Abstract:Polyaniline/montmorillonite (PAn/MMT) composite material has been prepared through chemical-oxidative polymerization by using NH4S2O8 as the oxidant, and it was found that both the composites have inorganic and organic material characteristics and many outstanding performance through the copolymerization coupling of MMT and polyaniline. Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are used to characterize the composition and structures of composite materials, as well as test the conductivity of composite materials through a four-probe technique. The preparation conditions of PAn/MMT conducting composites are optimized. The optimal conditions have been identified for the reaction time, amount of oxidizer, concentration of HCI, and the amount of MMT. Besides, the results show that when the reaction lasts for 8 hr in the ice bath, the amount of MMT is 0.4 g/5 ml An, the mole ratio of oxidant to aniline is 1, and the concentration of hydrochloric acid is 2 M, the composite had the largest conductivity up to 11.5 S/cm. In addition, we also did an elemental analysis of the composite mechanism of PAn/MMT composites. Copyright (C) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:We present a method to prepare polyaminophenol from solid-state aminophenol monomers using atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. The polymerizations of o-aminophenol and m-aminophenol are studied. The polymers were analyzed via Fourier-Transform inferred spectroscopy (FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The kinetics of the polymerization reactions were investigated by using UV-vis and the polymerization was found to be first-order for both o-aminophenol and m-aminophenol. The resulting polymer film exhibits a conductivity of 1.0 × 10−5 S/m for poly-o-aminophenol (PoAP) and 2.3 × 10−5 S/m for poly-m-aminophenol (PmAP), which are two orders more conductive than undoped (~10−7 S/m) polyaniline (PANI), The PoAP has a quinoid structure and the PmAP has an open ring keto-derivative structure. The process provides a simple method of preparing conductive polyaminophenol films.

Abstract:In the present paper, polyaniline (PANI) was polymerized by ammonium persulphate using a chemically oxidative process under mild tempertures ranging from -5-20 degrees C. Electrical conductivity of as synthesized PANI got enhanced gradually owing to the increase in molecular weight and crystallinity with decrease in synthesis temperature. Extraction with tetrahydrofuran (THF) was employed as the purification method of emeraldine base (EB) to enhance the electrical conductivity of PANI effectively attributed to the removal of the low molecular weight fractions and defective molecular chains. Methanesulfonic acid (MSA) was used to dope EB due to its strong acidity and small molecular size, and the amount of dopant versus EB was also optimized. Using a novel "synergistic doping" process with m-cresol, electrical conductivity of PANI is further enhanced owing to more regular molecular chains which resulted in better interchain charge carriers' conduction. The emeraldine salts obtained finally have high electrical conductivity reaching up to 32.5 S cm(-1), which is much higher than that of the conventionally synthesized sample reported previously. Abstract:In this communication, we report that aniline can be conveniently polymerized directly into conducting material using an emulsion polymerization technique. The polymerization is carried out in non-polar or weakly polar solvents in the presence of a functionalized protonic acid that acts simultaneously as a surfactant (emulsifier) and as a protonating agent (dopant) for the resulting electrically conducting polyaniline. It was found that the present direct, one-step preparation of polyaniline-protonic acid complexes in organic solvents may lead to polyaniline with significantly higher molecular weight than that prepared in acidic aqueous solutions. In addition, the present polyaniline-functionalized acid complexes displayed higher solubilities in non-polar or weakly polar organic solvents than corresponding complexes obtained by mechanically mixing the emeraldine base form of polyaniline with the protonic acid. Films cast from concentrated solutions routinely exhibit conductivities in excess of 100 S cm-1. Additionally, it was found that, using the emulsion polymerization route, polyaniline-functionalized protonic acid complexes of fibrillar morphology can be produced, which have an exceptional degree of crystalline order and orientation.

Abstract:Conductive polyaniline was synthesized by microemulsion polymerization with aniline as mono-mer,dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid and hydrochloric acid as composite doped acid.The structure of conductive polyaniline was analyzed by FTIR.The influence of synthetic conditions on conductivity of polyaniline was dis-cussed,and the influence of organic-inorganic composite acid system on thermal stability of polyaniline was studied as well.The conductivity of polyaniline was the best when n(DBSA)∶n(HCl)was 3∶2,n(DBSA/HCl)∶n(monomer)was 2.0∶1,polymerization temperature was 20 ℃,polymerization time was 10 h.Thermal stability of conductive polyaniline had enhanced siginificantly when doped by organic-inorganic composite acid with appropriate proportion.

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI) was synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline (ANI) in the presence of sulfonated crosslinked polystyrene (SCPS) particles in neutral water. The polymerization of ANI occurred preferentially on the surfaces of the SCPS particles, resulting in core/shell structured SCPS/PANI particles. The conductivities of the SCPS/PANI particles increased with increasing degree of sulfonation of the SCPS and with increasing ANI/SCPS weight ratios in the reactants. Conductive epoxy-based composites were prepared by curing the blend of SCPS/PANI particles and epoxy resin with an aromatic amine curing reagent, indicating the core/shell. structured particles were stable, to some extent, to alkaline environments, which will be of significant importance for the practical application of PANI in many cases. Abstract:The invention relates to a method for preparing water-soluble conductive polyaniline. The water-soluble conductive emeraldine imino polyaniline is synthesized by adopting microemulsion polymerization in an ice-water bath, and taking aniline as a monomer, ammonium persulphate as an initiator, dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid as a doping agent and emulsifying agent and ethanol as an assistant emulsifying agent. The preparation method comprises the following steps: under the conditions of the ice-water bath and stirring, adding the aniline into aqueous solution of the dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (the molar ratio of the aniline to the dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid is 1:1-1:2), adding the ethanol (the volume ratio of the ethanol to deionized water is 1:4-4:1), stirring for 30 minutes, ensuring that the concentration of the aniline in the system is 0.15 to 0.3mol/L, adding 1mol/L aqueous solution of ammonium persulphate (the molar ratio of the ammonium persulphate to the aniline is 1:1-1:1.25), and stirring for 60 minutes; and adding the reaction system to a container with the temperature of between 0 and 5 DEG C, performing reaction for 48 hours, pumping and filtering, washing the reactant with ethanol/water to obtain a filter cake, and drying the filter cake under vacuum to obtain dark green powder.

Preparation of the PAn/PMMA Conductive Composite by In-Situ Emulsion Polymerization

Abstract:By in-situ emulsion polymerization,the composite of polyaniline/polymethyl methacrylate was synthesized,using(NH_4)_2S_2O_8 as oxidant,dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid as emulsifier and dopant,and aniline as monomer.The shape of the composite was observed.The effect of emulsion polymerization conditions,such as doping acid,monomer,oxidant,reaction time and temperature on the conductivity and yield of polyaniline was studied.The results show that the composite particles have core-shell structure and nano-scale size.The proper doping conditions were:APS/An(mole ratio)=1.0～1.2,DBSA/An(mole ratio)=1.5～1.8,An/PMMA(mass ratio)=1/4,reation time =18 hours;reaction temperature 5℃.The shift to high frequency direction of the Infrared spectrum absorption peaks of dopped polyaniline proved that the addition of PMMA lessen the doping ratio of the composite.

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI), fully protonated with camphor sulfonic acid (CSA), was found to form liquid-crystalline solutions in m-cresol. The existence of this interesting state of matter was inferred from observations of opalescence, depolarization of plane-polarized light and the existence of a critical concentration for the onset of the formation of the liquid-crystalline phase. This critical concentration was found, in accord with existing theory, to decrease monotonically as the viscosity or molecular weight of the polyaniline increased. By shearing the liquid-crystalline solutions onto glass substrates and subsequent precipitation in acetone, oriented polyaniline films were obtained. The existence of a liquid-crystalline phase implies a rather rigid conformation of the fully protonated polyaniline in solution. Importantly, the emeraldine base form of PANI remained isotropic in solutions in m-cresol up to very high concentrations. Thus it is suggested that protonation induces a chain stiffening and extension of the polyaniline macromolecules (relative to the insulating emeraldine base) resulting from a combination of electronic delocalization and counter-ion 'crowding'.

Abstract:The N-alkylated emeraldine bases (N-butyl, N-hexyl, N-octyl, N-decyl, N-dodecyl, and N-hexadecyl) are synthesized by incorporation of flexible alkyl chains onto the polyaniline (PAn) through an N-alkylation method with the emeraldine base. The solubility of PAn in common organic solvents is improved remarkably with the alkylation and the oxidation level is maintained at 40-50 mol% (close to that of the original emeraldine base, 50%) allowing for an adequate acid doping. When carbon number of the alkyl side chain is six or more, the polymers can be dissolved in common organic solvents (such as tetrahydrofuran, dichloromethane, and chloroform) even in the presence of a protonic organic acid as dopant, such as dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DDBSA) and camphor sulfonic acid (CSA), and free-standing films can be obtained by casting from the solutions. When the carbon number is 12, the polymer film is flexible. DDBSA-doped N-alkylated emeraldine salt films cast from polymer solutions in dichloromethane in the presence of the acid dopant have maximum conductivities in the range 10(-2) - 10(-4) S/cm, being two to three orders of magnitude higher than those of the reported HClO4-doped poly(N-alkylaniline)s. Abstract:Conducting blends of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyaniline (PANI) doped with dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA) were prepared from a mixture of chloroform and dimathyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The PANI-DBSA used in these studies was prepared by emulsion polymerization. Electrical and structural properties of the blends were characterized by means of electrical conductivity measurements, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction technique and FT-IR spectroscopy. The percolation threshold of the blends is below 4%. The low percolation threshold for conductivity can be explained by the formation of conducting network near the surface of the samples.

Abstract:Conducting composites of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) copolymer containing 10% mass ratio methylacrylate and dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid doped polyaniline (PANI–DBSA) were prepared by solution blending. Electrical properties of the blends were characterized by means of electrical conductivity measurements and the phase structures were investigated via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-IR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA). It was found that the electrical conductivity of the composites increased with the increase of PANI–DBSA content and the percolation threshold lay around 3.2wt%. DSC and DMA measurements showed that there was only one Tg for each blend and the values of Tg varied with the PANI–DBSA content, implying that the PANI–DBSA/PAN blend was at least partially compatible. The formation of the hydrogen bonding between the carbonyl groups in PAN copolymer and the imine groups in PANI–DBSA was identified by the FT-IR spectra. XRD demonstrated that the intrinsic layered arrangement of PANI–DBSA was disaggregated in the blends. Nanosize network structure of PANI–DBSA dispersing in PAN matrix and the so-called phase reverse occurring in the skin layer of the film samples at low PANI–DBSA loading were observed by SEM.

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI) is a conductive polymer with simple synthesis, low cost, environmental friendliness and high electrochemical activity. It is widely used as an electrode material in supercapacitors. However, during the charge-discharge cycle, the expansion and contraction of the volume of PANI caused by doping and de-doping of anions often leads to a decline of rate performance and cycle stability. In this paper, four kinds of acid doped PANI electrodes were prepared by electrochemical deposition on the surface of carbon cloth. The type of acids has a significant impact on the final electrochemical performance of PANI. Phytic acid (PA) doped PANI exhibits the best electrochemical performance with a high specific capacitance of 363.6 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, and the retention rate of at 20 A g-1 is 91.3%. In addition, the introduction of 0.1wt% polyvinyl alcohol into electrolyte can greatly increase the load of electrochemical active substances without affecting the electrochemical performance of electrode materials.

Abstract:Abstract Polymers as they are known as molecules formed by repetition of small molecules known as monomers, polymers that are often used cannot conduct electricity. Along with the development of the polymer era at this time can also conduct electricity known as conductive polymers. One of the conductive polymers that attracts attention is polyaniline. Synthesis of polyaniline conductive polymers is carried out with aniline monomers mixed with Ethylene Glycol Dimetacrylate (EGDMA) as Crosslinkers , and Dimethoxy phenylacetophenone (DMPP) as the initiator. In this reasearch, the polymerization processed with the photopolymerization method with a mixture of Aniline (mL), DMPP (0.1 g), and EGDMA (mL) polymerized with photopolymer. The polymers obtained were tested for electrical conductivity, the composition which showed optimum conductivity was in the ratio of aniline and EGDMA 1 : 1 with the electrical conductivity of 0.001462 Ohm.cm −1 . The conductivity measurement is done by using Four Point Probe (FPP) and other characterization measurements using FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) and TGA (Thermo-gravimetric Analysis).

Abstract:ABSTRACT Blends of dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid doped polyaniline (PANI-DBSA) with either polyacrylonitrile (PAN) in xylene/dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) mixture or polystyrene (PS) in xylene were solution cast. The PANI-DBSA complex was obtained directly from emulsion polymerization, in which DBSA acted simultaneously as a surfactant and as a protonating agent. The morphologies of the blends were characterized by optical microscopy (OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and Dynamical Mechanical Analysis (DMA). Electrical conductivity was measured for various compositions. It was found that the formation of a continuous network was strongly associated with percolation and conductivity. The morphologies of the two blends were significantly different, which arose from the different compatibility between the components in the blends.

Abstract:Conducting polyaniline/partially phosphorylated poly(vinyl alcohol)/polyacrylate ((PAn/P-PVA)/PAc) composite nanoparticles were prepared by the encapsulation of the polyaniline/partially phosphorylated poly(vinyl alcohol) (PAn/P-PVA) nanoparticles with polyacrylate (PAc) via the emulsifier-free seeded emulsion polymerization. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) analysis of the polyaniline/partially phosphorylated poly(vinyl alcohol)/polyacrylate ((PAn/P-PVA)/PAc) composite nanoparticles showed that the PAn/P-PVA nanoparticles were successfully encapsulated with the polyacrylate (PAc). With the increasing of the feeding ratio of acrylate monomers, the diameter of the (PAn/P-PVA)/PAc composite nanoparticles increased and their electrical conductivity decreased. Furthermore, the composite particles become irregular morphology, compared with the spherical PAn/P-PVA nanoparticles. Cyclic voltammogram (CV) revealed that the composite nanoparticles were electroactive. And good quality films with appreciable Young's modulus and tensile strength could be obtained from the (PAn/P-PVA)/PAc composite nanoparticles.
Enhanced Conductivity of Polyaniline in the Presence of Nonionic Amphiphilic Polymers and Their Diverse Morphologies

Abstract:ABSTRACTPoly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and its copolymers have excellent affinity for protons and contribute to proton transfer. In the present study, PEO and its copolymers, poly[(ethylene oxide)20‐(propylene oxide)70‐(ethylene oxide)20] (EO20PO70EO20, P123) and poly[(ethylene oxide)106‐(propylene oxide)70‐(ethylene oxide)106] (EO106PO70EO106, F127), have been found to significantly enhance the conductivity of polyaniline (PANI). After introducing these polymers, the conductivity of PANI is markedly promoted more than two orders of magnitude compared to that of PANI without additives, from 5.2 to 667 S/m. The molecular weight of PEO affects the conductivity of PANI/PEO. The mechanism by which these amphiphilic polymers are beneficial to the conductivity of PANI is studied experimentally and theoretically. The PANI/P123 prepared in the presence of PEO block copolymer shows gradually varying morphologies containing leaflike sheets, rodlike particles, and uniform chestnutlike sphere particles. This is similar to the morphology change of micelles with surfactant concentration. PEO, P123, and F127 are further found to have a positive effect on PANI as a material for sensors or supercapacitors, since high specific capacity and fast response rate are desired qualities in sensors and supercapacitors. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Conductive polymers, such as polyaniline (PANI), have interesting applications, ranging from flexible electronics, energy storage devices, sensors, antistatic or anticorrosion coatings, etc. However, the full exploitation of conductive polymers still poses a challenge due to their low processability. The use of compatible stabilizers to obtain dispersible and stable colloids is among the possible solutions to overcome such drawbacks. In this work, potato starch was used as a steric stabilizer for the preparation of colloidal polyaniline (emeraldine salt, ES)/starch composites by exploiting the oxidative polymerization of aniline in aqueous solutions with various starch-to-aniline ratios. The polyaniline/starch bio-composites were subjected to structural, spectroscopic, thermal, morphological, and electrochemical analyses. The samples were then tested for their dispersibility/solubility in a range of organic solvents. The results demonstrated the formation of PANI/starch biocomposites with a smaller average size than starch particles, showing improved aqueous dispersion and enhanced solubility in organic solvents. With respect to previously reported PANI-EB (emeraldine base)/starch composites, the novel colloids displayed a lower overall crystallinity, but the conductive nature of PANI-ES enhanced its electrochemical properties, resulting in richer redox chemistry, particularly evident in its oxidation behavior, as observed through cyclic voltammetry. Finally, as proof of the improved processability, the colloids were successfully integrated into a thin polyether sulfone (PES) membrane.

Abstract:Copolymerization is one of the important modification methods of polyaniline (PANI). But due to the synthesis mechanism and preparation condition, the synthesized polyaniline copolymers are mainly diblock or triblock copolymers in the past few decades. In this research, a method for synthesizing linear polyethylene glycol-polyaniline multi-alternating block (more than triblock) copolymer (PEG-PANI) was proposed. The results of FT-IR, 1HNMR, UV, XRD, DSC and TG analyses demonstrated that PEG-PANI was successfully synthesized.
