Abstract:AbstrcatThe calculation of band structure and analysis of light propagation in photonic crystals are basic and important issues. The plane wave expansion method to calculate band structure and the Floquet-Bloch theory to analyze light propagation in periodic dielectric materials are discussed emphatically. The electromagnetic waves in photonic crystals can be expressed as a series of spacial harmonics. The propagation direction of light in photonic crystals is consistent with wave energy or group velocity. The behavior of light can be analyzed qualitatively by using wave vector diagram.

Abstract:Properties of photonic band gap and light propagation in one-dimensional multicomponent photonic crystal have been studied with the optical transfer matrix method. We mainly analyze the relation of photonic band-gap property with the arrangement of components, the refractive index and the geometrical thickness. In this study, the methods to change the width and the location of the existing photonic band-gaps in multicomponent photonic crystal are proposed.

Abstract:A plane-wave expansion in method has been developed to investigate the off-plane propagation of electromagnetic waves in a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal. Photonic band-structure calculations indicate that some 2D crystal structures can support a common band gap for both polarizations and for all off-plane angles from 0 degrees up to 90 degrees. The presence of such an omnidirectional absolute band gap implies that a 2D photonic crystal can exhibit some of the functionalities of a three-dimensional crystal with a complete band gap.

Abstract:Using transfer matrix method,we calculated and analyzed the relationships between 1-D photonic crystal transmission spectrum and each of center wavelength and the ratio of the refractive indices of two dielectric materials of 1-D photonic crystal when the incidence angle was zero and the optical thicknesses of two dielectric materials were λ0/4,where λ0 is center wavelength.We also gained a method for calculating optical thicknesses and refractive indices of two mediums of 1-D photonic crystal when the band gap range of vertical incident light is certain.

Abstract:Using the plane-wave method, we calculate the band structures and transmission characteristics of the three-dimensional fcc photonic crystals. For a SiO2 opa l photonic crystal, we calculate the energy spectrum and the transmission featu re of electromagnetic waves along the [111] direction using both the plane-wave method and the transfer-matrix method, the obtained results are consistent wit h each other. For a full band gap studies of the inverse-opal structure, the co nvergence effect in the plane-wave method on the calculation is discussed. For an fcc lattice of core-shell sphere, it is shown that the relative L-gap width of a suitable coating of dielectric spheres of a lower dielectric material can increase by 50% as compared with that of homogeneous high-dielectric spheres. We also find that the optimum radius ratio between interior and entire spheres is 0.69.

Abstract:We theoretically deduce the Bragg gap vanishing conditions in one-dimensional photonic crystals and experimentally demonstrate the m=0 band-gap vanishing phenomena at microwave frequencies. In the case of mismatched impedance, the Bragg gap will vanish as long as the discrete modes appear in photonic crystals containing dispersive materials, while for the matched impedance cases, Bragg gaps will always disappear. The experimental results and the simulations agree extremely well with the theoretical expectation. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America
Photonic Band Structures Solved by A Plane-Wave-Based Transfer-Matrix Method

Abstract:Transfer-matrix methods adopting a plane-wave basis have been routinely used to calculate the scattering of electromagnetic waves by general multilayer gratings and photonic crystal slabs. In this paper we show that this technique, when combined with Bloch's theorem, can be extended to solve the photonic band structure for 2D and 3D photonic crystal structures. Three different eigensolution schemes to solve the traditional band diagrams along high-symmetry lines in the first Brillouin zone of the crystal are discussed. Optimal rules for the Fourier expansion over the dielectric function and electromagnetic fields with discontinuities occurring at the boundary of different material domains have been employed to accelerate the convergence of numerical computation. Application of this method to an important class of 3D layer-by-layer photonic crystals reveals the superior convergency of this different approach over the conventional plane-wave expansion method.
Theoretical Analysis of Optimum Parameters for Complete Forbidden Bands of Three-Dimensional Photonic Crystals with Typical Lattice Structures

Abstract:Based on plane wave expansion method, the influence of factors such as lattice structure, dielectric constant ratio and filling ratio on three-dimensional photonic crystals with fcc, diamond and woodpile structures is studied. Of these structures, the fcc structure, owing to its high symmetry, is only fit for close-packed lattice prepared by inverted-opal method. The diamond structure easily generates good complete band gaps with high band gap ratio, and also the complete forbidden band that is needed can be obtained by adjusting some parameters in the experiment. The woodpile structure can produce big band gaps in a wider parameter range than the other two structures, which offers convenience for preparing three-dimensional photonic crystals in the laboratory. For all three kinds of three-dimensional photonic crystal structures, their band gap width and band gap ratio can be improved with the increase of dielectric constant ratio. In this paper, some interesting phenomena not noticed in the former papers are also presented.

Abstract:This paper has theoretically studied the characteristic frequencies of band structures in two-dimensional metallic dielectric photonic crystals. It is demonstrated that a large filling fraction benefits the existence of absolute photonic bandgap, while a smaller filling fraction benefits an absolute negative refraction band. In addition, it also finds that the relation between the cut-off frequency of E-polarized wave and the filling fraction exceeding 10% is content with a linear increasing function, whose coefficients are exponential to the normalized lattice constant. These investigations have significant implications for tuning the operational frequencies to desired applications and manufacturing photonic crystals.

Abstract:The plane-wave expansion method is used to calculate the band structure of a two-dimensional photonic crystal formed by a triangular lattice of anisotropic elliptic cylinders. After optimizing the parameters of the elliptic cylinders, we End a large bandgap (about 0.0449 w(e), w(e), = 2pic/a) at high frequencies beside a coexisting large absolute gap (about 0.035 w(e)) at low frequencies. Numerical results show that the optimal design is very stable under any parameter perturbation.

Abstract:In this paper, we have studied band gap structure, light field distribution, and the propagating direction in the two-dimensional function photonic crystal waveguide. For the two-dimensional function photonic crystal waveguide, the dielectric constant of dielectric column is the space coordinate function, which can be realized by the electro-optic effect and the Kerr effect. The dielectric constant function form of the dielectric column is epsilon(r) = kr + b, the parameters k and b can be adjusted by changing the applied electric field. By changing the dielectric constant parameters k or b, we found the two-dimensional function photonic crystal waveguide transmission characteristics have the adjustability, i.e., band gap and position, defects mode number and position, the propagating direction, and light field distribution can be changed by adjusting the dielectric constant parameters k or b. It can be used to conveniently design the band gap structure, light field distribution, and the propagating direction that we need. It provides a new designed methods for optical device, such as dynamic optical device, optical switch and so on.

Abstract:Complete band gaps are found in one-dimensional photonic crystals composed of negative-permittivity and negative-permeability materials. The mechanism of these complete band gaps, unlike the Bragg complete gaps formed by interferences of forward/backward propagating waves, originate from the evanescent wave tunneling in the single-negative materials is reported for the first time. Moreover, it is also reported for the first time that both Bragg complete gaps and evanescent wave tunneling complete gaps exist in a three-constituent one-dimensional photonic structure simultaneously.

Abstract:The identification of a complete three-dimensional (3D) photonic band gap in real crystals always employs theoretical or numerical models that invoke idealized crystal structures. Thus, this approach is prone to false positives (gap wrongly assigned) or false negatives (gap missed). Therefore, we propose a purely experimental probe of the 3D photonic band gap that pertains to many different classes of photonic materials. We study position and polarization-resolved reflectivity spectra of 3D inverse woodpile structures that consist of two perpendicular nanopore arrays etched in silicon. We observe intense reflectivity peaks $(R > 90\%)$ typical of high-quality crystals with broad stopbands. We track the stopband width versus pore radius, which agrees much better with the predicted 3D photonic band gap than with a directional stop gap on account of the large numerical aperture used. A parametric plot of s-polarized versus p-polarized stopband width agrees very well with the 3D band gap and is model-free. This practical probe provides fast feedback on the advanced nanofabrication needed for 3D photonic crystals and stimulates practical applications of band gaps in 3D silicon nanophotonics and photonic integrated circuits, photovoltaics, cavity QED, and quantum information processing.

Abstract:Photonic crystal is a composite dielectric with periodic modulation of refractive index that brings about unique photonic band-gap effect by which light could be totally reflected on the surface of such material regardless of any incident angle or mode. Many applications based on this mechanism have been developed and introduced into new waveguides. Such band-gap effect could be understood by investigating the optical performance of one dimensional photonic crystal. In this paper, the principle of band-gap effect of one dimension photonic crystal is firstly explained by Bragg reflection, the band-gap centre is obtained; then the modelling of band-gap of one dimension photonic crystal is conducted as well, the result is in agreement with the Bragg results and shows that the centre of photonic band-gap shifts to larger wavelength with higher refractive index (RI) ratio or dimension ratio between the two component dielectrics, but the involved boundary condition in simulation leads to higher onset RI ratio (3.5) responsible for the presence of photonic band-gap. This work would be useful to the design and fabrication of photonic crystal devices.

Abstract:A complete bandgap photonic crystal based on hexagonal lattice has been presented in this paper.Based on hexagonal lattice with GaAs material,we connect the lattice with waveguide and add the hollow structure in the crystal lattice.The modified plane-wave expansion method is used to calculate the band structure.The simulation results show that its maximum absolute bandgap Δω is 0.061 9ωe,the middle frequency of the band gap is 0.663ωe,and the relative bandgap is 9.3%.Compared to the traditional hexagonal lattice structure,the novel photonic crystal structure owns a large absolute bandgap and relative bandgap.

Abstract:The self-arrangement of colloidal crystal in the fee and bcc lattices is one way available to fabricate three dimensional periodic microstructures in the micron- and submicron-size regimes. The photonic band gaps (PBG) structure with its atom composed of two conjugate dielectric sphere in the uniform dielectric medium is revealed to possess full hand gap both in fee and bcc lattices. The photonic band structure is strongly dependent on the direction of the atom axis and there exist for both lattices some favorable directions of atom in opening a full hand gap. It is (1: 1, 1) for fee lattice and (2, 1, 0) for bcc lattice. The combination of such a PEG structure with the self-arrangement technique of colloidal crystal can provide a potential to fabricate the three dimensional photonic crystal with a full band gap in the optical regime.

Abstract:Properties of the photonic bandgaps effect and guided modes in triangular photonic crystal fibers have been studied by means of a full-vectorial plane-wave expansion method. Photonic crystal fibers under consideration consist of a triangular array of microscopic holes forming a two-dimensional photonic crystal cladding and a defect as their core. The photonic band-structure for photonic crystal cladding structures and the field intensity distribution of defect mode with various air-filling fractions and defect size are calculated. Guidance mechanisms in photonic crystal fibers with different configuration are also investigated.

Abstract:Based on plane wave expansion method, the complete band-gaps of two-dimensional long wave infrared photonic crystals photonic crystals with square, hexagonal, honeycomb and chessboard lattices are studied. The influence of the filling ratio on the peak value of relative width and complete band gap is analyzed when the structure is fixed, and also the relation between the relative width of complete band gap and refractive index of materials is discussed when the filling ratio is fixed. It is useful for materials selection and structure design of long wave infrared photonic crystal.
