Abstract:Two different methods (plane wave expansion method and the finite differential of time domain method) are employed to calculate the complete band gap of a two - dimensional photonic crystal consisting of anisotropic elliptic cylinders of Tellurium. After choosing appropriately the axes of the elliptic cylinders and the lattice constants, a very large complete band gap (about 0.051 omega(e), where omega(e) = 2pic/L-y, L-y is the lattice constant along the long axis of the elliptic cylinders). This large complete band gap of the photonic crystal is very stable under the perturbation of the optimally designed parameters.

Abstract:Large absolute band gaps are searched among photonic crystals whose unit cells are formed by large dielectric pixels. To speed up the computation, a fast plane-wave expansion method is introduced for calculating the band structures for such special photonic crystals. Two structures are found to have absolute band gaps of 0.1158(2pic/a) and 0.11(2pic/a) (a is the period of the square lattice) at the low- and high-frequency regions, respectively. Both structures are stable and convenient for fabrication.

Abstract:A new large absolute photonic bandgap at high normalized frequencies can be obtained in a two-dimensional hexagonal structure with alumina cylinders in air by reducing the symmetry of the structure. An instructive procedure is described for finding the optimal configuration which gives the maximum absolute bandgap Δω = 0.091(2πc/a).

Abstract:The 1-dimension photonic crystal is descripted by using acoustic technique.MaxwellI equation is reduced to Schrodinger equation if assuming free damping,free current,free magnetism and homogeneity for material,but Schrodinger equation is further reduced to Mathieu equation if deflected index is cosine form.It shows that there are a series of stable zones and unstable zones(stop band)in the plane of parameter δ and e.When,these unstable zones will be reduced to some points in the centre of the stop-bands.The stop-bands widths are obtained by the perturbation techniques.The result shows that the widths of the first order and second order unstable zones depend on the parameters of dielectric and photonic frequency.Only suitable regulating these parameters,the band-structure can be regulated,thus the photonic crystal with a variable properties can be obtained.

Abstract:The plane-wave expansion method is used to calculate the band structure of a two-dimensional photonic crystal formed by a hexagonal structure of anisotropic cylinders. Two cylindrical inclusions in the unit cell have two different radii, R-1 and R-2 (R-1 < R-2). By reducing the symmetry of the structure and choosing appropriately parameters R-2 and s = R-1/R-2 (s < 1), we obtain six large complete bandgaps, among which three are over 0.05 omega(e) (where omega(e) = 2pic/a) in the high region of the normalized frequency (however, one of these over 0.065 omega(e) is not stable). There are two other stable complete bandgaps in the low-frequency region.

Abstract:Properties of photonic band gap and light propagation in one-dimensional multicomponent photonic crystal have been studied with the optical transfer matrix method. We mainly analyze the relation of photonic band-gap property with the arrangement of components, the refractive index and the geometrical thickness. In this study, the methods to change the width and the location of the existing photonic band-gaps in multicomponent photonic crystal are proposed.

Abstract:The plane-wave expansion method is used to calculate the band structure of a two-dimensional photonic crystal formed by a triangular lattice of anisotropic elliptic cylinders. After optimizing the parameters of the elliptic cylinders, we End a large bandgap (about 0.0449 w(e), w(e), = 2pic/a) at high frequencies beside a coexisting large absolute gap (about 0.035 w(e)) at low frequencies. Numerical results show that the optimal design is very stable under any parameter perturbation.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to a numerical algorithm for the maximization of band gaps in two-dimensional photonic crystals in square lattices. We first apply the finite element method to solve the eigenvalue problem, then use the piecewise constant level set (PCLS) method to maximize the band gaps. The PCLS method is very powerful for representing and modeling regions of different structures. Extremely large gaps are realized with gallium arsenide material, for transverse magnetic field (TM), transverse electric field (TE), and for complete band gaps. When the mean gap frequency is below 1, the biggest gap is about 0.2922 for the TE.

Abstract:We theoretically deduce the Bragg gap vanishing conditions in one-dimensional photonic crystals and experimentally demonstrate the m=0 band-gap vanishing phenomena at microwave frequencies. In the case of mismatched impedance, the Bragg gap will vanish as long as the discrete modes appear in photonic crystals containing dispersive materials, while for the matched impedance cases, Bragg gaps will always disappear. The experimental results and the simulations agree extremely well with the theoretical expectation. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:This paper has theoretically studied the characteristic frequencies of band structures in two-dimensional metallic dielectric photonic crystals. It is demonstrated that a large filling fraction benefits the existence of absolute photonic bandgap, while a smaller filling fraction benefits an absolute negative refraction band. In addition, it also finds that the relation between the cut-off frequency of E-polarized wave and the filling fraction exceeding 10% is content with a linear increasing function, whose coefficients are exponential to the normalized lattice constant. These investigations have significant implications for tuning the operational frequencies to desired applications and manufacturing photonic crystals.

Abstract:A wide range of mesoscopic phononic materials can exhibit frequency bands where transmission is forbidden, i.e. band gaps. Three different mechanisms for their origin can be distinguished, namely Bragg, hybridization and weak elastic coupling effects. Characteristic properties of gaps of different origins are investigated and compared, for a 3D crystal of tungsten carbide beads in water, a 2D crystal of nylon rods in water, and a 3D opal-like structure of weakly sintered aluminum beads. For the second type of crystal, it is shown that Bragg and hybridization gaps can be overlapped, allowing the study of the interaction between these two mechanisms. Atypical dispersion characteristics are demonstrated near the resonance frequency.

Abstract:Three kinds of square metallodielectric photonic crystals have been fabricated. In these crystals, a very small metal cylinder is inserted into the center of each unit cell, while the dielectric cylinders are located at the corners of each unit cell. The transmissions of these photonic crystals have been measured in the microwave region. Compared with dielectric photonic crystals, the first photonic band gap is enlarged by a factor of 2. The experimental results agree well with the simulation obtained by the multiscattering approach. This method may be valuable for the design of photonic crystals with a large band gap.

Abstract:A revised plane-wave expansion method for quickly calculating the band structure of a photonic crystal of pixel type is used to design a photonic crystal of triangular lattice with a large absolute band gap. The triangular lattice is treated as a rectangular lattice (of lattice constants a and b, here a > b) with a larger unit cell. When b = 0.404a and the rectangular inclusion rod has a size of 0.12a x 0.12a, a large absolute band gap Deltaomega = 0.1364omega(e) (where omega(e) = 2pic/a, c is light speed) is found at a mid-gap frequency omega(mid) = 1.0444omega(e), with Deltaomega/omega(mid) = 13.1%.

Abstract:The photonic band structures depend on both the crystal symmetry and composing elements of the primary cell, the opening up of photonic gap is determined by the dielectric modulation in space. Since the high-dielectric medium acts as attractive centers while the metallic medium acts as repulsive centers for the field, the photonic crystals composed of a periodic arrangement of both high-dielectric and metallic spheres will have the highest dielectric contrast. The field distribution in such crystals is expected to resemble the electron distribution in ionic crystals, thus it should favor the formation of the absolute band gap. We show as an example that in GaAs-type photonic crystals this does prove to be the case and three large absolute gaps are found.

Abstract:Using the plane-wave expansion method, we study the propagation of Lamb wave mode in three-component phononic crystals plates. The influence of filling fraction, material parameters and especially the ratio of the thickness of the plates to the lattice period on the band gaps of Lamb wave mode are analyzed by numerical simulations. The optimum gap is obtained by tuning the thickness of the plates and the filling fraction.

Abstract:We simulate the changes of the photonic band structure of the crystal in two dimensions with a quasi-fractal structure when it is lined to a fractal. The result shows that when the dielectric distribution is lined, the photonic band structure will be compressed on the whole and the ground photonic band gap (PBG) closed while the next PBGs shrunk, in conjunction with their position declining in the frequency spectrum. Furthermore, the PBGs in the high zone are much more sensitive than those in low zones.

Abstract:The band gaps of elastic wave in two-dimensional phononic crystals with criss-crossed elliptical holes and the tunability of band gaps induced by the artificially introduced inclusions were analyzed through finite element method and experimental method. When the in-plane excitation is uniformly applied along the thickness of a thin phononic crystal plate, the dynamic response of the plate can be approximated as a plane-stress problem. Thin phononic plates with elliptical holes arrayed in a criss-cross pattern were analyzed with a two-dimensional finite element model based on the contrarian thinking in order to calculate the wave transmission along the ΓX direction of the reciprocal lattice. The effects of the ratio of major axis to minor axis, the porosity of holes, and the artificially introduced line defects on the band gaps and the wave propagation characteristics were systematically analyzed. The testing samples with the same dimensions as the numerical models were produced to conduct the transmission experiments. The numerical results accorded well with the experimental results. Results show that the width of band gap enlarges with the increasing of the ratio of major axis to minor axis, and the band gap can be reversely controlled by the insertion of line defects.
