Abstract:Patterned polymer thin films are essential components in many devices and applications owing to the multi-functionality, flexibility, lightweight and cost-efficiency. Unfortunately, conventional photolithography needs the use of developers and strippers which contain solvents and reagents that may dissolve, swell or degrade the polymer thin film substrates. Alternatively, non-photolithographic strategies provide alternative options and avoid the complicated optical systems, offering versatile routes for fabricating polymeric micro- and nanostructures. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in non-photolithographic patterning methods including soft lithography, nanoimprint lithography, direct writing, self-assembly of block copolymers, area-selective vapor phase deposition and instability induced patterning. These patterning approaches have been applied to various applications such as chromic devices, polymer light-emitting diodes, sensors, transistors, and protein and cellular engineering and many other scenarios. Finally, the subsisting challenges and future research directions of non-photolithographic patterning approaches are highlighted from the aspect of resolution, reliability and scalability.

Abstract:Chemical product engineering represents an emerging discipline rooted to chemical engineering. Its core content of research lies in precision production of chemical structures. Polymer products contain complex structures at multiple scales. Polymerization processes, to a large extent, determine polymer chain microstructures and morphologies. In the recent years, we developed various polymerization processes and produced polymers having precisely designed chain microstructures. These polymer products showed high performances and superior material properties in targeted applications. Our methodology employs kinetic modeling combined with reactor technologies, based on extensive mechanistic research on polymerization mechanisms. In controlled/living radical(co)polymeri-zation, we developed a novel model-based computer-programed semi-batch copolymerization technology that allows unprecedented precise control over end-to-end copolymer composition of individual chains. In catalytic polymerization of olefins, we developed a reactor technology for in-situ production of polyolefin alloys. This paper provides a brief summary of the recent advances in the polymer product engineering researches.

Abstract:A broad range of scientific and technological problems involves multi-scales and complex systems. This paper reviews some of unique and interesting nano-scale phenomena and applications relevant to polymer processing. It addresses four subjects. The first one is concerned with the dynamics of polymer chains in confined geometries. In contrary to intuition one may have, polymer chains may diffuse much faster in confined geometries than in the bulk. The second subject deals with extruder processing of polymer nanocomposites. Understanding of the dynamics of polymer chains in confined geometries helps shade light on how nanoparticles may be dispersed in polymer matrices in a nanometer scale. The third one is on the use of nano-objects as nano-reactors. An example is given to show how one may take the advantage of nano-reactors to improve reaction yield and/or reaction selectivity. The last subject deals with reaction kinetics at polymer–polymer interfaces of a few nanometers in thickness, a very important issue in reactive polymer blending processes.

Abstract:Polymer functional micro devices are widely applied in many important fields,which need polymer based micro /nano composites with high performances and multi-functions to realize their micro injection molding processing. This is a rapidly developing frontier of modern science and technology. This paper briefly summarized our research work on preparation and micro injection molding processing of a series of polymer functional micro /nano composites: the organic /inorganic hybrid,solid state shear milling,molecular complexation and melt compounding were utilized to prepare the polymer functional micro /nano composite with high performance and multi-functions suitable for micro processing,e. g. nylon 11( PA11) /barium titanate( BT) piezoelectric micro/nanocomposite,polyvinyl alcohol( PVA) /hydroxyapatite( HA) biomedical nanocomposite and thermoplastic polyurethane( TPU) /carbon nanotubes( CNTs) conductive composites. We have basically solved the problems such as the difficulty of dispersion of micro /nano fillers,processing difficulty of composite system,etc. By adopting technologies above,the micro injection molding of the polymer micro /nano composite was successfully realized. The replication and filling behavior were investigated. The structure and property of the polymer microparts were accordingly controlled and optimized. These provided new materials,new technologies and new theories for preparation of polymer microparts with high performance and multi-functions.

Abstract:Microreactor is a frontier and hot topic in the research of chemical engineering. It is an important platform of polymer synthesis in the development of new equipment, new technology, and new product, drawing attentions from academia and industry. Microreactors make possible well-controlled multi-phase flow, intensified mixing and mass/heat transport process, strictly-controlled reaction time, and modularized configuration in polymerization reactions. Comparing with the common batch reactors, some advantages of microreactors are producing polymeric materials with narrow molecular weight distribution, adjustable molecular architecture, or controlled macroscopic structure. In this review, the theoretical and technological advances in polymer synthesis using microreactors are introduced. Some further research issues are also discussed, including developing new polymerization process and new polymer product, measuring reaction kinetics, exploring chemical engineering fundamentals at micrometer scale, and scaling up the microreactor.

Abstract:<p>Additive manufacturing (AM) is the process of printing 3D objects in a layer‐by‐layer manner. Polymers and their composites are some of the most widely used materials in modern industries and are of great interest in the field of AM due to their vast potential for various applications, especially in the medical, aerospace, and automotive industries. Many studies have been conducted to develop new polymer materials for AM techniques, which include vat photopolymerization, material jetting, powder bed fusion, material extrusion, binder jetting, and sheet lamination. Although several reviews on the development of polymer materials for AM have been published, most of them only focus on a specific application, process, or type of material. Therefore, this article serves to provide a comprehensive review on the progress in polymer material development for AM techniques. It begins with an introduction to different AM techniques, followed by highlighting the progress of their development. Material requirements, notable advances in newly developed materials and their potential applications are discussed in detail and summarized. This review concludes by identifying the major challenges currently encountered in using AM for polymer materials and providing insights into the valuable opportunities it presents, in hopes of spurring further development in this field.</p>

This paper summarizes the progress in polymer processing and concludes that the emergence of numerous polymer processing technologies has benefited from nature and other material industries, such as solution spinning from spider silk, blow molding from glass blowing, and calendaring as well as solid. phase drawing forming from metal forging. Moreover, to deal with the big challenge of creating high. performance stereocomplexed polylactide (SC-PLA) products from melt. processed poly(L-lactide)/poly(D. lactide) (PLLA/PDLA) blends because of the poor melt stability of stereocomplex (SC) crystallites after complete melting as well as the serious degradation of PLA chains at elevated melt. processing temperatures, we report a new strategy to prepare highly transparent SC. PLA products with excellent heat resistance, mechanical strength, and hydrolytic stability by means of a low. temperature (i.e., below the melting temperature of the SC crystallites) powder sintering technology inspired by the concept of powder metallurgy.

Abstract:Nanoscale functionalization for polymers is crucial to further understand essential correlation between polymer chain structure and macroscopic properties, which direct influence capability and trend to functionalize polymer materials. It is urgently required to further investigate physics and chemistry of the micro-process. Since 2000, we have been focused on polymer composites micro-processing and physics and chemistry therein. Two representative macroscopic morphologies are mainly concerned ： complex composite particles and nanoporous composite membrane. We have developed new template synthesis approaches to precisely control their macroscopic morphologies, meanwhile to assist a favorable growth and spatial distribution of desired components with soft matter （polymer gels or block copolymers） by specific interactions. The physics and chemistry during the micro-process has been elucidated.

Abstract:This review explores significant advancements in polymer science and fabrication processes that have enhanced the performance and broadened the application scope of microfluidic devices. Microfluidics, essential in biotechnology, medicine, and chemical engineering, relies on precise fluid manipulation in micrometer-sized channels. Recent innovations in polymer materials, such as flexible, biocompatible, and structurally robust polymers, have been pivotal in developing advanced microfluidic systems. Techniques like replica molding, microcontact printing, solvent-assisted molding, injection molding, and 3D printing are examined, highlighting their advantages and recent developments. Additionally, the review discusses the diverse applications of polymer-based microfluidic devices in biomedical diagnostics, drug delivery, organ-on-chip models, environmental monitoring, and industrial processes. This paper also addresses future challenges, including enhancing chemical resistance, achieving multifunctionality, ensuring biocompatibility, and scaling up production. By overcoming these challenges, the potential for widespread adoption and impactful use of polymer-based microfluidic technologies can be realized.

Abstract:Artificial molecular machine is one of the most brilliant areas in the last half a century. They represent people's control abilities to the microscopic molecules in solution. Beside the hard works in the proof-of-concept research on the exploration of fundamental principles, the wide hybrid of them with diverse materials was confirmed. Through the coupling of these movable molecules with various materials, the microscopic motion of molecular machines could be easily translated and amplified to macroscopic world to produce useful work. The integration further improves the ability of us to control the molecules in solid state. Among the various materials, polymers have the widest applications in many areas. The incorporation of artificial molecular machines into the bulk polymer materials would produce more influence on our life in the near future. In this review, we summarized the proofed hybrid strategies of polymers with different molecular machines. We hope that the summarization could provide a research roadmap for the related researchers. Abstract:Polymer materials exhibit unique properties in the fabrication of optical waveguide devices, electromagnetic devices, and bio-devices. Direct laser writing (DLW) technology is widely used for micro-structure fabrication due to its high processing precision, low cost, and no need for mask exposure. This paper reviews the latest research progresses of polymer-based micro/nano-devices fabricated using the DLW technique as well as their applications. In order to realize various device structures and functions, different manufacture parameters of DLW systems are adopted, which are also investigated in this work. The flexible use of the DLW process in various polymer-based microstructures, including optical, electronic, magnetic, and biomedical devices are reviewed together with their applications. In addition, polymer materials which are developed with unique properties for the use of DLW technology are also discussed.

Abstract:The development of a flexible and efficient strategy to precisely fabricate polymer patterns is increasingly significant for many research areas, especially for cell biology, pharmaceutical science, tissue engineering, soft photonics, and bioelectronics. Recent advances of patterning natural polymers using various nanofabrication techniques, including photolithography, electron-beam lithography, dip-pen nanolithography, inkjet printing, soft lithography, and nanoimprint lithography are discussed here. Integrating nanofabrication techniques with naturally derived macromolecules provides a feasible route for transforming these polymer materials into versatile and sophisticated devices while maintaining their intrinsic and excellent properties. Furthermore, the corresponding applications of these natural polymer patterns generated by the above techniques are elaborated. In the end, a summary of this promising research field is offered and an outlook for the future is given. It is expected that advances in precise spatial patterns of natural polymers would provide new avenues for various applications, such as tissue engineering, flexible electronics, biomedical diagnosis, and soft photonics.

Abstract:Possessing superior properties such as light weight, low cost, and good biocompatibility, the polymeric materials have become more and more important in fabricating micro/nano components for a broad range of applications. This entry selectively describes some key aspects relating to polymeric microcomponents for biomedical applications. Specifically, starting with some basic conceptions, the biomedical-purposed polymeric materials and microcomponent fabrication technologies including photo defining and mold defining as well as ultra-precision machining techniques are introduced. Furthermore, a case study on a micromixer in terms of its manufacturing process and mixing performance testing is presented. Finally, the main conclusions are given before the future direction of the polymeric microcomponents is pointed out.

Abstract:The continuous development of plasticizing conveying methods and devices has been carried out to meet the needs of the polymer processing industry. As compared to the conventional shear-flow-dominated plasticizing and conveying techniques, a new method for processing polymers based on elongational flow was proposed. This new method and the related devices such as vane extruders, eccentric rotor extruders and so on, exhibited multiple advantages including shorter processing time, higher mixing effectiveness, improved product performance and better adaptability to various material systems. The development of new techniques in the field of polymer material processing has opened up a broad space for the development of new plastic products, improved product performance and reduced processing costs. In this review, recent advances concerning the processing techniques based on elongational flow are summarized, and the broad applications in polymer processing as well as some future opportunities and challenges in this vibrant area are elucidated in detail.
