Abstract:A novel particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with the evaluation of infeasibility degree (IFD) of constraints is presented for nonlinear programming (NLP) problems with equality and inequality constraints. The IFD of constraints is defined as the sum of the squared values of the constraint violations. The proposed novel PSO updates the local best position and global best position according to the objective value and the value of IFD simultaneously. A PSO-LP Cooperative Algorithm for Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming

Abstract:Mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems widely exist in various aspects of an oil refinery, from crude oil supply chain, crude oil scheduling, production process decision-making, to optimal design of heat exchanger network or hydrogen network. Due to the NP-hard nature, many MINLP problems are difficult to solve efficiently and reliably. In this paper, a cooperative algorithm based on an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) and linear programming algorithm (LP) is proposed to solve the complex MINLP problems. The PSO-LP cooperative algorithm includes an outer module running the improved PSO algorithm, and an inner module running LP algorithm, for example, the simplex algorithm. The outer module transforms the MINLP problem into a LP problem and passes it on to the inner module. The inner module feeds back the LP results to the outer module to update the MINLP problem. The above procedure iterates continuously to get the optimal solution of the MINLP problem. The proposed PSO-LP cooperative algorithm is verified using various MINLP problems. Results show that the proposed algorithm is computationally more accurate and more reliable than the existing ones.

Abstract:SQP algorithms are viewed as the best method for solving nonlinear problems,and when applied to solve large-scale problems,they can be classified as full-space methods and reduced space methods.Based on the two kinds of SQP algorithms,large-scale nonlinear optimization software named UniOptima is developed.In UniOptima there are two nonlinear solvers named RSQP and THSQP.RSQP is designed to solve large-scale problems with large number of equality constraints and relatively few degrees of freedom,and THSQP is designed to solve general nonlinear problems.The optimization software has many options for users to select,is developed under Matlab language and is compatible with the optimization tools in Matlab,which will largely increase the convenience for users.

Abstract:A traffic network of a city area is considered in this paper. This paper presents a linear program which is based on optimization from a purely mathematical point of view to solve the problem of optimizing city area traffic control. The phase sequence of each intersection is known. The identification of the optimal phase relationship between all intersections and duration for the signal phases are combined into one problem in this paper. In particular, we consider a group of signalized intersections in a city area which have common cycles. We analyse the network coordination problem and given splits for each phase, determine offsets for all signals.

Abstract:While there have been many improvements in the teaching of operations research/management science (OR/MS) in recent years, students continue to have great difficulty with the process of constructing a linear programming model. We propose addressing this issue with a translation approach that breaks the process down into a series of small, well-defined steps. The underlying idea is to develop a representation of the problem in terms of measurable quantities that can then be translated, via application of an explicit rule, into the proper algebraic form and/or equivalent spreadsheet formulas. As background, related research on word problem solving from cognitive psychology and mathematical education is reviewed in the paper. We illustrate the translation approach with several examples and explain how using it can improve students' modeling skills. Preliminary data on the effectiveness of the methodology for undergraduate business students in an introductory MS course is also presented.

Abstract:In an effort to boost efficiency and reduce costs, computer-based solutions have become more popular for project management. Although Primavera P6 and other traditional tools have proved essential for project planning and control, difficulties still arise with complicated projects. An innovative approach is provided by the development of mathematical optimization techniques, especially Linear Programming (LP) with programmes like Lingo Solver. The purpose of this study is to compare the time and cost optimization of Primavera P6 and Lingo Solver's LP. The goals are to analyse the advantages and disadvantages, evaluate the effectiveness and adaptability, and offer useful information to decision-makers. Application of Lingo Solver's LP is found to significantly reduce project duration, with a significant impact on cost trends. On the other hand, Primavera P6 shows that project duration can be reduced while maintaining the same level of cost. The study highlights how the duration of the project, additional indirect expenses, and costs interplay dynamically throughout the duration of the project. This research provides useful insights to the continuing discussion on project management methodologies by bridging the gap between conventional project management tools and advanced optimization techniques. This will help decision-makers overcome the complexities of project optimization for optimal results in practical applications. Abstract:This article focuses on an area of nonlinear programming problems known as linear fractional programming problems with multiple objectives. When tackling real-world linear fractional optimization problems, ambiguity and uncertainty in decision-making are inherent. This research aims to present a simple and computationally quick approach to solving multiple objective linear fractional programming problems with all decision variables and parameters described in terms of crisp. The proposed solution algorithm is based primarily on the fuzzy-based technique, and a membership function strategy. To resolve the multi-objective linear fractional programming problem, first consider the problem as a single objective function and along with the fuzzy programming model obtain the optimal solution using LINGO software. LINGO is a software application primarily used for solving linear, nonlinear, and integer optimization problems Moreover, an e-education setup problem demonstrates the steps of the proposed method.

Abstract:For FE-based structural optimization systems, a large variety of different numerical algorithms is available, e.g. sequential linear programming, sequential quadratic programming, convex approximation, generalized reduced gradient, multiplier, penalty or optimality criteria methods, and combinations of these approaches. The purpose of the paper is to present the numerical results of a comparative study of eleven mathematical programming codes which represent typical realizations of the mathematical methods mentioned. They are implemented in the structural optimization system MBB-LAGRANGE, which proceeds from a typical finite element analysis. The comparative results are obtained from a collection of 79 test problems. The majority of them are academic test cases, the others possess some practicalreal life background. Optimization is performed with respect to sizing of trusses and beams, wall thicknesses, etc., subject to stress, displacement, and many other constraints. Numerical comparison is based on reliability and efficiency measured by calculation time and number of analyses needed to reach a certain accuracy level.

Abstract:Time, raw materials and labour are some of the nite resources in the world. Due to this, Linear Programming* (LP) is adopted by key decision-markers as an innovative tool to wisely consume these resources. This paper test the strength of linear programming models and presents an optimal solution to a diet problem on a multi-shop system formulated as linear, integer linear and mixed-integer linear programming models. All three models gave different least optimal values, that is, in linear programming, the optimal cost was GHS15.26 with decision variables being continuous (R+) and discrete (Z+). The cost increased to GHS17.50 when the models were formulated as mixed-integer linear programming with decision variables also being continuous (R+) and discrete (Z+) and lastly GHS17.70 for integer linear programming with discrete (Z+) decision variables. The difference in optimal cost for the same problem under different search spaces sufficiently establish that, in programming, the search space undoubtedly affect the optimal value. Applications to most problems like the diet and scheduling problems periodically require both discrete and continuous decision variables. This makes integer and mixed-integer linear programming models also an effective way of solving most problems. Therefore, Linear Programming* is applicable to numerous problems due to its ability to provide different required solutions.

Abstract:This study applies analytic hierarchy process (AHP), 0-1 integer programming and other systematic programming models, combined with the needs of manufacturers to build a set of mathematical models to help manufacturers select suppliers, control raw material ordering costs, and transporting costs. As the production costs of products is linked to the ordering and transporting of raw materials, manufacturers need to choose suitable raw material suppliers and develop the most economical ordering and transporting schemes with the most negligible loss so as to improve profits and enhance the market competitiveness. Taking a building and decorative plate enterprise as a case, this model shows that AHP can effectively quantify the supplying characteristics of suppliers and obtain a list of high-quality suppliers. LINGO software combined with linear programming can be used to obtain the optimal weekly ordering and transporting schemes, thus reducing the raw material ordering costs and transporting losses. It is shown from the results that the production costs of enterprises from the source can be reduced so as to improve their cost control system. The present study seeks to fill the gap in ordering and transporting raw materials for manufacturers to control production costs. At the same time, this model provides references for producers who have the demand for processing raw materials and play a significant role in controlling production costs.
A Comparison of Two Mixed-Integer Linear Programs for Piecewise Linear Function Fitting

Abstract:The problem of fitting continuous piecewise linear (PWL) functions to discrete data has applications in pattern recognition and engineering, amongst many other fields. To find an optimal PWL function, the positioning of the breakpoints connecting adjacent linear segments must not be constrained and should be allowed to be placed freely. Although the univariate PWL fitting problem has often been approached from a global optimisation perspective, recently, two mixed-integer linear programming approaches have been presented that solve for optimal PWL functions. In this paper, we compare the two approaches: the first was presented by Rebennack and Krasko [Rebennack S, Krasko V (2020) Piecewise linear function fitting via mixed-integer linear programming. INFORMS J. Comput. 32(2):507–530] and the second by Kong and Maravelias [Kong L, Maravelias CT (2020) On the derivation of continuous piecewise linear approximating functions. INFORMS J. Comput. 32(3):531–546]. Both formulations are similar in that they use binary variables and logical implications modelled by big-[Formula: see text] constructs to ensure the continuity of the PWL function, yet the former model uses fewer binary variables. We present experimental results comparing the time taken to find optimal PWL functions with differing numbers of breakpoints across 10 data sets for three different objective functions. Although neither of the two formulations is superior on all data sets, the presented computational results suggest that the formulation presented by Rebennack and Krasko is faster. This might be explained by the fact that it contains fewer complicating binary variables and sparser constraints. Summary of Contribution: This paper presents a comparison of the mixed-integer linear programming models presented in two recent studies published in the INFORMS Journal on Computing. Because of the similarity of the formulations of the two models, it is not clear which one is preferable. We present a detailed comparison of the two formulations, including a series of comparative experimental results across 10 data sets that appeared across both papers. We hope that our results will allow readers to take an objective view as to which implementation they should use.

Finding All Solutions of Piecewise-Linear Equations Using Linear Programming

Abstract:A linear programming (LP) algorithm was developed to more efficiently find all solutions of piecewise-linear equations than the traditional LP algorithm. This algorithm first finds the hypercube consisting of the various linear regions with the equations being other convex or concave in this hypercube. Then, specific LP problems are solved in the hypercube to determine whether the solution exists. For the example given in this paper, the algorithm uses only 25% as many linear programs as the conventional LP algorithm. Thus this algorithm is more efficient than the conventional LP algorithm since it reduces the number of linear programs that need to be solved. The improved performance compared to the conventional LP algorithm depends on the equation properties.
Multi-objective Programming Urban Green Space in Urban and Suburb Area of Beijing

Abstract:Urban and suburb area of Beijing is a region with high population density and intense economic activities.As one of the most important environmental resources for air quality improvement,urban green space supplies many indis- pensable ecosystem services.The main environmental problems of the study area are dustiness,high SO_2 concentration, and large O_2 consumption.In order to meet city residents'requirements for environmental quality,a MLP(multi-objec- tive linear programming)model with a series of decision variables and constraint conditions is built to plan the urban green space in study area.Software Lingo 8.0 is used in the MLP model solving.According to modeling results,the plan- ning areas of different kinds of urban green space in 2020 will be distributed more reasonably than current situation (2000),and the combination of arbor,shrub and lawn will enhance total ecosystem services.The research results can be used in ecological city construction of Beijing.

Abstract:A hybrid genetic algorithm is proposed for global optimization of nonlinear programming problems with inequality constraints.The proposed algorithm consists of global exploration and local exploitation.In the global exploration phase,the simplex search is performed in those potential niches to quickly find the promising search domains.In the local exploitation,another simplex search is performed to quickly locate the global optimum in the located promising domain.The proposed method effectively alleviates premature convergence and improves weak exploitation capacity of genetic algorithms.Typical numerical examples are employed to demonstrate the efficiency,reliability and high accuracy of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:We consider a linear sum-of-ratios fractional programming problem that arises from a broad range of applications and is known to be NP-hard. In this paper, we first develop a successive linear optimization (SLO) method for the linear sum-of-ratios problem and show that it converges to a KKT point of the underlying problem. Second, we propose a new branch-and-cut algorithm for globally solving the linear sum-of-ratios fractional program by integrating the SLO method, the linear optimization (LO) relaxation, branch-and-bound framework and branch-and-cut rule. We establish the global convergence of the algorithm and estimate its complexity. Numerical results are reported to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in finding a global optimal solution to large-scale instances of linear sum-of-ratios problem.

Abstract:It has been verified that the linear programming (LP) is able to formulate many real-life optimization problems, which can obtain the optimum by resorting to corresponding solvers such as OptVerse, Gurobi and CPLEX. In the past decades, a serial of traditional operation research algorithms have been proposed to obtain the optimum of a given LP in a fewer solving time. Recently, there is a trend of using machine learning (ML) techniques to improve the performance of above solvers. However, almost no previous work takes advantage of ML techniques to improve the performance of solver from the front end, i.e., the modeling (or formulation). In this paper, we are the first to propose a reinforcement learning-based reformulation method for LP to improve the performance of solving process. Using an open-source solver COIN-OR LP (CLP) as an environment, we implement the proposed method over two public research LP datasets and one large-scale LP dataset collected from practical production planning scenario. The evaluation results suggest that the proposed method can effectively reduce both the solving iteration number ($25\%\downarrow$) and the solving time ($15\%\downarrow$) over above datasets in average, compared to directly solving the original LP instances.

Abstract:<p>There are various optimization problems that involve different constraints. In this study, we propose an optimization method, called the error feedback method (EFM), for linear constraint problems. This method is used to calculate the errors that violate the constraints and then allocates the errors in proportion to each parameter, such that the new offspring satisfies the constraints. EFM has the advantages of saving computing resources and converging faster than the penalty function method. To verify the performance of the EFM, we use a typical benchmark function and three engineering models as examples. The models include a complex linear inequality constraint, a Markov prediction model with linear equality constraints, and two mathematical planar four-bar linkage models with inequality constraints. To optimize each model, we select three popular algorithms, namely, particle swarm optimization, teaching-learning-based optimization, and differential evolution algorithm. We compare the EFM with the penalty function method and other methods for handling linear constraint problems. The experimental results show that the EFM has significantly better stability and faster convergence than the compared methods.</p>

Abstract:Introduction In recent years considerable progress has been made in the development and application of mathematical techniques for the solution of certain problems involving economic "strategies". Such a problem might involve, for example, the scheduling of shipments of a commodity from a number of sources to a number of destinations. The object would be to schedule the shipments in a manner so as to satisfy the destination requirements and at the same time minimize the transportation costs. The solution to such a problem is not necessarily intuitively obvious. The "obvious" solution is frequently far from optimum. If the shipments are to be made from, for example, only two sources to four destinations, the optimum schedule is readily found. However, if shipments are to be made from, say, 10 sources to several hundred destinations, even a competent and experienced scheduler may spend considerable time in finding a reasonable answer. Even then he is not sure that he has the optimum solution. Furthermore, he has no way of knowing how far from optimum the answer is. Consequently, he does not know whether he should accept this solution or seek a better one. Prior to the advent of large high-speed digital computers, little more could be done with such problems because of their great size and multiplicity of possible solutions. A problem involving 20 sources and 50 destinations would require choosing, from a very large number of possible combinations, the optimum combination of 1,000 variables. The best one could do was to utilize intuition, extrapolation from past experience, and other non-exact approaches. With a high-speed computer, however, such problems can be solved providing a reasonable computational procedure (or algorithm) can be utilized. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a procedure (linear programming) and to apply this procedure to a production scheduling problem.
