Abstract:Objective:The feasibility, toxicity and clinical effectiveness was assessed in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma treated by conventional radiotherapy with nicotinamide. Methods: From September 1999 to August 2000, twenty patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma were treated by conventional radiotherapy with nicotinamide. All patients orally received 50 mg/kg/fraction of the drug. Results:In all patients, two failed to complete treatment. The most common side-effects were nausea and vomiting, oral mucosa and skin acute reaction, their appearance of III grade reaction were 4(20% ) , 8(40% ) and 4(20% ) patients, respectively. Two patients had mild marrow suppression and no patients had liver, kidney and heart toxicity. Primary tumor was complete response in 17 patients. The local control rate, free from distant metastasis rate and actuarial survival rate at 2-year were 94. 7% ,95% and 95%. Conclusion: Conventional radiotherapy with nicotinamide is feasible in patients with nasopharyngael carcinoma. The preliminary clinical effectiveness is satisfied.
