Abstract:To combat the crisis of today’s synthetic polymers arising from unsustainable production and disposal, it is essential for the synthetic polymer community to reshape the current polymer industry with sustainable polymers. As an emerging class of sustainable polymers, the development of chemically depolymerizable polymers (CDPs), which can undergo closed-loop depolymerization/repolymerization cycles to reproduce virgin polymers without the loss of properties from recovered monomers, offers an ideal solution to preserve finite natural resources, provides a feasible solution to the end-of-life issue of polymer waste, and thereby establishes a circular materials economy. However, two grand key challenges have been encountered in the establishment of practically useful CDPs: how to balance polymerization and depolymerization ability and how to unify conflicted depolymerizability and physical properties. Accordingly, this critical review article presents our vision for summarizing feasible strategies to overcome the above two significant challenges and the design principles for constructing an ideal CDP by highlighting selected major progress made in this rapidly expanding field.

Abstract:Dynamic covalent polymer networks have long been recognized. With the initial focus on the unintended impact of dynamic covalent linkages on the viscoelasticity of commercial rubbers, efforts in modern times have transitioned into designing dynamic covalent polymer networks with unique adaptive properties. Whereas self‐healing and thermoset reprocessing have been the primary motivations for studying dynamic covalent polymer networks, the recent discovery of the vitrimeric rheological behavior and solid‐state plasticity for this type of material have opened up new opportunities in material innovations. This, coupled with the revelation of the dynamic characteristics of commercially relevant polymer building blocks such as esters and urethanes, suggests a promising future for this class of materials.

Abstract:In the past two decades, dynamic covalent chemistry has been greatly developed, which is mainly reflected in two aspects: 1. new dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs) are continuously discovered; 2. various DCBs have been introduced into polymer materials for different functions. These functional polymer materials have brought new opportunities for sustainable development. In this review, we provide an overview of various functions endowed by DCBs in polymer materials, including self-healing, chemical recycling, and shape controlling. Particularly, we pay much attention to the three-dimensional (3D) shape reconfiguration/programming, surface patterning, and reversible actuation. In addition, we also give the current issues, challenges, and opportunities on DCBs-containing materials and point out its developing directions in the future.

Abstract:Three‐dimensional (3D) printing has received extensive attention due to its unique multidimensional functionality and customizability and has been recognized as one of the most revolutionary manufacturing technologies. Functional 3D printed products represent an important orientation for next‐generation manufacturing and attract a great spotlight for the application in sensors, actuators, robots, electronics, and medical devices. However, the lack of functions of printing polymeric materials dramatically limits the development of functional 3D printing. Different from traditional processing, the physical properties, such as geometry and rheological behavior, of the polymeric materials must match the printing process, making the selection of printable materials limited. More importantly, challenges in large‐scale production of such materials further stifle the development of functional 3D printing industry. In this review, we aim to outline recent advances in polymeric materials and methodologies for the functional 3D printing technology. The reports are classified based on functionalities, including electronic conductive, thermally conductive, electromagnetic interference shielding, energy storage, and energy harvesting materials. This study attempts to provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities for 3D printing functional polymeric materials/devices, also seeks to enlighten the orientation of future research in this field.

Abstract:As an organic optical fiber with a diameter comparable to or less than the wavelength of light, polymer nanofibers have been attracting increasing attention as a platform for manipulating light at the nanoscale. A variety of applications for polymer optical nanofibers, including waveguides, light sources and sensors, have been reported in recent years. In this article, the recent progress in the field of polymer optical nanofibers is reviewed in terms of their fabrication, characterization and applications. In particular, we focus on functionalized polymer nanofibers doped with functional materials, such as dye molecules, noble metal nanoparticles, quantum dots and rare earth ions, which greatly expand their capabilities of generating, propagating, converting and modulating light at the nanoscale.

Abstract:As an irreplaceable material,polymer has been widely used in all aspects of our life.With the joint efforts of researchers,significant achievements have been accomplished in supramolecular polymer,graphene,high-performance materials and nanomultifunctional materials of polymer science.This paper makes a brief introduction to several outstanding results accomplished in 2017,including stretchable polymer semiconductor,flexible energy storage materials,efficient and accurate preparation of asymmetric polymer brushes,carbon dioxide adsorption,plastic recycling and reuse,and application of polymers in drug detection.Among them the research in extensible polymer,in particular,has made great breakthroughs in the year and seems soon applicable to use in wearable electronic equipment.

Abstract:Dynamic covalent polymer networks (DCPN) have historically attracted attention for their unique roles in chemical recycling and self-healing, which are both relevant for sustainable societal development. Efforts in these directions have intensified in the past decade with notable progress in newly discovered dynamic covalent chemistry, fundamental material concepts, and extension toward emerging applications including energy and electronic devices. Beyond that, the values of DCPN in discovering/designing functional properties not offered by classical thermoplastic and thermoset polymers have recently gained traction. In particular, the dynamic bond exchangeability of DCPN has shown unparalleled design versatility in various areas including shape-shifting materials/devices, artificial muscles, and microfabrication. Going beyond this basic bond exchangeability, various molecular mechanisms to manipulate network topologies (topological transformation) have led to opportunities to program polymers, with notable concepts such as living networks and topological isomerization. In this review, we provide an overview of the above progress with particular focuses on molecular design strategies for the exploitation of functional material properties. Based on this, we point out the remaining issues and offer perspectives on how this class of materials can shape the future in ways that are complementary with classical thermoplastic and thermoset polymers.

Abstract:Academic research regarding polymeric materials has been of great interest. Likewise, polymer industries are considered as the most familiar petrochemical industries. Despite the valuable and continuous advancements in various polymeric material technologies over the last century, many varieties and advances related to the field of polymer science and engineering still promise a great potential for exciting new applications. Research, development, and industrial support have been the key factors behind the great progress in the field of polymer applications. This work provides insight into the recent energy applications of polymers, including energy storage and production. The study of polymeric materials in the field of enhanced oil recovery and water treatment technologies will be presented and evaluated. In addition, in this review, we wish to emphasize the great importance of various functional polymers as effective adsorbents of organic pollutants from industrial wastewater. Furthermore, recent advances in biomedical applications are reviewed and discussed.

Abstract:<p>In recent years, tremendous efforts have been dedicated to developing wood‐derived functional polymeric materials due to their distinctive properties, including environmental friendliness, renewability, and biodegradability. Thus, the uniqueness of the main components in wood (cellulose and lignin) has attracted enormous interest for both fundamental research and practical applications. Herein, the emerging field of wood‐derived functional polymeric materials fabricated by means of macromolecular engineering is reviewed, covering the basic structures and properties of the main components, the design principle to utilize these main components, and the resulting wood‐derived functional polymeric materials in terms of elastomers, hydrogels, aerogels, and nanoparticles. In detail, the natural features of wood components and their significant roles in the fabrication of materials are emphasized. Furthermore, the utilization of controlled/living polymerization, click chemistry, dynamic bonds chemistry, etc., for the modification is specifically discussed from the perspective of molecular design, together with their sequential assembly into different morphologies. The functionalities of wood‐derived polymeric materials are mainly focused on self‐healing and shape‐memory abilities, adsorption, conduction, etc. Finally, the main challenges of wood‐derived functional polymeric materials fabricated by macromolecular engineering are presented, as well as the potential solutions or directions to develop green and scalable wood‐derived functional polymeric materials.</p>

Abstract:In the realm of biological macromolecules, entities such as nucleic acids and proteins are distinguished by their homochirality, consistently defined chain lengths, and integral sequence‐dependent functionalities. Historically, these refined attributes have eluded traditional synthetic polymers, which often exhibit wide variabilities in chain lengths, limited batch‐to‐batch reproducibility, and stochastic monomer arrangements. Bridging this divide represents a pivotal challenge within the domain of polymer science—a challenge that the burgeoning discipline of precision polymer chemistry is poised to address. Recent advancements have yielded precision polymers that boast prescribed monomer sequences and narrow molecular weight distributions, heralding a new era for developing model systems to decipher structure‐property correlations within functional polymers, analogous to those within biological matrices. This review discusses the innovative liquid‐phase and solid‐phase synthesis techniques for creating precision polymers and the advanced characterization tools essential for dissecting their structure and properties. We highlight potential applications in self‐assembly, catalysis, data storage, imaging, and therapy, and provide insights into the future challenges and directions of precision polymers.

Abstract:As a new generation of green media and functional materials, ionic liquids (ILs) have been extensively investigated in scientific and industrial communities, which have found numerous ap-plications in polymeric materials. On the one hand, much of the research has determined that ILs can be applied to modify polymers which use nanofillers such as carbon black, silica, graphene oxide, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, etc., toward the fabrication of high-performance polymer composites. On the other hand, ILs were extensively reported to be utilized to fabricate polymeric materials with improved thermal stability, thermal and electrical conductivity, etc. Despite substantial progress in these areas, summary and discussion of state-of-the-art functionalities and underlying mechanisms of ILs are still inadequate. In this review, a comprehensive introduction of various fillers modified by ILs precedes a systematic summary of the multifunctional applications of ILs in polymeric materials, emphasizing the effect on vulcanization, thermal stability, electrical and thermal conductivity, selective permeability, electromagnetic shielding, piezoresistive sensitivity and electrochemical activity. Overall, this review in this area is intended to provide a fundamental understanding of ILs within a polymer context based on advantages and disadvantages, to help researchers expand ideas on the promising applications of ILs in polymer fabrication with enormous potential.

Abstract:In the 100 years since the birth of modern polymer science, polymer chemistry, polymer physics and polymer processing have developed rapidly and formed a more complete body of discipline. As an important part of polymer physics, polymer crystallography focuses on the microscopic crystallization process and reveals the unique behavior of polymer chains. Polymer crystals can be divided into single crystals and polycrystals according to the number of nuclei in an independence structure. Among them, polymer single crystals have closely arranged molecular chains and exhibit perfect geometrical symmetry in macroscopic morphology, with excellent mechanical and optoelectronic properties. However, due to the complexity of molecular chain movement, the formation of polymer single crystals is still very difficult. For decades, a large number of scientists have devoted themselves to the study of polymer single crystals and obtained abundant results. In this paper, we focus on the history and progress of polymer single crystal research, and carefully discuss the crystallization strategies of polymer single crystals and their functionalization applications, hoping to provide effective help to relevant researchers.

Abstract:The current goal in functional polymeric material research is the preparation of polymers with high-fidelity nanoscale self-assembled structures and advanced functionality. Thus, recent research efforts have focused on linking chemistry for the development of tailor-made polymers with desired properties. The design of α- or ω-functionalized telechelic polymers with strongly associative interactions is connected to their unique supramolecular self-assembly behavior in homopolymers and blends. In addition, the end-group modification of block copolymers has shown to alter the polymer morphology radically, resulting in unprecedented property changes arising from confinement effects. This is fascinating because the content of terminal moieties is small compared to that of macromolecular polymer backbones. As an emerging theme in polymer designs and end-group chemistry, the controlled synthesis of polymers with complex architectures and functional linkages has been performed extensively in the past few decades. However, the effects of this linkage on the resultant polymer properties remain elusive and thus will be an important research topic in polymer science in the near future.

Abstract:A polymer nanofiber and its functional materials, preparation method and use thereof are provided. The polymer nanofiber is composed of core and shell which surrounds the core, or only comprises shell, the polymer nanofiber is synthesized by polymerization of monomer in the presence of initiator and solvent, and this preparation method may extensively reduce costs and be easy to carry out batch production of polymer nanotubes and core-shell nanowires. The polymer nanofiber has potential applications in organic solvent adsorption, high performance ion exchange, functional template, etc.
