A Comparison of Thought of Transforming the Ruling System Between China and Japan from 16~(th) to 19~(th) Century

Abstract:Under the background of Western countries’ invasion of Orient and introduction of Western learning into Eastern countries from 16th to 19th century,the intellectuals of both China and Japan discussed deeply on the issues about the ruling order and ruling system.Japanese elite took the lead in querying the shogunate-domain system,and disputed fiercely around issue of system conversion.At the same time there are relatively few people who advocated reforming the system of government in China.As far as changing the form of government is concerned,Japan took the form of Restoration,instead of imitating simply Western Democracy,and established the Tenno absolutist regime,which means transformation from pure feudal style of government to the final political form of feudalism,namely autocracy.In the same period,the movement for reforming the ruling system in China started later and took on radical development momentum.The revolution rose rapidly after the moderate political reformation failed in late 19th century and caused the overthrow of Qing Dynasty and establishment of the first Republic in Asia.In short,There are differences in thought of reforming ruling system between China and Japan,which influenced the formation of modern nation state of the two countries and resulted in different road to modernization.
