Abstract:(CoCrFeMnNi)90Al6Ti4 high entropy alloy (HEA) was prepared by adding Al and Ti elements into CoCrFeMnNi HEA. The alloy underwent processes including copper mold suction casting, 1473 K homogenization, 30 % cold rolling + 1273 K annealing + 1073 K aging, and water quenching and heating treatment. Microstructure and phase composition of both as-cast and heat-treated (CoCrFeMnNi)90Al6Ti4 HEA were studied using metallographic microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The effect of heat treatment processes on the precipitation of second phases in (CoCrFeMnNi)90Al6Ti4 HEA was investigated, and mechanical properties of as-cast and heat-treated (CoCrFeMnNi)90Al6Ti4 HEA were studied via hardness tests. The results show that in as-cast (CoCrFeMnNi)90Al6Ti4 HEA, the second phase precipitated is primarily L21 structured AlTiNi2 phase. After homogenization, cold rolling, annealing, and aging processes, both the quantity and size of the second phase increase, with a small amount of nanoscale L12 phase appearing after aging treatment. With the progression of heat treatment, the hardness of (CoCrFeMnNi)90Al6Ti4 HEA increases, and mechanical properties are improved.

Abstract:Adopting the undercooling technique combined molten glass denucleating with cyclical superheating, the solidification microstructures of undercooled and hypercooled Fe-B eutectic alloy melts were investigated by the thermal analysis of the cooling curves. The results show that the variations of cooling curves of alloy melts reveal the undercooling extent of melts, i.e. according to the analysis of the characteristic parameters in cooling curves the achievement of undercooled and hypercooled microstructures can be determined directly. And the corresponding relation between the nucleation, distribution, grain size as well as eutectic morphology of the primary phase and the undercooling degree can also be reflected by the cooling curves.

Abstract:In order to analyze the phase equilibria that are realized in the Fe–Mn–Cr–C–O system at the liquid metal existence temperatures, an extensive material on the thermodynamics of the interaction reactions of components dissolved in liquid iron has been generalized and systematized, and a database of mutually consistent data has been created. For the first time, the thermodynamic modeling of liquidus line coordinates has been performed and state diagrams for MnO–Cr2O3 and FeO–MnO–Cr2O3 systems have been plotted. The temperature for MnCr2O4 incongruent melting ( = 1812°С) and the enthalpy and entropy for formation of this compound from the components of the oxide melt of the MnO–Cr2O3 system were calculated ( = 190.77 kJ/mol and ( = 75.62 J/(mol•K), respectively). It is shown that for the FeO–MnO–Cr2O3 system phase diagram, there are extensive areas of equilibrium for the oxide melt with solid oxides solutions FeO, MnO and solid solutions of chromites FeCr2O4, MnCr2O4 with variable composition. The energy parameters of the theory of subregular ionic solutions were determined and used for calculation of the activities of oxide melt components (FeO, Cr2O3, MnO). The data obtained made it possible to refine the boundaries of the liquid metal composition in areas, which is in equilibrium with specific oxide phases. It is shown that at steelmaking temperature (1600°C) and contents of manganese and chromium in liquid iron about 1 wt. %, the formation of spinels’ solid solution inclusions is possible. Increasing the temperature to 1800°C (for example, when metal is blown with oxy-gen) can shift the equilibrium towards the formation of liquid oxide inclusions. The obtained results can be used in modeling of steel alloying with manganese and chromium. The effect of carbon on the nature of the phase equilibria that are realized in the system is taken into account. It is shown that already at a carbon content in the liquid metal at the level of 0.1–0.2 wt. %, there is a wide range of metal compositions that are in equilibrium with the gas phase {CO, CO2}. Thermal stability of microstructures and mechanical properties in a Fe-based Fe-Cr-Mn-Cu-Mo multi-component alloy

Abstract:A Fe-based multi-component alloy, 60Fe-12Cr-10Mn-15Cu-3Mo, was designed and fabricated for nuclear applications in the present study. The crystal structure of the alloy is a ∼85% body – and 15% face–centered cubic. A detailed microstructure analysis indicated that Cu segregated in the alloy to form Cu-rich precipitates, and the Cu precipitates grew during high temperature annealing at up to 773 K. The high temperature tensile test of the alloys showed that both the yield stress and tensile strength of the 60Fe-12Cr-10Mn-15Cu-3Mo were greater than those of typical austenitic and ferritic stainless steels at 773 K. The Vickers microhardness of the designed alloy did not change after high temperature annealing for 1 h at up to 1073 K. The results indicated that the designed alloy has the potential to be used for high temperature applications.

Abstract:Microstructures of Fe-Mn alloy with Mn content of 8% and 11% in two different cooling rates (1.3×103 K/s and 5.3×10 3 K/s, respectively) during near-rapid solidification were observed, and those revealed that with the same Mn content, lath martensite proportion is increasing with the growing cooling rate, meanwhile, as Mn content growing from 8% to 11%, martensite proportion is growing and ferrite proportion is opposite in both cooling rates. When Mn content is up to 15%, HCP phase was obtained. The driving forces of γ→α′ and γ→ε phase transformation increase with the increasing Mn content but decrease with increasing temperature when Mn contents ranges from 2% to 15%. When Mn content is in the same range, the driving force of γ→α′ phase transformation is larger than the one of γ→ε phase transformation, as a result that α′ phase transformation is easier than γ phase transformation.

Abstract:Mn-based antiferromagnetic alloys, e.g. Mn–Fe and Mn–Cu, are widely used for their magnetic shape memory effect and reversible shape memory effect, which are closely related to their fcc–fct martensitic transformation. However, due to a lack of thermodynamic parameters of fct martensite phase, the thermodynamics of such a transformation has not yet been well established. In this work, a method was proposed to solve this question for the first time and could be applied to other systems. By using the sub-regular solution model and thermal equilibrium condition, the Gibbs free energy of fct phase is calculated for the first time and expressed as a function of temperature and alloy composition. Furthermore, the dependences of chemical driving force on temperature for a given composition, that of critical chemical driving force on composition, and that of other thermodynamic quantities, i.e. entropy, enthalpy and heat capacity, on temperature were investigated for the first time. Finally, the influences of the calculating method and the assumption on the calculation were discussed, and the order of fcc–fct martensitic transformation was assessed from the viewpoint of thermodynamics semi-quantificationally, as well as the order of paramagnetic–antiferromagnetic transition.

Abstract:The thermodynamical assessment of high entropy alloys (Fe-Ni-Cx (X=0.3-0.5)), (Fe-Cr-Cx (X=0.3-0.5)) system is performed in this research work through FEDAMO database and Thermo-Calc software package. The high energy thermal analysis is manipulated for yield strength from FCC to BCC, precipitation from cementite to M7C3 (grain boundaries), Crack Susceptibility Coefficient for Fe-Ni-Cx ,Fe-Cr-Cx ternary alloys system at (1900-3000)K temperature with constant atmospheric pressure of 106 Pascal. The highest crack susceptibility coefficient for Fe-Cr-C, Fe-Ni-C system is found 2.21043, 0.26294 with mass percent of C 0.2500%, at 3000K of temperature with Mass percent. Yield strength from FCC to BCC is found 824.0453, 100.67063 for Fe-Cr-C, Fe-Ni-C ternary alloys. Phase transition is noted from cementite to M7C3 at 1346.77339 K. FCC_A1#3 phases with 0.98772 moles and 0.01228 mole Of M7C3 with 0 moles of M23C6 carbide phases observed. The comprehensive line investigation of mechanical properties is justified with simulation/computational inputs. The results are feasible for industrial sectors and metallurgical centers for operation. The alloy shows equilibrium and good stability.

Abstract:The given research shows the thermodynamic analysis and calculation of the basic thermal properties of the high entropy alloy Fe-Ni-Cx (x=0.3-0.5) of concentration. The system is investigated through Thermo-calc package with FEDAT databases and Calphad method. The evaluation of interactions is found maximum at 0.04070 J/m2 in the Fe-Ni-C ternary alloy system. The FCC_A1 phase is found the phase associated with highest molar volume in the Fe- Ni-Cx (x=0.3-0.5) ternary alloy system. The phase FCC_A1 is having austenite coordination with increasing density and apparent heat capacity. The temperature variation results the composite phases to be disappears with required level. The system is found highest apparent heat capacity 0.39269 j/mol. The density of phases becomes constant and it indicates the rare temperature withstanding phases. The fluctuations in the density of phases are changing with temperature as a result of phase’s nature and stability. The better magnetic properties are found for Basic centered cubic structure with highest interfacial energy. The alloy shows better magnet ic coordination and thermodynamic properties enhancement for further analysis.

Abstract:The high-temperature properties of new alloys need to be investigated to guide the hot working process. The temperature sensitivity of various microstructures of Fe45Mn15Cr15Ni25 and Fe35Mn15Cr15Ni25Al10 cobalt-free high-entropy alloys was investigated using high-temperature tensile tests. For recrystallized alloys, the increase in aluminum (Al) atoms exacerbates the emergence of serration behavior, prolongs the strain hardening capacity, and delays the decrease in plasticity. The Fe35Mn15Cr15Ni25Al10 alloy, with a high-density precipitated phase, exhibits excellent mechanical properties at 673 K. It has a yield strength of 735 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 1030 MPa, and an elongation of 11%. Ultimately, it has been found that the addition of the element Al improves the strength, oxidation resistance, and thermal stability of the alloy. According to the solid solution strengthening model fitting and nanoindentation results, the temperature sensitivity of the yield strength of the alloy is primarily attributed to the solid solution strengthening and phase interface forces. There is relatively less variation in grain boundary strengthening and precipitation strengthening. The relationship between the mechanical properties and temperature of the alloy can be predicted to guide the machining process of the alloy.

Abstract:Thermodynamic property of solid MnS–CrS–FeS system was determined based on the combination between thermodynamic properties of liquid MnS–FeS, CrS–FeS, and MnS–CrS–FeS phase determined by the authors and reported phase diagram of MnS–FeS, CrS–FeS and MnS–CrS system. The determined parameters were verified by comparison with experimental results of equilibrium relationship between metal/sulfide in Fe–Cr–Mn–S system at 1793 K. By utilizing the determined parameters, phase equilibria involving sulfide phase in liquid Fe–Cr–Mn–S system was established. According to the phase equilibria information, controllability of MnS–CrS–FeS sulfide phase in typical stainless steel during solidification was evaluated.

Abstract:A systematic investigation was undertaken to analyze the microstructure and thermal-physical properties of hypereutectic Al-xFe alloys. With increasing Fe content, the Al13Fe4 phase undergoes a morphological shift from needle-like to lamellar-like. The coarse Al13Fe4 negatively affects the thermal conductivity (TC), resulting in a decrease from 200.1 to 84.5 W/(m/K) of TC as the Fe content rises from 2 to 12 wt%. Simultaneously, the thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) decreases. At 100°C, Al-12Fe has a CTE of 17.6 × 10–6/K. Additionally, first-principles calculations were used to understand the intrinsic properties of the Al13Fe4. Using the quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA), the linear CTE of Al13Fe4 at 100°C was calculated to be 9.88 × 10–6/K. By integrating experiments and theoretical calculations, the generalized effective medium theory (GEMT) and a modified Turner model were employed to quantitatively describe the correlation between the microstructural evolution of Al-xFe alloys and their TC/CTE.Graphical abstract

Abstract:In this work, we report the evolution behavior of Fe and Fe-rich phases in the high-Fe concentration recycled Al-Si-Mg aluminum melt with and without alloying elements (Mn, Cr, Co) introduced. Firstly, the thermodynamic calculations reveal that the addition of Mn, Cr, and Co could improve the nucleation temperature of the Fe-rich phase. Moreover, four solidified ingots for Al-10Si-0.5Mg-1Fe alloy(base alloy) and the base alloy with 1.3 wt% Mn, 0.8 wt% Cr, and 0.8 wt% Co added, respectively, were prepared by holding the melt for 30 min at 610 °C after all the raw materials were fully melted. Microstructure examination revealed that the addition of Co resulted in the formation of the needle-like Fe-rich phase, which further leads to a poor settling effect and low iron removal efficiency. In contrast, the addition of Mn and Cr favors converting β-AlFeSi into α-AlFeMnSi, and forming the Chinese script and fish-bone Fe-rich phase. The size of the Fe-rich phase formed after adding Cr is smaller, while the residual Fe content after adding Mn is less. Also, the sludge phase at the bottom of the ingot presents a polygonal shape and long rod shape after adding Mn and Cr, respectively. Further, the Mn alloying increases the particle size of the sludge, while Cr refines the sludge phase and increases the aspect ratio (length/width ratio) of the sludge. Particularly, for Al-Si-Mg alloy with 1.0% Fe content, the superior mechanical properties are obtained by adding 0.8 wt% Cr, and the tensile strength reaches 136 MPa. After adding 1.3 wt% Mn, the Fe content of the upper section is reduced to 0.37 wt%, and the Fe removal rate achieves 63%. The obtained results provide some guidelines for achieving high iron separation efficiency in recycled aluminum-silicon alloy melts.

Abstract:In this study, we simulated the solidification behavior, microsegregation, and heat treatment in Fe–xMn–7.5Al–5Cr–1.0C lightweight steels using the CALculation of PHAse Diagrams method. The solidification paths and microsegregation of these steels were calculated with the Scheil-Gulliver model and equilibrium calculator in the Thermo-Calc® software. At the same time, thermodynamic calculations predicted heat-treatment temperatures for different steels. The transformation path of the Fe–xMn–7.5Al–5Cr–1.0C (x = 18 and 20 wt.%) lightweight steels is as following: liquid → liquid + δ-ferrite → δ-ferrite + γ-austenite → γ-austenite → γ-austenite + M 7 C 3 , according to equilibrium and Scheil's calculations. In case of 25 wt.% Mn steel, the two-phase region of δ-ferrite and γ-austenite is absent in the transition path. The segregation behaviour of solute elements in the liquid, ferrite, and austenite phases were predicted using the Scheil model. The heat treatment temperature for single-phase formation is expected to be between 900 °C and 1030 °C.

Abstract:The present study was performed on two AlSi7Cu3 alloys with different Fe and Mn contents (standard alloy and high-Fe/Mn alloy). The evolution of microstructures during solidification of the standard AlSi7Cu3 alloy was investigated by thermal analysis and interrupted quenching test. The effect of Fe and Mn content on the solidification reaction and sequence were studied. The results show that increasing the Fe and Mn content changes the precipitation sequence of the iron-intermetallic α-Al15 (Fe,Mn)3Si2 and β-Al5FeSi, leading to the precipitation of α + β phases at a higher temperature. Microstructural characterizations were also performed on the fully solidified alloys to study the effect of Fe and Mn content on the microstructure of AlSi7Cu3 alloy. Fe and Mn were found to promote the formation of Fe-intermetallics. With the increase of Fe/Mn content, Fe-intermetallics increased in both size and amount, while more small pores (Feret diameter < 200 µm) were also introduced. 3D networks of α-Al15(Fe,Mn)3Si2 and β-Al5FeSi phases were revealed by Lab X-ray Computed Tomography, however, it is difficult to perform a quantitative analysis of the respective volume fraction of α-Al15(Fe,Mn)3Si2 and β-Al5FeSi phase from their 3D morphology. Monotonic tensile tests on both alloys show the mechanical properties of the studied alloys were not sensitive to the Fe/Mn content, while the fractography analysis reveals that cracks growth and final fracture under monotonic load are more prone to occur through the eutectic Si, Al2Cu phases and iron-intermetallics than through aluminium matrix.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:The Al–Fe–Ni eutectic alloy was produced by gravity cast, and the thermal stability of this eutectic alloy was studied for the first time in this work. The phase composition was characterized by X-ray diffraction, and the morphology evolution of eutectic phase was analyzed by differential scanning calorimeter and scanning electron microscopy. According to the microstructure evolution of the eutectic phase exposed to different temperatures, three stages can be divided to distinguish coarsening behaviors of the eutectic phase, including the stable stage, transient coarsening stage and fully coarsening stage. In each stage, the coarsening behavior of eutectic phase was studied. Firstly, it was found that the stable stage can be maintained up to at least 673K. Subsequently, the eutectic phase should go through coarsening and spheroidization in the transient coarsening stage. Among this stage, both the shape change and diffusion factors have played the vital roles in affecting the coarsening rate and spheroidization process. Finally, in the fully coarsening stage, the volume fraction of eutectic phase was deemed to be the main reason accounted for the difference between the results given in literature and this work.

Abstract:This study proposed a multi-component alloy FeCrNiAl0.5 as a candidate materials for structural applications at high temperatures. The phase structure, microstructure and chemical composition of the alloy were characterized. The results show that the alloy possesses only BCC crystal structure consisting of the ordered (Ni,Al) phase and disordered [Fe, Cr] phase. Microstructural observation combined with XRD results clearly show that the as-cast alloy exhibits a non-homogeneous microstructure with pronounced dendritic and interdendritic regions. Besides, the as-cast alloy possesses great electrical and thermal conductivity compared with other HEAs and nickel-based alloy. Moreover, the oxidation behaviors at high temperature were systematically investigated and shows a surprisingly good oxidation resistance property compared with commercially available steels and alloys. The oxidation active energy is 259.3740 kJ/mol ranging from 1173 to 1273 K. The predominant oxide is Al2O3, Cr2O3 and FeCr2O4 and the oxidation mechanisms were further discussed. This study suggests that FeCrNiAl0.5 multi-component alloy exhibites great promise for high temperature structural materials.
Thermodynamic Consideration of the Effect of Alloying Elements on Martensitic Transformation in Fe-Mn-Si Based Alloys

Abstract:The critical driving force for martensitic transformation, the stacking fault energy of parent phase at the start martensite start temperature Ms and the influence of anti-ferromagnetic transition on the Gibbs energy of Fe-Mn-Si alloys have been reviewed. The Gibbs energies of the fcc(gamma) and hcp(epsilon) phases as a function of temperature have also been evaluated for Fe-Mn-Si-Cr quaternary alloys. The critical driving force for martensitic transformation in a representative quaternary alloy (Fe-26.4Mn-6.2Si-5.2Cr) was determined to be -145.25 J/mol, significantly lower than the value for Fe-30Mn-6Si. implying that the substitution of Cr for Mn decreases the stacking fault energy of the austenite.

Abstract:The article presents the results of thermodynamic diagrammatic analysis of the Al-Si-Mn-Fe metal system as characterizing the final composition of the manganese-containing complex ferroalloy. By the method of thermodynamic diagrammatic analysis, the phase equilibrium of the Al-Si-Mn-Fe metal system was constructed, and the coexisting phases in the alloy were determined. Experimental samples of the aluminosilicomanganese alloy were studied on an Empyrean Malvern Panalytical X-ray diffractometer (XRD), where the presence of phases in the form of an intermetallic compound was determined - MnSi, Mn 15 Si 26 , Al 2 Fe 3 Si 4 , Al 5 Fe 2 , FeSi and structurally free silicon.

Abstract:This study employs thermodynamic-diagram analysis to investigate component ratios within the Fe-Al-Si-Cr system, focusing on the behavior of homogeneous liquid states. Through comprehensive modeling, a phase diagram is constructed, elucidating the interplay of iron, aluminum, silicon, and chromium components. This study identifies stable elementary tetrahedra within the system, providing insights into phase compositions and distribution. Key findings reveal the significance of tetrahedral geometry in understanding and optimizing alloy compositions, particularly in the context of complex chromium alloys. This research underscores the utility of thermodynamic analysis in advancing our understanding of alloy systems and facilitating the optimization of production processes.

Abstract:In this paper, Fe−8.5Mn−1.5Al light−weight medium Mn steel is used as the research object, and the hot compression test is conducted by Gleeble−3500 thermal simulation tester. The dynamic reversion and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) processes are analyzed according to the true stress−strain curve; the θ−σ work−hardening rate curve is plotted by P−J double differential method to analyze the influence law between work−hardening and dynamic reversion and recrystallization softening effect of the material; the DRX critical strain model is established to analyze the influence law of deformation parameters on DRX; Based on the dynamic material model theory, the hot working diagram and three−dimensional power dissipation diagram are constructed, and the best hot working area is determined by combining the microstructure of the material. Finally, based on the above research content, a systematic overview of the dynamic softening effects of DRX and dynamic recovery (DRV) will be provided.
