Abstract:Plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has been widely used in the world. Petroleum-based plasticizers especially phthalates have been the most common plasticizers used in PVC. However, the global petroleum resources are becoming scarce gradually, and the hygienic requirements for plasticizers are increasing. Owing to the negative impact of petroleum-based plasticizers on human health and the environment, their use has been restricted in the USA, the European and so on. Biomass renewable resources have wide range of sources and low prices, and the chemicals obtained from them have various structures, which can provide a huge platform to design novel PVC plasticizers with the aim of replacing traditional phthalate plasticizers. Many bio-based PVC plasticizers, such as vegetable oil-based plasticizers, cardanol-based plasticizers, lactic acid-based plasticizers, waste cooking oil-based plasticizers, polyester plasticizers, hyperbranched plasticizers and so on, have been extensively studied. We have reviewed recent research progress on different types of novel bio-based PVC plasticizers and assorted them by raw materials and chemical structure. Through in-depth analysis of the relationship between the chemical structure and the plasticizing performance, the efficiency of plasticizers may be predicted before they have been designed. This review will be beneficial for the development of bio-based plasticizers by pointing out the research and application direction.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The use of plasticizers is crucial in enhancing the flexibility of engineering plastics. Currently, the primary plasticizers employed in poly(vinyl chloride) materials are nonrenewable phthalates. These exhibit a detrimental impact on the environment and human health owing to their toxic benzene ring structure. Consequently, the development of easily synthesizable, green plasticizers with excellent properties using biobased resources has been a long-standing objective in the field of resin plasticizing. Herein, we synthesized a branched lactic acid ester (BLAE) plasticizer using esterification and acid anhydride end-capping methods. Further, we investigated its application performance and oral toxicity. The abundance of polar ester groups in the oligolactic acid structure enables them to form secondary bonds with polymer chains. This results in a glass transition temperature is 59% less than that of pure poly(vinyl chloride), thereby improving the mechanical properties of the material. The addition of the BLAE plasticizer not only improved the thermal stability of the compound film but also effectively reduced the self-catalytic dehydrochlorination reaction of poly(vinyl chloride). This overcomes the limitations of unmodified poly(vinyl chloride), such as performance deterioration and color variation due to light exposure. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity of the compound film was substantially enhanced, resulting in outstanding antifouling and self-cleaning properties. These findings suggest that lactic acid-based plasticizer exhibits comparable or even superior overall performance when compared to commercially available plasticizers such as dioctyl phthalate and acetyl tributyl citrate. This work not only addresses the gap in the toxicity assessment of lactic acid plasticizers but also demonstrates their nontoxic characteristics in acute oral toxicity tests. This research offers novel insights into the green synthesis and functional development of biobased plasticizers, showcasing considerable potential for the substituting of dioctyl phthalate.

Abstract:Biomass Plasticizers for PVC: Synthesis & Performance. Using the abundant and cost‐effective oleic acid and isosorbide with excellent properties as raw materials, the plasticizers of isosorbide di‐oleate (IDO) and isosorbide di‐epoxidized oleate (IDEO) with good plasticizing effect, low cost and green safety were synthesized by esterification and epoxidation reaction. The molecular structure of the synthesized plasticizers was characterized by FT‐IR and 1H NMR. The PVC shows better flexibility when IDEO or IDO plasticizer is used than commercial DOP. In particular, IDEO‐40 has 34% higher tensile strength and 17% higher elongation at break than DOP‐40. The introduction of epoxy groups on the carbon–carbon double bond of fatty acids meets the high thermal stability of plasticized film. The residual amount of IDEO‐40 is 7.01%, and at a high temperature of 180 °C, it can maintain high heat resistance for more than 220 min and transmittance of over 86%. Moreover, IDEO demonstrates excellent resistance to migration and volatilization. However, PVC films plasticized with IDO display reduced mechanical properties, cold resistance, and resistance to volatilization and migration due to the presence of non‐rotating carbon–carbon double bonds. The results indicate that these bio‐based plasticizers hold promise for practical applications in PVC products, offering improved environmental sustainability and performance characteristics.

Synthesis of azelaic acid copolyester plasticizers and their application in PVC

Abstract:A series of 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (MPO) modified azelaic acid and hexylene glycol copolyester (PHMAZ) plasticizers with varying contents were synthesized using a direct esterification melt polycondensation method, and their structures were characterized systematically. Analysis using infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed the synthesis of the designed copolyester structure. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) tests indicated that the number average molecular weight of each copolyester sample ranged between 2000 and 3000. These copolyesters were used to plasticize polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin, and the glass transition temperature of the plasticized PVC samples was tested using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Further characterization of the plasticizing effects was conducted using an electronic universal testing machine. The research results showed that as the content of MPO increased, the plasticizing effect of the copolyester initially increased and then decreased. Specifically, the copolyester containing 45% MPO, PHMAZ-45, demonstrated the best plasticizing effect on PVC, with the glass transition temperature of the plasticized PVC system around -35 °C, elongation at break at 908.4%, and a plasticizing efficiency of 254.5%. Additionally, this new type of copolyester plasticizer uses bio-based raw materials, exhibits excellent plasticizing effects, and the preparation process is stable and controllable. It holds promising potential to replace traditional volatile and toxic phthalate esters, presenting significant industrial application value.
Structural Modification of Waste Cooking Oil Methyl Esters As Cleaner Plasticizer to Substitute Toxic Dioctyl Phthalate

Abstract:Most of the plasticizers used during poly (vinyl chloride) processing are typically toxic petroleum-based phthalates. Furthermore, large amount of edible oils become waste all over the world, fortunately, waste cooking oils have the potential to be an economic alternative for synthesizing different biomaterials. This study aimed to synthesis an improved properties and cost competitiveness cleaner bio-plasticizer using waste cooking oil methyl esters as staring raw materials. In this paper, waste cooking oil methyl esters were structurally modified i.e., transesterification and epoxidation reaction, to prepare epoxide waste cooking oil 2-ethylhexyl esters. The in-situ epoxidation was mainly studied by response surface methodology, with optimum conditions: reaction time was 7 h, molar ratio of C=C bonds/FA/H2O2 was 1.00/0.35/2.41, and reaction temperature was 65.84 degrees C with a maximum relative percentage conversion to oxirane of 92%. Also, the plasticizing effectiveness of epoxide waste cooking oil 2-ethylhexyl esters to substitute toxic plasticizer dioctyl phthalate were studied. Results showed that the mechanical and thermal performance of PVC samples was significantly improved with partial substitutions, while the migration resistance was slightly decreased. Comparison with conventional epoxy compound highlighted that epoxide waste cooking oil 2-ethylhexyl esters had superior low temperature property, oxidation stability, and remarkably reduced the glass transition temperature of PVC. In conclusion, the prepared epoxide via structural modification from waste cooking oil methyl esters proved to be an effective alternative to dioctyl phthalate, replacing about 40% of the total plasticizer. This may lead to the eco-development of waste cooking oil materials, and makes the plasticizing process more environmentally friendly. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Sugar/sugar alcohol with glycerol as co-plasticizers for high-content starch/PBAT blown films: from fine structure to physicochemical properties

Abstract:Background: Glycerol is a well-known plasticizer for starch-based materials, but it easily migrates during starch retrogradation, thereby deteriorating the films' properties. We hypothesized that the performance of high-content starch/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) films could be enhanced by using sugar/sugar alcohol (glucose, sucrose and sorbitol) as natural, green and edible co-plasticizers with glycerol. Results: The employment of co-plasticizers reduced the melt fluidity of the blends, established intermolecular hydrogen bonds with starch and resulted in a brittle film structure. The presence of sucrose contributed to the formation of more B-type starch crystals. Glucose and sucrose promoted the conversion of bound water to entrapped water, while sorbitol contributed to more bound water. The co-plasticizers enhanced films' thermal stability, moisture permeability (from 3.61 to 3.72 × 10-11 g m m-2 s-1 Pa-1), and oxygen barrier (from 12.84 to 8.74 × 10-13 cm3 cm cm-2 s-1 Pa-1). Glucose/glycerol co-plasticized film had the maximum tensile strength (10.12 MPa), and sucrose/glycerol co-plasticized film showed the highest Young's modulus (380.31 MPa). Conclusion: Sorbitol with linear structure and the lowest melting point exhibited a plasticizing capacity similar to glycerol. The molecular structure (linear or cyclic), hydroxyl group proportion and melting point of the sugar/sugar alcohol were the key factors to regulate the fine structure and properties of starch/PBAT films. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:Introducing renewable resources into the production of biological agents and conducting comprehensive performance evaluations of the products is an inevitable trend in promoting sustainable development. Lactic acid is a sustainable and eco-friendly material that is derived from the fermentation of crops such as corn, sweet potatoes, and potatoes. This study synthesized a novel crab-like lactic acid-based plasticizer IPBL by reacting lactic acid with butanol and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). The molecular structure of compound was characterized by FTIR, 1 H NMR, and mass spectrum. The IPBL plasticizer was used to blend poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), and its performance was compared to commercial plasticizers, dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC). The results demonstrated that the PVC film plasticized by IPBL had comparable optical properties, thermal stability, and migration resistance to PVC/DOP and PVC/ATBC. In addition, PVC/IPBL blends exhibit certain hydrophobicity, which has also been shown in stain resistance tests to have potential for anti-fouling and self-cleaning applications. The DMA test showed that IPBL had a lower glass transition temperature (T g ) than commercial plasticizers, resulting in higher elongation at break. Preliminary commercial cost calculations showed that it is superior to the bio-based plasticizer ATBC. The interaction behavior between IPBL and PVC chains was verified by molecular dynamics simulations. These findings demonstrate that the lactic acid-based plasticizer IPBL has excellent capacity as a bio-based alternative to harmful petroleum-based phthalate plasticizers.

Abstract:The increasing global demand for sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based plasticizers, particularly in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) products, has intensified the exploration of bio-based options derived from renewable resources such as plant oils. Traditional bio-based plasticizers, while promising, often suffer from limitations such as low molecular weight, high volatility, and poor compatibility with PVC, thereby restricting their practical applications. To surmount this hurdle, we introduce a novel synthetic route combining the Passerini reaction with the thiol-ene click reaction, aimed at producing high-performance plant oil-based plasticizers (POPs) with enhanced ester content and molecular weight. This method offers significant advantages over traditional methods, including low reaction temperatures (≤40 °C), ultrahigh yield (95 %) when using ethanol as the solvent, and precise control over ester content. Furthermore, the key findings demonstrate that the designed and synthesized POP (bio-content, 69 %) produced using this method exhibits outstanding overall performance, such as excellent migration resistance, good compatibility with PVC, and high thermal stability compared to traditional plasticizers. This facile, green, and efficient method may significantly advance the adoption of bio-based plasticizers, establishing them as a viable alternative to petroleum-based counterparts.
Synthesis of Green Plasticizers from Swill-Cooked Dirty Oil Catalyzed by Ion Exchange Resin

Abstract:Green plasticizers were synthesized by epoxidation of swill-cooked dirty oil using the ion exchange resin Amberlite IR-120 as catalyst.On the basis of dehydration,purification,alkali refining,physicochemical property and fatty acid composition analysis of swill-cooked dirty oil,the influences of the dosages of catalyst,30％ H2 O2and acetic acid,reaction temperature and reaction time on the epoxidation reaction of swill-cooked dirty oil were discussed.The results demonstrated that the swill-cooked dirty oil had high degree of unsaturation,composed of palmitic acid (19.86％),oleic acid (34.98％) and linoleic acid(33.31％),and the theoretical epoxy value was 5.3 mol/100 g.In addition,the optimal conditions of epoxidation reaction were obtained as follows:mass ratio of swill-cooked dirty oil to 30％ H2O2 1∶2.5,mass ratio of swill-cooked dirty oil to acetic acid 1∶0.9,dosage of catalyst 3％,reaction temperature 65 ℃ and reaction time 3 h.Under the optimal conditions,the epoxy value of epoxidized swill-cooked dirty oil plasticizer was 4.61 mol/100 g and the relative epoxy conversion rate was up to 87％.

Abstract:<p>This paper reported the preparation of a renewable plasticizer originated from waste cooking oil (WCO). The plasticizing effect of the developed material on the properties of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was studied. The results showed that epoxy groups were covalently bonded on the fatty acid derivated from WCO through the addition and epoxidization reactions. Compared with commercial dioctyl phthalate plasticizer, the plasticizer developed in this study improved the thermal stability and flexibility of PVC along with a lower glass transition temperature. The plasticizer showed marginal volatility and excellent resistance for migration in PVC matrix. The mechanism behind such observation was discussed. The novelty of this study lies in the introduction of epoxy groups to the ester and carbon-carbon double bonds in the fatty acid, which endowed the synthesized plasticizer a higher epoxy value. The perspective of using the developed material as an environment-friendly plasticizer for PVC was outlooked.</p>

Abstract:The problems with plastic materials and the good film‐forming properties of polysaccharides motivated research in the development of polysaccharide‐based films. In the last 5 years, there has been an explosion of publications on using green solvents, including ionic liquids (ILs), and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as candidates to substitute the conventional solvents/plasticizers for preparations of desired polysaccharide‐based films. This review summarizes related properties and recovery of ILs and DESs, a series of green preparation strategies (including pretreatment solvents/reaction media, ILs/DESs as components, extraction solvents of bioactive compounds added into films), and inherent properties of polysaccharide‐based films with/without ILs and DESs. Major reported advantages of these new solvents are high dissolving capacity of certain ILs/DESs for polysaccharides (i.e., up to 30 wt% for cellulose) and better plasticizing ability than traditional plasticizers. In addition, they frequently display intrinsic antioxidant and antibacterial activities that facilitate ILs/DESs applications in the processing of polysaccharide‐based films (especially active food packaging films). ILs/DESs in the film could also be further recycled by water or ethanol/methanol treatment followed by drying/evaporation. One particularly promising approach is to use bioactive cholinium‐based ILs and DESs with good safety and plasticizing ability to improve the functional properties of prepared films. Whole extracts by ILs/DESs from various byproducts can also be directly used in films without separation/polishing of compounds from the extracting agents. Scaling‐up, including costs and environmental footprint, as well as the safety and applications in real foods of polysaccharide‐based film with ILs/DESs (extracts) deserves more studies.
Green Plasticizer for Poly(vinyl chloride) Re-Granulate Production: Case Study of Sustainability Concept Implementation

Abstract:The increase in waste polymer recycling has helped in promoting sustainability, and together with the use of renewable raw materials, it has become a widespread concept with positive effects on both the economy and ecology. Accordingly, the aim of this study was the synthesis of "green" plasticizers, marked as LA/PG/PET/EG/LA, formed from waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and bio-based platform chemicals propylene glycol (PG) and levulinic acid (LA). The structure of the obtained plasticizers was complex, as confirmed by results from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The LA/PG/PET/EG/LA plasticizers and waste poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) were used in an optimized technology for PVC re-granulate production. The hardness of the PVC-based material with "green" plasticizers, in comparison to commercial plasticizer dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP), increased by 11.3%, while migration decreased. An improved material homogeneity and wettability of the fibers by the matrix were observed using SEM analysis of the material's fracture surface, with a higher efficiency of intermolecular interactions leading to better mechanical performances of the newly designed materials. Thus, LA/PG/PET/EG/LA are unique materials with good compounding and plasticizing potential for PVC, as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). In that manner, the use of bio-renewable resources and recycled polymers will contribute to diminishing waste polymer generation, contributing to a lower carbon footprint.

Abstract:In recent years, with the increasingly serious environmental pollution, the achievement of a truly circular materials economy approach to sustainability has attracted the attention of scientists. In this paper, we proposed an approach that combined the chemical recycling of poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) plastic with the synthesis of a green plasticizer to promote the development of plastics' reutilization. An efficient alcoholysis strategy was employed to achieve the precise chain scission of PCL into short-chain PCL (sc-PCL), which was subsequently blended with polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The excellent compatibility of PVC/sc-PCL blend was characterized through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and solubility parameters. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) confirmed that the thermostability and plasticity of the plasticized PVC samples were superior to those of most commercial plasticizers' plasticized samples. Meanwhile, the exceptional extraction and migration resistance of PVC/sc-PCL implied that sc-PCL was capable to modify PVC as an ideal plasticizer. The flexible macromolecular structure of sc-PCL and the high percentage of polar ester groups made sc-PCL closely entangled with PVC, thus exhibiting excellent plasticizing properties. This trash into treasure strategy was also applicable to commercial PCL products, which will open up a new direction for chemical recycling of plastics as well as design and synthesis of green plasticizers.

Abstract:The current research efforts in the plasticizer industry should focus on finding renewable biomass chemical feedstocks to synthesize non-toxic and effective bio-based plasticizers in order to adapt to the concept of green environmental protection given the scarcity of petroleum resources and the growing emphasis on health and environmental protection. In this study, lactic acid, DL-malic acid, and levulinic acid were used as the main raw materials in a three-step esterification reaction to successfully synthesize a novel high-efficiency plasticizer (LLMEE) containing multiple ester groups. The structure of LLMEE was characterized and confirmed by FT-IR, 1 H NMR, and time of flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS). The plasticizing properties of LLMEE in PVC were tested and compared to the commercial plasticizers acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC) and dioctyl phthalate (DOP). The results of optical performance showed that, compared to ATBC and DOP, PVC plasticized by 50 phr LLMEE had both high transparency and UV resistance. According to the results of tensile tests, the elongation at break of PVC plasticized by 60 phr LLMEE reached 833.1%, indicating its excellent mechanical properties. The TGA results showed that the thermal stability of PVC plasticized by LLMEE was as comparable to that of PVC plasticized by DOP or ATBC. Most importantly, LLMEE exhibited excellent migration stability in various leaching tests compared to commercial plasticizers. Taken together, the results indicated that compared with ATBC and DOP, LLMEE had better comprehensive performance, which provides a new choice to rationally utilize biomass raw materials to prepare novel environmentally friendly plasticizers.

Abstract:Dioctyl phthalate (DEHP), as the most used commercial plasticizer, has been restricted in many polymer products due to its reproductive toxicity to human body. In this study, castor oil based polyol ester(CPE) was synthesized via a simple and efficient way and used as a sustainable plasticizer in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) films to replace toxic DEHP. The chemical structure of the obtained bio-based plasticizer was characterized. The oral toxicity test indicated that CPE had toxic doses of over 3000 mg/kg. Tg of PVC films decreased from 87.4 to 19.1 °C, which is lower than PVC-DEHP systems. The tensile strength and elongation at break of PVC films plasticized with 50 phr CPE is 12.10 MPa and 450.15% respectively, which shows more flexible than PVC/50 prh DEHP samples.The DMA and tensile tests results indicated that the plasctizing effect of CPE was more excellent than DEHP. DEHP can be completely replaced with CPE in flexible PVC products.

Abstract:Increasing evidence has shown that plasticizer pollution and waste fatty acid contamination are serious environmental issues in our daily lives. Herein, an environmental friendly plasticizer (waste momomer fatty acid-based methyl tetraglycol ester, WMA-MTE) was designed and prepared via the direct esterification of waste momomer fatty acid derived from dimer acid manufacturing and methyl tetraglycol. The resulting WMA-MTE was used as a potential alternative for toxic petro-based dioctyl phthalate (DOP) in plasticizing poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The properties of plasticized PVC including low temperature capability, tensile properties, thermal stability, and migration resistance were dependent on the content of WMA-MTE. Among them, the overall performances of PVC plasticized with 100% WMA-MTE (PVC/WMA-MTE) were better than others, which could be attributed to the excellent abilities of oxethyl units in WMA-MTE in both improving the compatibility and flexibility. Importantly, WMA-MTE could be biodegraded only by being buried in soil. Abstract:With environmental and resource issues become increasingly prominent, as well as the requirements of the bioeconomy, the synthesis of polyurethane tends to follow the green chemistry and uses sustainable biological resources as raw materials. As a kind of biomass material, sorbitol has great potential for the bio-based polyurethane industry because of the high performance that sorbitol brings to polyurethane. What,s more, the various extraction technologies for sorbitol have matured. This paper reviews the extraction methods of sorbitol and analyzes the effects of sorbitol as polyols, crosslinkers and chain extenders used in polyurethane. Sorbitol based non-isocyanate polyurethane was also introduced.

Abstract:This study verified the environmental effectiveness of potentially less aggressive routes for the synthesis of poly(propylene/ethylene oxide) glycol (PPG). The analysis was developed in two stages. Firstly, the environmental performance of the conventional PPG processing route was compared to alternative variants—vegetal PPG and CO2-based PPG—applying the life cycle assessment technique to measure the primary energy demand, global warming potential, acidification, photochemical oxidation, and freshwater ecotoxicity impact categories. The synthesis of vegetable polyols from bio-based assets, such as vegetable oils, and the application of CO2 conversion routes as an alternative to technologies supported by petroleum and natural gas were studied. The use of CO2 recovered through carbon capture and usage practices resulted in environmental gains for PPG production. The processing routes within vegetal assets were not an environmentally attractive option as the performance was worse than the conventional arrangement by 144% for the global warming impact category, an increase related to the deforestation carried out to expand soybean cultivation in Brazil. Secondly, improvement scenarios to mitigate the environmental impacts of alternative routes were performed. The hypothesis of using cleaner inputs to obtain a more ecofriendly route was tested. The analysis concluded that the use of high-purity CO2 brings fewer benefits compared to other capturing sources that need a purification process before feeding the PPG synthesis.

Abstract:Plasticizers are additives that are used to impart flexibility to polymer blends and improve their processability. Plasticizers are typically not covalently bound to the polymers, allowing them to leach out over time, which results in human exposure and environmental contamination. Phthalates, in particular, have been the subject of increasing concern due to their established ubiquity in the environment and their suspected negative health effects, including endocrine disrupting and anti-androgenic effects. As there is mounting pressure to find safe replacement compounds, this review addresses the design and experimental elements that should be considered in order for a new or existing plasticizer to be considered green. Specifically, a multi-disciplinary and holistic approach should be taken which includes toxicity testing (both in vitro and in vivo), biodegradation testing (with attention to metabolites), as well as leaching studies. Special consideration should also be given to the design stages of producing a new molecule and the synthetic and scale-up processes should also be optimized. Only by taking a multi-faceted approach can a plasticizer be considered truly green.
