Abstract:The use of plasticizers is crucial in enhancing the flexibility of engineering plastics. Currently, the primary plasticizers employed in poly(vinyl chloride) materials are nonrenewable phthalates. These exhibit a detrimental impact on the environment and human health owing to their toxic benzene ring structure. Consequently, the development of easily synthesizable, green plasticizers with excellent properties using biobased resources has been a long-standing objective in the field of resin plasticizing. Herein, we synthesized a branched lactic acid ester (BLAE) plasticizer using esterification and acid anhydride end-capping methods. Further, we investigated its application performance and oral toxicity. The abundance of polar ester groups in the oligolactic acid structure enables them to form secondary bonds with polymer chains. This results in a glass transition temperature is 59% less than that of pure poly(vinyl chloride), thereby improving the mechanical properties of the material. The addition of the BLAE plasticizer not only improved the thermal stability of the compound film but also effectively reduced the self-catalytic dehydrochlorination reaction of poly(vinyl chloride). This overcomes the limitations of unmodified poly(vinyl chloride), such as performance deterioration and color variation due to light exposure. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity of the compound film was substantially enhanced, resulting in outstanding antifouling and self-cleaning properties. These findings suggest that lactic acid-based plasticizer exhibits comparable or even superior overall performance when compared to commercially available plasticizers such as dioctyl phthalate and acetyl tributyl citrate. This work not only addresses the gap in the toxicity assessment of lactic acid plasticizers but also demonstrates their nontoxic characteristics in acute oral toxicity tests. This research offers novel insights into the green synthesis and functional development of biobased plasticizers, showcasing considerable potential for the substituting of dioctyl phthalate.

Abstract:Introducing renewable resources into the production of biological agents and conducting comprehensive performance evaluations of the products is an inevitable trend in promoting sustainable development. Lactic acid is a sustainable and eco-friendly material that is derived from the fermentation of crops such as corn, sweet potatoes, and potatoes. This study synthesized a novel crab-like lactic acid-based plasticizer IPBL by reacting lactic acid with butanol and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). The molecular structure of compound was characterized by FTIR, 1 H NMR, and mass spectrum. The IPBL plasticizer was used to blend poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), and its performance was compared to commercial plasticizers, dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC). The results demonstrated that the PVC film plasticized by IPBL had comparable optical properties, thermal stability, and migration resistance to PVC/DOP and PVC/ATBC. In addition, PVC/IPBL blends exhibit certain hydrophobicity, which has also been shown in stain resistance tests to have potential for anti-fouling and self-cleaning applications. The DMA test showed that IPBL had a lower glass transition temperature (T g ) than commercial plasticizers, resulting in higher elongation at break. Preliminary commercial cost calculations showed that it is superior to the bio-based plasticizer ATBC. The interaction behavior between IPBL and PVC chains was verified by molecular dynamics simulations. These findings demonstrate that the lactic acid-based plasticizer IPBL has excellent capacity as a bio-based alternative to harmful petroleum-based phthalate plasticizers.

Abstract:Conventional plastics can be substituted for protein-based bioplastics due to their natural origin and their biodegradability. Nevertheless, their properties are inferior to those obtained for synthetic plastics. The chemical crosslinking of these bioplastics with aldehydes could improve their properties to compete in the actual market. Thus, the main goal of this article was to assess the influence of the incorporation of aldehydes with different aliphatic chain length on the physicochemical (crosslinking degree, colour and transparency), mechanical (flexural and tensile behaviour) and functional (water uptake capacity and biodegradability) properties of protein-based bioplastics. In this sense, pea protein, a by-product of food industry, was used as raw material, processing it by injection moulding to obtain the bioplastics. Formaldehyde, glyoxal and glutaraldehyde were the aldehydes used as crosslinking agents. The results show the rise of the mechanical properties with the incorporation of the aldehydes, depending on the degree of crosslinking they generate. All this also causes a consequent loss of the water uptake capacity and an increase in biodegradability time. In conclusion, this work opens a new alternative to develop sustainable bioplastics that can be used in the market.

Abstract:The current research efforts in the plasticizer industry should focus on finding renewable biomass chemical feedstocks to synthesize non-toxic and effective bio-based plasticizers in order to adapt to the concept of green environmental protection given the scarcity of petroleum resources and the growing emphasis on health and environmental protection. In this study, lactic acid, DL-malic acid, and levulinic acid were used as the main raw materials in a three-step esterification reaction to successfully synthesize a novel high-efficiency plasticizer (LLMEE) containing multiple ester groups. The structure of LLMEE was characterized and confirmed by FT-IR, 1 H NMR, and time of flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS). The plasticizing properties of LLMEE in PVC were tested and compared to the commercial plasticizers acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC) and dioctyl phthalate (DOP). The results of optical performance showed that, compared to ATBC and DOP, PVC plasticized by 50 phr LLMEE had both high transparency and UV resistance. According to the results of tensile tests, the elongation at break of PVC plasticized by 60 phr LLMEE reached 833.1%, indicating its excellent mechanical properties. The TGA results showed that the thermal stability of PVC plasticized by LLMEE was as comparable to that of PVC plasticized by DOP or ATBC. Most importantly, LLMEE exhibited excellent migration stability in various leaching tests compared to commercial plasticizers. Taken together, the results indicated that compared with ATBC and DOP, LLMEE had better comprehensive performance, which provides a new choice to rationally utilize biomass raw materials to prepare novel environmentally friendly plasticizers.

Synthesis of novel L-lactic acid-based plasticizers and their effects on the flexibility, crystallinity, and optical transparency of poly(lactic acid)

Abstract:Using bio-based plasticizers derived from biomass resources to replace traditional phthalates can avoid the biotoxicity and non-biodegradability caused by the migration of plasticizers during the application of plastics. In this study, L-lactic acid and levulinic acid were employed as the major biomass monomer to successfully fabricate L-lactic acid-based plasticizers (LBL-n, n = 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5) containing a diverse number of lactate groups. The plasticizing mechanism was explained, manifesting that L-lactic acid-based plasticizers containing a substantial number of lactate groups could effectively improve the flexibility of poly (lactic acid) (PLA), and the elongation at break was 590 %-750 %. Compared to LBL-1.5 plasticized-PLA films, the tensile strength and modulus of ketonized-LBL-1.5 (KLBL-1.5) plasticized-PLA films increased to 59 % and 163 %, indicating the ketal functionality of plasticizers enhanced the strength of PLA. Meanwhile, the increment of lactate groups and the introduction of the ketal group in the plasticizer increased the crystallization, migration, and volatilization stability of plasticized-PLA films and also kept their outstanding optical transparency. Besides, the biodegradability of KLBL-1.5 was investigated by active soil and Tenebrio molitor experiments, and its degradation products were characterized. The findings indicated that KLBL-1.5 was fully decomposed. Taken together, this paper offers new promise for developing high-efficiency and biodegradable plasticizers.

Abstract:Because the commonly used phthalate plasticizers have adverse effects on the environment and health, there is a need to develop plasticizers with renewable material sources, non-toxic synthesis, and high plasticizing efficiency. In this study, an eco-friendly bio-based plasticizer, ALCE with excellent migration resistance was synthesized using linoleic acid (LA) and cinnamyl alcohol (CA) from biomass. The composition of ALCE was characterized and confirmed using FTIR and 1 H NMR. The thermal stability, mechanical properties, and migration resistance of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films plasticized with ALCE were compared to those plasticized with conventional plasticizers di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DOP) and di(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DOTP). The plasticizing mechanism of ALCE was elucidated through quantum chemical calculations. The initial decomposition temperature of ALCE-50 was found to be 43.66 °C higher than that of DOTP-50, making it more suitable for high-temperature applications. In tensile testing, PVC films containing 50 phr of ALCE exhibited an elongation at a break of 730.25%, demonstrating superior mechanical properties. Migration experiments also revealed that the migration quantities of ALCE were lower than those of DOP and DOTP. Overall, ALCE, as a plasticizer, enhances PVC's performance in various aspects and offers a new pathway for the development of eco-friendly plasticizers utilizing biomass resources.

Abstract:Plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has been widely used in the world. Petroleum-based plasticizers especially phthalates have been the most common plasticizers used in PVC. However, the global petroleum resources are becoming scarce gradually, and the hygienic requirements for plasticizers are increasing. Owing to the negative impact of petroleum-based plasticizers on human health and the environment, their use has been restricted in the USA, the European and so on. Biomass renewable resources have wide range of sources and low prices, and the chemicals obtained from them have various structures, which can provide a huge platform to design novel PVC plasticizers with the aim of replacing traditional phthalate plasticizers. Many bio-based PVC plasticizers, such as vegetable oil-based plasticizers, cardanol-based plasticizers, lactic acid-based plasticizers, waste cooking oil-based plasticizers, polyester plasticizers, hyperbranched plasticizers and so on, have been extensively studied. We have reviewed recent research progress on different types of novel bio-based PVC plasticizers and assorted them by raw materials and chemical structure. Through in-depth analysis of the relationship between the chemical structure and the plasticizing performance, the efficiency of plasticizers may be predicted before they have been designed. This review will be beneficial for the development of bio-based plasticizers by pointing out the research and application direction.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Bio‐based plasticizer DATAE‐Cn was synthesized from tartaric acid (TA) by a two‐step reaction of acetylation and esterification, and displayed excellent properties after mixing with PVC, including higher transparency, tunable thermal stability, toughness and notable migration stability. Phthalate plasticizers were typical petroleum‐based plasticizers whose application was affected by their negative tendency to be transformed into more risky metabolites such as phthalic acid mono‐2‐ethylhexyl ester (MEHP), which might not be conducive to sustainable development and human health. Therefore, the development of green bio‐based plasticizers was an urgent need. Here, a new class of green bio‐based plasticizer 2,3‐diacetyl tartrate dialkyl esters (DATAE‐Cn) was synthesized by using renewable tartaric acid (TA) as the main raw material, and its structure was characterized by FTIR and 1H NMR. The plasticizing properties of different plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) films were investigated, compared with commercial plasticizers (DEHP and ATBC). The results indicated that PVC films plasticized with the DATAE‐Cn displayed apparently increased thermal stability, plasticizing effect, toughness and migration stability. The addition of DATAE‐Cn minimized the Tg value of PVC from 88.5 to 38.5°C suggesting that the plasticizer had obvious plasticizing effect on PVC. Moreover, when DATAE‐Cn completely replaced the usage of DEHP on PVC, its initial decomposition temperature (Ti) was increased by up to about 34°C. In particular, PVC/DATAE‐Cn exhibited prominent migration resistance in different solvent environments, which was received by solubility parameters analysis, leaching and volatilization tests. These results indicated that green bio‐based plasticizer DATAE‐Cn had potential to replace phthalate plasticizers.

Vanillic Acid as a New Skeleton for Formulating a Biobased Plasticizer

Abstract:Vanillic acid (VA), an abundant renewable biomaterial derived from lignin, has been employed as a new building skeleton to formulate esters. These esters with different alkyl chains (VA4-Cn) were synthesized, characterized, and used as plasticizers for phthalate-free flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). Miscibility analysis reveals that VA4-Cn exhibits good miscibility with PVC and that the length of the alkyl chains of VA4-Cn is the key factor for improving its miscibility. The PVC blends of esters derived from vanillic acid display flexibility and stretchability comparable to or better than those of the PVC blend of dioctyl phthalate (DOP). In particular, PVC/VA4-C1 has a 55% higher elongation at break than PVC/DOP. The thermal stability of PVC/VA4-Cn blends and plasticizer volatility and thermal stability are improved by increasing the alkyl chain length, which may be explained by an increase in the molecular weight. However, the leaching in n-hexane increases with increasing alkyl chain length due to the increased nonpolarity of the plasticizer. Nevertheless, in terms of glass transition temperature reduction, VA4-Cn demonstrated a plasticizing performance that was comparable to or better than that of DOP. In particular, good plasticization was achieved when VA4-C1 was used. The plasticizing effect is excellent without any phase separation at high concentrations. These results suggest that VA4-Cn has great potential as a biobased alternative to traditional phthalate plasticizers.

Abstract:Biomass Plasticizers for PVC: Synthesis & Performance. Using the abundant and cost‐effective oleic acid and isosorbide with excellent properties as raw materials, the plasticizers of isosorbide di‐oleate (IDO) and isosorbide di‐epoxidized oleate (IDEO) with good plasticizing effect, low cost and green safety were synthesized by esterification and epoxidation reaction. The molecular structure of the synthesized plasticizers was characterized by FT‐IR and 1H NMR. The PVC shows better flexibility when IDEO or IDO plasticizer is used than commercial DOP. In particular, IDEO‐40 has 34% higher tensile strength and 17% higher elongation at break than DOP‐40. The introduction of epoxy groups on the carbon–carbon double bond of fatty acids meets the high thermal stability of plasticized film. The residual amount of IDEO‐40 is 7.01%, and at a high temperature of 180 °C, it can maintain high heat resistance for more than 220 min and transmittance of over 86%. Moreover, IDEO demonstrates excellent resistance to migration and volatilization. However, PVC films plasticized with IDO display reduced mechanical properties, cold resistance, and resistance to volatilization and migration due to the presence of non‐rotating carbon–carbon double bonds. The results indicate that these bio‐based plasticizers hold promise for practical applications in PVC products, offering improved environmental sustainability and performance characteristics.

Abstract:Highly stable and highly stretchable poly(vinyl chloride)‐based plastics prepared by adding novel green oligomeric lactate plasticizers Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is one of the most widely applied plastics in the world, with inherent mechanical brittleness and inflexibility in room temperature. With the growing concern for health and safety, especially in some fields (children's toys, food packaging, medical supplies) that require high‐safety plastics, there is an urgent need to develop phthalate‐free high‐performance green PVC products. Herein, by blending novel green oligomeric lactate plasticizers 1, 4‐cyclohexane dimethanol oligomeric lactate‐levulinate (CDOL‐L) and 1,4‐cyclohexane dimethanol oligomeric lactate‐levulinic acid ketal ester (CDOL‐LKE), highly stretchable and highly stable PVC‐based plastics were prepared successfully. CDOL‐L and CDOL‐LKE were synthesized by a green route of esterification and ketalization using biomass as the main raw material, and their structures were jointly confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR and TOF‐MS. Through performance testing, CDOL‐L or CDOL‐LKE plasticized PVC material were determined to have triple high stability (thermal, mechanical and migration stability) superior to DOP, DOTP and ATBC plasticized PVC. The PVC plasticized by CDOL‐L exhibited break at elongation as high as 833.0% at 50 phr addition and 877.1% at 60 phr addition. Moreover, PVC plasticized by 50 phr CDOL‐LKE exhibited relatively better thermal stability (Ti,CDOL‐LKE = 271.4°C) for the special ketal structure on the plasticizer. In conclusion, CDOL‐L and CDOL‐LKE showed potential to substitute traditional plasticizers and pointed a new direction for the preparation of high‐performance PVC‐based plastics.

Abstract:A completely new poly(carbonate-ester) macrodiol (PPCP-mDL), derived from direct copolymerization of carbon dioxide (CO2), propylene oxide (PO), phthalic anhydride (PA) and 1, 4-butanediol (BDO) catalyzed by metal-free triethylborine (TEB)/1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) pairs has been developed. The molecular weight of PPCP-mDL produced varying from 1.1–2.3 kg mol−1 can be easily controlled through the regulation of reaction conditions. For the formulation of non-toxic, phthalate-free flexible PVC, novel and biodegradable ec-PPCP-mDL with high molecular weight may be obtained through end-capping the PPCP-mDL using benzoyl chloride. The ec-PPCP-mDL/PVC blends display better comprehensive plasticization performance than do comparable blends with commercial DEHP plasticizers. These blends exhibit high thermal stability, mechanical properies, plasticizer migration resistance and transmittance. The interaction between ec-PPCP-mDL and PVC has been characterized using FTIR spectroscopy. A possible mode of plasticization has been suggested. The rich ester groups in the structure of ec-PPCP-mDLs interact well with PVC via hydrogen bonding, resulting in excellent compatiblity with PVC. Overall, the novel ec-PPCP-mDL material, respects an attractive alternative to plasticizers as a green, non-toxic, biodegradable, partially sustainable for the preparation of flexible PVC formulations.

Synthesis of azelaic acid copolyester plasticizers and their application in PVC

Abstract:A series of 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (MPO) modified azelaic acid and hexylene glycol copolyester (PHMAZ) plasticizers with varying contents were synthesized using a direct esterification melt polycondensation method, and their structures were characterized systematically. Analysis using infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed the synthesis of the designed copolyester structure. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) tests indicated that the number average molecular weight of each copolyester sample ranged between 2000 and 3000. These copolyesters were used to plasticize polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin, and the glass transition temperature of the plasticized PVC samples was tested using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Further characterization of the plasticizing effects was conducted using an electronic universal testing machine. The research results showed that as the content of MPO increased, the plasticizing effect of the copolyester initially increased and then decreased. Specifically, the copolyester containing 45% MPO, PHMAZ-45, demonstrated the best plasticizing effect on PVC, with the glass transition temperature of the plasticized PVC system around -35 °C, elongation at break at 908.4%, and a plasticizing efficiency of 254.5%. Additionally, this new type of copolyester plasticizer uses bio-based raw materials, exhibits excellent plasticizing effects, and the preparation process is stable and controllable. It holds promising potential to replace traditional volatile and toxic phthalate esters, presenting significant industrial application value.

Abstract:Developing eco-friendly polymeric plasticizers with excellent migration resistance is one of the research hotspots in the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) industry. A low-molecular-weight biobased polyester rubber (LMW-BPR) was synthesized from five biobased polyester monomers in a 100-L reactor and evaluated as a potential eco-friendly polymeric plasticizer for PVC. The obtained LMW-BPR is an amorphous polyester material with a low glass transition temperature of −48°C and a molecular weight of 22 kg/mol, which is lower than that of existing polyester rubber but higher than those of most polyester plasticizer commodities. Plasticized PVC composites with a total plasticizer content of 50 phr were prepared by using the mixture of LMW-BPR and di-isononyl cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DINCH, an eco-friendly monomeric plasticizer commodity) as the plasticizer. The migration resistance test showed that the migration loss of plasticizer in plasticized PVC composite decreased significantly with the increase of LMW-BPR content. When the content of LMW-BPR reaches 30 phr, the plasticized PVC composites are almost nonmigratory. In addition, compared with PVC composite plasticized by pure DINCH, co-plasticized PVC composites containing LMW-BPR exhibit higher tensile strength and thermal stability, and their flexibility, low-temperature resistance and biocompatibility are also maintained at a similar level to the former. Overall, LMW-BPR is an effective eco-friendly polymeric plasticizer for PVC and also sustainable and scalable, thus it is worthy of wide application.

Abstract:In this paper, we synthesized two kinds of bio-based plasticizers (itaconic acid-4-propylguaiacol ester (IPE) and oleic acid-4-Propylguaiacol ester (OPE)) contained benzene groups and alkane chain groups with oleic acid, itaconic acid and 4-propylguaiacol. The performance of plasticized PVC films with IPE and OPE was investigated. The results showed that IPE played an important role as plasticizer on the tensile strength of PVC films, OPE played effect on the tensile strain of PVC films. OPE played more efficient plasticizing effect on PVC than IPE, and the tensile strain of PVC films plasticized with OPE reached 190% and was highest in all the samples. Due to the more benzene rings and ester groups in the chemical structure of IPE, which could form more hydrogen bonds and higher intermolecular interaction force between hydrogen of PVC and IPE than OPE, the compatibility of PVC and IPE was better than OPE. The plasticizing mechanism was also explored. This research would provide new ideas to design new plasticizers with the biomass resources.

Abstract:In recent years, with the increasingly serious environmental pollution, the achievement of a truly circular materials economy approach to sustainability has attracted the attention of scientists. In this paper, we proposed an approach that combined the chemical recycling of poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) plastic with the synthesis of a green plasticizer to promote the development of plastics' reutilization. An efficient alcoholysis strategy was employed to achieve the precise chain scission of PCL into short-chain PCL (sc-PCL), which was subsequently blended with polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The excellent compatibility of PVC/sc-PCL blend was characterized through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and solubility parameters. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) confirmed that the thermostability and plasticity of the plasticized PVC samples were superior to those of most commercial plasticizers' plasticized samples. Meanwhile, the exceptional extraction and migration resistance of PVC/sc-PCL implied that sc-PCL was capable to modify PVC as an ideal plasticizer. The flexible macromolecular structure of sc-PCL and the high percentage of polar ester groups made sc-PCL closely entangled with PVC, thus exhibiting excellent plasticizing properties. This trash into treasure strategy was also applicable to commercial PCL products, which will open up a new direction for chemical recycling of plastics as well as design and synthesis of green plasticizers.

Abstract:Poly(1,2-propylene glycol adipate) (PPA) was used as an environmentally friendly plasticizer in flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). Thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties of the PVC/PPA blends were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, tensile test, scanning electron microscopy and small amplitude oscillatory shear rheometry. The results showed that PPA lowered the glass transition temperature of PVC. The introduction of PPA could decrease tensile strength and Young's modulus of the PVC/PPA blends; however, elongation-at-break was dramatically increased due to the plastic deformation. The plasticization effect of PPA was also manifested by the decrease of dynamic storage modulus and viscosity in the melt state of the blends. The results indicated that PPA had a good plasticizing effect on PVC.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to develop a facile one-pot reaction for the synthesis of biomass-based hyperbranched poly(ether)s end-capped as acetate esters (BHE) for use as a sustainable, safe and feasible plasticizer for flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) materials. BHE is completely miscible with PVC but shows weaker plasticizing effect than dioctyl phthalate (DOP) (EΔTg value of BHE reaches 64.8%). PVC plasticized with BHE displays greater thermal stability than that of PVC or PVC plasticized with DOP materials. BHE improves the thermal stability and flexibility of PVC materials. As a plasticizer, BHE displays lower solvent extractability and greater volatilization resistance than DOP. Acute oral toxicity indicates that BHE has toxic doses of 5 g/kg, suggesting that BHE is non-toxic.

Abstract:Increasing evidence has shown that plasticizer pollution and waste fatty acid contamination are serious environmental issues in our daily lives. Herein, an environmental friendly plasticizer (waste momomer fatty acid-based methyl tetraglycol ester, WMA-MTE) was designed and prepared via the direct esterification of waste momomer fatty acid derived from dimer acid manufacturing and methyl tetraglycol. The resulting WMA-MTE was used as a potential alternative for toxic petro-based dioctyl phthalate (DOP) in plasticizing poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The properties of plasticized PVC including low temperature capability, tensile properties, thermal stability, and migration resistance were dependent on the content of WMA-MTE. Among them, the overall performances of PVC plasticized with 100% WMA-MTE (PVC/WMA-MTE) were better than others, which could be attributed to the excellent abilities of oxethyl units in WMA-MTE in both improving the compatibility and flexibility. Importantly, WMA-MTE could be biodegraded only by being buried in soil.
