-based system, Fenton-like systems, photocatalysis, and ozonation systems. Due to abundant functional groups, metal phases and unique structures, sludge biochar-based catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic behavior for decontamination in advanced oxidation systems. In particular, the combination of sludge and pollutant dopants manifests a synergistic effect. The catalytic mechanisms of as-prepared catalysts in these systems are also investigated. Furthermore, initial solution pH, catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, and coexisting anions have a vital role in advanced oxidation processes, and these parameters are systematically summarized. In summary, this study could provide relatively comprehensive and up-to-date messages for the application of sludge biochar-based catalysts in the advanced oxidation processes of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The alkaline residue is a highly toxic and hazardous alkaline wastewater from oil proceeding,which contains a great deal of pollutants,so it is a main pollution source with a bad odor of oil refinery.The process principle,process flow and treatment efficiency of pollutants for mild wet air oxidation to treat the alkaline residue are introduced.The problems of the process in industrial application are analyzed,and corresponding improvement methods are provided to ensure the unit to run stably.The results show that the process is an advanced and reliable technology with good removal for pollutants,and the treated wastewater would favor for continued treatment.
