Abstract:Sensory image schema is a kind of unique image schema abstracted from human sensory experience and related life experience stored in the brain. Synaesthesia is a language phenomenon formed by projecting the sensory image schema of a certain sensory domain onto other sensory experiences. Based on the image schema theory of cognitive linguistics, the sensory image schema can be used to explain the cause and process of synaesthesia. Synaesthesia is a widespread phenomenon in Tang poetry. The appropriate treatment of this synaesthesia is closely related to the overall quality and aesthetic reproduction of the English translation of Tang poetry. Through the analysis of Tang poetry translation, there are three translation strategies of Tang poetry synaesthesia: reproduction, deletion and active addition. Reproduction, deletion and active addition are all different means for translators to achieve aesthetic reproduction.

Abstract:This paper investigates the polysemy of the Chinese character shàng上“on/over” through the lens of Lakoff’s Image Schema and Radial Categories theories. In Mandarin Chinese, spatial expressions like shàng “on/over” exhibit diverse interpretations including static senses and dynamic senses, with the former revealing the information about the position of a person or an object while the latter indicating the motion. In addition to the concrete senses, they also manifest a range of abstract senses. Considering both the static and dynamic states of the senses of the character shàng上“on/over”, this study provides an in-depth analysis over the relationships between its core meanings and extended meanings through human’s cognitive processes, including adding information to the central schema and applying metaphorical extensions. As a result, two radial structures (one for the static senses, and the other for dynamic senses of shàng“on/over”) are obtained, demonstrating that the senses that are closer to the core are more prototypical, with the spatial meanings at the center and the non-spatial meanings radiating outward to the periphery.

Abstract:Polysemy is one of the important research fields of cognitive lexical semantics, in which the linking mechanisms among the senses is considered as a very challenging one. Sense of a spatial motion verb is directly motivated by spatial image schemas. This paper adopts an approach based on spatial image schemas, extracts more than twenty distinct senses of the spatial motion verb chuan (穿), and attains a radial-structured polysemous system. It also discusses the linking mechanisms, that is, metonymy and specification, between different senses, and points out in the end the necessity and importance of the research to fine-grained polysemy.

Abstract:This study explores how people with different cultural backgrounds comprehend diverse sacred spaces all over the world, from a cross-linguistic perspective. The challenges surrounding intelligibility relate to spatial resemblance, complexity of religion, as well as many obscure proper names. With the lexicalization of relevant religious concepts, “cultural synonyms” are generated. Through surveying the vocabulary within the domain of “TEMPLE” as an exemplification, the cultural synonymy of the Chinese lexicon in demonstrating spiritual intricacy has been elucidated. Based on the theory of “multi-competence”, a reasonable hypothesis on cross-culturally understanding the sacred space is proposed: Multicompetent individuals can have other comprehensions about sacred spaces when compared with monolinguals of either the native or the target language; A monolingual or a cross-cultural experiencer without knowledge of the regional language depends on translation to apprehend the sacred space, which may result in confusion; Deficient translations may also interfere with multicompetent individuals, while their linguistic awareness allows them more chances of differentiating cultural synonyms and accordingly clarification of any misguided perceptions.

Abstract:Analysis of the Non-projective Phenomenon in Chinese Semantic Dependency Graph Lijuan Zheng, Yanqiu Shao, Erhong Yang (Institute of Applied Linguistics, Beijing Language and Culture University, Beijing 100083, China) Abstract: Chinese is kind of language with flexible word order. A lot of different sentences may express the same meaning. Projective phenomenon, based on the traditional dependency tree, cannot solve some Chinese phenomenon perfectly. This paper, based on a Chinese semantic dependency graph database with 10 thousand sentences, demonstrates and analyses the existence of non-projective phenomenon in Chinese. To give an induction and explanation in term of linguistics and deep understanding of semantics, the paper summarizes 7 situations in which the non-projective phenomenon exists, including sentences with sentences used as object, comparative sentences, sentences with sentences used as predicate, sentences with two or more events, pronouns, verb and complement phrases used as predicate and note phrases or sentences. This is important to guide the analysis of the automatic semantic dependency tagging.
A Cognitive Semantic Analysis of the Spatial Dimension Adjective "deep/shallow" from the Perspective of Lexical Typology.

Abstract:Lexical typology research starts from concepts that commonly exist in human languages. In accordance with the cross-linguistic comparisons, both the shared characteristics and distinctions of these universal categories within the lexical systems of diverse languages are revealed. From a lexical typology perspective, this paper takes the spatial dimension adjectives "deep/shallow" as a case study, exploring the diachronic semantic evolution of "shen((sic))/qian((sic))" in ancient Chinese. At the same time, the cross-linguistic comparisons of the lexicalization and semantic expansion patterns of "deep/shallow" in six languages are carried out at the synchronic level. The basic meanings and extended meanings of "deep/shallow" within these six languages are found to have a close-knit relationship. The spatial dimension adjectives "deep/shallow" exhibit the capacity to extend from the spatial domain to various other abstract domains, embodying the universality of human cognition. Being subject to the impact and constraint of national culture, the semantic expansion in these languages presents specific characteristics, shedding light on both the commonalities and distinctions in spatial perception and conceptual structures among different ethnic groups.

Abstract:The aim of this study is the creation and implementation of a groundbreaking syntactic structure typology, anchored in fundamental cognitive processes. This involves an in-depth classification and analysis of a variety of sentence types, integrating imagistic and spatial categories. This methodology promotes an in-depth comparative analysis, facilitating the discovery of distinctive syntactic features among the languages examined. The research is dedicated to a thorough exploration of sentence structure's topological aspects, scrutinizing the configuration and interplay of linguistic elements. It places particular emphasis on sentences within three diverse linguistic frameworks: Russian, Chinese, and English, thus enabling a comprehensive analysis and the identification of both cross-linguistic similarities and distinctions. This research adopts a multifaceted approach, combining theoretical analysis with comparative study. Such integration of methodologies allows for a nuanced comparison of sentence structures and their semantic roles in Russian, Chinese, and English, highlighting linguistic and cultural differences between these languages. The novelty of this study lies in the cognitive approach to sentence structure analysis and the development of a classification based on three cognitive models: (i) a single main container, (ii) dual main containers without a defined trajectory, and (iii) multiple main containers with distinct trajectories. A key principle of this classification is the integration of topological and imagery elements, underscoring the diversity of syntactic structures against a backdrop of a unified cognitive base, shaped by cultural and linguistic specifics. The findings reveal that sentences in Russian, English, and Chinese exhibit both shared and unique syntactic characteristics, reflecting cultural-cognitive differences, including the Chinese cultural concept of harmonizing opposites, the Russian cultural notion of segmenting the whole into parts, and the English cultural stance situated between these extremes.

Abstract:Cognitive linguists believe that the various senses of a polysemous word are not arbitrarily related but interrelated.They stress the close link between human body and mind,and contribute the meaning extension to people's embodied experience in the world.This paper takes the Chinese posture verb Li(stand) as a case,and first explores into the motivation effect of image schema by conducting a quantitative study,suggesting that meaning extension is based on embodied experiences.Based on this,the paper compares the extension patterns of Li and Stand and finds out image schemas have cultural differenceS,which partly results in the difference in the extension direction of certain words in different languages.

Abstract:The study investigated the evocation of mental imagery and emotional responses when English–Chinese bilinguals read classic Chinese poems and their English translations to examine (1) the target readers' formation of non-verbal text representations of Chinese poetry and (2) whether different translations affect the target readers' imagery cognition. A total of 20 English–Chinese speaker students enrolled in a Chinese university read a classic Chinese poem in Chinese and its four versions of translation in English. Through questionnaires and interviews, participants rated the visualized words used in the poems for the degree of mental imagery and emotional response evoked based on three indicators of narrative process, salience value, and emotive validity in the theoretical framework of visual grammar. Results showed considerable individual variances in the cognitive differences in forming mental imagery in all versions of the poems and there were also effects of translation strategy. Moreover, visual language information in poetry reading and its translations evoked different emotional responses depending on the use of visual words with cultural features. Our study demonstrates the applicability and accessibility of visual language in describing different readers' mental imagery and the interrelation and interaction between the poetry language system and the emotional, social, and cultural contexts involved in poetry translation.

Synergetic Properties of Lexical Structures in Chinese and English.

Abstract:The synergetic lexical model provides a unique framework for exploration of the interrelationships between the lexical properties of languages. Previous studies concerning several properties of this lexical model have yielded many successful fittings results, but very few studies have investigated synonymy, a major property of this model. The present study uses 825 Chinese and 848 English tokens retrieved from Chinese and English corpora, dictionaries, and thesaurus to conduct a contrastive study on the interrelations between four major properties of this lexical model: word length, word frequency, polysemy, and synonymy. The successful fittings of both languages demonstrate the cross-linguistic validity of the synergetic lexical model, though English belongs to the Germanic language family, while Chinese, a highly analytical language, is of the Sino-Tibetan language family. Moreover, our analysis of the parameters of the fitting results shows that, compared to English, Chinese possesses a greater resistance to shortening word length and a quicker response to semantic change.

Abstract:This paper reviews the research on diagrammatic Chinese syntactic analysis and its Treebank construction which use Sentence Component Analysis (SCA) as the main ideas, puts forward a new formal schema of diagrammatic Chinese syntactic analysis based on sentence pattern structure, including diagrammatic style and its XML structure. Syntactic schemes are drawn on the sentence pattern system according to the sequence of "basic sentence pattern, extend sentence pattern, complex sentence pattern and special sentence pattern", while lexical schemes are drawn on the Diagrammatic Unit which covers idioms/proper nouns, syntactic words and morphology.

Abstract:Synaesthetic metaphors are pervasive in everyday language as well as in literary works. They cannot be accounted for by traditional semantic theories due to the novelty of cross-modal associations. The cognitive processes of synaesthetic metaphors can only be interpreted within the framework of conceptual metaphor theory. The cognitive basis of synaesthetic metaphors is the psychological associations of similarity between different properties of modals in our conceptual system other than in the linguistic system. They consist of the mapping of properties from one modality to another. Mapping from lower modalities of sense onto higher ones is more frequently used and more natural than its inverse. Understanding of the cognitive constraint, namely, mapping from the more accessible concepts to the less accessible ones, may facilitate the readings of synaesthesia.

Abstract:Cognitive linguistics can inspire language pedagogy. As one of the core conceptions of cognitive linguistics, image schema theory can be integrated into foreign/second language teaching to facilitate learners’ acquisition of word meanings, especially those polysemous words which have long been difficult points for both learners and instructors. This research conducts a thorough review of the image schema theory and polysemy in cognitive linguistics and discusses the feasibility, and potential benefits of the teaching method based on image schema theory. Also, this research synthesizes the previous empirical studies about the effects of image schema theory on the acquisition of polysemy. It is found that the effectiveness of image-schema-based instruction has been generally recognized; however, the inconsistencies in the previous studies necessitate further exploration. Also, future studies can pay more attention to the effects of image schema theory on the acquisition of polysemous verbs.

Abstract:Antithesis is an important element in Chinese stylistic system. It is a kind of linguistic expression which describes people's cognition of the world and then saturates it into elegant culture and folk culture. Antithesis thought is a coupling one, which reflects centrally the thought of oneness and opposing uniting thought of Chinese writing. After investigating the Chinese writing history, we can find out that antithesis is not just a kind of rhetorical means in the traditional sense, but also a kind of significantly cognitive model of Chinese writing. Metaphor's research has already turned from the research of rhetorical means to the significant and central project of recognizing the world and the linguistic changes.

Abstract:Two studies explored the influence of the up-down image schema on emotion process of Chinese idioms.Experiment 1 found that "metaphor congruency effect" exists in emotion process of the Chinese idioms.Experiment 2 eliminated the influence of spatial cues,with which the links between "up" and "down" concepts and emotion were more directly and clearly at notional level.The result showed that emotion process of the Chinese idioms were not affected by "up" and "down" concepts when they were only connected at notional level.It suggests that spatial information is necessary to the "metaphor congruency effect".
Analyzing the Phenomenon of English-Chinese Intransitive Verbs with Objects

Abstract:Academics have paid close attention to intransitive verbs with objects as a unique language phenomenon. This article aims to examine the phenomenon of intransitive verbs carrying objects in Chinese from the standpoints of syntactic structure and cognitive linguistic theory. The object of intransitive verbs is categorized, as well as the syntactic structure of intransitive verbs with objects. Additionally, a comparison of English and Chinese intransitive verbs with objects is made, and the structure of intransitive verbs with objects is analyzed for rationality. The analysis of 38 international students' actual learning situations, as well as valid questionnaires and corpora, is used to determine whether second language learners from various language systems can comprehend and master the structure of "intransitive verbs with object" in Chinese despite significant language system differences. Finally, despite the impact of COVID-19 on the project survey, we discovered that students whose first language was not Chinese had varying levels of bias in their perception and acquisition of intransitive verbs with objects, owing to the negative effects of their mother tongue and different teaching methods. Most notably, the versatility of the syntactic structure of "intransitive verbs with objects" complicates learning Chinese syntax, which is already difficult in comparison to English. This leads us to believe that more study is required to further our understanding of the peculiar grammatical phenomenon known as "intransitive verbs with objects" and to apply our findings to the study of contemporary Chinese and language learning.

Abstract:The paper comments on the latest research of information structure ,especially on the study of Mary Dalrymlpe & Irina Nikolaeva(2011) .Referring to the factor of discourse ,the article thinks that there are much more complicated situation in the expressions about focus and topic of Chi‐nese objects ,and also provides some pieces of evidence to prove that there are subtopics in the location of ordinary Chinese objects .There are some important constraints on the interface between informa‐tion structure and syntactic structure of Chinese .By elementary investigation , the article supposes that there is one unmarked hierarchical pattern of salient degree of topics in Chinese .T he nominal syn‐tactic elements all have the potential function of topicality .Under the situation of unmarkedness ,the elements of higher topicality are arranged ahead ,and relatively the ones of lower topicality are ar‐ranged behind .Finally ,the article proposes one series of problems about Chinese objects that should be explored in future .
