Abstract:In this work, ZnCl2aqueous solution was used to treat wheat straw material to modify the chemi-mechanical pulping property. The effects of ZnCl2dosage, impregnation time, treating temperature, and treating time were evaluated by single-factor experiments. The analysis of FT-IR, XRD and SEM was applied to show the variations in micro-properties of the wheat straw and pulp fibers. The optimal conditions were determined as ZnCl2dosage of 8%, impregnation time of 15min, treating temperature of 70°C, and treating time of 60min. Compared with those of the bleached chemi-thermo-mechanical pulp, the refining energy of the bleached chemi-mechanical pulp by treatment of ZnCl2aqueous solution was decreased by 21.8%, the accept yield was increased by 4.6%, the whiteness was increased by 5.7%, tensile index was increased by 15.3%, burst index was increased by 18.6%, and the bulk was decreased by 2.9%. There were no significant variations in the analysis of FT-IR, XRD or the integral surface morphology of the wheat straw chips and pulps. However, there were a little more damages on the surface of the pulps prepared with pretreatment of ZnCl2aqueous solution.
Modification on the Chemi-mechanical Pulping Property of Rice Straw with Alkali-urea System

Abstract:NaOH-thiourea-urea aqueous solution was used to modify the chemi-mechanical pulping property of rice straw. The effects of alkali dosage, soaking time, treating temperature, and treating time were evaluated by single-factor experiments. The analysis of FT-IR, XRD and SEM was applied to show the variations on the micro-properties of the rice straw and pulp fibers. The optimal conditions were determined as an alkali dosage of 6%, a soaking time of 15min, a freezing temperature of -5℃, and a freezing time of 60 min. There were no significant effects on the structure of the functional groups and crystalline region, or the integral fiber morphology of the rice straw chips, however, there were a little more damages on the single fiber surface morphology of the bleached pulp prepared with the NaOH-thiourea-urea aqueous solution.

Abstract:Wheat straw and pulps are pretreated with hemicellulase from the culture filtration of Aspergillus niger An-76 prior to sodapulping and bleaching respectively,and the effect of enzyme pretreatment on the results of chemical pulping and bleaching is studied.Theresults show that,compared with conventional soda pulping,the pulpability of wheat straw is improved by hemicellusase pretreatment,andpulps with lower kappa number,lower rejects with similar yields of screened pulps could be produced,and the consumption of activealkali is decreased during chemical pulping,and the physical properties of pulp are also improved.Bleachability of enzymatic-chemical-pulps and strength properties of the bleached pulp are satisfactory.Hemicellulase pretreatment prior to bleaching can not only improvethe bleachability of pulps,produce pulps with 90% ISO plus brightness,but also improve physical properties of the bleached pulps.

Abstract:The pretreatment of biomass materials is critical for improvement of the overall production process and product quality. In this work, a dilute zinc chloride (ZnCl2) solution was used to pretreat bamboo chips, followed by defiberization (mechanical pulping). Compared to the results from the traditional chemi-thermomechanical pulping process, the results from this study showed that the refining energy consumption of the modified process was lowered 27%, and the tensile and burst index of the resultant pulp increased 22% and 82%, respectively. The morphological changes on the fiber surface, functional groups, and crystallinity of resultant pulps due to the ZnCl2 treatment were also analyzed.

Abstract:Cotton is widely planted in China, and cotton stalk, the agricultural residues, is one of most promising fiber sources in China. For a long time, there is no appropriate pulping method for this raw material. The usage of cotton stalk is very limited in the papermaking industry in China. In this paper, a neoteric pulping method, alkaline peroxide extruding pulp (APEP), and its application on cotton stalk are introduced. The dark layer skin of cotton stem is removed by a debarker first. The main chemicals used in the pulping process are alkali and peroxide, and the extruder screw is used as the mechanical treatment. The structure of extruder screw and the pulping theory of APEP are discussed. Then an orthogonal test design in the cotton stalk pulping is used in the experiments to obtain the optimal conditions and the main parameters in the chemical pretreatment stage according to the changes of the physical properties of the paper sheets. Results show that compared to the KP process, the pulp of APEP process produced a much higher yield and brightness with less chemical dosage and lower energy consumption than KP. Meanwhile the pulp also acquired a good physical strength close to cotton stalk of KP. Through bleaching, the brightness of APEP pulp could get above 80% ISO.

Abstract:The outer surface of wheat straw (WS) plays a critical role for the penetration of chemicals in the pulping production. In this study, we characterized the changes of outer surface before and after enzyme treatment. The results showed that neutral cellulase and lipase had different effects on the microscopic morphology of the outer surface of WS. Both enzyme treatments reduced the silicon content on the outer surface of WS, and the effects of neutral cellulase treatment were more obvious. Neutral cellulase mainly destroyed the vascular bundles on the outer surface of WS, degraded part of the cellulose, and then promoted the shedding of the siliceous layer connected to the cellulose, while lipase mainly destroyed the cuticle on the outer surface of WS. Furthermore, neutral cellulase promoted the dissolution of various sugar components, especially the dissolution of glucose. The dissolution of glucose had increased by 7 times with the addition of neutral cellulase. Therefore, adding a process of enzyme treatment before pulping production could destroy the microstructure of the outer surface of WS, provide favorable conditions for the penetration of chemicals in the subsequent pulping process, and reduce the use of chemicals.Graphical abstractThe wheat straw was treated with neutral cellulase and lipase, and the membrane on the outer surface of the wheat straw was destroyed, which provided favorable conditions for the chemical soaking in the subsequent pulping process.

Abstract:In this paper,the influence of xylanase treatment on the surface morphology and chemical composition of wheat straw pulp was investigated.The results indicate that the xylanase treatment may change the surface morpho-logy and chemical composition of wheat straw pulp,soften the pulp fiber and roughen the fiber surface with obvious crackles and flakes.Moreover,the ESCA and SEM results show that the lignin coverage on the pulp surface increases after the xylanase treatment,and that the coverage also increases with the dosage of xylanase.

Abstract:Bleached wheat straw pulp was treated with cellulase systems under the optimized conditions. The results showed that the optimum treatment intensity of the pulp with cellulase systems is enzyme dosage 4 U/g and treatment time 0.5 h. The enzyme dosage is the key factor on the improvement of drainage property of the pulp. The improvement of pulp drainability is mainly related to endoglucanase dosage (CMC'ase)in the cellulase systems. At the treated intensity of enzymatic modification, the enzyme treatment had no substantial effect on the strength properties of the pulp.

Abstract:The fiber surface morphology of xylanase treated wheat straw pulp was investigated with scanning electron microscope and it was found that xylanase treatment led to the change of fiber surface structure from the wheat straw pulp. The results show that the fiber of untreated wheat straw pulp was stiff and its surface structure was smoother. With the increase of enzyme dosage, the fiber surface became rougher and rougher, and the crinkle, cracks and surface spalling became more and more. When the enzyme dosage was increased to 15U/g, the surface spalling of wheat straw fiber was extremely severe with the appearance of partial crack even large area of groove. It was also found that the brightness of the xylanase pretreated and after treated bleached pulp were both higher than that of the untreated pulp and their physical strength was also better.

Abstract:The influence of operational variables in the Chemi-mechanical pulping of wheat straw [viz. hydrogen peroxide (2%similar to 5% on oven-dry wheat straw), active alkali (calculated as NaOH, 2%similar to 8% on oven-dry wheat straw), chelating agent (EDTA on oven-dry wheat straw 0.1 similar to 0.8%), cooking time (45-90min) and temperature (60 similar to 80 degrees C)] on the pulp properties were studied in this work, as well as the optical properties of paper sheets made from it. The ECF bleaching sequence was investigated. The optimal pretreatment condition was as follows: active charge 6%, hydrogen peroxide 4%, EDTA 0.5%, time 1 h, and temperature 70 degrees C. What's more, the double pretreatment can got better results with brightness 44.1%ISO. ECF bleaching (D(1)P(3)P(2), D as an activation stage) can provide bleached pulp with brightness 72.5%.

Abstract:This study has been conducted to assess the pulpability of ultrafiltered pectinase and xylanase in pulping of wheat straw. Best biopulping conditions were achieved using 107 and 250 IU of pectinase and xylanase, respectively, per gram of wheat straw, 180 min of treatment period, one gram: 10 m1 material to liquor ratio, 8.5 pH and 55 °C temperature. Ultrafiltered enzymatic treatment improved the pulp yield (6.18%), brightness (17.83%), along with reduced rejections (61.01%) and kappa number (16.95%) as compared to chemically synthesized pulp. Biopulping of wheat straw saved 14% alkali dose, with nearly same optical properties, as obtained under 100% alkali dose. Bio-chemically pulped samples resulted an increase in breaking length, tear index, burst index, viscosity, double fold and Gurley porosity by 6.05%, 18.64%, 26.42%, 7.94%, 21.6% and 15.38%, respectively, in comparison to control pulp samples. Bleached-biopulped samples showed an improvement in breaking length, tear index, burst index, viscosity, double fold number, and Gurley porosity by 7.39%, 3.55%, 28.82%, 9.1%, 53.66%, and 30.95% respectively. Thus, biopulping of wheat straw with ultrafiltered enzymes lowers alkali consumption and also improves the paper quality. This is the first study reporting, eco-friendly biopulping, for producing better quality wheat straw pulp, using ultrafiltered enzymes.

Abstract:The fiber length and coarseness of wheat straw pulp before and after xylanase treatment were measured with fiber analyzer and the results show that the fiber length and coarseness of wheat straw pulp changed due to xylanase treatment. The results show that the length of fiber was shortened after xylanase treatment and the distribution frequency of medium length fibre decreased and that of fiber fines increased after xylanase treatment. At the same time,the coarseness decreased and fine component content increased. The coarseness decreased by 2.4 mg/ 100m and the fiber fines content increased by 6.52%.

Abstract:Before oxygen bleaching and hydrogen peroxide bleaching, wheat straw pulp was bleached using xylanase. The effect of enzymatic stage on pulp properties and bleachability has been studied and compared with reference (control) pulps, processed without enzyme addition. Experimental results showed that, the optimal concentration of wheat straw pulp was 10%, the optimal treatment time and dose of enzyme was 60 min and 1.25AXU/g respectively. Oxygen pressure decreased from 0.6MPa to 0.5MPa when conditions of hydrogen peroxide bleachingremained unchanged and wheat straw pulp achieved the same whiteness. Hydrogen peroxide consumption decreased from 2% to 1.8% when oxygen bleaching has the same conditions and achieved the same white degree.

Abstract:Three different pre-extraction methods (i.e., acetic acid, sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide) were used for the pretreatment followed by chemi-thermomechanical treatments and then enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat straw to produce fermentable sugars. The performance of enzymatic hydrolysis by the synergistic effect of pre-extractions and chemi-thermomechanical treatments was remarkable. Results showed that the pre-extraction combining with the chemi-thermomechanical treatments shorten the enzymatic hydrolysis time and improved the glucose yield at the same enzyme loadings. The chemical components, swelling ability, and crystallinity, as well as the surface morphology of the substrates were changed obviously. All of these changes can affect the accessibility of enzymes to cellulose in the substrates to a certain extent.
A Study on Biological Enzyme Modification of Bamboo Pulp and Its Application

Abstract:The influences of biological enzyme pretreatment on bamboo pulp and the application of enzyme-assisted bamboo pulp in refining used for household paper were researched in this paper. The results show that selected four factors all have significal effects on modifying result. The optimum technological conditions were obtained as follow: pulp pretreatment time 60 min, pulp pretreatment temperature 30℃, pulp pretreatment pH 7.0, enzyme dosage 0.025%(mass f ractions). In production trial, the pulp was improved by enzyme pretreatment, with the pulp refining energy consumption dropped by 6.9%, the tensile strength in CD and MD increased by 17.6% and 6.5% respectively.

Abstract:Efficient pretreatment of wheat straw (WS) under mild conditions facilitates its further enzymatic hydrolysis and conversion. Three pretreatment processes with mild conditions including formic acid pretreatment (FAP), sodium chlorite pretreatment (SCP), and alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) pretreatment were investigated in this study. The chemical components of WS before and after pretreatment were compared, and the samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The lignin removal by FAP, SCP, and AHP pretreatment was 55.79%, 99.33%, and 94.97%, and the enzymatic hydrolysis yields (EHY) were 68.03%, 75.52%, and 90.76%, respectively. The results showed that AHP pretreatment had a better performance on enzyme accessibility thus improving the EHY. Meanwhile, lignin can be separated from the AHP pretreatment liquid, which helps to improve the economics of the process. The effects of enzymes and additives on enzymatic hydrolysis were further optimized by response surface methodology. Under the conditions of 20.37 FPU/g cellulase, 32.14 IU/g xylanases, and 19.15 mg/g Tween 80, the experimental result showed that the maximum EHY was 94.15%, which was close to the predicted EHY (96.19%). The experiments on fed-batch mode after AHP pretreatment with high-solid loadings (20% w/v) were conducted, and the EHY reached 86.05%. These results contributed to improving the economic feasibility of WS pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis process.

Abstract:The effect of xylanase treatment on DP bleaching of wheat straw pulp was investigated. The results show that the optimal technological conditions of AU-PE89 xylanase treatment are as follows: xylanase dosage 7U g(-1), temperature 50 degrees C, time 90 similar to 120min and pH 7.0 similar to 8.0. The brightness of xylanase treated pulp after DP bleaching increased by 3.7 % ISO. The brightness of DP bleached wheat straw pulp is improved with different sequence of xylanase treatment. The order of pulp brightness is DXP > DPX > XDP According to the bleaching effect, it can be concluded that the suitable xylanase treatment sequences were DXP sequence and DPX sequence.

Abstract:The properties of mixed waste pulp were improved by enzyme treatment combining with beating. According to results of various combined treatments, it was found that hemicellulase treatment-beating combination was the best choice, both drainage ability, tensile and burst strength of the mixed waste pulp were improved significantly.

Abstract:Predipping with hydrogen peroxide, basic zeolite catalyzed pulping and its impact on enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat straw were studied with two kinds of solid which are catalyst A and B. It is found that levulinic acid and formic acid presented in black liquor could reach 5.144 2 mg/ ml and 6.709 6 mg/ml respectively, the hydrolysis yields with catalyst A and B were 18.38% and 23.16% respectively. Farther analysis with atomic force microscopy found that chemical structure change has more influence on enzymatic hydrolysis than that of physical structure change.

Abstract:In this paper,problems occurred in the traditional pulping technology of wheat straw are analyzed and the reasons of these problems were discussed. On the basis of the characteristics of wheat straw, an ideal method of integrated pulping which includes displacement process of cooking, washing and bleaching together in a vertical digester is suggested. Those problems occurred in cooking, bleaching and the recovery of black liquor of traditional pulping technology could be overcome.
