Abstract:In this paper, the properties and microstructure of microwave sintered and conventionally sintered Fe-2Cu-0.6C powder metal is studied. The result showes that, compares with the conventional sintered, microwave sintered samples exhibit better properties, having densities of 7.20 g/cm3, rockwell hardness (HRB) of 75, tensile strengths of 413.90 MPa and their elongation is 6.0%. Modern analysis methods including optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been used, and the result showes that microwave sintered samples have finer microstructures, with small, rounded, and uniformly distributed pores. They are more flaky and granularly pearlite, when compare with the conventional sintering. The fracture analysis indicates that the conventional sintered samples showed brittle, intergranular fractures, while the microwave sintered bodies show mixed fractures, made up of brittle intergranular and ductile intergranular fractures.
