Abstract:There are two kinds of auto-focus methods in a digital imaging system: Depth from focus (DFF) and Depth from defocus (DFD). Depth from defocus is a method, which acquired distance information from blurred image. Because of necessity of establishment of defocus model and accurate calibration of imaging system, the application of DFD is confined. As a search focusing technology, Depth from focus has some advantages, such as high accuracy, robust performance, so it is adopted in our apparatus. In this paper, an auto-focus apparatus based on digital signal processor has been designed and constructed. DSP receives image series from a CMOS sensor firstly, then performs the auto-focus action with the following steps: analyzing focus measure of image, moving motorized lens and finding the best imaging position. For focus measures, the frequency spectrum functions, the gradient functions and the entropy function are analyzed in detail. In order to improve the sensitivity of focus measure curve, the weighting factor - distance between direct current component and alternating current component - was introduced into revising frequency spectrum functions. A series of focus experiments have been performed on the auto-focus apparatus, and the veracity and the reliability of the system have been proved to be excellent.

Abstract:We propose a quasi-confocal microscopy autofocus system incorporating an electrically tunable lens (ETL) to achieve differential detection. The ETL changes its focal length to collect differential curves at speeds <300 Hz, allowing selective locking onto desired focal layers and high-speed differential operations close to the locked focal plane. By segmenting the system's pupil, the interference between the outgoing and incoming near-infrared beams is avoided, thereby greatly improving the signal-to-noise ratio. This ultra-sensitive system, with a focus drift accuracy better than 1/22 focal depth (∼20 nm @100× objective), provides a new, to the best of our knowledge, implementation pathway to meet the requirements of various microscopy techniques.

Abstract:An autofocus system applied to microscope has been designed, which is based on the analysis of analog video signals' processing. A multi-feedback band-pass active filter retains high frequency components of analog video signals from CCD, then high frequency components that represent image details information are amplified and performed integral operation, which is defined as focusing measure. After A/D transformation a MCU controls the focusing procedure and drives a stepping motor to find focused-position. The selection of bandwidths of filter, selection of focusing windows, step-size in search and hill climbing algorithms are discussed and optimized to improve focus accuracy and shorten focus time.

Abstract:Erroneous object distance often causes significant errors in vision-based measurement. In this paper, we propose to apply autofocus to control object distance in order to enhance the measurement accuracy of a machine vision system for robotic drilling. First, the influence of the variation of object distance on the measurement accuracy of the vision system is theoretically analyzed. Then, a Two Dimensional Entropy Sharpness (TDES) function is proposed for autofocus after a brief introduction to various traditional sharpness functions. Performance indices of sharpness functions including reproducibility and computation efficiency are also presented. A coarse-to-fine autofocus algorithm is developed to shorten the time cost of autofocus without sacrificing its reproducibility. Finally, six major sharpness functions (including the TDES) are compared with experiments, which indicate that the proposed TDES function surpasses other sharpness functions in terms of reproducibility and computational efficiency. Experiments performed on the machine vision system for robotic drilling verify that object distance control is accurate and efficient using the proposed TDES function and coarse-to-fine autofocus algorithm. With the object distance control, the measurement accuracy related to object distance is improved by about 87 %.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that the focus range and focus accuracy cannot be balanced during the focusing process of scenes with small targets in a large field of view such as ships in the ocean, this paper proposes a selection of the focusing window based on gradient matrix and an adjustable coverage range autofocus evaluation function in frequency domain. By using gradient operators of different sizes for different search intervals, the gradient matrix of the image can be obtained. This kind of strategy takes both accuracy and detection rate into consideration. Through segmentation, area with rich details could be chosen as the focusing window. In order to solve the problem that the focusing evaluation function don't works well when the amount of defocus blur is large, this paper proposes a new evaluation function based on an amplitude summation of different frequency component with variable threshold. For the scenes with small target in a large filed of view, more than 100 pictures with continuously changing defocus were established. Experiments indicate that the method proposed in this paper can meet the characteristics of a wide focusing range and high sensitivity at the same time when variable threshold was used. Compared with existing methods, the method above performs better in noise robustness and has a larger coverage range, at the same time, it provides a sharper peak of evaluation function which means higher sensitivity.

Abstract:A new location method of focused position for autofocus was put forward.In current autofocus system,a lot of time was taken to acquire and process a serial of images and drive focus lens through all possible imaging positions,which is not compatible with the demand of rapid focus.The new method estimated defocus degree at three imaging position respectively,driven lens to focused range,then searched within the range and found best imaging position.Proposed method has some advantages,such as higher accuracy,shorter focus time,and neednt calibrate exactly imaging system.Experiments show that the new method has improved focus speed remarkably (about 37%),and has the same accuracy as depth from focus(DFF) method.

Abstract:In this paper, an auto-focusing system based on image processing is introduced to realize auto-focusing. Image processing method like Differential coefficient, maximum variance is involved in the system to pick up the information of the edges, and the statistical rules of the information under different focusing states are used to control the focus to obtain the best focusing state. The system can automatically read the distance information of the worktable and drive the pacing motor to reach the aim of auto-focusing. This auto-focusing system is loaded on the original CCD-based microscopic measuring system and the practical measuring example is given, and it is pointed out that the way mentioned before of heightening the precision is available. It is pointed out that the higher resolution, higher precision image collection board, the CCD camera with higher resolution and the higher precision pacing motor will make the auto-focusing and the measurement of the system more accurate. It can be practical applied and the further perfection of algorithm and software will result in the system having more functions.
Micro-assembly auto-focusing system based on image processing

Abstract:Based on the image processing technology, an auto-focusing system consisted of optical microscope, CCD, moment motor and drive gear etc, was presented. In combination of coarse with fine adjustment method, this system applied Krisch-image edge gradient operator to evaluate the entire microscopic image of the micro-object for its coarse focus position, the system also used the sharpness function based on high frequency component to evaluate the certain domain of the microscopic image for fine adjustment. The sharpness functions used in the experiment were programmed with Visual C++, and the experimental results show that the position accuracy of auto-focusing system is less than ±4.8 μm, which satisfies the focusing requirement of the micro-assembly.

Abstract:An optical recording static tester with high performance but low cost based on a commercial optical disk drive is introduced. Its schematic diagram and optical system are described. A quasi-linear-region focusing search method is proposed and carried out. It is a simple reliable focusing search method based on the positive and negative feedback characteristics of the focusing error curve.

Abstract:High efficiency and precision of the pot center detection are the foundations of avionics instrument navigation and optics measurement basis for many applications. It has noticeable impact on overall system performance. Among them, laser spot detection is very important in the optical measurement technology. In order to improve the low accuracy of the spot center position, the algorithm is improved on the basis of the circle fitting. The pretreatment is used by circle fitting, and the improved adaptive denoising filter for TV repair technology can effectively improves the accuracy of the spot center position. At the same time, the pretreatment and de-noising can effectively reduce the influence of Gaussian white noise, which enhances the anti-jamming capability.

Abstract:An autofocusing system used for a laser burst-cutting-area (BCA) marking system for a DIVX production line has been developed. The principle of focus error detection is based on a method that takes advantage of the focusing properties of simple optical elements. A differential detection method is used to achieve high resolution, and a position servo is designed to accomplish the autofocusing. Some design considerations, system modeling, simulation, and experiments are described. Experimental results are presented to show the feasibility of this system. Abstract:In order to meet the requirement of focusing in the multi-wavelength mastering system, a pneumatic sensing system is designed. It detects the objective lens position signals and sends to the focus control system as the focus error signals instead of the feedback signals of light intensity used traditionally. So it can solve the auto-focus problem caused by introducing multi-wavelength lasers. The static and frequency response characteristics of the system are tested. It is proved by the experiment that the focus error is under +/- 0.1 mu m and can meet the needs of the three-wavelength system.

Abstract:A technique is developed for microscope autofocusing, which is called the eccentric light beam approach with high resolution, wide focusing range, and compact construction. The principle is described. The theoretical formula of the eccentric light beam approach deduced can be applied not only to an object lens whose objective plane is just at the focal plane, but also to an object lens whose objective plane is not at the focal plane. The experimental setup uses a semiconductor laser device as the light source. The laser beam that enters into the microscope is eccentric with the main light axis. A defocused signal is acquired by a symmetrical silicon photocell for the change of the reflected light position caused by differential amplification and processed by a microprocessor. Then the electric signal is power-amplified and drives a dc motor, which moves a fine working platform to an automatic focus of the microscope. The result of the experiments shows a ±0.1-μm precision of autofocusing for a range of ±500-μm defocusing. The system has high reliability and can meet the requirements of various accurate micro measurement systems. © 2002 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Abstract:In this paper, an auto-focusing system based on Signal Processing of Single-chip Microprocessor is introduced to realize auto-focusing. The system can automatically get the distance information of the worktable and drive the step motor to reach the aim of auto-focusing. The auto-focusing system is loaded in the original CMOS-based measuring system. After the AV signals from CMOS image sensor pass through the analog filter, the single-chip microprocessor samples and processes them, then controls the lens to be in focus. As a result, this method can not only achieve all functions of focusing, but also avoid complicated calculations. The system is low power consuming, programming rapidly. Here we analyse the key technique of the system and the results of the experiments are given. It can be practical applied and the further perfection of algorithm and software will result in the system having more function.

Abstract:In order to improve the accuracy and efficiency of fabricating lines with laser pattern generator, a novel focusing system was designed. Focusing system is based on optical off-axis detection principle. The detector is a two-quadrant photocell and the defocus signal is constructed by division. Focusing system has the character of second-order system with overdamp. The new embedded PID controller improves the performance of focusing system and upgrades the closed-loop precision to 0.2 mu m. Furthermore focusing system has the fabrication capabilities for alterable-width lines under various defocus amount.

Abstract:A microscope auto-focusing system using the self-adaptive mountain-climbing search (SAMCS) method is introduced based on personal computer (PC) control. It mainly consists of four parts: the microscope, the digital camera to get the video images, the mechanical part of step motor and the computer to control the focusing process. The precision of the auto-focusing system is to some extent improved through high-resolution color images acquired by the digital camera as well as hi,h subdivision of the step motor drive. An improved searching method - the SAMCS method is presented here. It can effectively improve the searching efficiency while guaranteeing the precision of the auto-focusing system. Based on the normal mountain-climbing search (MCS) algorithm, the SAMCS method takes full consideration of omnidistance concept and local extreme point influences. Thereby it can adaptively adjust the searching range according to different environmental conditions, and has quite good robustness. This feature mainly has two advantages. First, this method is much more exact than the normal mountain-climbing, which can not avoid local fluctuations. Second, it is much faster than the method of only using omnidistance searching to avoid local fluctuations. At the same time, we also take evaluation function and region selection into consideration to reach a faster and more accurate focusing result. And the experimental result demonstrates a good efficiency and accuracy.

Abstract:This study designs and accomplishes a high precision and robust laser-based autofocusing system, in which a biased image plane is applied. In accordance to the designed optics, a cluster-based circle fitting algorithm is proposed to calculate the radius of the detecting spot from the reflected laser beam as an essential factor to obtain the defocus value. The experiment conduct on the experiment device achieved novel performance of high precision and robustness. Furthermore, the low demand of assembly accuracy makes the proposed method a low-cost and realizable solution for autofocusing technique.

Abstract:The MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) technology is a new interesting research direction which aims to manufacture and assembly of micro-systems. The research of micro assembly robot has significances of academy and commerce. In the paper the theory and related key technologies of micro-assembly robot based on computer microscope vision feedback were investigated. To enlarge the manipulation area, a novel method of microscope focusing automatically was studied. The focusing process was carried out in cursory step and accurate one. The coarse focusing was based on the image gray histogram while the accurate one compared the width of image edges. Theory analysis and experiments showed that this algorithm enlarged the microscope focusing depth, with the advantages of simplicity and good real time performance.

Abstract:A digital camera with high frame frequency and high resolution is used for improving the precision of tracking little target.Using a hardware framework including DSP and FPGA and mass buffer storage,the resource of the system is flexibly assigned through the logic programming of FPGA.The image sampling,pretreatment,tracking and displaying function are reasonable distributed to each hardware unit.The effect of each function unit is anticipated through experiment testing. The tracking system based on the interface of Camera Link,which is introduced in this paper has high resolution and high precision of tracking.

Abstract:Linear region automatic-search beforehand is an importantfunction of focusing servo system for various kinds of optical disk system .A concrete description of the automatic search mechanism in quasi-linear-region for optical disk focusing is proposed in the paper on the basis of analyzing of the existing automatic search method beforehand in linear region. The method fully applies the positive and negative feedback characteristics of the error signal curves in optical disk focusing ,so it is a simple, stable and reliable automatic search method.
