Abstract:A novel extraction process to recover lithium ions from simulated salt lake brines with high Mg/Li ratio was developed. Tributyl phosphate (TBP), FeCl3 and diethyl succinate were used as extractant, co-extraction agent and diluent, respectively. Effects of extraction conditions containing the volume concentration of TBP, Fe/Li molar ratio and O/A phase ratio on extraction performances were studied. The highest one-stage extraction efficiency of lithium ions and separation factor were about 65% and 350, respectively. In addition, the third phase did not appear over all the volume concentrations of TBP. HCl + MgCl2 and HCl + NaCl were used as washing and stripping agents, respectively. Effects of washing and stripping conditions on washing and stripping performances were investigated too. Mg(OH)2 and MgCO3 were used as regeneration agents to regenerate the organic phase. The extraction efficiency of lithium ions remained at about 53% during reusing the organic phase ten times, demonstrating that the proposed extraction system had good stability and reusability.

Abstract:Lithium and its compounds are important strategic resources for the economy and national defense construction. In the Chinese lithium industry, Qinghai old brine, which is the main source of Li+, contains Mg2+ as much as 125.6743 g/L, and the effective separation of these two elements has been a challenging task. We designed and synthesized a benzene sulfonamide acid substance N221 with stronger acidity and steric hindrance to effectively extract Li+ in high Mg/Li solution. The existing acidic extractants include P204, P507 and Cyanex272, among which N221 has the highest beta(Li/Mg) value and E-Li (%) value. The thermodynamic properties of the reaction between N221 and metal ions was explored by means of thermodynamic equilibrium constant and quantum chemical calculation. A large amount of Mg2+ in salt-lake promoted the extraction of Li+, and the mechanism was revealed by mean of molecular dynamics simulations. After stripping, the final Mg/Li (mol/mol) decreased from 15.80 in the Qinghai old brine to 1.27, which meets the conditions of further refining and can obtain high-purity lithium products. A process for separating Li+ from Mg2+ by benzene sulfonamide acid substance is proposed in this study, and the reasons are explained in depth from the experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. Hence, it can be foreseen that this study also has broad application prospects in the recovery of lithium from spent lithium-ion batteries containing a variety of high-valence metal ions.

Abstract:Efficient separation of lithium from salt lake brine with high Na/Li ratio is of great importance for the development of new energy industry. Liquid-liquid extraction using β-diketone system was proved to be an effective approach to separate lithium from alkaline metal ions, while the separation effect of lithium to alkali earth ions needs further investigation. In this work we proposed an extraction process using HBTA/TRPO system to recovery lithium from salt lake brine with high Na/Li ratio. The conditions of saponification, extraction, eluting, stripping and regeneration process was optimized by equilibrium experiments. Through the process, lithium, calcium and magnesium were extracted to the organic phase and then stripped step by step to obtain lithium-rich solution, then the stability of the process and organic was tested by cycle experiments, the results indicated the proposed method was effective and stable. Theoretical study based on density functional theory was conducted to expound the extraction selectivity to different metal ions, and the energy change, electrostatic potential and Mulliken charge of the complexes was obtained, the calculated results suggested the stability of the complexes followed the sequence: Mg2+ > Ca2+ > Li+ > Na+ > K+, which is consistent with the experimental results. The present work may provide a novel way to efficiently recover lithium from salt lake brine with high Na/Li ratio.

Abstract:Lithium is becoming one of the most eye-catching metal elements in modern industry, mainly because of its crucial role in manufacturing lithium-ion batteries. The demand for lithium in the new energy market is burgeoning significantly, while enormous lithium resources reserved in salt lakes in northwest China are not exploited effectively, due to the high Mg/Li mass ratio. Although the TBP extraction system has been applied in lithium extraction from salt lake brines, there are still some problems to be solved, such as its high solubility, easy degradation, and so on. In this work, a novel low dissolution loss extraction system was developed, with DEHEHP and FeCl 3 serving as extractant and co-extractant, respectively. A real brine from Da Qaidam Lake was used to prove its practicality and effectiveness. After studying the detailed conditions of each process, a whole countercurrent process was performed, including eight stages of extraction, two stages of scrubbing, three stages of stripping, and regeneration. It was found that 99.4% of Li + was successfully recovered from the brine, and the stripping liquor contained 22.74 g/L Li + , 0.51 g/L Mg 2+ , and 3.16 g/L B. The concentration of Li + increased approximately 20-fold while the Mg/Li mass ratio decreased by a factor of 3900, from real brine to stripping liquor. High-purity (>98.5%) lithium carbonate products were prepared from the stripping liquor by precipitation. The dissolution loss of the organic phase in the raffinate was only 22.5 ppm, much lower than published works. Finally, the mechanism of extraction and co-extraction were systematically studied and the structure of the complex formed during extraction was revealed as LiFeCl 4 ·2DEHEHP.

Abstract:Lithium is a vital aspect of the strategic development of the alternative energy and nuclear industries, and the demand for this metal is currently increasing rapidly. China possesses significant lithium resources, nearly 80 % of which are situated in salt lake brine. Solvent extraction is a viable means of extracting lithium ions from brine that has high magnesium-to-lithium ratio, and provides high selectivity along with ready scale-up to industrial production levels. The most common extraction technology for such scenarios is the tributyl phosphate (TBP)-FeCl3-kerosene system. However, this system tends to lose Fe3+ during the extraction process and the concurrent use of acid and alkali can seriously affect the stability of the organic phase. The present work demonstrates a new extraction process employing TBP as the main extractant, sodium tetraphenyl boron as a co-extractant and phenethyl isobutyrate as a diluent. Optimization of the relative amounts of these components along with the phase ratio provided a single-stage lithium ion extraction efficiency of 85.70 % together with a separation factor of lithium to magnesium ions of 1175. The organic phase was washed with a LiCl + NaCl solution to remove impurity ions then stripped five times with a NaHCO3 solution, with a Li+ stripping efficiency >99 %. During ten replicate extractions, the Li+ extraction efficiency remained stable at approximately 84 %, demonstrating good stability. NMR spectra verified that the binding strength of metal cations to TBP decreased in the order of Li+ > Na+ ≫ Mg2+, indicating selectivity for the extraction of Li+. This single step NaHCO3 method was adopted to simplify the extraction process. The overall strategy avoids the use of strong acids or bases that otherwise corrode equipment and provides greatly improved long-term stability of the organic phase.

The present invention improves the high concentrations of tributyl phosphate extraction apparatus corrosive strong and long-term operation in the extraction agent dissolved in water, not only in loss of serious problems, and to achieve the efficiency of the prior art extraction of lithium. Extraction process is simple and reliable operation.

Abstract:The paper presents extraction of lithium from salt lake brine by tributyl phosphate (TBP)- kerosene-FeCl3 extraction system. Extraction, washing and back extraction stages were studied systematically. The best conditions were determined by studying the single factors of extraction V-o/V-A ratio, extractant composition, molar ratio of Fe3+ to Li+ and so on, and the results were: extraction V-o/V-A is 1.5, TBP% is 75%, c(Fe)(3+)/c(Li+) is 2, c(H+) is 0.02 mol.L-1, extraction time is 20 min; washing V-o/V-A is 15; back extraction V-o/V-A is 20. The interaction of lithium complex with TBP was investigated by IR and NMR. The results showed that the complex and TBP were associated by hydrogen bond.

Abstract:The present study has proposed a selective Li+ extraction process using a novel extractant of dibenzo-14-crown-4 ether functionalized with an alkyl C16 chain (DB14C4-C16) synthesized based on the ion imprinting technology (IIT). Theoretical analysis of the possible complexes formed by DB14C4-C16 with Li+ and the competing ions of Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ was performed through density functional theory (DFT) modeling. The Gibbs free energy change of the complexes of metal ions with DB14C4-C16 and water molecules were calculated to be -125.81 and -166.01 kJ/mol for lithium, -55.73 and -117.77 kJ/mol for sodium, and -196.02 and -291.52 kJ/mol for magnesium, respectively. Furthermore, the solvent extraction experiments were carried out in both single Li+ and multi-ions containing solutions, and the results delivered a good selectivity of DB14C4-C16 towards Li+ over the competing ions, showing separation coefficients of 68.09 for Ca2+-Li+, 24.53 for K+-Li+, 16.32 for Na+-Li+, and 3.99 for Mg2+-Li+ under the optimal conditions. The experimental results are generally in agreement with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Lithium sources are of great significance for developing the next generation of lithium ion batteries. Most of the world’s lithium sources are found in salt lake brines. The main challenge of lithium extraction from salt lake brine is the separation of lithium ions from other coexisting ions, especially the separation of Li + and Mg 2+ . However, the traditional precipitation method for salt lake lithium extraction is cumbersome. In this project, a new electrolytic device with a solid-state electrolyte was developed for high-efficient lithium extraction from salt lake brines. Li 1+x Al x Ti 2−x (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) is a promising NASICON-type solid-state electrolyte, which exhibits high ionic conductivity ( >10 -4 S/cm) at room temperature. LATP can be used as a lithium ion conductor, that is only lithium ions can transfer through it, which is ideal for separating lithium ions from other ions in salt lake brines. In this project, high-quality LATP was fabricated at a low cost. An electrolytic device was developed for lithium extraction, in which LATP was used together with a sacrificial anode, molten salts, and an inert cathode. Salt lake brines need to be concentrated by solar and/or wind evaporation before lithium extraction. The electrolytic device was operated above the melting point of the concentrated brine water, at which LATP exhibits a higher ionic conductivity for fast lithium ion transfer. A tiny voltage was applied across the two electrodes to drive the electrochemical reaction. The composition of lithium sources before and after extraction was investigated by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Results show that lithium sources with a higher purity level were successfully extracted with high efficiency. Impurity ions were almost completely blocked by LATP.

Abstract:Interests on lithium extraction from the Chinese salt-lake brines have regained momentum due to the growing demand of lithium for application in electric vehicles. Characterized by a high Mg2+/Li+ ratio (MLR), the Chinese salt-lake brine has troubled scientists and engineers for decades. Recent progress has shown significant advantages of membrane technologies. This review summarizes the membrane technologies utilized for lithium extraction, including membrane extraction (ME), nanofiltration (NF), lithium ion-sieve (LIS), electrodialysis (ED), and forward osmosis (FO). The fundamental concepts and separation mechanisms of ME and chemical exchange are introduced. Positive NF membranes, ion-selective ED membranes are discussed in detail in terms of materials design for high permselectivity. Maintaining the high selectivity and adsorption capacity are discussed for LIS membranes. Solutions to design single ion-selective separation membranes by hybrid of mobility and affinity are discussed for the urgent lithium extraction problem. Carbon neutral FO is proposed for the concentration of lithium-enriched brines with a focal on a low structure parameter substrate and a high rejection for highly saline brine. The fundamental and engineering strategies for lithium extraction from high MLR brine will be of strong interest for the harvesting of valuable metal resources from complicated brine.

Abstract:Lithium has been a high-demand element with the rapid development of lithium-ion batteries. The recovery of lithium from salt lake brine via solvent extraction is considered a promising technique. In this study, the solvent extraction process in the tributyl phosphate (TBP)-FeCl3/brine system was investigated. The order of metal ions competitively combining with TBP-FeCl3 was Li+ > Na+ > K+ > Mg2+, and the compositions of main cationic extraction complexes were Li(TBP)(2)(H2O)(2)+, Na(TBP)(2)(H2O)(4)+, K(TBP)(2)(H2O)(4)(+), and Mg(TBP)(2)(H2O)(4)(2+), respectively. The energy decomposition analysis showed that the electrostatics was the major interaction between the metal ions and the solvent (TBP and water). Compared with water, TBP bound more competitively with the metal ions. The calculated species distribution results showed that the ferric ion reacted with the chloride ion to form FeCl2+, FeCl3, and FeCl4- in high Cl- concentration brine. Co-extractant FeCl3 was found to exist in the organic phase in the form of FeCl4- upon comparing the experimental and simulated spectra. Furthermore, the length of the Fe-Cl bond increased and the charge on the iron element was distracted when the FeCln3-n complexes coordinated with the water molecules. This indicated that FeCl4- was more stable in the TBP solvent environment and it can be extracted from the aqueous phase. The results help us understand the extraction mechanism in essence and develop a high-efficiency extraction solvent for industrial lithium recovery.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) has been considered as the backbone of modern energy infrastructures. In recent years, the production rate of Li has lagged behind the global demand due to the proliferation of electric devices and vehicles. To ensure a stable and sustainable supply of Li, electrochemical extraction of Li from unconventional aqueous sources, especially seawater containing almost inexhaustible Li resource, has received extensive attention. To proceed the way to real practices, this review covers a broad knowledge of electrochemical Li recovery processes, including cell configurations, working principles, and performance metrics. Specifically, Li-selective materials (electrodes, adsorbents, and membranes), pivotal to achieve superior Li selectivity and extraction performance, has been carefully summarized to spur innovative design strategies. Herein, an integrated system is conceived where electrochemical Li recovery unit functions as a bridge to connect desalination plant and battery industry, offering a feasible solution to circular economy at the water-energy nexus.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for lithium resources, recovery of lithium from solution with high Na/Li ratio is an effective way to meet the growing demand. Salicylate extraction system has been found to be an effective system for Li/Na separation. In this work, the studies of equilibrium, process and mechanism were carried out for the 2-ethylhexyl salicylate (ES) and trialkyl phosphine oxide (TRPO) co-extraction system. The factors affecting lithium extraction such as composition of the organic phase, the conditions of aqueous phase, extraction time and acid-alkali tolerance of the ES extraction system were systematically investigated; According to the equilibrium study, a series of process studies were carried out for lithium recovery from mother solution of lithium carbonate, and the whole process including extraction, elution, stripping and regeneration was designed, and through the process, 99% of lithium was recovered and lithium-rich solution containing 25.85 g/L Li and 0.08 g/L Na was obtained. In the mechanism study, the extraction process was proved as a thermodynamic spontaneous entropy increase process; At the molecular level, the coordination mechanism was first expounded by ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) and fluorescence spectrum (Fl), which was further confirmed by 1 H NMR and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). The current study points a way to separation of lithium from alkaline solutions, which will support the future supply of lithium in a more economical and sustainable manner.

Abstract:It is very difficult to selectively extract lithium ions from high Mg/Li salt lake brine efficiently and environmentally. Among the conventional extraction system, FeCl3 as the co-extractant has the disadvantages of easy to loss and reducing stability of the organic phase. Therefore, a new co-extractant must be developed and applied for selective extraction of lithium ions. TBP was used as the extractant. According to the optimization of extraction conditions, NaBPh4 and CH2ClBr were selected as the suitable co-extractant and diluent. Under the optimal extraction conditions (molar ratio of NaBPh4 to Li+ = 2.0, TBP volume fraction = 50%, and R(O/A) = 1.0), the one-stage extraction efficiency of Li+ and Li/Mg separation factor reached up to 87.65% and 2260.71, respectively. Effects of washing and stripping conditions on washing and stripping performances were investigated too. Under optimal conditions of washing and stripping processes, the stripping efficiency of Li+ reached up to 98.84% and Li2CO3 product could be directly obtained in the aqueous phase. Then ten continuous cycles of the whole extraction processes were performed and the results verified that the extraction system showed excellent extraction stability and reusability. The extraction mechanism was deeply studied by using simulation calculation on Materials Studio software and nuclear magnetic resonance characterization. The binding capacity of TBP to metal ions follows the sequence: Li+ > Na+ > K+ > Mg2+. This proposed extraction technology not only avoids the use of acid and alkali, but also reduces the process flow, which has great research potential and industrialization value.

Abstract:The consumption of lithium has been increasing rapidly due to its increasing application in lithium-ion batteries. The recovery of lithium from salt lake brines, which accounts for more than 70% of global lithium resources, has become increasingly studied; however, some challenges remain. In a previous study, a mixed ternary solvent extraction system consisting of TBP (tributyl phosphate), FeCl3 and P507 (2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester) was developed. This newly developed system demonstrated good selectivity of Li over Mg and efficient lithium stripping simply using water. In the current study, to demonstrate its practical effectiveness, the TBP/FeCl3/P507 system was tested with a real salt lake brine in both batch and multi-stage simulated counter-current modes. Detailed conditions for extraction, scrubbing and stripping were investigated. In the three-stage simulated counter-current extraction tests, the recovery of lithium reached 99.8%, and in the three-stage simulated counter-current stripping tests, the obtained loaded strip liquor contained (g·L−1): Li, 20.9; Mg, 2.2; and B, 1.6. During stripping, the Fe3+ remained fully in the organic phase, enabling the organic phase to be directly used in the next extraction without regeneration. The high lithium selectivity, lithium recovery and efficient lithium stripping with water of the above process promotes it as a cost-effective and sustainable method for recovering lithium from brines with high Mg/Li ratios.

Abstract:Recovery of lithium from Mg-rich salt-lake brines by solvent extraction has been widely studied for high Li+/Mg2+ selectivity and Li+ extraction efficiency. In a previous study, a ternary synergistic solvent extraction system consisting of tributyl phosphate (TBP), 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507, denoted as HL) and FeCl3 was developed, in which high Li+ selectivity and efficient Li+ stripping simply with water were realized. In this study, to further elucidate the extraction mechanism of the TBP/P507/FeCl3 system and minimize the efforts on the process optimization for Li extraction from Mg-rich salt-lake brines with different component concentrations from different sources, a thermodynamic empirical model based on mass balances and equilibrium equations has been developed. The model parameters were optimized by fitting the calculated data to experimental results. By calculating the distribution of species in the organic phase with the model, it was found that Li+ primarily existed in the form of [Li(TBP)2][FeCl4], followed by [Li(TBP)][FeCl4]. When Li+ was stripped with water, Fe3+ mainly existed in the form of FeCl2L·HL·2TBP in the organic phase at low O/A ratios but converted to [H(TBP)2][FeCl4] at high O/A ratios. This thermodynamic model provides a guide for the design of practical process flow.

Abstract:The elevation of comprehensive lithium recovery remains a formidable challenge in lithium extraction from lithium bearing ores due to the equilibrium solubility constraints affecting the lithium precipitation reaction. Hence, this work drew inspirations from lithium extraction techniques in salt lakes by characterizing the hydrochloric acid leachate of lithium ores as a distinct brine. The leachate composition was regulated and solvent extraction technology for selective lithium extraction was developed. By employing the loaded organic phase with Fe 3+ (2TBP-NaFeCl 4 ) to extract the leachate, and utilizing a four-stage countercurrent extraction process, the extraction efficiency of lithium could be achieved at 99 % at least. Following three-stage scrubbing and two-stage countercurrent stripping experiments, the stabilized stripping efficiency of lithium was 99.24 %. The concentration of Li + in the stripping solution was enriched up to 16.404 g/L, while the total concentration of impurity ions was only 0.424 g/L. The resulting lithium-enriched solution could be utilized to prepare high-purity lithium chloride. This process has achieved a highly selective and efficient extraction of lithium, thereby enhancing the overall lithium extraction efficiency. The Density Functional Theory results indicate that the loaded organic phase selectively extracted lithium through ion exchange.

Abstract:Driven by technology advancement and wide application of lithium, the market demand for lithium is skyrocketing. To enable the sustainable supply of lithium, it is strongly desirable to extract lithium from various resources, especially salt lake brine with 60 % of global lithium content. Recently, adsorption has served as a critical procedure for selective lithium extraction from brines, in particular those with high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios. Herein, a comprehensive review of lithium adsorbents from nano structural and compositional effects to industrial applications is performed. Firstly, lithium adsorbents are fully summarized, involving the common types, structure-performance relationships, lithium intercalation and deintercalation mechanisms at the ionic level, and current limitations of various adsorbents. Based on these summaries, a performance heatmap is created to visualize the performance of lithium adsorbents. To serve the industrial demands, the shaping techniques and factors influencing extraction properties are then discussed. Further, the industrial cases of different lithium adsorbents and universal strategies of lithium extraction from brines to Li 2 CO 3 products using adsorbents are demonstrated, providing technical references for industrial applications. Finally, recommendations and perspectives on larger-scale development of lithium adsorbents are proposed. Overall, this review not only offers in-depth insight into lithium extraction from brines with high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios, but also inspires the development and design of next-generation lithium adsorbents with unprecedented properties.

Abstract:Owing to the important role of and increasing demand for lithium resources, lithium extraction is crucial. The use of molecular extractants is a promising strategy for selective lithium recovery, in which the interaction between lithium and the designed extractant can be manipulated at the molecular level. Herein, we demonstrate that anion receptors of tripodal hexaureas can selectively extract Li2SO4 solids into water containing DMSO (0.8% water) compared to other alkali metal sulfates. The hexaurea receptor with terminal hexyl chains displays the best Li+ extraction selectivity at 2-fold over Na+ and 12.5-fold over K+. The driving force underpinning selective lithium extraction is due to the combined interactions of Li+-SO42− electrostatics and the ion–dipole interaction of the lithium–receptor (carbonyl groups and N atoms); the latter was found to be cation size dependent, as supported by computational calculations. This work indicates that anion binding receptors could drive selective cation extraction, thus providing new insights into the design of receptors for ion recognition and separation.
