Abstract:To study the value of irradiation combined with late course chemotherapy in advanced nasopharyngea carcinoma (NPC), 130 primary cases with NPC, confirmed by pathology, were randomly divided into study group and control group from June 1997 to April 2000. Study group had 85 cases with irradiation combined with late course chemotherapy, and control group had 45 cases with irradiation alone. Then the results between the groups were analyzed. Local control rates of 1 and 3 years were 97.6% (83/85) and 89.4% (76/85) in study group, more than those in control group (88.9% (40/45) and 75.6%(34/45)), and there were significant difference (P0.05). Survival rates of 1 and 3 years were 98.8%(84/85) and 70. 6%(60/85) in study group, better than those in control group (95.6%(43/45) and 62.2%(28/45)), but there was no statistic difference (P0.05). The main acute side effects included leukocytopenia, nausea, vomitting and mucitis of oral cavity in both groups. The incidence of over Ⅲ grade of mucitis in study group was more than that in control group, but there was no statistic difference (P0.05). The preparatory result indicated that irradiation combined with late course chemotherapy in NPC may improve local control rate and it may have the potential plus. Its influence on long-term survival needs further follow-up.
